Hello there
lol not me, i prefer to OWN my books.
Honestly as a librarian I just think the book fair is not ethical. Worst of all the money didn't even go to my library from what I'm gathering at. It went to an organisation that used my space so they can have their book fair.
The scholastic fair made me know I was poor lmaooo

I remember getting some miniature pizza kit, it basically just had tiny cookie cutters to make the crust and tiny pepperoni…. I was so pumped about it but my mom was like wtf that money was for books
Tiny pizza > books
🤣🤣🤣
I’ve been running those book fairs since 2008 and some things have remained staples: the erasers that look like smart phones and the ones that look like Xbox controllers. Also, the “Spy” (uv light) pens are ever-popular as well as finger pointers, like primary classroom teachers use with reading charts, Word Walls and such. The only thing that changes about those things are the colors. For example, we are always given 4 different color variations of the uv light pens, usually black, white, and two others. The prices have remained pretty much the same until very recently.
I now have former students coming back as teachers. One asked about the “smelly” erasers. I had totally forgotten about them. They really smelled good. Oh, the chocolate calculators have always been around though. Their scent really lasts for a very long time!
And yeah, books. We do sell books.
What types of books are popular with elementary school kids these days?
@@luigi7834 Croc 2
Do they still have the mushroom eraser pencil sharpener combo?!
@@kylejarmolych5100 No. I had forgotten about those! They should make them again. Mushrooms are popular again.
@@luigi7834 Dog Man and Cat Kid Comic Club. If you don’t know what those are, they are the graphic novel spin-offs of Captain Underpants by Dav Pilkey. Those are the most popular. Oh, and Jory John is popular with the K-3 set. He has a series of picture books that are good for learning about emotions and attitudes and such without being preachy. The OG is called “The Bad Seed.” For chapter books, historical fiction / adventure books are popular, like the “I Survived” series by Lauren Tarshis. But mostly graphic novels are super popular. For girls, anything by Raina Telgemeier is popular.

Yes
Absolutely, those were the only things I ever bought.
Let's be honest, everyone wanted the invisible ink pens but the first classes that went in the morning always bought them all
I say this 100% genuinely, I used to be so goddamn sad as a kid that we were always too poor for me to get anything that I swore my kids would always get something. We're broke as fuck but they always get as much as I can spare because I've been the poor kid and I know how much it sucks
Sameeeeeee. We werent that poor but my mom NEVER gave me any money for school, not for the book fair or to buy snacks, and when the book fair came around I would always see my friends buy stuff and I was just standing there. Mind you, it hurts even more because I was a nerd. From 1st grade to 6th grade, my lunch periods consisted of going to the library and reading (more like devouring) a book every day. So you can imagine, the book fair with cool new books that I couldn't buy.
I swore to myself that if I had the disposable income and my kids liked reading, I would never do this to them. It was a HORRIBLE feeling.
I remember in the 1st grade I wanted to buy a captain underpants book but my parents said no so i just went under my couch and found 37 cents. I went to the book fair got the book and paid 37 cents for it. They gave me a 10 dollar book for 37 cents.
*S T O N K S*
Probably because it cost them 5 cents when they bought them in bulk.

