  • Yesterday the Xenoblade Switch Pro Controller was finally being used by the public, and it turns out the DPAD may have quietly been improved over the regular Pro controller. Today we are going to take a quick look at the Xenoblade DPAD to see if Nintendo actually improved it or if this is a placebo effect.

    I miss the digital d pad like on 3ds. You know exactly when you hit a direction because it clicks. Thats why I have no problem using left joycon for the few games I need it for.

      Alexander Cabrera The Splatoon Controller is actually green and pink(ish) on 1 handle each now that i think about it. So the Splatoon controller is a Watermelon controller then.....
      But in the middle of the Xenoblade controller, it is green. Shaped like some sort of Sword. Huh. I guess you can slice watermelons with that sword.

    I can't understand why they won't just stick with the SNES DPAd

    • @shadowx86
      @shadowx86 6 лет назад +3

      I think the main problem is the stick that makes the distance between the boar and the controller carcase make it longer than the normal snes controller, so they need to cober that distance with a large membrane changing all the feeling

    • @Redhotsmasher
      @Redhotsmasher 6 лет назад +5

      Shadow X But if the problem is that the board is too far away from the case to just stick, say, a SNES D-pad in there, why can't they just make a spacer? Like, why not just make a plastic disc the perfect thickness with copper inserts where the contacts are and stick the whole D-Pad assembly on top of that?

    • @joemann7971
      @joemann7971 6 лет назад

      Using a SNES DPAD would require major changes to the design of the controller. Tweaking the molding is the best alternative from the manufacturing point of view. Adding something like a spacer would make things more complicated. All they really need to do is make small changes to the D-PAD molding and the membrane, and they could get the same feel without over complicating it.

    • @Redhotsmasher
      @Redhotsmasher 6 лет назад +4

      CabinDoor Separated D-pads suck, what they should do is just plagiarize the D-pad from the Sega Saturn controller because it's the best D-pad ever made.

    • @Noah-le2sm
      @Noah-le2sm 6 лет назад

      milkbullet sadly most people can't appreciate a good dpad like us especially younger people. I'm 20 and whenever I try to talk about the issues with the pro controller dpad and split joy con dpad with other people my age they just look at me like I'm crazy or say "who cares?". Because of this nintendo probably thought it would be ok to quickly implement a cheap dpad instead of working in the high quality snes dpad.

    My 2 Nintendo Switch Pro controllers has about 300 hours on them now. They are both having the same issues, the left analog stick doesn't stay in the "north" position. It will come back towards the center on its own. Kind of sucks considering how expensive these are, hopefully it's not a wide spread issue. Let me know if you guys have experienced issues with you Pro controllers, in the comments. Thanks! ruclips.net/video/dIda5leEMzU/видео.html

      Bob bobinson the problem for me which is probably just my specific controller, is i have to press firm on the right bumper to get it to work. If I don’t put constant pressure(not a lot of pressure it’s not like I have to press my hardest to get it to work lol), it will depress the button even though I have the button pressed. So like for Zelda, if I don’t keep firm pressure on the right bumper when I’m trying to throw a weapon, he’ll just immediately throw the weapon when I don’t want him to or he’ll put the weapon back down if I don’t press it firm enough right at the beginning. The dpad problem that +Trovão has is the same on mine as well. Presses up sometimes

Everything needs to be more expensive when you make exponentially more than all of your neighbouring countries - lol! This is why us poor Swedes come to work in your factories and build your houses - we're essentially the Nordic Polish! But man that money feels gooouuudddd when we get home...! : D

    The SNES D-pad is shaped the way it is because the area around it is concave by about a millimeter, and the Pro Controllers are convex. The molding around the D-pad, and the thickness of the rubber stoppers/metal contacts makes all the difference with these.

    The real thing that ups the accuracy of this controllers are the CONDUCTIVE RUBBER, they need to be closer to the PCB to actually be more precise.

    Quality video Jon(SW) good stuff man. The New Xenoblade Chronicles 2 Pro-Con's D-Pad felt different right out of the box but it is a small approvement and hopefully a step closer too getting that godlike SNES D-Pad 👍. If you haven't got a Pro-Con yet and you can find a Xeno 2 Pro-Con pick it up but don't worry if you have the original Pro-Con guys cuz the D-Pad is minimally better and for some there is zero differences.

Just as comfortable as my blue Dualshock 4 that I use on PC via it's built-in Bluetooth. Haven't tried the Pro Controller on PC yet so that does make me curious to try that. (Edit: I tested it out on PC while playing Tekken 7 and it does work quite well on my end.)

