Eating up my time and patience. I prefer the built in one in ZV E1. Impossible to wait for Catalyst Slowser to fix all the footage. The ui is super counter-intuitive and if you want to be tricky and try batch processing while you sleep at night, you have to pay. Sony should develop proper in camera stabe instead of subpar applications.
Actually I have to agree with @AzsiabaSzakadtam . The app is really crap if you want to stabilize more than a couple of clips. So what is your workflow if you want to stabilize 100+ clips. No batch processing in catalyst browse and only an unusable implementation in catalyst prepare.
Just ran in to your video, did download it, installed it. Grabed my camera, did a test shot, enabled the steady shot, did a test shot. Put the camera on a gimbal, steady shot still on, did a test shot. And then stabilize those shots, WOW !!! First one was good, the second one was really great, the last one was incredible !!! So it seems like they have updated the software ? Thanks so much for this video, a game changer for me !!!
The biggist down side of catalyst browse is that the only output option for 10bit is XAVC Intra. Now you don't need to turn off the in camera stabilization for catalyst browse. The in camera stabilization movement will be written in the meta data.
Do I need turn off only electronic stabilization. Without electric stabilization movie will not cropped. And can I use only optical stabilization for my movie for then to stabilizate my video in catalyst?
i have a sony a7siii, and i test the sony catalyst with 2 kinds of preset for my camera : with no active steadyshot, and with active steadyshot. And surprise. Catalyst make a better job when the reset is with active steady shot. I have a 24-105 G lens. You have to try it
Great video, thank you! I went through the process of stabilising a couple of videos today using the latest Catalyst Browse software. The videos were captured with ZV-E10 and Sony 16-55mm f2.8 and noticed that the stabilised video was slightly less sharp and with slightly more saturated colours than the original one. Is this just my impression or did somebody else notice it too? Thanks
Nice tutorial! I have a Sony ZV-1 Mark 2 but I don't know why Sony Catalyst Browse crashes on my computer every time I try to stabilize a clip (only when trying to stabilize it crashes) plus it doesn't let me export the stabilized clip (it tells me that I need the paid version even if it is a 1 minute 4K clip). It worked fine for 3-4 clips and that's it! Using Windows 10! The software is the legit one from Sony's official website. I have tried to install it again, using an older version, same issues. :)) Keep up the good work! 🙂
I see that for SONY ZV e10 the Stabilization are stored in the footage for activestady option too, the only option where it's not working is for optical stabilization OSS
Yes - it works with Active stabilization on, but does not work with Standard stabilization. Lots of misinformation out there but you need to either have Stabilization OFF or set to ACTIVE for CB to mark clips as eligible for stabilization
I have a stabilization icon, but when I want to stabilize it, the application does not show a button for stabilization, but only a snapshot and more and nothing else
Hi Arron, I have been using CB a while now for stabilization and have found it gets me so far but I have been finding the warp stabilizer in PP gets me better results 😉👍
Thanks for your tutorials. May I ask, when I downloaded the app, it filled up my screen that I could not even see the other buttons to use them.. why is that so?
this was very helpful, thank you very much for putting it together. I do have a question. I follow your instructions on how to save the file to the T. In CB they changes are saved and after renaming it I can see that everything saved correctly. However when i click on the file to play in Quicktime the changes are not there. Just FYI I'm making the clips to upload to Instagram and YouTub. What am i missing ? Thanks for your help!
For best stabilization when walking , just use a high-end smart phone from Apple or Samsung. I use a Google Pixel 7a and it is fantastic -- like using a gimbal. Amazed that expensive cameras have lackluster stabilization, overheat, rolling shutter.
Hi, thanks for the tutorial. Just want to know about shutter speed. I always double the shutter speed to the ISO as rules of thumbs up, may I know why we need to boost higher the shutter speed? What if I use 1/50 or 1/60? do I get good result as well or no? thanks in advance
The combination of a camera on a gimbal and stabilisation of the footage through CB is perfectly possible. Placing your camera on a gimbal does not stop the camera from collecting metadata.
great video, but I'm still confused. So, by turning of the Camera's stabilization, you're able to use Catalyst, However, you're Not able to use the Camera's IBIS? So, you're Only able to use one of them?
Hi Arron, I would like to ask you a question because I have just purchased a Sony ZV-E10 camera and I use "Catalyst Browse" to do my color correction. I downloaded my video files directly to my iMac's hard drive and did the color processing without difficulty. The problem is that when I do "EXPORT", my new video file created does not take into account the added effects? Does the camera have to be connected to the computer for this to work? I even clicked on "TRANSCODE SETTINGS", and it doesn't take anything into account in the export... do you have any idea? Thank you for your help. DRJ
You should use Davinci Resolve. Because the BMPCC 4k Records Gyro Metadata which Resolve can use to stabilisation. Muuuuuuch better then Catalyst Browse
Hi I have seen lots of good tutorials like yours and they all explain how to stabilize one clip at a time. But is this the real problem? I guess there are lots of people who like me have to stabilize 100+ clips for example after a vacation trip and there is no batch processing in catalyst browse, there is not even decent batch processing in the expensive catalyst prepare software. So Do you have a good work flow for stabilizing lots of clips? Actually I do not think there is a solution for this. So maybe it is better to buy a wide angel lens and use the in Camera stabilization or use a gimbal. What do you think? Catalyst by the way is still a really buggy piece of software. It crashes a lot (on different systems)
Hi, i have an issue when rendering in catalyst browse. It stuck and cant rendering at all. I have update the software but still cant render, it shows "waiting" in rendering process, but i have waited for 2 hours for rendering 20 second video, but still no progress. I use lenovo ideapad gaming with Ryzen 5 5600H, Nvidia RTX 3060, and 24 GB of RAM. But why the software cant render the videos. Is anyone have same issue like me? Please give any thought.
I just bought catalyst prepare, just for batch/bulk stabalization for all clips, but its greyed out whenever I highlight more then 1 clip, I thought that was the point of upgrading from catalyst browse to prepare, am I missing something? Someone please help!!!!
Yesterday I did tried to stabilise several log footage filmed in 50fps with Sony a7siii and it failed . However the icon was shown , meaning it can be stabilised. On 10 bit footage works fine but not for the log footage. Does anyone know what is the problem ?
Hey Arron, I’m running into an issue keeping my date and time stamps on my clips when transferring the video to catalyst prepare.. do you have any recommendations? The work that I’m involved in requires the video to have that data visible. Any and all help would be appreciated. Thank you!
I have a question: Can you trim a video clip of footage you don't want, before you use it with Catalyst Browse? (I have trimmed a too-long clip in iMovie first, but Catalyst Browse won't use it, for example. The stabilize icon doesn't show up in the upper-right corner of the clip.)
I think your best option is to set in and out points in Catalyst Browse using your original clip and export the section you need. If you trim the clip in other software first you're likely to loose the metadata required for the stabilization.
@@ArronPrescott Thanks so much!!! I actually did figure out that I needed to do something with those in and out points, but wasn't sure if doing that would actually trim the clip, or if it would just cause the program to stabilize just that section while keeping the entire clip still there (as long). I just tried it, and, by golly, it works! Fantastic. By the way, I LOVED YOUR TUTORIAL HERE.... one of the clearest ones I've seen.
i have the little button in the corner of my clips, i click stabilize then click analyze and then the preview screen goes black, not sure what im doing wrong
Hi buddy, I have a problem because it does not stabilize at 50fps, but at 25fps there is no such problem (it stabilizes both with body stabilization turned off and with standard and active stabilization). My body a7SIII
I think the smarter move would be to edit your videos first, then at the end, before exporting, only stabilizing the clips you've used. Once done stabilizing, just put your new clips on the same folder as the non-stabilized ones (deleting them ofc) and your editing program should swap them automatically.
Not sure how the workflow would work, how would you stabilise just the used clips? My thinking is to just stabilise everything over night with 1.05 max crop, then have a sanity check and if any need more aggressive stabe to run those again (usually 1.05 is enough for me), then drag into Final Cut so you’re working with stable footage. Sometimes I run a warp stabe on a particularly challenging clip which works MUCH better on partially stabilised footage vs the raw input.
How have you found using Sony Catalyst Browse? Let me know!
Eating up my time and patience. I prefer the built in one in ZV E1. Impossible to wait for Catalyst Slowser to fix all the footage. The ui is super counter-intuitive and if you want to be tricky and try batch processing while you sleep at night, you have to pay.

