Ho. What song sounds at 3:57?
Greatest singer ever !!!!!!!!!!!!
People don't know to read, it says What makes Aretha Franklin great? Not Why,why should, or why shouldn't. This is about learning from her not criticizing her. This is exactly why Beth is talking about her.
Aretha played piano as well as she sang. She was that talented. There won't be another.
Aretha didn't begin to lose any of her vocal heft until the early to mid 1980s, and even then she bested 93% of all contemporaries.
That clip of Otis is from the Monterey Pop Festival in ‘67. I was standing right below him!!!
Beth-I love how you break things down with so much heart! Check out Celine Dion’s tribute to Aretha on A Change Is Gonna Come- it’s very respectful to Aretha’s style.
Thank you for mentioning her Amazing Grace album!! I've only really heard one other album of hers before. This live album tho... WOW. I'm half way through it and I'm still very hooked!!! She has that kind of power that can definitely make anyone stop and listen
No problem!! It's so good!
I really don´t get why these type of videos don´t get more views, they´re fantastic.
Thank you!
Aretha ICONIC Franklin
One of best singer ❤❤
Something else she does, common with many of the best singers is the way she can slide in and out of notes to add a dynamic to them without making it sound like she is hunting for it.
What Makes Aretha Franklin The Greatest*
R I G H T!!!!!! THE 🐐
she is not the greatest
I really appreciate the changes you've made to this channel in the past year. Yours is now the best on youtube.
A masterclass! Wonderful video. All hail the queen!
Beth, thank you for a very interesting and informative video. I’ve been an Aretha fan since the sixties. Just one point I need to make, Mahalia was a big influence and regular visitor to the Franklin home but it was Clara Ward who actually helped bring Aretha up and taught her how to deliver a gospel rendition. Thanks again for posting.
Brilliant work, Beth! You clearly did your homework and took a very complicated vocal artist and simplified her complexities. Thank you!
I am musically ignorant. Your explanation here is wonderful and clear to someone like me. Thanks for sharing the "why" of Aretha Franklin's talent.
You're very welcome!
Jerry Wexler had early noticed the talent of Aretha and couldn't wait for her contract with Columbia Records to expire. He concidered her like a Diamond in the rough a talent too big to waste on only doing Blues/Gospel/Jazz standards. He convinced the bosses of Atlantic to sign her. Jerry was kinda fed up with the way they were recording in New York and brought Aretha and her husband at that time down to FAME studios in Muscle Shoes, Alabama. However when there the sessions didn't really like took off. All they had to work with was a shitty demo made in New York. Aretha had no ideas just like Jerry and the band and he found himself thinking "are things gonna get screwed up before they even got started?!" Then all of a sudden Jerry heard the keyboard player Spooner Oldham just playing something randomly and asked him to play it again! What he played is what we know as the intro to Never Loved a Man (The Way That i Loved You). which became her breakthrough hit! As in many cases the magic happens right there in the moment. Who knows what may have happen if Jerry hadn't heard what Spooner played and immediately know that was the missing piece of the puzzle. Everything she did between 1967-80 is magical when her voice and career was at their prime.
My granny I love Aretha Franklin!!!! I listened to her in the music history to the song “Respect”
She's the greatest, she has no rivals.
Thank you for highlighting the great Aretha Franklin. Love your channel. ❤
You are so welcome! Thank you for watching!
great video!! Aretha Franklin is my favorite singer. Thanks.
What a beautiful presentation, your delivery shows the joy and commitment you truly have for musicianship and music development as a whole. Thank you kindly...
Excellent analysis. Thank you for putting these profound musical concepts in lay terms. Your tribute helps me appreciate Aretha's music more.
I've been looking forward to this
Please do “What Makes Morten Harket Great”. He has the voice of an angel with unbelievable control and stamina.
Could you do a "What makes Stevie Wonder great"?
That would definitely be a good one!
That was a well done piece Beth. Thank you so much for the enlightenment that was badly needed especially by me. Looking forward to seeing more future singers perfect their craft for our enjoyment.
Thank you again. Atetha is able to change the way we feel the world. I would love to hear your opinion about Sixto Rodriguez and his incredible story.
Once again I think: glad I've discovered your channel, Beth.