Back then, the School Fair was like a carnival coming to town.
Funny that you say that because when ever the scholastic book fair happened one or two men wearing clown masks and other wired shit would arrive in a giant tricycle covered in weird shit, You would see them at local fairs very occasionally. they would ride around the school Neighborhood, park their trike at the front of the school and would drive off after a few days, about just under a week felt like a fair. the tricycle terrified the shit out of me as a kid, it had a fake Decapitated head on the front of it. the book fair was cool Though lots of good memories there with friends.
Yep. Our librarian would make everybody help set up and yell at us. The fair itself was full of shit. For us, it was like a carnival if we were the janitors.
It litteraly was we had rides and shit
That’s where I stole Scary Stories to Tell in The Dark
It definitely was 🤣
My mom bought a nocturnal animal book with pop-ups and a section of how to identify nocturnal animals by their footprints. It's one of my cherished memories.
I loved the smell of the books, popcorn, i loved the vivid colors, the games, puzzles, toys, and the excitement!
I call dibs on Sideways Stories from Wayside School and Goosebumps.
I stole one of those pens that retracted when you folded them in half in the fourth grade and some girl found out and tattled on me but the librarian was like "oh no I remember you paying for it, cause you did right?." That's the most guilt I've ever felt in my life and had she not been so gracious it probably would have been the start of a light criminal streak. That's why the first part of Les Miserables will always make me cry. Sometimes just giving somebody the silver will cost you nothing and will mean for them everything.
@Eric Kim I once stole a peppermint candy from the store and my older brother saw me and made me put it back. A few weeks later I stole his wallet to buy a peppermint candy.
I learned my lesson tho
You brought me back, I remember girls being just the scum of the earth in elementary school. They got joy out of telling on ya, they didn't like anything that was cool, and they acted like they were made of glass (break out crying from the lightest push). I think it mostly stopped after maybe 3rd or 4th grade, but before that they were basically unlikable, moving land mines.

At my school we had used book fairs. They weren’t scholastic. Like every Christmas people would donate books and then we could go around and buy beaten up books (they were never in good condition, it was like buying old public library books) for more money than a new one would cost! I don’t know if scholastic did book fairs here in Ireland, but if they did we didn’t get them.

On god bro
I know. Whenever a kid in my class would get one, we’d just take it and start writing bad words all over the place. Now looking back at it, it was pretty immature but still very fun
FRLLL
There was so much demand at my school that they literally had to make the kids sign a reserve paper and we got the pens a week after the book fair
literally
I remember in 2nd grade when the first Minecraft Hand book and the red stone handbook came out. I was the only kid in the whole school who had them. I felt like a king. People lined to read them. Then the combat handbook and the construction handbook came out, and I bought those too. I was a living legend. I was the coolest kid in school. I had all 4 Minecraft handbooks. Nothing could stop me. I still have them to this day.
I always loved the book fair and catalogs when I was in school.
When kids used to flex their minecraft handbooks and trade them on the playground, good times..
I dont mean to brag or anything but..... i got those minecraft handbooks 😎
@@featgoose972 pls can i have those im broke but i need those
GSGEGDV i would flex those books everytime i got them at the book fair
Oh my god, I remember those handbooks! I still got the Combat and Redstone handbooks, don’t know about the other ones though.

I guess Scholastic changed a little when I finished school! I don't remember all of those gadgets you're mentioning. I remember a handful of notebooks guiness books, and cheat codes, but it was definitely mostly legit books. I circled so many books and my mom would only let me buy books, so it was a win win for this nerd.
I remember a lotta of the Scholastic book fairs back in the 90's and early 00's the amount of school supplies, treats, toy and books they had lol.
God the cheat code books. The one thing I wanted from the fair until my child brain discovered the interwebs
Aleczarde I use to go eb games and look at the cheats in the book and memorise them till I got home ahah
I pretty much had a meltdown and felt like some god-prophet when I discovered cheat code central
@@PoliciaCaro foreal yo Cheat CC was the shit back then.
I wish I had the internet instead of buying that book, I eventually did, but I had already used pretty much every cheat code so CCC was virtually useless.
You don't know true power until you were the first one to print out a cheat sheet of GTA games and showed them at school
Scholastic Bookfairs may have been utterly random shit, but god-damn, don't tell me I'm the only one who always eagerly got the newest Captain Underpants/Diary of a Wimpy Kid book the moment the bookfair started every year.
had every mf book bro lmfao those were my shit
A. Diallo same
right here brother
When i first herd of that, i thought you say it like "diarrhea of wimpy kid" because i was in kindergarten or 1st grade and couldn't read
Same dude
It's so comforting to find so many other people that had basically the same exact childhood as me. Wait, why is that comforting?
Yes. I still have my book fair cheat code books from 2013 or whatever. Literally a prized posession.
Somemother in my class stole my Guinness world record 2011 gaming book I will even forget that kid
