Nothing better than randomly opening up RUclips and seeing that someone has uploaded a new old or old new Siskel & Ebert episode. Thank you for keeping the memory of these guys alive. I’m a huge Danny DeVito fan but Other People’s Money is one of his movies I haven’t seen. My grandfather had it on VHS and I never watched it smh
I just watched it on HBOMAX for the first time. I liked it. Danny DeVito is great in it. What surprised me was the drama toward the end. Gregory Peck is at the end of his rope and DeVito doesn’t back down. That was a bold move for a Hollywood movie to conclude. So I don’t know what they’re talking about when they call the ending soft. I guess because it shows hope for a relationship between DeVito and Penelope Ann Miller.
@@wowview2 well maybe it’s the final scene that they are talking about because he does make a deal with Penelope Ann Miller where he does sell the shares back to Gregory Peck but he gained something else in return.
Roger nails the review. The Ernest movies are not “good” movies, but when you’re a little kid they are very entertaining! I dug into Jim Verney’s history a few years back. Despite being a chain smoker he always spoke out against it, would never allow himself to be filmed smoking, and told kids never to smoke. Sadly, he died young of lung cancer :(
No idead Gregory Peck was in Other People's Money-need to watch that:)Just watched Martin Scorcese's Cape Fear re-make&Robert Mitchum,Gregory Peck,Martin Balsam, all make an appearance:)
That line about a nation of dropouts is holding up well. Attended a couple years of college recently and was shocked to see how the classes shrunk throughout the semesters. Lot of dropping out.
I just finished watching "Other People's Money" (thanks RUclips for making it free in Feb 2023) and I'm trying to find this "original ending" from Norman Jewison -- you know, the one that Roger said bombed with the test audiences for being "too depressing". It may have never made it to laserdisc, but is there any plot synopsis of this "original ending"? I'm even having a hard time to find it by Googling it.
Other People's Money (two thumbs up) Ernest Scared Stupid (two thumbs down way down) City of Hope (two thumbs up) Life is Sweet (two thumbs up) Opening Night (two thumbs up)
Not at all for a budget film it was successful no wonder the voice of trantor got a job at lucasarts for va works for the 3 prequels and the series of ernest films continued to be successful and still have major fanbase to this day they do a ernest camp. At camp kickakee every yr where hundreds of fans go to in Tennessee end of the day ernest scared stupid was bad badass
Other People's Money was a love story?! Penelope Ann Miller rejects Danny DeVito's character at every turn, but seems to reluctantly put up with his sexual harassment to make a business deal.

I saw Ernest Scared Stupid in the theater when I was 11. Maybe it’s nostalgia talking, but I still enjoy it, and other Ernest movies
Yeah, the way they gave the movie a hard time brings back memories of disagreeing with these two.
Same!!
My brother and I still use the MALK joke 😂
Other People's Money is such an underrated film
The Killing Of A Chinese Bookie & Husbands are excellent John Cassavete's films!!:)
I’ve been waiting so long for an Ernest review! Thanks!!!!
They were a bit hard on poor old Jim. Imho
@@clutchkman yeah they never give b tier budget films a chance the 2 were annoying and full of themselves
Other People’s Money is a great movie and is one of DeVito’s best performances. His “Amen” speech at the end is so memorable and relatable today.

Yeah one of these days I’d like to see the original intended ending, but was satisfied with the one provided. Didn’t seem out of place.

They were saying it was completely different than the theatrical release.
I *loved* Other People’s Money, still don’t know how we don’t have a Blu-ray release of it yet
Ernest Scared Stupid got me to start drinking milk as a kid.
It's good that they gave Cassavetes recognition.
Cool episode.
Yup:)

RIP Jim Varney
One of Leigh's best movies, one of Sayles' best and a re-release of one of Cassavetes' best; this was a pretty good week.
I love Alison Steadman! Both a John Sayles and a Mike Leigh film on the same episode. Wow!

Ernest movies were great for kids. They wouldn’t hold a kids attention for a second these days. But in the late 80’s and early 90’s I loved them.
those two ladies sounded almost like they were doing parodies of English accents.
City of Hope is a good movie.
ranking the best ernests: ernest scared stupid. ernest goes to camp. ernest goes to jail. ernest safes Christmas
The Ernest Scared Stupid review has to be the shortest review those two ever did. They couldn’t even muster up any real disdain.
That should tell you how uninterested they were in Ernest P. Worrell to begin with.
They just dont like comedy that's sad perhaps varney will teach Ebert comedy in heaven
Other People's Money (two thumbs up)
Ernest Scared Stupid (two thumbs down way down)
City of Hope (two thumbs up)
Life is Sweet (two thumbs up)
Opening Night (two thumbs up)
I was 8 when this came out and I loved it, I’m sorry but this movie wasn’t made for adults. 8 year olds loved it
ernest 1-4 are all good fun
In my opinion, you can't summarize Shadows. I honestly feel it's about everything.
he says they're likeable people based on his own opinion of what likeable people are.
To be fair, "Ernest Scared Stupid" WAS pretty bad!

They definitely form a bond as the film progresses.
siskel didn't like the killing of a chinese bookie. that explains him
I didn't like it either. IMO, the best Cassavetes movie is Love Streams.
Ernest scared stupid is awesome! The first critic looks like someone put a pair of glasses & a wig on a pile of rubber gloves.
