    I use a carbide but STOP before drilling all the way through. Hole still large enough for wires and minimizes the chance of breakage.

    When the drill bit finally goes through the bottle it is hard to not hit the bottle with the head of the drill causing a crack or shattering the bottle. I put a RUBBER BAND on the shaft of the drill bit to avoid cracking the bottle.

    You could drill a hole through a piece of cork to act as a stopper so the drill doesn't hit the glass. This could take the place of the Plastic Piece that you taped to the bottle as well.

    You could also use a nail and hammer to drill a hole. Dip the glass bottle inside a bowl or basin of water until it is fully submerged and use the nail to drill the hole on the desired spot using the hammer.

      I have a video about cutting bottles, but rather than using that method I would recommend using something like a Dremel with a diamond cutting wheel to cut the bottle. As far as putting a hinge on it, I would recommend drilling the holes for the hinge bolts before cutting the bottle. Hold the hinge in place, mark where the holes are, then drill those places.

    I've tried drilling a hole in 5 glass bottles and all cracked before i even made a hole, I was using a new 8mm tungsten carbide tip ensuring they were within a flow of water and I didn't apply too much pressure. I don't think I was doing anything wrong by the looks of how you drilled it, could it perhaps have been the glass or the drill bit is too large?

    • @HowDoYouDIY
      @HowDoYouDIY  4 года назад +2

      For that size of hole it might be better to use a diamond bit. I think the carbide tipped bits might heat up the glass more, but I'm not completely sure about that. With the bit you have, you could try drilling slower, or even pausing the bit for a few seconds every now and then, while keeping the water flow going. This could help keep the glass from getting too warm. Or it may be the glass. If the glass is thin you can try using less pressure. Sometimes just the weight of the drill is the most pressure you want to use.

  • @quentinmoten8871
    @quentinmoten8871 4 года назад +2

    Do you think that you can drill a hole in a glass bottle if you have a steady hand and you oil the drill bit and also the spot that you have marked with a black marker before drilling the hole gradually and without a lot of pressure as you have said in your video?

    • @HowDoYouDIY
      @HowDoYouDIY  4 года назад

      If you use a bit made for glass, yes that should work. Make sure you wear protection from the glass dust from drilling. Also remember, regular drill bits don't work well for glass and will get dull easily.

  • @vgraser
    @vgraser 4 года назад +2

    If I’m drilling into the bottom of a mason jar with a diamond blade, can I just fill the dented bottom of the glass with water and leaving it there instead of having the constant flow through a bottle? The sitting water pools in the mason jar bottom.

    • @HowDoYouDIY
      @HowDoYouDIY  4 года назад

      Yes, that should work. The important thing is to keep the tip of the bit wet, and also the glass where you're drilling.

    • @HowDoYouDIY
      @HowDoYouDIY  4 года назад

      Yes, you just need a large enough diamond bit.

    • @valkyriesardo278
      @valkyriesardo278 3 года назад +1

      This is my intent also, to insert an electric cord so I can create a lamp. I had a 2 foot tall glass vase shaped like an urn. The glass was semi-translucent in a lovely pale apricot color with an iridescent cast. I hung a small incandescent night light bulb over the lip of the vase. The trailing cord always annoyed me but the effect was gorgeous. The bulb lit the entire jar with a soft glow like a harvest moon. I broke that vase a long time ago and am on the hunt for another. This time I want to drill a hole for the cord which is what brought me to this video. What I'm wondering is if there is some sort of rubber gasket that can be applied to the rim of the drilled hole. I'm supposing it would help protect the cut glass rim and protect the electric cord from abrasion. Also I'm wondering how far up from the base is the best location to drill. I imagine cutting right at the base is unwise on the hunch that the very bottom edge is a structural weak point in the glass.

    • @HowDoYouDIY
      @HowDoYouDIY  3 года назад

      There probably is a rubber gasket of some sort that you could find. I would recommend checking out rubber grommets. Or you could fill the hole with hot melt glue. As far as drilling close to the bottom, I'm not aware of that area being weaker. I would recommend practicing on some random bottles to get a feel for it and to see if it is weaker.

