The way contemporary music is produced is an additional factor that contributes to people overstraining their voice. Bad technique can be ‚fixed‘ in post production to some extend and so companies have reduced or entirely stopped spending money on training and coaching their talent to actually learn good technique in the first place. Also a lot of music is so heavily compressed and ‚loud‘ that it gives listeners and especially people interested in singing a completely wrong impression of how singing works. If you Listen to vocalists today, especially young aspiring singers or talent show candidates, you can actually hear how hard they push their voices and how much strain they put on their vocal cords because many of them never had any sort of professional vocal coaching and they also picked up a lot of really unhealthy and bad habits from listening to music on the radio or on Spotify. When I started taking professional lessons twenty years ago I had to unlearn a whole lot of very bad habits I picked up from listening to music on TV and radio. music that even at the time was already often overproduced and over compressed and sung by people who also didn’t really have great technique to begin with. Things have only gotten worse over the last twenty years and so aspiring vocalists today tend to pick up even worse habits than I did.
Something i've gathered from a lot of pub singers & amateur bands etc is that they fall for the illusion that louder = better when it's not always true, that's what the microphone is for, it's the sound engineer's job to get the mix right. I've seen loads of inexperienced singers that have no musical ear for how their band sounds as a whole so gradually through the night they start getting louder and louder until it just sounds awful. This goes for any musician standing on a stage. A good musician listens to the whole band, bad musicians only listen to themselves.
"i didn't get recovery days there that was not important for someone that was making so much capital for such a big corporation". As an industry, the music business has an extremely poor track record of ensuring the well-being of its people (just look at how many artist end up dead or wrecked for life). It is e.g. well documented that taking people out of their environment and hauling them on tour around the world is severely stressful for their physical, mental and social health. Then you add in shenigans like Michael Jackson accidentally getting half his head burned off and you have a profession that looks more like a death trap than something people make a living of. I mean, most industries have managed to establish effective safeguards against the specific dangers of that industry except the music (and film) industry where such consideration seem to either not exist or, at best, seem pretty ineffective. There is College Humor's 'Construction Workers React to "Wrecking Ball"' which is meant humourous but it seems to contain an awful amount of truth each time I hear stories like that from the music industry.
I always figured it was almost a brittney situation where her earlier work wanted her to sound much more poppy and a higher tone and not really dig into that gravely part of her voice, but i think shes always had it

shes always been a mezzo... you can tell even when she was singing higher songs and during her time as a disney star she was still so young and the songs she was singing were very youthful so even though she was always a mezzo, the music shes singing now (country rock) allows her to embrace her mezzo sound a bit more

Kudos to you for giving a clear and detailed explanation of Miley´s voice and concerns. I am 71 and never paid much attention to her, thought she was “too much” and wild. However, her song Flowers made me look at her in a different way and reading about her gave me a new understanding her career. She is devoted to her career and is now healthier than she has ever been. Consequently she is even looking prettier. As far as her voice, I Love It! Hopefully she is kind to herself and has learned to say HELL NO when being pushed around to make money from her voice.
I think she has matured since 2013... she isn't 21 year old party girl anymore, she's 31 year old divorced woman... and yes heartbreak from her divorce changed her and you can see it through those songs Flowers and Slide Away... she has stated in a couple songs that she isn't young or 17 anymore so she could be done with her "wild" era. When she was teen star in Hanna Montana she couldn't really do any of that wild stuff because she was underage back then and famous... so she musta had a late puberty in early 20s. I didn't really like her in the beginning but her last few ballads are really good. She definitely imitates Madonna like many other young popstars.
Love her current voice! Never was a honest fan of her music (hence popmusic), but I have to admit that her late covers and small gigs are a joy to listen to.

As someone who has some minor vocal damage from improperly learning to scream (I have since learned the right way) the idea of vocal surgery is terrifying.
Which is why channels like this really matter.

I always figured it was almost a brittney situation where her earlier work wanted her to sound much more poppy and a higher tone and not really dig into that gravely part of her voice, but i think shes always had it
Yes, she's always had a deep voice
7 things is an example
You should do an analysis on the changes in Tom Waits' voice. Talk about getting gravelly over time...he's the prime example.
How about Greg Lake?
