Penny Hardaway v. Heat 1997 Playoffs Game 3

  • People who follow the NBA today forget how good Penny Hardaway was before all his injuries. For all of his great performances, this, to me, was the defining moment of his career.
Shaquille O'Neal had moved on to the Lakers, and the Magic had suffered through a tumultuous 45-37 season that included the firing of Brian Hill and several injuries to key players. Hardaway himself missed 23 games due to injury, and many felt he was responsible for the player mutiny against Hill. Waiting for the Magic were the powerful Miami Heat, coached by Pat Riley and anchored by Alonzo Mourning. The Heat had finished 61-21 and would go on to the Eastern Conference Finals after rallying to defeat the Knicks in the next round.
In the first two games of the series, the Heat dominated, obliterating the Magic in every facet of the game. The same thing was happening in Game 3, as the Heat took a 20-point lead in the second quarter. The Magic, who had been swept out of the playoffs in each of the last three years, probably had that same result on their minds.
But then, Hardaway took over, carrying his battered team to victory. Starting power forward Horace Grant was out for the series, starting center Rony Seikaly broke his foot in the second quarter, and starting swingmen Nick Anderson and Dennis Scott were severely limited throughout the game. At one point, the Magic were forced to use Danny Schayes at center, but it didn't matter. Hardaway put the team on his back, scoring 26 first-half points to lead a rally and inspiring others like Darrell Armstrong and Gerald Wilkins to big performances. He ultimately finished with 42 points, and though the Magic eventually lost the series in five games, it was a classic example of a guy taking over a game like few can in any era of the NBA.
Announcers: Verne Lundquist and Doc Rivers.

1 of the best all around performances of all time. When Penny went on his streaks he was unstoppable.I remember in 2001 when he and Vince Carter kept going back and fourth at one another throughout the whole quarter neither of them could miss that was fun to watch.Penny ate Pat Riley's Miami Heat for a midnight snack,Then decided to break Tim Hardaway's ankles just for shits n giggles,Nobody cant touch Penny in his prime!

Penny was a point guard, yes. A great PG before he got hurt. But putting Armstrong in at PG and moving Penny to the 2 guard was absolutely the best move in this series. It's 100% obvious if you remember this series. They got crushed worse than any team has ever gotten crushed in the first 2 and 1/4 games of the series before that move was made. Then after the move they damn near won the series.

Love the video man. My all time favorite player. Still pissed about the heat cutting him this year. Easily one of the best players ever in my book, who knows how far he wouldve gone without the injuries. This vid is a reminder of how dominant he could be without shaq, to any haters that try to say otherwise.

I paused it right there too, after hearing that dumb comment. Penny was a point gaurd, and the reason he didn't look the same more besides his injuries was because they wanted him to play shooting gaurd, but his natural position was always the point gaurd, and one of the best ever. For the short time did he played in Orlando before the injuries

Actually, Scott Skiles was the point guard when Hardaway joined Orlando in 1993.
Doc Rivers' point on the telecast was that Hardaway wasn't a true point guard. Instead, he was more of a big "combo guard" who never averaged more than 7.2 assists in a season but could really score. He could pass, too, but he was almost more in the Jordan mold, only not as strong and consistently brilliant.

Back then, a lot of basketball pundits would make the argument that Penny would never reach his full potential until he moved over to the SG/SF postion. The truth is however, Penny was never really comfortable being a scorer. Although he could score almost at will, he knew his best asset was being a playmaker. Besides, scorers come a dime a dozen but gift playmakers only come along ever so often.

I didint know shaq had to take winning shots to win the game i didint know shaq ran the offense making plays ofcourse it was penny hes the point guard the floor leader penny made shaq look like he lead the magic but it was penny's passing, shooting and IQ that made shaq looked good

  • @t4d0W
    @t4d0W 14 лет назад

@flossbee volume scorers, especially now come dime a dozen. Anyone can score with a hot hand, many touches and shooting attempts. But Penny was hella efficient due to his acumen and expanded skill set, more so than the players who play like him nowadays. Being able to score, make the most of your touches while playing good defense and getting the team involved are much harder to find.

Yeah Doc Rivers was a idiot for that statement...Penny could handle the ball better than most smaller point guards and he had the size to play the 2 and the 3...This guy was extremely talented and I hate the injuries got the best of him!!! It takes me to watch these old games to remember how good this dude actually was...

  • @ChrisM07

And Penny averaged less points than Shaq when they were together because he didn't wanna steal his spotlight. Unlike a certain someone that plays for the LA Lakers, Penny wasn't a selfish player and he allowed Shaq to be the "man" of the team since Shaq joined the team before he did. The truth is the Magic really became an elite teams because of players like Penny and Horace Grant. Shaq would've been like KG in Minnesota if Penny/Grant weren't on the team, Shaq had it easy compared to Garnett.

Alright then, so the point is without great teammates and a coach that knows to how to adjust Shaq's stats wouldn't have meant shit. Just like how Garnett's and Allen's careers were wasted before he went to the Celtics. I honestly could careless how many points Shaq scored, I'm not obsessed with stats like you are.

Yeah, that's like saying that Magic or Big O were 2 guards trying to play the PG position simply because they are bigger than the prototypical PG....another reason of why Doc is so stupid and lucked into the title last year. If they don't repeat, it will be because of Doc.

Why you removed your comment brah?!? LOL Shaq did not make the playoffs his 1st year! He made the playoffs his 2nd year because he had a good PG in Penny and they made the Finals the next year because of Horace Grant's playoff experience. Take Horace Grant off the team in '95 and the Magic would've gotten a 2nd round exit, hell probably would've gotten another 1st round exit.
    So keep talkin shit son!
