Personally, after your review I'm going too purchase one. I don't mind adding the Timney, I already have scopes available. What appeals to me is the really lite starting weight,the accuracy,and most of all if I have to climb a tree or fall out of a tree with the rifle I won't feel like I dropped my Harley. That's a great walking stalking gun.I have plenty of heavy bench guns.👏👏👏
I have the true timber strata version in 6.5 PRC and was hitting .33 groups at best in the stock configuration. I put mine in an Oryx chassis and now .25 groups. Not bad for a super budget rifle.
With skinny barrels you are not going to shoot stellar groups without letting the barrel cool. Mirage will come fast, and a hot barrel may even react differently between shots. If you want to see how really well a skinny barrel rifle will shoot one should let it cool off between every shot. It could take some time. But if hunting your barrel is going to be cool for that kill shot. These skinny barrel rifles are made to be light weight hunters not range rifles. If you want something for the range, get a heavy barrel.
I now have 4 Mossbergs. The 590A1 1 ga, the Patriot in .308 W, the MVP LR 308 Thunder Ranch, and now, the Patriot Predator in 7 mm PRC. For me, the Patriot did better when I put it in an MDT chassis, the LSS gen 2. I have a TC Compass II .308 that I put in an Oryx. So, when I got the 7 PRC, I did not shoot it in the factory synthetic stock (camo stock with the cerakote rifle.) I put it in an Oryx chassis. The Patriot .308 in the MDT chassis gets about 1 MOA. That is what I am expecting of the 7 PRC, overall, though I have a two shot group that measures .41 inches, which is .39 MOA. For a hunting rifle, that is a dead ungulate. So, yeah, I spent a little more to get the cerakote and then I spent more getting the chassis. But in the end, shoot what you want, make it fit you.
Being a gun guy for a long time and taking up archery has taught me that, in terms of accuracy and drop, there is little to complain about when using a rifle, even a mediocre one. A 3” group at 20yds is considered acceptable accuracy with a bow, and at 60yds the arrow drops probably 2-3 feet
I just bought my regular patriot in .243 Win. Excited to take it out! Are there any upgrades for this? Also, can the barrel be upgraded to the Predator so it can recieve a brake?
The rifle is not worth putting a threaded barrel on it. Better to sell it and get one threaded. A gunsmith will take you to the cleaners to do it right. You can thread it yourself if you invest in dies and a tool that aligns it with the bore, but then again that costs more money than it is worth. And the job may go bad and make your rifle worth less in value. You would be better to trade up if you can. But you should not need a brake with a .243 they are low recoil anyway. You do know that rifle is only a hunting rifle and not a rifle to shoot groups at the range, don't you? You won't be happy at the range with a hot barrel and groups falling apart.
@@garrytalley8009 well I was able to thread it myself perfectly fine and straight for about $25 for the dye and wrench. The 5/8 barrel happens to be the same as the dye itself so just align, oil and go at it. Been shooting it like that no problem
Ruger costs more weighs more and is a better rifle. The Mossberg Patriot is a lightweight rifle that costs less. The Mossberg is really made for hunting only. The Ruger has a heavier barrel and is suitable to shoot other than just hunting like target shooting and such. Same can be said for the Savage Axis as the Ruger. More apt to find a threaded barrel on a Ruger but one needs to check before they buy because they don't always have threaded barrels unless they are Predator models.
You are lucky, you've got a good sample. Mine( in .308Win) was a disaster, 3 different guys tried it with a different set of ammos -- the best we've achieved was ~ 3MOA. I've sold it and bought Ruger American Ranch 7.62×39 16'' on sale for $730 CAD. God, this is like Heaven and Hell. The quality of Ruger rifle is 5-10 times better, the precision is sub-MOA. It can even shoot cheap chinease surplus ammo w/o any issues( but obviously less precise). My range collegue has the same RAR 7.62x39 rifle for 2+ years, it's his main rifle, and the quality remains the same as my brand new sample. Nothing became loose like in your sample, the barrel is still in perfect shape. And even in 2 years, his rifle remains sub-MOA. And you don't need to replace anything, all parts work like a charm out of the box! Can't see any reason to spend ~ $80-100 CAD less for this Mossberg junk. 🤮 P.S. Don't take me wrong, I have Mossberg 590 Shotgun, and this is my favourite shotgun. It's like Kalashnikov in shotgun's world. 😍
Agreed and that's the challenge with making reviews for budget rifles. I could get the best sample off the line just like I could get the worst. I comes down to an average and generally what people are saying about it. Thanks for commenting I always appreciate hearing what others think
You expect too much out of a skinny barrel rifle. Barrel heats up quickly and if it isn't allowed to cool enough bullets will fly all over the place. A short thicker barrel will not be as affected. But honestly you really don't have much knowledge of rifles going from a .308 Win. to a 7.62x39.
All modern rifles are capable of more accuracy than the average shooter can achieve. When it comes to bolt action rifles for hunting use, it’s hard to make a poor choice today, unless you’re a brand snob. An adjustable trigger is a must for me, but otherwise, brand or grade doesn’t mean much.
Your comment makes more sense than most. I feel the same way on triggers as well. Not all that fussy on a little creep but the less the better. I did mess up on one of my hunting rifles and had the trigger pull a touch too light. Had to adjust it a bit more up.
My patriot in 6.5prc could not hit 3 inches at 100 yards. Junked the stock,installed a Boyds Spike camp and now at around 1". Will not eject shells,they just fall off the bolt,not happy with it at all. Going to sell and buy a Howa barreled action.
Most likely something simple on your ejection problem. I think that you have hit the milestone you get what you pay for most of the time. I just bought one of these Patriots in a 7mm PRC just to hunt with. Not going to do anything but hunt with it as it comes and use factory ammo even though I reload. Because these skinny barrel rifles are only made to be light weight hunting rifles not bench or range rifles. You will do good to buy a HOWA they are reliable and come with threaded barrels at least some of them and they don't have a skinny barrel. They can make OK bench or range rifles.
Not so. I bought 1 and it shot 1/2 moa. Bought another one for my son…. 1/2 moa. Even better w reloads. I think the 7prc’s ( which mine are both chambered in) are inherently accurate but it is a Mosberg patriot. So that’s 3 unicorns. 😮

