    • Cut A Thick Wine Bottl...
    In today’s video, we have a quick sneak peak of the almost finished shop… AND I try a few different methods to control the cut of a THICK glass champagne bottle and finish to a smooth usable drinking glass.
    I use a standard bottle cutter to get the initial line scored in the bottle and then show the various ways I try to heat before landing on a technique that works perfectly.

      BSN Rao thanks for stopping by and taking time to comment... I appreciate it. This process may be a bit slower than the other methods, but it really works out for me and i feel like i really have control of whats happening. Now, most every time I get what i want.. i have another video that i do another larger bottle and use oil around the cuts and that also seems to direct the heat pretty well. You can check it out here if you feel so inclined. Thanks again for the comment!! ruclips.net/video/0KXbx-bt3ps/видео.html

    I've been using this technique for a few years now, and it is by far my favorite way to cut bottles! I'm happy to see that you discovered it too! By the way, you are 100% right that the crack is following the tip of the soldering iron. The crack will even follow it away from the score line, if you guide it away.

    When I do this I use a small handheld eagle torch (found at any corner hoodmart or smoke shop and most gas stations) just w bit bigger then that the torch you use and. and an ice bath and it is very quick and does not warp or mess with the glass anywhere but on the cutline. I dig the soldering iron hack I'll have to give that a go. Hello there. a full week. I'm dealing with this damn bottle cut. I think I ruined about ten bottles. The tool was great, but the problem was with the diamond cutter. I need some more to cut it like it's sliced. Not challenging and fully sliced in your quarters. I figured this wasn't as easy as it seemed. And I watched you carefully. Thank you for sharing....

    • @fleanine
      @fleanine  4 года назад

      Thanks for watching and commenting, Im not quite sure I understand... are you trying to cut the bottle into several rings? That is possible with this method as well, but it does take some practice. Also getting just the right pressure with the glass cutter is important. Too much is not good... Too light, it won't work.. and you only want to go around the bottle once.. don't cut over the same line twice. I have another video i posted after this one that I also try using some oil on the line to help direct the crack as well, may be worth the watch... ruclips.net/video/0KXbx-bt3ps/видео.html

    Just wonderin if there was enough room to get that candle under the rollers on your cutter somehow, or make another board with four little rollers on it high enough to slip a candle underneath the cut?

    • @fleanine
      @fleanine  4 года назад +1

      ken Lane You could do something like that, and set up a roller system just for heating. absolutely. however, I find that the soldering iron really allows you to pinpoint where you’re putting the heat and be able to dictate how the split “happens” ... more control, you can kinda steer the cut ... if that makes sense. If you don’t want to use electricity, there are inexpensive butane torches with attachments that would simulate the same effect. Thank you for watching and for commenting!

  • @gailraszewski445
    @gailraszewski445 2 года назад

    I wish I could send you a picture of the old style 1/2 gallon Almaden wine bottle filled with pennies and you could give me an idea as to where I could use your method successfully to cut a hole to get the coins out - the bottom, the side, around the circumference?

    • @fleanine
      @fleanine  2 года назад

      I searched the bottle you were talking about, and if the goal is only to get the coins out and you’re not concerned about a really accurate cut, you could probably carefully score it with a regular hand-held glass cutter - just make sure you get your seam to match up as close as you can on the other side once you go around. ( maybe use a piece of tape first to make sure you have a path to follow.) then once you get that set up you hit it with the soldering iron and take your time. Go slow. Be patient. If I were you I would go between the handle and the part where it starts to flare out. This way you’re making the least amount of cut, but you should still be able to get the coins out once you open up to the wider section .

    What happens if you cut glass like cutting tile with a watered circle saw for tile.?

    • @fleanine
      @fleanine  4 года назад +3

      MsPlastina1 i actually bought a wet tile saw to make this process easier. It’s hard to get a controlled cut without chipping because of the high speed blade/ the cut winds up kinda jagged and requires a lot more cleanup/smoothing. I ended up going back to this method because even though it’s a bit slower, it’s less time on cleanup and delivers a better end result. ( and it’s cheaper than a tile saw;) Thanks for watching and commenting!

    • @MsPlastina1
      @MsPlastina1 4 года назад

      Can you use a slower speed?

    • @fleanine
      @fleanine  4 года назад

      No, not with the models I was looking at/ ended up purchasing.
      ...even at slower speeds the blades are not “perfect” enough and would lead to chips on the edges and wet glass shards get all over things. I could perhaps make a video to illustrate what I’m talking about in the near future. I prefer the slow and steady approach. The time you “may” save not using the soldering iron you end up making more of a mess of the bottle and all the grinding and sanding down in the shop later gets debris everywhere - AND it doesn’t look as good. The less glass dust in the air the better. In the long run this ends up being faster and cleaner.

    • @MsPlastina1
      @MsPlastina1 4 года назад

      Ok i agree but arent there any blades that are even and made with diamond?

    • @fleanine

    I make wine bottle wind chimes and after I score my bottles, I boil a medium pot of water, with the water two inches deeper than my cut and also fill my sink with cold water and frozen coke and water bottles to get it freezing cold. Then I put bottle in hot water for about 30 seconds and then dip in sink of ice water and swirl for 30 seconds, and continue back and forth until bottom pops off, 95% clean cuts! Usually takes 3 rotations of hot/cold. Just be careful going from pot to sink and back because bottom can pop off any time it wants too! Hope this helps. (When I am finished, I make sure to pour water through a strainer in case any glass shards and put my water filled bottles back in the freezer)

      I have tried using a torch as you mentioned...and have shattered the bottles due to heat, so if you do it that way you REALLY have to be extra careful as to not over-heat one section too fast.
