The downloadable footage on Dropbox, what codec was it shot in? I’m looking to play with some XAVC-SI footage from these cameras as that what I’ll be using should I get the cameras.
Hey Mark, as I am an underwater photographer and drawn my camera couple times already and I would recommend to use Silica Gell (pouches what you can find in shoes box or some electronics). It will absorb water and humidity faster and better than rice.
With saltwater it's also a good idea to remove all batteries / etc. and rinse in distilled water. I know it sounds bad to add extra water to the mix, but the salt and minerals are what will over time corrode elements and you want to make sure there's no saltwater left to dry. Electrical components getting wet isn't an issue so long as there's not electricity running through them at the time. Additionally, I've heard rice is fairly ineffective at water absorption so your best bet is silica if your camera gets wet.
so I can take the money I would have spent on a gimbal, and use it to get a pick-up truck for my running shots? (just kidding, the shots were impressively smooth even considering the vehicular help, good tips thanks Mark!)
Another tip: When you know you’ll be applying warp stabilizer in post, it sometimes helps to crank your shutter speed/angle so that each frame is crisp & free of motion blur.
How is this a good tip? We WANT filmic motion blur. Shooting on high shutter speed makes your footage look amateurish. Get a camera with good ibis or use a gimbal .
@@andersistbesserall things being equal, shaky footage even with warp stabilisation adds double the motion blur, so double the SS is a good idea in this context
Forget rice and the urge to try to turn it on while wet! Take out the battery and put it in in an oven, preferably with a fan and set it to 110-115 F and leave it for 5 hours. 115 is low enough not to damage plastic, electronics or CCD, like in a hot car and it ensures any water held capillary between the circuit board and any ICs will evaporate and not have time to form conducting metal salts from corrosion that will short electronics. Rice won't do that
man you're saving me so much money right now. gonna try these techniques on my next shoot. I keep thinking I need a gimbal and a crazy expensive lens but I think I can make it work without

Great video, thanks for demo on smoothing out handheld video. I just bought a cage, side grip and top handle so I will try these tips out. I have a Z5 but may upgrade to Z6ii or Z6iii when it comes out in 2024.
Thanks for the tip mark...I started shooting handheld after watching some of ur old videos last year..and here's another tip. Thank you Meanwhile, haven't stopped dreaming about the giveaway🥲
I don't hope, want or need any new cameras to come out b/c I'm perfectly happy with what I have. What I do want to come out is a new EVF from RED that works directly with all of the DSMC3 bodies without the need for an SDI cable.
Hey Mark, thanks for the video, you have been one of my go to guys over the last three years of lockdown and turmoil. Listen, I had a quick question, a few years back you did a video where you mentioned a microphone that, in your words, “makes things sound better than real life“, and I have been in search of a good voice over microphone. Can you tell me what microphone that was you were talking about? Or, if things have changed, can you recommend any decent microphones that provide a good rich texture as I have a fairly deep and rich voice. I’m leaning towards the road NTG-3. Any advice you can offer would be much appreciated. Also, on a personal note, I want to thank you for helping me branch out of my comfort zone, skill set wise… I’ve been a member of the writers Guild of America for 22 years, and during the pandemic, I was fortunate enough to sign a deal with Amazon studios, and it looks like I’m going to be producing and writing quite a bit… Along with directing and shooting things. You really are good at what you do and have a very good way of teaching. I’m going to check out your art of documentary. Be well, cheers! Jeff.
When I first saw the preview of the first running shot I was like; wow nice gimbal shot but later found out it wasn’t, thank you Mark for this tutorial, helpful 😊❤️
Love these tips!! I'll definitely be using them; however, not going to lie, sometimes I bring out the gimbal and other equipment to help my clients feel like they are getting "more" from using me. They seem disappointed if all I'm shooting with is a camera lol You are truly an incredible film maker. Thank you for making this kind of content and for sharing your knowledge!
if it went straight from the ocean to the rice, the salt will corrode your fx30 sooner or later. As counter intuitive as it sounds, the best way to do it is to take it from the salt water, to a bucket of distilled water real quick, to the rice.