I never really shoot more than 5 shots in 15 minutes so the barrel doesn’t bother me that much. If it can shoot sub I’ll be happy but if it doesn’t I won’t be mad 🤷♂️ for $500 I can let somebody use it without worrying about it getting scratched
@@bobmcmillen4502 I’m sure the quality control isn’t equal to other sub $1000 rifles but from multiple people shooting sub MOA with precision hunter 175s it seems worth the try. I’m going to try and pick one up shortly and I’ll take it to the long range here locally to see what it can do. I’m not expecting 1000 yard accuracy but it would be nice to have some decent range to take into the mountains.
@@Singlebarrel2323 A couple things. I’m shootings 175 gr Nosler ABLR’s which aren’t suppose to be as accurate. I’m ringing steele at 1000 yards with this Mosberg and those bullets. I do believe that the bergers and Elds will hold a better group at 1000 yards. But I am taking this gun out to a 1000 with those bullets.
This rifle is good for being a cheap affordable hunting only rifle. It isn't worth the expense of upgrades. They won't do anything to increase value and little for accuracy. This is hard facts. I am purchasing one of these rifles in 7mm PRC for hunting only in the Strada package. So, this isn't a hatchet job I think the rifle is good to go for hunting only. However, if one wants to upgrade to make it more your rifle and better to your liking great. I put Boyds stocks on many of my rifles just for that. They don't shoot any better I just like them better and make them look better. Having said that stocks need to be free floated whether they are the original stock or other.
As expected you achieved 1/2 moa once. It’s really a 1.2moa rifle and looking at that fit and finish there’s much better quality and value available out there.
Nothing at all against Mossberg, they make some excellent guns. As for the warranty, though, a number of their competitors have lifetime warranties on their guns. Ruger comes to mind as a direct competitor. They make the American line of bolt action rifles. Ruger actually has no warranty, but… they basically stand by their products for ever. So, bottom line is lifetime protection. One year seems chintzy, Mossberg.
The price you pay actually covers warranties. The cheaper the price the less warranty you will get. BTW I did buy a Mossberg Predator Strada in 7mm PRC and paid a little extra to Bud's Gun Shop that sells lifetime warranties for any of the guns they sell. It's not all that much more for peace of mind. When you purchase a rifle with a lifetime warranty often it is only for the original owner. Most companies will take care of a problem at no charge if indeed they had a faulty product. Only the big bucks' guns actually carry a lifetime warranty with no expiration. But they have a large profit margin and very few returns.
I have a mossberg patriot in 7mm'08 with certakote. It's the worst rifle I've ever owned. The POI wanders based on the type of ammo used by FEET at 200m. No, I'm not kidding. I can fire a 130grain SST with X grains of powder behind it and it will give tiny groups in a certain POI. Same load but with X-2 grains, and the POI is off by 26"!!!! Still a good group, but still, that's completely ridiculous! How could someone trust this as a hunting rifle? What if you lose or run out of your loads and need to use some generic ones? You won't have any idea at all if you'll be on target or two feet away. Forget it. Mossberg makes great shotguns!
What you stated can be said for many rifles. And you know that you can trust it with what you have proven it shoots. So, if you can't control the ammo, you can't control its accuracy. So what? You can trust it with proven ammo, right? So, you don't take it out with unproven rounds, right? I reload and have rifles that do the same thing at higher price points. I don't just trash the rifle I know it's limitations. I have many rifles some are more acceptable to factory loads but it makes no difference because in the scenario you came up with you would still need to buy the factory load it shot well and what is the possibility of that with ammo shortages and availability of brands to purchase for you to buy what shot well in it? Any good hunter manages to have ammo that shoots accurately out of their rifle when it comes time to hunt.

I have been on a hunt and lost my ammo on the ground after filling one tag and field dressing in, basically, the dark. Thankfully for the rest of the hunt, I was able to just run go the local corner store and get more rounds. With the patriot that's absolutely out of the question. Great shotgun though!
I had 6mm arc stag complete upper that would keyhole bullets sideways at 100 yds if shot without the supplied muzzle brake ,never seen anything like it or since
Really can't understand why mossberg would put such a fragile plastic stock on these patriot rifles, why would a company sabotage themselves that way, they have a satisfactory and very accurate barreled action, but any caliber above .243 win maybe a 6.5 Creedmoor has too much recoil for such a fragile bedded stock and will crack receiver bedding part of the stock and destroy all the accuracy of this rifle, all rifle manufacturers are making a fortune with plastic stocks over old standby wooden stocks anyway,they could at least make them solid plastic instead of a skeleton plastic shell of a stock it would still be a minimal expense and all the manufacturers do it and it only hurts their reputation and ultimately their sales because gun owners know cheap when they see it and an unsatisfied gun customers talk and are the manufacturers worst enemy

@@ZombiesIII I actually ended up trading the muzzle myself. It just happens that the barrel is 5/8" and the die fits right on.

My 308 patriot nightrain very accurate, does not have the fluted barrel. Consistant groups. Just bout another in 350 legend we will see

These rifles are very inconsistent. Seen some shoot 0.5 MOA. seen some shoot 6 MOA... Yes u read that right. 6 MOA
It is most likely stock related, would not use a fragile factory bedded mossberg stock on anything more than 243 win. caliber recoil
