Cut Glass Bottles Using a Soldering Iron

- I got tired of trying to cut bottles using the popular hot/cold water method, only to end up with a jagged cut. So I searched and searched, then found another way! This technique does take a lot longer, but it also gives you more control of where the bottle cuts.

This link is the video that taught me this method. After a lot of experimenting, I modified the technique a little. One major thing to note, just use the tip of the soldering iron. DON'T use the thicker parts (heats too much area and can cause random cracks):

Thanks mate, have been breaking bottles in the wrong places all week. Now have the parts cut an polished nicely, thanks to you.
Now, solder it back together. 🤣👍
Thank you. Very well explained.
nice job, thank you for the video, nice cut
i just cut my first bottle with the soldering iron, the result PERFECT CUT,thank tou, with my soldering iron didn't take so long
I'm glad it was helpful! I still remember how excited I was the first time I saw the crack growing with the soldering iron.
Thank you for sharing this.
You may want to build a jig to hold the soldering iron.
That's a good idea
Oh my god , this is great idea ! Thank you
Really interested in trying this out because I want to turn a couple of Jack Daniels bottles into utensil holders for my barbers. Tried the hot/cold water shock treatment but keep getting cracks travelling down into the part i want to keep. You guarantee that this definitely helps to control the crack? I don't mind spending time on it.
Yes, this method does give you more control of where the crack goes. But one thing I've noticed with doing this on square bottles, they tend to take longer to start cracking sometimes. And sometimes when the crack starts, it shoots towards the top. But I've been able to salvage the cut by guiding the other end of the crack around the bottle. If you haven't seen my video on cutting square bottles, you can check that one out to see what I mean. I start showing a problem square bottle about 4 minutes into the video. ruclips.net/video/_jRNuVxLsfE/видео.html
And how many hours did it take
Oh ... that's cool. Thank you sir.
I ll try this easy n safe trick.

very good good good idea.!!!
+Ricardo Arturo Sánchez Núñez Thanks! I appreciate that!
Slow process but more refine. I think I like this better
Thanks! A lot of people don't like how slow it is, but I love how much control it gives you.
I feel like it's going to shatter in my eyes. I keep blinking and moving my phone away watching this
Would you share how you made the set up which holds your bottle for cutting?
I'm working on a better design, but before I get to that I'll try to do a tear-down and explanation of how I built this one. I added a link in the video description to another video that is similar this my design. Hopefully that helps until I can get time to do my tear-down video.
Thanks. If you're making an improved model I don't mind waiting to see that one. :-)
It will probably be a few months before I can get to that. But until then, here is a video I made on the one I have right now. ruclips.net/video/qRf38Rg-Nlg/видео.html
After cutting you could just drop the bottle inside hot water. Alot faster and cheaper.
That is good idea ایده خوبیه
Thank you!
Hello! Is it possible to apply this method to glass sheet for round holes?
I think it depends on the type of glass and how thick it is, it might. This isn't very practical for think glass. If you can find a glass cutting drill bit, that would be more reliable. But if you need a big hole and can't find a big enough bit, you could try this.
я чувствовал как старею смотря это видео)))))
can i use this process to a porcelain vase? thanks!
That's a good question, but I'm not sure if this will work on porcelain. If you have any scrap pieces to test on, I would recommend trying on those before trying on your vase.
Would a heat gun for smd soldering work?
I don't have a heat gun to try it with. I think I have seen some videos with people using a heat gun, so I'm assuming it should. I think you would need a bowl/bucket of cold water to dunk it in after, but I may be wrong. Definitely a good idea to experiment with.
yes. please share how you made the set up to cut.
Finally made a video of that. Here it is! ruclips.net/video/qRf38Rg-Nlg/видео.html
Why not get a weak price of metal tube that fits onto the soldering iron tip snuggly, and bend the pipe around the bottle, the lay it on a non flammable surface and turn on the iron for while
Never saw this method.. I tried other ways and they never worked! I was offered some bottles and I was like.. what exactly can I do with all of them?? I will try this out soon!
Hope this method works well for you! It does take a bit of practice and patience. I always recommend practicing on thin bottles (like soda or beer bottles) before thicker bottles. Thin bottles are easier to do.
I got hella annoyed with it and said F it! I made a pot of boiling water and ice and the bottom popped off lol
It can be very annoying when it doesn't work. Glad you found a method that did work for you tho, thanks for sharing that!
Would rubbing ice over it cause it to crack sooner?
That's a really good question. It would, but from my experience it's also more likely to spread the crack where you don't want it.
What should be the wattage of soldering iron?
+Srinivasan Salem the one I use is 30 watts, but higher wattage will work too.
Why is it for round bottle you score all around but for square or odd shape bottle you only score 1 or 2 inch ?
That's a really good question. The only reason is because it's much easier to score all the way around with a round bottle and keep a straight score line. A score line is needed for starting the crack. After the crack is started, the score line isn't required, but it is helpful.
Or just go to the pub !!!😂
That's an even better idea!!
is there a way to make a small hole using this method?
+Tim you can use this method to make some holes, but it's probably not going to work for making a small hole. I'm actually working on a video that will be going into more detail on this.
How many watts is your iron?
The soldering iron I use is 30 watts.
How Do You? DIY Thank You! Forgot to say that I enjoyed your video too.
Thanks, I appreciate your support :-)
Weird question, but could you make a hole in a bottle with a soldering iron?
+Jacob James based on the experiments that I have tried, it may be possible to make a big hole with this method, but not a small hole.
How Do You? DIY Gotcha, thank you
Yee be making a bong : )
why don't you use water for the temperature shock?
+Josiah Baker I haven't had as much success using water as I do with this method. It may be able to be used with this method to speed it up though. I just haven't had much success with it.
so u wont get a refund for this bottle
In the scoring setup you had at the start of the video, couldn't you just have a spring loaded soldering gun where you want the score/cut and have a motor turn the bottle very slowly while the soldering tip does the cutting?
That's a good question. I'm assuming it would work. With how long this technique takes, it would be nice to have a setup that does the tedious, time consuming work for you. The only issue I can see is if someone were to get it started and forgot about it. Just as long as someone keeps an eye on it while it's running, I would love to see that design change in action!
Well, the bottle would be turning extremely slow so either make your break quick or add a timer on the machine.
or at least have the soldering iron fixed like the glass-cutter...so its easier to turn it by hand...
Talking just like Charles Bukowski, go all the way.
A canle works better
And then you call it a day
Uses a bottle cutter to make a trace line lmao for the soldering iron when he coulda jus cut the bottle
I mean, the whole purpose of this video is to show how to do this with a soldering iron. It needs a score line from a bottle cutter to start the crack. Just heating with the soldering iron won't do it. This is also a lot more accurate and reliable than using hot water/cold water.
This process takes too long, totally uneccessary.