Daughter works for a Kit Room in London and had two Sony FX6 dropped in a river. Didn't fair as well as you. Dooh!!! No amount of rice was gonna save those bad boys. Great Video as always. From 25 miles North of London, Be lucky stay safe.
My go-to line is "Gimbals for for SHOTS, not for SHOOTS." Don't steal that 😜 Dream camera? A7s IV (probably waiting a while)... an A7siii with 24MP stills, CineEI, and the new double-flippy screen on the A7RV.
Another awesome, fun, and informative tutorial. Your channel has been a go to as I learn my FX3, and I'm a big fan of your doc work. I only used the "standard" steadyshot till now b/c of the crop, but just did a test run in a barn with the "active" mode. Definitely smoother, but there was visible stuttering and lagging one one of the barns vertical pillars as I passed it, something I'd read about with "active" mode. The subject was unaffected. Any expereince with those sorts of digital glitches? I was at 60fps/1/125 2.8, a hair less that 50mm to mimic the 50mm focal length given the crop. And using the GMII 24-70, which doesn't have image stabilization. Applied the 5% warp in post, helped smooth things out more but not that motion-slur glitch. I'm assuming if used w/o obvious vertical (if you're walking past) features to hang up on, it would be pretty smooth, as seen in your video here, but curious if you've experienced this, or anyone else.
thanks mark for providing some footage of yours! Think i can learn a lot by playing around in post. Find it cool to see what good technology (cameras) put together with good skill & experience can archieve. Even if I'm using a fujifilm xt-4, not a sony, guess exercising will bring me to the same footage quality someday :)
I used to film Super-Yachts out of helicopters sadly before post stabilisation and IBIS etc with a large camera. It was a nightmare. I wish I had some of the tools and features and small cameras like we have now back then. Really good tips though about holding the camera away from you, I found that helped a lot, although a challenge doing it for an hour when the helicopter pulls tight turns. Also I totally agree to try and not do pans with the camera. Much better to let the helicopter do the moving.
Just a quick add, on the Catalyst Browse topic. Keep in mind that you need all stabilization turned off and can't have the camera set on any stabilizers in order for it to work (I believe). Can be a bit confusing as a viewer as throughout the video there is B-Roll from the 24-105 F4 G, which has stabilization.
What’s your source for this? Kindly share as I always have operated either catalyst browse or in-lens and in-camera, never combining catalyst with any other stabilization. Thanks
Signed up tagged some friends can’t wait and plan on signing up for the program most likely. So glad y’all came up in my recommended feed on RUclips it was subscribe at first sight lol.
Correction, you can put your camera in the ocean. Just make sure you have an underwater case. It’s worth spending the money if you really want to get those type of shots or rent it if you are only using it for a special occasion
Grat video Mark! I'm not looking forward to any new camera coming out, what I would love is firmware update for a7sIII. It's such a almost perfect camera.
Love this! I feel like the stabilization in cameras is so good these days that it definitely becomes harder and harder to bring along the gimbal. I only really find I'm on the gimbal for bigger movement activities like skiing, trail running or biking :) Awesome video though, stoked to see your Fx3 is back!
7:45 - so :) do not use the rice this way, it should be close to the camera, but not touching it. Just close the camera inside a box with rice and it will do its thing if the box is sealed. It can also be plastic bag. After you flood a camera - FIRST AND MOST IMPORTANT THING is to remove the battery, than let the water go out as much as possible. Than use the rice. And in the first moment you can send it to service - do it, there can be salt inside and even if the camera is alive, next time you go somewhere near water the moisture will go inside and use the salt to kill the camera for sure.
Thanks for insightful video. It’s about time for Sony to update the APS-C line, so I’d like to see a Sony a7000 or a6700. Something to compete with the Canon and Fuji APS-C offerings, like the R7 and XT line.
