Not 2 officers oh lawd 😭 Nothing could stop Aretha from success and touching the hearts of men. She was truly gifted from the ancestors and divinely called to do God’s work!!!!
Woo WEE! Aretha was such a consummate professional, it takes these deepcut accounts to shed some light on these things. Really humanizing and relatable.
Being a diehard fan of hers I knew about all of this. This is yet another reason that I connect with her so much. She did not give up. She rose up and pushed forward. And if I am not mistaken after the driving incident she stopped driving all together. The movie and series only touched the surface of her life. We will never really know all that she had to endure and overcome, but what we do know shows that she was meant to happen!
I think a lot of people nowadays don't know to what extend Aretha was involved in the civil rights movement. And I mean INVOLVED in the most practical, hands-on way imaginable.
Yes. I learned that iconic legend like Ms. Aretha is very tenacious!! And that life can be very difficult but through change and that no matter what there is a brighter light for you at the tunnel!! U just have to believe❤❤❤
Born in Detroit in 1953, many of the vocalists you feature are well known to me. Although I never met them personally, anytime a Detroit born or reared vocalist gained fame, my city pride swelled. From imitating Diana Ross with my hairbrush/microphone to spelling out R E S P E C T Aretha style, my sister and best childhood girlfriends would rotate parts as lead singers and back-up singers. Your channel popped up in my RUclips recommendations yesterday and I have been voraciously devouring them, feeling as though I am attending a graduate course level education about music and seeing the all to frailties of famous Black woman who looked so glamorous and successful. I never received any formal music lessons but until you pointed out how Ronald Reagan began to remove musical literacy from our lives i never thought about how how much music was a part of my life. My mother sang lullabies. My girlfriends sang hand clap rhymes. I sang in school and church choirs. My mother listened to recordings of Broadway musicals on the record player. My dad favored male vocalists and jazz. As kids were sang 3 part harmonies such as “Row, row, row your boat,” “Three Blind Mice,” and our badly pronounced french sung in “Fere Jacques.” Those exposures have vanished from our lives, sadly. Thank you for explaining so much to me about the music world off-stage.
I've heard from Detroit folklore that Ted White broke Aretha's arm. For the purpose of good PR it was first said that the blinding lights were the cause of her falling from the stage. Years later when her alcoholism became known publicly it stood to reason that this account made sense!!! However it was said that Aretha when drinking unlike Tina would go toe-to-toe with her abuser. It was said that a drunk Aretha was a hell cat (hence slapping the police!!0. Ted didn't slap Aretha and she would go weep in a corner no!!! So I can see as how she might have suffered a broken arm in their violent tussles. Aretha had many secrets that she kept from the media including for years. that she mothered a child.at 12. Her peers adored her and to the outsider it seemed as if Aretha was a super mean woman!!! Remember the Gladys/Aretha fallout. In the book Aretha concocted some story about a flight and an unappreciative Gladys. The truth I've heard is that in the early 70s Gladys made the impardonable mistake of expressing her concern about Aretha's drunken stupors to a media outlet. Aretha holds a grudge for years and she did not speak to Gladys for YEARS. And Aretha generally does.t talk her private life with the media so in order to keep the fact that she was alcoholic she couldn't truthfullly disclose her real beef "with big mouth Gladys" Make sense now???
Oh you must not know how tina really got down. Dont let that hollywood movie fool you. Do your research on that sista was known for getting physical with everybody ike included. She was not how the movie protrayed.
@@lolo17thRUclips has certainly removed the glitter from many of the manufactured storylines that were created to obscure the actual lives of famous stars that we felt like we knew. I remember my mother and my Aunt Ruth arguing about the chronological order of Elizabeth Taylor´s husbands, or about the Betty Davis/Joan Crawford feud.
