  • This question of "Should I ECU tune" my car comes up often in the comments so I thought I'd address it. If you are running a naturally aspirated motor, I'd pass, if it's turbo'd then a tune might be a good idea. Watch the video to learn more.

    That's a non-argument.... the tuner does not give you a 200K miles warranty -- neither does Mercedes, Porsche or BMW. So you really need to show us the stats on all those prematurely blown engines.

    Totally agree. NA engines are pretty maxed out as is and not worth the minor gain. Now if your throwing a supercharger or turbo on it then it's a good idea. Need to upgrade intake and exhaust first as well as a bigger cooler. Headers are optional but not necessary. Pretty much everything you already said.

    To add on to what was said in this video, you cannot add in more fuel as that will only cause more smoke (usually at full throttle cars from factory run at an air fuel ratio that is ideal or close to ideal for peak power. While at low throttle inputs they tone it down to a more efficiency-based AFR) so you would need to add more air. The only way to get more ponies is to:
    1. Block EGR if it exists on the car to prevent the exhaust gases from taking the place of fresh air.
    2. Run higher octane fuel.
    3. Straight pipe the car - or get a high-flow exhaust setup.
    4. Get a better flowing camshaft - which will allow you to increase the amount of fuel as there will be more air at higher RPM.
    5. Nitrous.
    Well there are more methods (they go way more in depth and are more costly, but these are the simplest and I guess cost-effective).

      @MrHungarianHammer watch the warranty claims roll in... manufacturers absolutely detest paying out warranty claims. It's a business loss. How many years was the mazda warranty? I used to work for them and most tend to be x years/unlimited km format and the cars conveniently fail after warranty period expires or claims are denied to due to 'customer error'. Trust me when I say manufacturers dont want to stand behind their product, but have to to sell them.

    I like a lot of your videos, but I have to disagree with this one. I got an ESS tune on my 13 e92 m3 and it made a huge improvement. I also got the tune to delete my CAI light that was on due to my test pipes. I have full exhaust, intake, and pullies, but the tune made the biggest difference, in performance, by far. The vehicle now runs much smoother, the rpm limiter is lowered while the engine is warming up (for engine saftey), and my fuel economy is much more efficient. The last reason I went with ESS is in roughly 6 months when I purchase their supercharger, ESS will simply email me the new tune for the supercharger, I'll upload it and be good to go. The tuner can also do a full engine diagnostic as well as code clearing.

    Your rationale makes sense regarding the value in tuning an NA engine versus a turbocharged engine. However, the same argument against tuning an NA engine regarding its reliability, can also be true for turbocharged engine (I.e. the manufacture set it up that way for a reason). Just because you haven't had a problem with your tune turbocharged engine doesn't mean he'll be reliable for everyone else. The same argument could be applied if you tuned a naturally aspirated engine and it didn't explode, it doesn't mean the same would be true for everybody else.

    • @shardsofcontent4829
      @shardsofcontent4829 7 лет назад

      Terry Forth. True, in general. But With BMW specifically, the engines are typically over engineered and capable of significantly more output than they come from the factory. That doesn't mean there isn't a cost, but some engines are better than others to tune. Of course you need to pay attention to the rest of the drive train, but as with engines, some manufacturers will put a heavier transmission than required simply because of availability and space ... so it really depends on the vehicle. BMW tends to indulge their drive trains with "high service factor" which is why you see them tuned so regularly.

    So what about engines that have had a cold air intake system added? The MAS location has been adjusted with this mod and I feel like a tune taking this into consideration is appropriate to truly reap the benefit of the system. Also, to my understanding, the biggest benefits of ECU tuning are not necessarily to crank out more hp/torque, but rather improve responsiveness and performance. I have a 2012 Raptor and contemplating tuning for these reasons...thanks.

    It kind if scares a little paying so much money and possibly leaving me risking issues along the way. Especially if power gains,are nit that much anyway but keeping it within safe tolerance. I asked myself... how does a tuner determine a,safe tolerance? What guarantee will I get, should something go wrong?
    I don't see any guarantee offer on the tuners website, making me even more weary.
    I decided that the risk and the small gains,are not worth the money and the risk and cancelled my booking.

    If you don't have any other mods on the car, then a tune on NA will not get you much at all. However, after changing intake and exhaust, even NA cars will benefit from a tune. Don't expect much more than better drivability and a small increase in peak power. The biggest gain is overall area under the curve. I had an NA VW Jetta that had intake, exhaust, and cam upgrades. Once I got a custom tune which took into account those changes, as well as running higher octane fuel, the car woke right up. Did it have huge hp gains? No, but the engine pulled from 2500 all the way to 6200 with a nice flat torque curve.