Hi Mark. Love your stuff. Now I’m no chemist but I have been told by someone who is that putting electronics that have been in contact with water in rice is a futility. Rice may dry out the device and it may start working again but it is the impurities in the water, in this case salt, are left behind and that will start to corrode the internals which sooner or later will cause the demise of your kit. Counterintuitively one way to mitigate is to wash (batteries out) your kit in pure deionised (yes I’m English) water in order to attempt to remove the contamination but there are no guarantees. I personally would be calling my insurance broker and would not trust that you got away with it.
Mark, you're getting ripped man! :) Black magic coming up with a truly pocket version would make many people happy. Sony has shown that you can fit awesome tech in tiny spaces. BM "pocket" does not make sense any more
I'm kinda hoping for a new BMPCC, been loving my 4K one for years and am interested in getting the 6K Pro for the sweet sweet NDs. Maybe that'll keep all the colour infos, NDs and awesome menus, but adds a sprinkle of IBS and a better grip!
@@_CRiT_hits_ I’m not against it, but I’ve been loving the new small batteries ZG Cine have put out. So used using like the 50wh that I use them for all the cams that I end up grabbing 😅
Question, I read the stabilised lenses disable gyro data, which makes catalyst browse impossible, is that true? - camera stabe alone works fine with catalyst though (except dynamic active). Also, what if you are doing vlogging or moving/walking with the camera? - following the 180 degree shutter rule is catastrophic in these situations, you get so much motion blur, even if you are ninja walking (but for a vlog you want to walk naturally) it's not correctable using catalyst browse or warp stabiliser. What are your recommendations for handheld shots with walking / self filming?
I'd love for Panasonic to come out with some sort of successor to the EVA-1. It's such an amazing camera but a possibile EVA-2 could maybe compete against the likes of Sony's FX6 and Canons C200 MkII which is coming soon.
Definitely curious about the upcoming Canon R replacement and the a7c II. There's a rumored FF ZV-E1, mini a7s III but for "vloggers" (no viewfinder, like the other ZVs) and with 4K 120p uncropped coming this month, but I'm not sure I want 12MP when I've just finished a 1k+ shot sports shoot and cropping a lot of them. It sounds exciting though. I hope Sony pulls it off. Plus I bet that would be in the A7 IV price range which I'm not prepared yet for now. Crossing my fingers either of the latter ones are $2000 or below. Also, I feel like RUclips 1080p has been crippled lately. I mean more crippled than before. Something's changed. Is it the AV1 codec?
I know rice is popular but it's actually not very great at absorbing moisture, at least for cameras (which have holes). The grains or even the stratch (which is very fine) could enter your device and damage it. Instead buy some Silica gels packets, it's very cheap and they are litteraly made to absord water and humidity. So dunk your camera or device in a bucket of them and you won't have any problem with rice grains or risking your gear even more. I mean yes, overall, the rice is still probably cheaper and if you only have this in your house at the moment of the incident, it's probably the way to go. But to futureproof yourselves, please juste inest in a big bag of a 100 silica gel packets. You could even toss some in you camera bag so that your gear is always dry, even if it rains a lot on you bag.
Haha I love it! Don't use a gimbal! Instead, use a car or a helicopter and you'll get the perfect shots! But seriously, gimbals are a pain in the ass... When there is a possibility to cage, add weight with batteries and a monitor, go for it. If you control nicely your moves with your whole body, you can manage to get really smooth shots. Then stabilisation in post and you're golden :)
The more I had to set up and balance a gimbal, as well as lugging it around, the more I realised that it was getting in the way of my efficiency. I've been really enjoying hand-held as of late and I think the trade off is worth it, especially if time is of importance!