As for the Aretha/Carolyn/Sparkle fiasco, there is probably some mistruths in the book. If you watch Sparkle with Irene and McGee the soundtrack is excellent!!! Per interviews with both actresses Curtis decided not to release the actresses version due to his wanting a BIG NAME ARTIST on the soundtrack. Aretha notoriously private turned him down. Ross I think thought the songs "too Black" and Gladys may have been approached. Not sure as to why this didn't pan out. But undeterred Mayfield fought to get in Aretha's inner cycle and may have mistakenly (or purposely!!!) led Carolyn to THINK that he would use her as anything other than a back-up on his precious Sparkle songs. Carolyn though an excellent songwriter and lyricist WAS NOT the BIG NAME ARTIST Mayfield wanted for Sparkle!!!!! Now did Mayfield USE Carolyn to get to Aretha? Maybe!!!! Should Aretha have reprimanded Mayfield for his misleading her baby sister? Probably!!! But this most likely realistic scenario doesn't sell books or movie tickets!!!
Plus, she was arrested in Rome at the airport, around 1970. There are photos of her being restrained by a female police officer, and Aretha looks absolutely furious.
@@kate74808 She was in Rome to do a concert. She found out she was only going to be paid half of her fee, so she did half of the concert, then walked off. She was arrested at the airport. She had to return later to do a make-up date. I'm guessing they got the financial troubles sorted out to her satisfaction.
@@sashineb.2114You know how you grow up hearing stuff? One rumor that I heard was that Aretha was very particular about getting her cash up front. She would delay a concert if the money wasn’t right. I attended my one and only Aretha concert at the Masonic Temple in Detroit. We had to wait more than an hour for her to appear. I thought that was so disrespectful to the audience that I never bought another ticket to her live performances. I still bought her records, though.
@@bernadettedevereaux8694 I've heard similar stories from friends who saw her a couple of times. They waited almost half an hour, and then the audience started clapping. Finally, the curtain was pulled and she came out. It's been reported that she really did want half of her concert fee in cash, paid up front before performing. Plus, she demanded no air conditioning, so the halls were usually warm. I saw her one time and when I came into the hall from the AC out in the lobby, it felt like I had gone to a tropical climate in the hall. I guess the AC played with her voice, so she had to have it off.
What did you think of the Genius depiction of Aretha vs the motion picture depiction? I know the Genius version wasn't approved by the family, but I learned alot from that biopic and Cynthia did her justice capturing her essence and speaking voice.
@Giselle I enjoyed the Genius series because it was a more honest portrayal of her young life and circumstances and her abusive marriage because all of that is usually glossed over. Cynthia is awesome btw. I want J Hud to do more than remakes and covers.
We got mad tea about her family dynamic too. From her father having a child with a twelve year old girl, which caused the Franklin family to relocate to Aretha taking over the Sparkle soundtrack that her sister was going to record. Lol it even touched on her feelings about Natalie Cole getting the spotlight as the new "Queen of Soul". It showed how much she smoked as well as how involved she was in the Civil Rights movement. So informative!!!
The Genius had more time to get into her life and music where as the movie did not have the much time. I only wished that they could have casted someone other than Erivo.

@@theprince_jay I've listened to her Columbia music a lot. To me, she sounds like she's heavily influenced by Dinah Washington on those recordings. I'll have to listen again through a Judy Garland lens.
Back in the early 60s Judy Garland was the most soulful sounding white woman on TV because she knew how to build a song and musically express emotions vocally. She didn't have all the Gospel Tools Aretha did. But, she had a beautiful mezzo contralto with a nice melismatic vibe. Why do you think every Black Diva has sang down Somewhere Over The Rainbow
It’s true...I don’t know if it was Europe but her manager said she was drunk and the fall shattered her elbow which is why she didn’t play a lot of piano on her second Atlantic album “Aretha Arrives “.
Sir Black I was actually quoting her manager at the time who represented Queen Booking founded by Dinah Washington and a lady named Ruth whose last name I cannot recall right now.

Wait Judy Garland was one of Aretha's faves? I never knew that. I know Judy was Sarah Vaughan's favorite singer, but not one of Aretha's.
"The Man that Got Away" in the movie "A Star A Born" is soul personified. "Paris Is A Lonely Town" is my personal favorite.