@@RaymondBCrisp Greg Lake was a legend. 😭
@@michaellooks2723 Indeed he was...
Ryan Bingham is the same. My friend is an acquaintance of his and said early in his career he sounded muchhh different, but singing so many years in clubs, it's just grown gravelly and raspier. I personally love it. :)
I have an even better example, Nina Hagen
Did you just put tears in my eyes? Wow… those words at the end really did a number on me.
Comprehensive, informative and to the point, well done!
I love her voice more now. I think it has more character/attitude. It goes with her personality
Very informative professional and respectful explanation.
A cautionary note to all singers of all genres to take good care of themselves from the very beginning of their careers. Well done!
I came for an explanation and got lots of bonus information on all the things I need to stop doing to my voice if I want to keep my singing voice for a long time. Very insightful, thank you :)
What an awesome episode, Beth, especially the message at the end. I hope many young people will hear it and pay heed.
shes always been a mezzo... you can tell even when she was singing higher songs and during her time as a disney star she was still so young and the songs she was singing were very youthful so even though she was always a mezzo, the music shes singing now (country rock) allows her to embrace her mezzo sound a bit more
I like her singing voice more now. I was surprised by her talking voice though lol
Miley Cyrus singing rock with a gritty voice is all I need!!
This channel is not about music anymore... Now, is about passion being shared with those in love for music. I've been off for a year, I bloody regret it. Awesome Scottish Gray eyes girl... Congratulations is by far an unfair word.
Are those specifically Scottish? Mine are a weird pale blue that's more grey-green, not like anyone else in my family, and now I'm wondering what colour my maternal grandmother (a Ross who grew up speaking Gaelic in Cape Breton) had.
The only other person I ever met with the same was a Duncan (transported from Scotland for horse thieving!). I loved her very much but the real bonus was in the apocalypse we would never be short of rides!
My family is Scottish and my eyes and my mothers eyes shift depending on our moods. From bright blue to a grayish color! I thot we were just weird 😂
@@ConfessionsofaKookieAddict , I am also Scottish and I always wondered why my eyes get greener when i am depressed or upset and my yes have yellow/brown in the middle and green ring around the outside normally.
She's become a lot more interesting both as a singer and a person to me. she's probably always been an interesting person but we're getting to see the real Miley these days and she's always cool to listen to.
!!!!
Nicely done Beth...a professional presentation...you didn't miss a beat or a technicality
I really appreciate how you respected her and explained thoroughly the science behind it. Amazing video.
that conclusion, though!!
the world need you as you are. there's already a "like them", in the person of "them". it needs YOU like YOU are! when it wants you to change, you will.
(that's a thing one of my coaches told me)
I admire Miley's honesty about this, however I really LOVE her new sound.
I compare her changes (both in both vocal quality and choice of material), to those that Marianne Faithful went through. And is both cases, _as a listener,_ I prefer the later version.
Oh, and--I think I've already said this, but it bears repeating: I love the expansion beyond just reactions, and especially the science-y direction you've chosen. Love the channel even more as time goes on.
Thank you Maya! I know it is a little different for some people so it isn't for everyone. However, I am enjoying making these videos!
I loved Marianne but that hoarseness and broken phrases just got to be too much as the years went by.
I love Miley’s new husky voice. Not sure about the hair though, it makes her look like Lulu.
And Lulu’s like that, sweetie!
I have been watching Ms. Roars for over a year now and i just absolutely love the channel. Ive learned so much by just watching. Im always excited to see a new video.
Thanks so much
She's got so much talent! I love the way her voice sounds ❤️
I love her voice soooo much. It's so unique. Beth, your videos are so entertaining and interesting. Thanks for making videos like this 🙏🏻
miley has a very unique and an amazingly stable voice and her techniques are absolutely chef's kiss
She’s been a heavy smoker and has the damaged voice to prove it. The damage smoking does to bones and skin will also show soon.
Smoking what???
It could, but seems like derm procedures and skincare can work really well in countering that damage since all of that has improved quite a lot even compared to 10 years ago.
@@LG141602 weed and cigarettes, and also drinking
i think its a good thing that such a famous singer speaks out about vocal health with confidence and self love! hopefully she can learn from mistakes and improve her health and professional life in the future :-)
I remember when she was playing hanna montana there was an episode that aired about her vocal cords and it was pretty serious and I think it was this very condition and I do remember her in the episode completely freaking out about it and sad.