Hey, Mark! Thanks for the vid! I really think that many people think they need a gimbal to create a good film. I personally think handheld footage looks more natural and I don't think this should be an excuse for not shooting
I want an fx6 body with the fx30 sensor, an fx60. Just throw a 3.5mm mic jack and xlr port on the body instead of the handle and I will be sold! Give me back my super 35 pro video body Sony! As it is rn, if I want to use my super 35 glass on a proper video camera, I would have to get an fx9 to use it in crop mode or forfeit my 4k resolution. I understand full frame is a ll the craze these days but an fx60 would make me, and I’m sure many other videographers, very happy

subbed because ive never heard anyone speak on catalyst browse & my a7iii has water damage from shooting in a hurricane... so embarrassing to take a pic of someone at an event, flip the camera around to show them their pic, & the camera flips to 4-5 images of previous pics by itself (especially if it goes into another folder from an "after hours event" lol
Hello thanks so much for the tips. Regarding the running footage what would you do if instead an asphalt ground you would have a crispy broken terrain with little bounces. I want to record an MTB short riding in a bwm gs1200 sitting backwards? You think handheld would look stable?thanks by answering I was wondering if using a gimbal would be necessary

That’s smart! I should have those on standby
Making the camera heavier as well!
Hows sensor? Manage to move any possible salt and dust? any damaged surface?
The more I had to set up and balance a gimbal, as well as lugging it around, the more I realised that it was getting in the way of my efficiency. I've been really enjoying hand-held as of late and I think the trade off is worth it, especially if time is of importance!
Hey, Mark! Thanks for the vid! I really think that many people think they need a gimbal to create a good film. I personally think handheld footage looks more natural and I don't think this should be an excuse for not shooting
I agree!
Signed up for AOD THIS MORNING, LOVIN IT! Camera I would like to see is the offspring of a Canon C200 & a C70 :))
Mate you really do get to see some very cool sh1t ,the tips on stability are phenomenal I’m always getting crap for moving to fast and not paying attention to movement the post tricks are brilliant, luv ya work man cheers
Thanks Tazy!
Great tips!! I guess you're a really cool guy too!
🤣
Which wide angle lens would you recommend for video? I have a Canon 17-40mm but when I shoot at f4 the borders are not sharp 😅
I'd like a canon c70 mark ii within the next year - Full Frame and IBIS would make it the perfect camera.
This is wild, I just searched YT for better handheld with no gimbal and here you are! I'm an AOD member too, convenient 😅 Super helpful video and I lost it at "carb tank" 😁
Really!! Really amazing images though man🎉
Great info @markbone , very useful tips.
Salt water and batteries usually don't mix, definitely learned that one a couple times the hard way. Fish tanks are a camera ops best friend
Hey Mark ! just download the footage from the Dropbox. I want to train colograding them and I'd like to know the lens used and also the picture profile, are they s log 3 or s log 3 cine ? Do you know where I can find thoses informations ? Have a super nice day !
Does anybody know when an fx6 mkII is expected to come out? I'm eager to get an fx6 but don't want to if a newer model is on the horizon...
subbed because ive never heard anyone speak on catalyst browse & my a7iii has water damage from shooting in a hurricane...
so embarrassing to take a pic of someone at an event, flip the camera around to show them their pic, & the camera flips to 4-5 images of previous pics by itself (especially if it goes into another folder from an "after hours event" lol
I am waiting for a quality BMPCC box/modular camera. I don't need the big screen. Otherwise, I'm just going to get the Z-Cam e2 S6. :/
I'm in live with my Fx30. Going to get the a7iv next
Hi Mark, did Jesse shoot the running footage on FX30 as well?
Fx3
Sony A7Siv!! Of course this is a long shot, but I can only imagine... There is talk how ever about that Sony Zv100 that will be like a mini a7siii. That also sounds pretty interesting if the price doesn't kill it. Great video as always Mark, thank you.
This is awesome!!
Is the tornado movie out?
Sony engineers frantically hiding every bottle of water & locking every bathroom when Mark visits Sony HQ.
I hope Sony makes the FX60. Think about it.
Do you turn off stabilization in your camera to use Catalyst Browse?
Panasonic Eva 1 Mark 2 would be sweet!
I hope for FX5
A super 35 version of the FX6
I also have good results with that 24-105mm on my A7III. It's a nice lens for the price in my opinion.
Just regged for 3 of your courses by the way. Excited to start learning and to connect to the community!
Love it! Welcome to the AOD community!!
Hi Mark, what do you think about FX30 with Sigma 16 f/1.4?