    The problem with asking a tuner for a 200,000 mile warranty is that you're essentially asking them to bet their business on their potentially lunatic clientele. I'm talking about the nutjobs that want to throw turbos and nitrous on a 200,000 mile junkyard motor that's already loud enough to shatter windows and has an idle that totally crap. Then when the idiot blows the engine to kingdom come, the next thing you know, the leadfooted idiot has hired a lawyer and is now suing the tuner for blowing up his already fucked motor that was already one foot in the grave to begin with.

    You won’t do any damage with advancing the ignition. Now, leaning out the mixture to gain power makes everything run hotter- bad on cast and non forged internals. Increasing boost pressure is much worse. Higher pressures mean blown head gaskets and higher temps. Increasing boost is RISKY. Don’t tune a car you need to be reliable- unless you got $$$

  • @JamesMotorsport
    @JamesMotorsport 8 лет назад +2

    With this specific engine (S65) I think you're right on the money. And it kind of goes with a lot of 100ish hp per litre engines. It's quite the feat of research and engineering to get those results from an N/A engine with a warranty and no driveability issues. Supercharge or turbo one? sure that's cool but its going to get real expensive if you plan on it lasting long. And at that point it may be more cost effective to start with a 335i to have some big HP number. The record on the N54 is something like 800whp on a stock longblock.

  • @niko2002

    ECU Tune is the last thing you should consider when you have these mods: turbo/supercharger, aftermarket exhaust system, K&N air filter, better inner-cooler, maybe even a high quality radiator (to fit more coolent) just to keep the car reliable as possible, the only downside is really expense but, all cars differ with mods and really it’s about personal preference so, if you want that extra power and also mpg then it’s probably worth it. An ECU Tuner is a Tuner’s best friend. (Agree or disagree???)

  • @mareksumguy1887
    @mareksumguy1887 6 лет назад +1

    The question is: how far away is my engine from MBT. If its far away... then you will see significant gains with ECU tuning. If its not... then you will see minimal gains. The problem is, that, the only way to find out is to start tuning.... which means you've already spent the money. So its kind of a gamble if you have no reference point (documentation).

    I am with you about the turbo engines cause you gain lots of power with just an ecu tune instead of an N/A motor but the horses that you will gain from the N/A trust me will be more puncy more aggressive..... I have a bmw e36 328i and I tune the ecu plus intake and headers... It put down 231ps 310nm... I tested with a golf gti 250ps only ecu upgrade an I was 2 cars in front from 20kmh until 220kmh...and with a 435i stock until 170kmh I was minor in front... So with my expirience an N/A motor has more manly and aggressive dilivery... Plus I drive it every day for the last 2 years....😀

    @Aluzcz 4 года назад +1

    ECU Remap is in general quite of a scam and I will tell you why. Even if you do everything the right way. The only way chip tunning, ecu tunning or remap is adding the power is that they can change one or all of the following - AIR, FUEL, IGNITION. You can not do much with the ignition especially in diesel cars which are the most chip tuned here in EU, usually the most of the gain comes from putting more air/fuel into the engine, in other words letting the turbo compress more air into the engine.
    You go to the tuning specialist, they should have the dyno suitable for your car(the 4x4 car should be never tested as a FWD). First they will first run the car with the stock map - show you the results(which can be easily rigged), after they load they own map, do few runs maybe change the map in the process and after they do the final run and present you the numbers.
    The problem here is that if you will let the CAR to be tested on different dyno in different company, you will always get different results and I'm not talking about some small percentage.
    What you are actually paying for is a feeling and numbers they present but in general every dyno will show different results, even thou all of them usually use DIN70020.
    Yes you will get some power, but how much and for how long thats the question.

    I generally agree with your take on n/a engines. However, there are exceptions. For example, in Europe, we have the Mazda 3 2.0 n/a with 120 and 165 hp. Well, it you have a look at the power curve, you see that the power is electronically limited after 4000rpm. Reprogramming just removes that limit.

    • @MiniLST
      @MiniLST 6 лет назад

      Exactly. Was looking for this argument.
      Many n/a cars for the euro market is downtuned to meet demands on tax, insurance and emission. The Mazda 3 120hp (135 for real) is the same engine as the 165 hp version, but choked off at 4000 revs.

    what can be done on NA engines to improve them, outside of intake/exhaust, what about chipped or is that the same as a eco flash?