    • @valkyriesardo278
      @valkyriesardo278 3 года назад +4

      I would avoid an infinite supply of running water when working with electric power tools. Even with the best of care, the drill can slip and you risk electric shock. The small bottle in this video serves as a limited reservoir and provides only a tiny stream of water. Also, the drill is elevated above the work surface. That setup looks a lot safer to me. If the drill slips there is no more than an off chance that it will overturn the catch basin and allow water to connect with the electric juice.

      That's a really important point I forgot about. Especially since the plumbing is most likely grounded. Thanks for sharing your observation!

    • @HowDoYouDIY

      It should be possible with the correct bit. I have a different video where I drilled a hole that was maybe 2-3mm in glass. I used a different type of bit and a slightly different process, but here's a link to that video. The description of that video also has a link to the bit that I used (it's a diamond burr) ruclips.net/video/BDAc0ZWjVjs/видео.html

  • @davidmcguire6043

    Turns out my way is better. A cheap drill press, & a sponge to drill through to cool the bit. Also with those Diamond bits you can get diamond dust in your cooling water and when the bit punches through that water can go into the bottle and etch lines into the inside of it. put water in your bottle and a cap on it to prevent this. the diamond dust water will fall into the water in the bottle and be diluted so you can pour it out without etching glass.

    • @HowDoYouDIY
      @HowDoYouDIY  2 года назад +5

      I appreciate you sharing your ideas. On the surface, using a sponge like that seems brilliant. Unfortunately, trying it shows some flaws. Using a flow of water has multiple purposes:
      1. Flowing water is constantly going into the hole, cooling off the drill bit at the tip, and taking the heat away. Drilling through a wet sponge only does this to a limited amount. It will also keep the heated up water near the bit. Plus the friction of the bit with the sponge will dry out the sponge next to the bit.
      2. Flowing water helps clean out the hole as you're drilling. If you use a sponge, the sponge will hold the glass debris at the hole. This will cause the diamond grit on the bit to get clogged and it becomes less effective. This causes more friction, which means more heat. It also wears out the bit a lot faster.
      3. Flowing water helps to keep the dust from getting airborne. It's really bad if you're breathing the glass dust. Using a sponge can also be good for this, but comes with the other problems I just mentioned.
      If the bit is properly cooled and cleaned while being used, the chipped off diamonds will be minimal and mostly rinsed away before they can get into the bottle. Any diamond bits that do get into the bottle should be small enough and light weight enough to not scratch the glass. But having the bottle filled with water would still be helpful. Having it completely submerged in water could be even better.

    • @HowDoYouDIY
      @HowDoYouDIY  5 лет назад

      If possible it's best to use a bit as close to the size you need, but smaller if it's not exact. Then you should be able to use a sanding drum or diamond grinding attachment with a Dremel. Just make sure you protect your lungs and eyes from the dust that will get into the air, and wear gloves in case the glass shatters.

    Do you have any suggestions for the drilling of a 1" hole in the bottom of a bourbon bottle to turn into a lamp? I have done four bottles now and 3 of the bottles got small cracks in the glass towards the end of going through the glass.
    I am using a diamond hole saw, 250 RPM, and glass never gets warm touch, due to constant water being applied and only the weight of the drill is being applied.
    Any advice would be appreciated.

    • @HowDoYouDIY
      @HowDoYouDIY  2 года назад +2

      I've been thinking about this a lot after you posted your question, it's a bit confusing. It's possible that since the bottom of the bottle is thicker, the inside of the glass might be getting a bit hot even though the outside is staying cool. You could try stopping half way thru and filling it with water to cool off the inside.
      If you are able to completely submerge the bottle while drilling, that could also help, especially if you can keep it full of water while drilling. Just make sure you get all of the bubbles out.
      You could also try slowing down even more, and lifting up some of the weight of the drill towards the end.
      I hope this helps 🤞

    • @HowDoYouDIY

      That's a really good question. Tiny holes are a bit tricky, just because on the drill bit sizes. Glass thickness shouldn't affect the method much. You could use this same method, but with a diamond burr bit instead of diamond drill bit. Something like this: amzn.to/2V72Zu2
      It just depends on if you can find a bit small enough for the hole size you need.