This is very interesting; thank you. Aretha has been my favorite singer since late 1967. I have all of her albums and I have played them extensively. It's too bad that she did not see the harm that smoking would do to her voice, although I've read that Ahmet Ertegun at Atlantic Records gently suggested to her that she was smoking too much. I was very happy when she had her 1980s come-back with Freeway of Love, even though it was apparent that there was some raggedness to her tone. I can't imagine what popular music, culture, or life in general, would be without her unmistakable sound, and her influence on generations of singers who came after her. We are so fortunate to have had her during our lifetime. Thank you, once again for such a thorough tribute and explanation.
Wonderful, Beth!
Loving this series I hope more will be made
thank you so much for this!💙💙💙
wonderful analysis and info!
You're so welcome!
Beth, thanks again. Very interesting even though I don't understand the technicality of music, I interpret it my own you.
Beth, you can read a phone book. I simply like you. You get my like any time 💯%)))
A top 10 today! 👍
This was such an incredible video! So happy I found you. You have a new subscriber!
Yay! Thank you!
Art Tatum and her mom also taught her piano techniques so she drew from a few sources to create a distinct style of playing
Super video thank you a lot!
Love your videos. I wondered if you could review Jamie Cullum! Such an amazing musician and singer. Any song you like there are so many. I love his rendition of It ain’t necessarily so. Fabulous
Very well done!
Love It!!!
A ETERNA VOZ DO LINDO CANTO !
Thank you. I am a great admirer of Aretha's art. And I could listen to you talking for hours. I think you could even read the telephone directory... ;-)
Thank you so much, Jürgen. Aretha is a legend and I’m glad you appreciate her art. I’m also happy you enjoy listening to me. If you like my speaking voice, you might like my singing :)
I made a cover of Wicked Game by Chris Isaak, which is a song I love. You can listen to it here: open.spotify.com/track/6qfvKbg6ukHJOGykx2MARB?si=85291411d7e04bc7. I hope you like it and let me know what you think!
@@BethRoars Thank you Beth. This song is sung perfectly by you but it makes me too sad to listen to the entire song. Sorry. I am amateuring myself: ruclips.net/video/z7EGhNmi9jI/видео.html It's not even able to make one think about competing to your perfect voice.
ArethaFranklin was an inspiration to me singing All Genre of music...The Queen,The Best....!!!
Thanks Beth. Hello everyone.
Awesome!
Can you do one on Prince, Chris Cornell or Freddy Mercury next ?
I like this more complete style if video. Love the channel. Love a smart Irish redhead too but that only 20% of my Like button.
Grew up listening to her, Carole King and Helen Reddy. They all sung well and did something for women. Aretha and her girls were great in Blues Bros. 2002 with R-E-S--P--E-C-T . Aretha showed us how a woman can sing ( even though Linda Ronstadt is my all time favourite) . She sand for women and Black People and did it well. ( Terry from Oz).
Amazing video u should do one of whitney houston and one of mariah carey aswell.
I would love to see her react to Brasilian artist Ana Carolina, Seu Jorge - É isso aí
Beth roars, u have one of the most beauiful faces.....
YESSS
What makes AF great? EVERYTHING
Would love to hear your analysis of Roberta's Flack's style.
I want to say also that in the latter end of the video, when you mention just how much the apparent size and color of a voice can be adjusted, music to my ears. It’s a lot of what is being discussed in the modern school of voice feminization by people like Zheanna Erose and Zoey Alexandria and Undead Voice Lab. The voice is malleable.
Very Nice skills you have Beth! Enjoyed you'r video so thnx for that💜
Beth hermosa 😘 😍 😍 😍
Independent thinking. Even when she was young she was in charge.
Would love to hear your take on David Bowie.
Should be a short video. It's Aretha F'ing Franklin!!!! That's it. What more needs to be said?? :-) R-E-S-P-E-C-T!!! Sock it to me Beth. Can't wait to hear this.
How about a reaction to Dean Friedman. virtually forgotten on youtube he has some great songs. company, shopping bag ladies, lydia etc.
Can you please do Tom Jones next?
I really liked your reaction, I have loved it since I heard it 45 years ago. I have seen your reactions to Mercedes Sosa and Abel Pintos, I would like if you could react to "Your voice" by Abel Pintos, it is like 2 songs in one with different rhythms and tunes. Thanks for your time.