14:44 thank you for the whole video and research - and this super important afterthought! Bless bless 🙏🏻🌸💖
Her voice is fucking incredible now. And although it much raspier, it still so powerful and controlled live.
Nicely done video, Beth. Wow, very thorough on the topic! Important info for singers.
I am glad to hear that Miley is taking care of her voice. She has a unique voice and I'm sure most people would agree that she has much to offer to her audience.
!!!!
This is my favorite video you’ve made yet.
Your conclusion was so beautiful! Congrats on the great content.
Glad you enjoyed it!
Great video! I am not personally attracted to Miley style of music but I liked her personality on dealing with the issue, but above all, your approach to the topic was sensitive, well based and extremely honest! Congratulations, Beth!
I’ve noticed her rasp has been emphasized since her vocal surgery and I absolutely love it. It has so much character and power. I love it more now. As if her voice couldn’t get even more beautifully unique!
I absolutely ADORE her voice now. Amazing. It can fit with everything!
With her voice as it is now, she should sing rocks songs mostly, she’d rock it
She does, have you heard her covers? So. Good. & her new album was at the top of the rock charts for weeks.
That was an excellent explanation of how Miley's voice ended up where it is. I was floored when I first heard how deep (and awesome) Mileys' voice became. Now I see there is much more to it.
She has an amazing voice period what ever year it was she sings with passion and her stage presence is phenomenal she a God gifted talent enough said !
I clicked because I was curious and I did learn a lot, but I also stayed here because the video turned so wholesome in the end, aww!
Honestly smoking I'm sure affected it
What a superb video Beth. Informative, educational and clear. Thank you
You are so welcome!
I would love for you to talk about vocal dystonia, Brian Littrel (from backstreet boys) have it...
that ending was beautiful, been watching videos on vocal style and health for years and this is the first time i've finished a video feeling CALM and not TERRIFIED hahahaa, thank you!!! xxx
i like her voice now alot more then before and she should sing rock imo. amazing video on how and why her voice went where it is now. i hope she can keep her voice where it is now.
You explained that so well!
Let's be honest, Miley's voice is definitely one of a kind 😍❤️
Wow! Beth Roars thank for this singer!
miley's voice makes my heart feel so comfy and cozy :) this is interesting
It's called puberty and maturity thank you I'll be here all week
Love her current voice! Never was a honest fan of her music (hence popmusic), but I have to admit that her late covers and small gigs are a joy to listen to.
Agreed
Same
Oh, hi, I'm new here. Wrote down a quote "You are already living". Loved. Stayed.
Miley did the best at the chris cornell tribute
ruclips.net/video/qVUu4DS2bb8/видео.html
Video of Miley doing Say Hello to Heaven at the Cornell Tribute show...I was backstage I've never seen so many Musicians and actors in the same place
And btw BR she can't hit the 5th octave G that is in the song..but she is in key and it's obvious she is trying so I give any vocalist a pass
The voice and human body are extremely resilient...and can always heal if you apply the right tools.
Every story has its scars and that's how I love her.
Totally agree 😁
Finally a person, Who explain everything and extremely good.
Thank you for this video. Now you have a New subscriber;D
As someone who has some minor vocal damage from improperly learning to scream (I have since learned the right way) the idea of vocal surgery is terrifying. I personally can't recommend it as so many people have problems afterwards or not even being able to sing anymore at all.
Personally I would always suggest learning to work around it unless surgery is necessary for health reasons. I'm happier with my voice now than I have ever been, damage and all
Wuou, that was awesome! I've been singing in a chorus for 8 years now, and I've never heard about this. Also, until now, I was confused about how the vocal chords work, and this was absolutely clarifying, thank you so much for this video!
Greetings from Argentina!
Awesome video! I love Miley's voice but I've never imagine there was an illness behind that.
Really fascinating! Thanks, girl!
*I really like the overall message about your voice being uniquely yours and treating it with care. Cheers 🥂
Could you do one on Selena Gomez? Her voice has changed very much from 2016-2017 to now, and I don’t believe she’s ever said she’s had a surgery. Great video!
What you said at the end is exactly what I wish was said to me as a young professional musician and singer. Truer words never spoken.