    • @410cultivar
      @410cultivar 5 лет назад

      Chipping is for older ECUs and this guy is right on a few things but very wromg on others. If you are going to change your intake and exhaust then you should get your ECU tuned on a N/A engine. The factory parameters will only advance so much. And as the engine gets older it leaves no room to adjust at all. So tunning a stock N/A engine isn't the,most cost efficient upgrade, but it is if you plan on modifiying the ammount of air/fuel the eninge is going to burn/exhaust.

    • @tommypearson9260
      @tommypearson9260 4 года назад

      @@410cultivarI was told the opposite that despite changing the intake and exhaust a tune still won't do anything pretty much you'll gain what the bolt on gave you and exhaust + Premium gas and hope you got something a little more the Air /Fuel ratio is corrected by the ECU with in 5 minutes of turning it on the ECU will learn the new ratio on it's own
      It's also pointless to dyno when it isn't getting no more than 20 at best hp gains with the install and that's better than nothing but still Dyno to prove it had gains is just stupid when we know the gains were very small
      I tried to tell my forum this and they think it's stupid but it's proven CAI and Exhaust equal a little more bang how much bang is depended on the mods and car a tune ain't going to help a NA car by no stretch that is why I use a pedal commander instead in combination of a CAI and Exhaust swap plus premium gas I was told even if it's a small upgrade premium always helps I know people say that's BS but my truck runs smoother and has a better mpg vs 87

    Well actually all car manufacturers set their cars up to fail at some point... Car manufacturers don't make that much money if they're cars are lasting 500,000 miles plus night and day. So if after a certain milage an ecu is programmed to start risking the engines life to bring them back to the dealer than maybe yeah you should tune a car to your liking or for your application and it could be a more useful long term tune. So with an educated tuner you could extend the life of your car or at least your engine.

      Thats stupid, manufacturers have to meet certain emissions and noise regs so they respectfully detune the engine or software, also they are tuned for lower octane fuels.

    I do a decent ammount of tuning in my area, and i agree with the NA motor thing you can get 5-10% performance increase (somewhat safely), and you can get that by injecting fuel earlyer and playing with sparks, also you can increase A:F a bit, But turbocharged cars are a lot better, Because more air can be forced in, 100-250 mBar (safely) and increase fuel for that ammount of air, injection timings, ETC. Most common things i tune are disels. usualy there can be increase 20-40% in power, Especialy with undertuned factory common rail 2.0TDI motors. I saw other "tuners" do bad tunes, basicly some people increase all maps for 10% and the car will run better but it will run unhealthy.

    I can understand the why bother attitude towards tuning a completely bone stock vehicle. The type of vehicle makes a big difference also-but when you own a vehicle that’s been modified like ram air, larger throttle body, headers and exhaust, camshaft etc. then there’s no way around it you have to remap. but honestly anyone who is tuning for performance I’m pretty sure they realize it’s going to get bad fuel mileage or their warrantee will be toast. or The likelihood the engine won’t last as long is real. these people are usually more worried about performance. either way there are thousands of scenarios why people would want to remap. like maybe better pulling performance in a Diesel truck. A good performance chip monitors engine temp, transmission temp, exhaust gas temp like Banks performance. has enough safety features to keep you from hurting anything. The chip will simply cut back on power to prevent damage. you get what you pay for... if your engine is bone stock and if you’re not disciplined enough to use this new found power “occasionally”and you’re just beating the piss out of it every day then yes! You may have a grenade with the pin pulled waiting to go off. if someone asked me about remapping. The first thing I would ask what type of vehicle? The second thing I would ask what their expectations were? The third thing would be how much money do they have to spend to do it rite? then give my answer.

    Best n.a. cars to remap are ones like mini one with the 90hp engine as it's the same engine as the 115hp cooper just detuned getting a bluefin tune for 250 quid maps it the same as the cooper plus an additional 10hp so the 90hp goes up to 120hp so detuned cars from the factory are the best options for remap as well as the vw tdi pd engines but that's going into detuned turbo engines

      sher854 Yes exactly what we were thinking. But would you tune it after? Iv heard somwhere that Clubsport are sensitive. Also iv heard that a Golf R example, have stronger internals & that it have bigger turbo. My neighbour who is very much into cars says my turbo gets Veery hot, but iguess its common when the engine outputs as much power in little space as the EA 888? Iv also heard that Stage 1 tune should be fine, as long as you maintain it (regular oil change etc). But all these diffrent info, makes me kindof torn. Idont drive the car much more than perhaps 1-3 times a week & i drive kinda short distances if that helps? But i do own a engine heater, would you suggest using it before racing, or is it better to start engine a few mins before?