      Nesmaniac I agree, amazing how good the d-pad was on the NES... the quality of the NES controller must’ve been also a factor to it’s success:)

    Either they fixed the D-Pads in the newer models of the regular pro controller, or I just got lucky with mine. As a hardcore gamer of 20+ years who is more into NES and SNES than most modern titles, my pro controller's D-Pad functions great. No extra inputs in the menu, and zero problems playing Puyo Puyo or Street Fighter.
    I know it may be hard to believe, but there must be some pro controllers that are better, given all the complaints I've heard about it. That being said, I'd still recommend waiting until they issue a fix, as they are too expensive to be playing the D-Pad lottery. Good luck to those who try to get a good one!

    • @Faine212
      @Faine212 6 лет назад

      I am growing more and more weary if they will issue a public "fix" or even a new marketable version of the pro controller that might have fixed the D-pad issue.. if it's true that they are silently fixing the issue then you just have to be lucky and get a newer production version rather than something a seller has been holding in storage for months... it's very unfortunate I'm buying a switch soon but I want a damn pro controller because I feel I might need it... that being said I'm going to try out the joycons by themselves first..

    This was kind of a waste of time. Why would you just open it up but not also test it using the Button Tester inside the settings menu of the switch? If that that slight different in length of the peg solves the multiple unintended button presses, then this is in fact a HUGE upgrade despite only being a small plastic upgrade physically.

    At some point I was fixing up a gameboy color and I got new buttons from some website. I noticed weird things happening on Link’s Awakening DX, and I figured out the pivot on the new dpad was shorter than the original pivot. This was allowing for both right and left to be pressed at the same time. The height difference was minuscule, yet it was there. Problem stopped when I put the original dpad back in. So something similar may be happening here?

  • @johzho123
    @johzho123 6 лет назад

    There's A LOT of specs affecting Dpad ergonomics, I think the way the plastic has to work around the silicone shape also affects it greatly, what you've stated isn't all wrong though. I think the HUGE bare contacts on the board is part of the problem too.

    The Xenoblade Pro Controller is over $100 at Amazon but I also found Splatoon Pro Controller for about $85. and I was wondering if that D-Pad is a little better also? I really want a Pro Controller for motion control and NFC while having a decent D-Pad for a price that's not going to be $100 or more.

    this could explain why I was a fricken pro with combo moves and mortal kombat fatalities in the snes days but pale in comparison on modern consoles. I remember rolling the shite out of that snes dpad for all kinds of left/down/right/up/right/right/ style shenanigans

    Can confirm issues with e dpad on the reg pro controller. Never noticed until playing Xenoblade, ironically. Often when trying to "taunt" an enemy, which you do with down on the dpad, you trigger the full screen controller hint screen. Its infuriating, especially since you have just initiated combat. Picked up the Xenoblade controller last night after work. Ugh.

      I wonder if they'll actually ever fix it? or release some sort or rebranded controller with this issue kept in mind and fixed.... maybe one day... and if they start silently fixing the issue, that means you just have to be lucky and hope to get a newer revision... that would be a gamble.. either way it's just a big headache.

    • @Noah-le2sm
      @Noah-le2sm 6 лет назад

      Faine212 There are other things they could improve from the pro controller besides just the dpad. For example metal control sticks that don't get scratched up is one thing. It would be best for them to make a better, more expensive version of the pro controller and sell that as a completely different product.

    • @Faine212
      @Faine212 6 лет назад

      dude things degrade over time, it's fine, all xbox controllers are plastic too, so?... no.. the real issue is the Dpad dude, because it doesn't let you control the game functionally.. then what's the point of a controller if not to control all your favorite games properly?

    honestly, my splatoon and xenoblade pro controllers both register the wrong direction often. for instance, in rocket league i'll press the up direction to pull up 4 chat comments but it'll register that i pushed left. sometimes i end up saying the wrong thing because of this. i will say it feels different, and i can even go as far as saying the action feels better on the xenoblade controller, but the accuracy seems worse to me, at least with mine. maybe i got a lemon. odd that the same thing happens with my other LE pro controller, tho...

      there are people who buy controllers also for the Dpad not just everything else, so to THOSE people this issue poses a problem since the Dpad is just not functional, same as if the sticks were trash and kept registering the wrong direction you were moving... a controller is designed to control the game... that's the number one thing it should do...