😎✌🏻
Please react to Steve Vai- in my dreams with you, they won't regret it's a sexy masterpiece and voiced by Devin Townsend
It's silly this only has 5k views...
Hey Beth could you react to Civil War guns n roses paris live 1992 or you could be mine guns n roses paris live 1992. Axls voice is absolutely insane
Hi Beth, I hope you are doing well. Can you react to Don't Stop Believin on the RUclips channel Panam Sports? It is sung by the best Steve Perry impersonator in the world, please 🙏🙏
Will you be highlighting Mariah?
@bethroars hi. What song sounds at 3:55?
⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐🖐️😊
I would have added that she pronounces the “P” as more of a B, as you should do when singing.
Do what's makes michael jackson great??
Please react and do an analysis to Lorna Shore - To the Hellfire
Can you do ( Celine dion ) ?? She’s not close, but in my opinion she’s the same level of Aretha.
Hate you feel like this, but its your opinion. Aretha has no female rivals in my book.
@@kennethwilliams3182 Subjective
@@CarloRodriguez10 even celine probably would agree also.
@Kenneth Williams Nah, believe me it’s just you
@Carlo Rodriguez celine ain't even better than whitney clown. Be gone fool.
What makes her great ? Being Aretha Franklin of course !
You are wrong about her range, she’s mixed belted a d6 in 1972
That screeching and wailing she does goes through my head like a nail. It's like fingers going down a blackboard. People are very gullible and someone said she was good so they went right along with it. It's a small percentage of people who can actually think for themselves.
Anything on Ariana Grande?
Aretha was frankly ridiculous, just open and so easy. As a young man it was voices like this and the blues voices which started me smoking, not realising that whilst I have a canny bit of soul, this English white boy isn't ever gonna sound like Howlin' Wolf :D
come on
Well she was exposed very early to grown up shit that's why she developed quickly esp her voice.
Alcohol and smoking didn`t infect the voice of Lemmy! 😉
Hell no!! He infected alcohol and drugs. He just used them to clean his body.
@@whiteeulogianraven7995
👍 also...a good one!
What makes Eivør great ?
You know, I do appreciate all the research (and listening) that went in to your well rehearsed (probably read off a script you did write) commentary. But with my long life of listening and loving Aretha and her music I gotta say You don't have the maturity. to even talk about her for over 20 minutes.
Not sure if you meant to be rude but...
@@brucedillinger9448 I did not intend to be rude . It was just my point of view. If it offended you sorry.
Age doesn't matter old head
@@lydob2471 Thanks for the comment
Been listening to pop/rock etc since mid 60's. I think one of the Queen's better songs is in the movie Blues Brothers, surrounded in a cast of monumental musicians she kills it!
take me for a foul but i never knowed she was dead and to be honest that might come from the fact i'm far from the USA but that can too be because for me a person die when the memory we have of that person die and big mama can't die for me because of that! YES i'm a male, YES i'm white but none of that is of any importance when someone is " highter" than color or sex! big mama is ETERNAL because her songs are ETERNAL!
Robert plant
Yeah ! Thats what i wont !
Hmmmm...
The explanation of the vocal alterations isn't true. Aretha's voice gradually changed, because of hormonal reasons...PERIOD.
Not much.
I love Aretha Franklin, EVERY ONE loves Aretha, but I think Dusty Springfield takes the title for me
Hilarious.
I always found her quite boring and screaming
Tina Turner more soulful
The queen of soul but she’s no Nina ❤️
Vocally she better than nina but musically nina is the best.
@@lydob2471 agreed!
Too much talking.
First dislike, i win
She's overrated and she was exaggerated
Aretha Franklin overrated? Honey never
@@takemyhand1988 well that's your opinion. But she's overrated and that's that
@@iniakalitoni3405 she influenced Freddie Mercury, Michael Jackson, mariah carey, Celiné dion. What do you mean overrated? Can't she sing?
@@takemyhand1988 I'm yawning
@@iniakalitoni3405 give me one reason she's overrated
Aretha was more than 3 octaves at her peek. Go listen to her sing "Sit down and cry." Also "Good to me as i am to you."