    What about tuning to remove all governors from the engine imposed by regulations? Some engines run better without government regulations. I own a 300c Hemi 5.7 and I’m looking to tune it. No mechanical work. Just ecu to take away all limitations with rev and top speed. I’ve learned with older cars that with these things are taken away the car gets better fuel mileage. Emissions control may help the environmental issues but it costs the customers money at the pump. And maybe we should pay more

    • @410cultivar

    your talking about ecu tuning but in reality you've talked about 1 specific car so your comments could be correct when talking about say the m3. but what about the different models that essentially have the exact same engine... for example 316,318,320? what's your opinion for example of remapping a 316 with the same engine as the 320 to use the same timing and sparking of fuel to get the performance of the 320 in your 316?

      Jamie that's not what you said in your first comment. But anyway like I said, watch the video again. If the engine has forced induction (turbo/supercharger) then it also must have a way to control this component which can be adjusted for more boost --> more power

    There are out there cars with seriously down rated engines, and then you can, with few smart tweaks get like 30% to 50% more power. That is a jack pot, but usually comes with the hefty price tag on the car like that. Then there are tuners and "tuners". Tuner will see how your engine behaves and will tell you the truth if it is unhealthy to push engine more than stock. The other, more frequent kind does not care. I wold recommend to all people who want more power to teach them self about engine "science" and how engines are tuned, then when you know all, hire a tuner.
    If you just want a service from third party, that will give you more power - I strongly advice, stick with stock engine, and collect money for your next car that will give you STOCK performance you like.
    This means if one does not fully understand engine principles with all win and loose points in process of stock engine tuning, just don't do anything. Buy stock car that gives performance you want and that is how you will save your self from very likely disappointment.

    Search ford xr6 ford xr6 turbo ford xr8 and fpv F6 typhoon F6 tornado F6X territory and Fpv GT, GTP, GTE, GTF and you'll see some crazy safe results with huge amounts of power!!! Take a 700hp at the wheels ute for drive or a 1000+hp f6

      Also see what little upgrades and a tune are needed for a inline Aussie turbo ford 6cyl 2 tonne awd SUV to run 11's the fpv F6X or even base mode the ford territory turbo.
      Ford made a big mistake not letting Aussie Falcons Tickfords and FPV ( Ford Performance Vehicles ) from being exported. You don't need your big trucks in the states slow gas guzzlers you could have had a UTE and xr6 turbo or tornado and pursuit and super pursuit Utes would eat anything you have and the Falcon range would have killed the mustang. Both sportier better looking with more power and the Falcons 4 doors and trunk to fit 3/4 bodies in lol. And you would have got them at a good price with plenty of mods to get the new mustang 380bhp the last GTF 580bhp stock and one of the most coolest 2000's model we built the only factory hand built 347w the Tickford T3 TE50 and the TS50 and the Pursuit 250 and the au xr8 220 check them out if you just want to see some awesome vehicles that arnt American euro or Japanese. Especially at the race tracks they ate up Ferraris vipers Porsches m3 m5s etc for breakfast We also made the Mitsubishi magna range awesome fwd and AWD cars think they were exported to the states as diamontes or something and our own Ralliart version if your into cars please check them out I like American muscle too but GM sucks! The 03 Terminator mustang I think has been the best and the 65-67 old school and all the hemi's are great the srt8 would get eaten by the F6X or turbo territory. And anything Aussie muscle from the 70's you'll love the XW GTHO PHASE 2 the XY GTHO PHASE 3 fastest factory 4 door car in the world at the time and then the XA GT RPO83 the phase 4 got canned because it could easily do 200+ miles an hr. The XB sedan and hardtop the mad max car the XC cobra the XD and XE in phase 5 and 6 body kits. And our own legendary Crystler charger e38 and e49 six packs with a Aussie slant 6 253 engine. And don't forget we not Porto Rico have the most and best and baddest rotaries in the world Japan even build the Bathurst Type R only for Australia. You might get a "higher red line"??? Red line is the RPM's that a motor is likely to mechanically fail. Say you miss a gear and over rev your motor, you could potentially float a valve due to the valve spring not being strong enough and that valve gets hit by the piston.
