The first Lady of Soul...I'm in tears..She was and always will be a beautiful woman
Oh wow! Jerry Orbach! This is a great find.
My Retha!
Miss u
Your Nessun Dorma lives on! ❤️🌹
Aretha's speaking voice is so soft and sweet and her singing voice has such power and strength, I think her using her real voice is what threw them off! AMAZING!
RIP ARETHA We miss you ♥️♥️♥️♥️♥️
Jerry Orbach?! I didn’t see any of his work except for Law and Order, and he was terrific. It’s nice to see him in his younger days.
The amazing Aretha Franklin....God rest her soul...
Beautiful beautiful Aretha... you can see her pain and determination! Im so happy she made it so far in life! ❤❤❤🙏🙏🙏
I get the impression that she was so famous at the time that the panel didn’t think a singer of her stature would be there so none of them thought to name her.
Was she a superstar during this era?
Absolutely, she was always a superstar
R&B music was the last genre they were thinking
@@bmwjourdandunngoddess6024Had a hit in December 1973 with ‘Til you come Back to me’ written by Stevie Wonder.
@@brookehanley3659Beautiful performance of that song❤
She was by far the biggest singer of the day, universally acclaimed, and she made no attempt to disguise her voice! They were obviously not attuned to Soul and R&B music.
Just about to write that and agree with Diggs comment, nobody assumed star of that stature would be on that show!
Arlene would have been 67 here, and probably didn't spend much time listening to "current" music, but one of the other three should have guessed, other than, as others here have suggested, maybe they didn't expect someone of Aretha's stature to appear on WML
@@mthivier Excellent comment.
@AJB3 Aretha was on many talk shows and other TV programs in the late 1960's and early 1970's (the height of her carrer) where she was interviewed and also spoke with the hosts of TV shows. In addition, the panelists are in the entertainment business. It's mindboggling they didn't recognize her voice
Remember this was a time before social media. Unless a singer was on TV or radio in interviews, there's no reason why people would know what they sounded like in conversation.
R.I.P. Queen of soul.
I just found this, I did not know WML continued after the original cast. Aretha, a shining star, wasn't she amazing? Thank you for posting this episode 🌺
Yes, the show in its original incarnation left the air in 1967, but a five-night per week syndicated version began airing in 1968, and would run until1975. As this was listed as September 1974, it must have been the final season.
Me too!
Aretha didn't disguise her voice.
Facebook sent me here. R.I.P The Queen. They should bring this show back. That's the guy from Law & Order.
I’m amazed that Arlene did not guess her.
Soupy kissed and followed her off stage.
I also play the piano by ear, I composed a song. Amazing, that Ms Franklin plays by ear.
I guess that's why they save the best for last, huh 🤔 xo RIP Queen of Soul
Jerry Orbach?!? OMG!
Okay... WHEN WILL WE GET A REBOOT OF THIS SHOW?!?!
Not a patch on John Daleys WML
It is so good to see Arlene Francis on the show. As far as I know, she was the first female panel member back in the 50's. She was on when the rest of the panel were pompous doctors and mayors.
I would’ve recognized her voice in the first 3 seconds
Arlene became less fancy and more everyday look
Aretha reminds me of the twins, that sang, modeled and did Karate
Looks like a different America. How things have changed! 😔
I cannot believe all the time spent on her weight. Damn.
I thought that to be quite rude!😡
17:48 "Is it just native to you?" Back-handed compliments always make me chuckle. There is this notion that a black person opens his/her mouth, and wonderful singing automatically comes out... a white person, not so delightful.
I bet if he would've let her sing just a taste of someone else's song, they would've caught on instantly
Why would they say Aretha Franklin isn't brunette? What color is that then?
Aretha Franklin was a redhead. And yes, it was natural.
I have never seen Aretha Franklin answer so many questions, her speaking voice was sultry in this video. She usually popped right off the stage. She turned into a huge diva. Perhaps that was her reaction to the baloney she dealt within the industry and among the general population. IDK
I hate this set - looks like a circus.
It’s very 70s that’s all I have to say
Jared Linden ...You probably weren't born then.
@@lukeswall5999 It's also a show that's more famous for being in black and white than its colorized reboot.
Yep and it contributed to its continued demise
@@HelloooThere Not one thing contributed to a television show demise.. Somethings just run its course and the rating drop.. It happen to ALL TV shows
I liked Jerry in Law And Order. He and Benjamin Pratt was my favorite detective combination. So young looking here.
Course by course one by one 😂❤
Man was she skinny