I shot at 25 frames and shutter 50 and it stabilised. I am sure Catalyst has been improved and now works with steady shot on.

Coming to a handheld camera video to tell people to use a smart phone is crazy 😂
So on a wedding day instead of using my Sony fx3 I should just break out my good ol iPhone.
Is it works with canon lens?
Best video on CB yet! Thank you!

You will not get as good of an image. Catalyst browse needs enough frames per second to smooth out the video.
Thanks for a great, easy to understand review. Can you tell me if this will still work if the camera is on a gimbal and it's still a bit jittery?
The combination of a camera on a gimbal and stabilisation of the footage through CB is perfectly possible. Placing your camera on a gimbal does not stop the camera from collecting metadata.
Thank you. Have you tried it shooting in S&Q?
Thanks, Arron. I now understand where I was going wrong with Catalyst Browse... Use Manual settings, duh! Excellent 💯

@arronprescott
The last I heard is that the downsizing of 10-bit to 8 is kinda deal breaker here coz you'll lose tons of resolution unless you go for the paid ver.
This is a valid point, and not something I have encountered solely because I've only tested with the ZV-E10 which is an 8-bit camera.
So the sony zv1f can't work with catalyst browse?

why would you want to stabilize 120fps vid? doesnt it stabilized enough
the noise from your mic is so distacting. especially the part where you would stop talking and the noise goes away.
can you adjust color and export?
Thanks for the information.
The fact that it is a subscription is terrible. I'm not trying to pay monthly the whole time I have the camera
It's free if you stabilize one clip at a time, but you've got to pay to batch process your clips. I agree it should be free
