  • If you want to learn how to trout fish using rooster tails, you just found the right video! In this video we break down a full in depth how to on how to fish rooster tails in creeks, rivers, and streams. Trout fishing rooster tails can be a ton of fun if you learn how to properly fish them. On the Yakima Bait website they say the most common method used in rivers is to cast your rooster tail out across and slightly upstream; allow it to sink near the bottom while reeling up any slack line, then pulling back on your rod tip slightly, causing the blade to start its spin before beginning a slow retrieve. The current will sweep your spinner downstream as you reel it back. Once your spinner swings in near shore, it’s time to reel in and cast again. This trout fishing video is going to break down all the other tips and techniques you need to know to fish rooster tail trout spinners.

Thanks Jord, been fishing for 50 years and never went to a 20 foot bumper. I always did 4 foot and tied on lure. Now I'll do 20' to a swivel and then 18" to lure. I really enjoy you guys videos. I've actually learned a couple things. Lead above swivel for lighter lures is a good one too. I get kinda mad at times, cause you guys give away all the secrets I've learned over the past 50 years. But it's all good and fun and yay, for new fishers.

Fish face up stream watching for food… they’ll seldom chase a lure up stream.. so you go behind them and cast past them and bring your bait right by where they are looking.. and if you hook up, but it tosses it.. move on. Once a trout tastes that hook steel, it won’t bite again.. not immediately anyhow.

you guys should come up to Ontario when the borders open back up, for the aurora trout. I believe its the rarest trout in the world. it was only in 2 lakes naturally, but with efforts from the MNR they're now in 12 lakes 9 of which are open to fish under a heavily regulated schedule of 3 lakes being open to fish per year from august to mid October. they're not monsters but what they lack in size they make up for in scarcity to the point of being worthy of being classed as a bucket list fish.

Who doesn't enjoy using rooster tails spinners for trout. I love them, especially after it just got done raining or an overcast. This type of weather I enjoy fishing for trout. it also depends on their feeding habits too, with a white and gray rooster tail I can catch up to at least 10 trout a day give or take. Sometimes the rooster tails work better than trout magnets.

I had the same issue. Practice with cheap lures. If I go to a new spot I try a cheap lure first to get a feel for the area . I used 1/16 oz rooster tails last week and I had way more success even in shallow water than with the 1/8 oz. Go even lighter and it won’t sink as fast (less casting distance though) so hopefully it won’t get snagged as fast. Once I got more comfortable I pulled out the more expensive Panther Martin’s. The rooster tails still caught a good amount of wild trout. I’ve finally gained respect for them.

3000 should feel fairly well balanced with 6'6" but I wouldn't go any bigger with the reel. I use a 25 with 6'6" light and it feels good. If you go to the store you can try a couple different size reels on your rod and see which feels best.

Why aren't you using a Quick Change No-Knot Fly Fishing Snaps Set for Flies, Jigs, Lures or at least cut the front part of a quality swivel. I fished with a guide for steelhead and on the hard baits we used part of a swivel. Please tell me there's a quicker way and you still catch fish? : )

good question...I've never used anything but a good knot, since I learned how many more fish I could catch in creeks and streams without swivels. When I make a change I am usually ready for a breather and don't mind the extra 15 seconds.
