  • You asked and we listened! After last week's Best Blades of 2024 video had so many comments asking why Wilson was left out, we decided to make things right and give them a test against three of the top blades from our last test. See how they stack up right now!

    Fun video. Wilson has a massive nostalgia factor for me as my dad (who was a very accomplished golfer) played them in his younger days. He also played the blade putter. But today, it's hard to find 1. Someone who plays blades and 2. Someone who plays Wilson blades. I think the price makes this an amazing value but will post again if I ever run into anyone actually playing these clubs.

    Wilson Golf as a whole is perplexing. I play regularly in different regions of US; home here in CO, vacation homes in MT and Lake Tahoe area, family in Seattle, Scottsdale and Houston areas. In none of those areas do I see Wilson anything. My son was playing Wilson Staff ball, which he really liked, last year and one of my buddies still breaks out a classic 8802 putter, otherwise nada.
    We spent 5 weeks in Australia last year, mostly in Melbourne, played several rounds at Royal Melbourne, 2 of the locals we were playing with played Wilson Staff blades. In 22 we were in UK, mostly Scotland as well as Belgium and Netherlands but our golfing was only in UK. There were same 8 of us in total for each round, 4 American’s, 2 from Northern Italy and 2 locals. One of the Italian’s and both of the locals played some kinds of Wilson irons.
    The conclusion I’ve come to, right or wrong, is that while Wilson Sporting Goods remains Chicago based, their US distribution is lacking or non-existent. Their international distribution is what is keeping them afloat. I’m curious if you can determine from the comments what % of these Wilson fanboys reside outside of North America. Based upon my experience, I’m betting it’s the majority. Does CC or formerly did TXG have a personal Wilson rep like the balance of oem’s?

    I game and love the old Wilson Pi5s and in search of a modern equivalent. The Pi5s have thin soles, little offset and traditional lofts, but have a thicker topline and an undercut cavity. Good balance for me. That's why I like seeing these videos. The Wilson CBs or dynapower forged are interesting to me, but their blades look sexy.

    I have these Wilson staff blades and they are just pure joy to hit and work the ball with coupled along with easy hitting iron and at a much lower price point than the other name brands, it goes to show that you don’t have to have the biggest and best branded clubs to have something exceptional

    Great video guys. The seeming reluctance to do this was funny. I'm old enough to remember when it seemed like half of the guys on tour were carrying Wilson Staff bags. Great video. Last year when I was looking for new irons, I hit a lot of different blades. I was surprised that the Wilson blades felt better to me than the Miura MB 101's. However, at the end of the day, the best club for me was the Miura MC 502. I absolutely love the the 502's. My early vote is to have the MC 502's in your player's cavity test. Thanks for this video. By the way, Ian's swing looks like it is made to play blades. Swing looked real nice today.

Bought Titleist mb/cb combo last summer to update and reduce shaft weight (fitted into Project X io 6.5), In the back of my mind I regret not waiting for the new Model blades but having never played anything but WS irons, I felt I ought to change (my fitter also said the tolerances were tighter on the Titleist irons). Can't knock the Titeist 620's but still love the buttery feel of my WS blades.

    I commented - and yes I game Wilson irons. Cannot get the v6 out of my bag. But the grooves are fairly flogged now so these Wilson blades are more then likely what I’ll go possibly with a combo set with the Wilson cb in the 3/4/5 irons. Forget price, they perform on par (or better imo) than the big brands. Now because they’re so much cheaper I don’t understand why I don’t see almost everybody playing them. That said here in Aus I know heaps of people that game wilson irons. I’ve personally converted two of my mates to Wilson.

    Lol 😂, well done boys. Iain, I have used my MacGregor Muirfield 20th since 1988, yes they feel part of me by now. They, like me, are getting worn. They were made from 1020 Japanese steel back in the day, Don White told me himself. Without spending £4500 on importing custom made irons, which modern blades are made from this quality of steel. I have hit modern blades made from cheaper alloys and they feel firm. Muira obviously make their blade from 1020 but anything else to compete with that level of craftsmanship and QC? I don't feel the same about the modern blades you chose, but that's the subjective nature of golf. Furthermore, the sharp high toe I have always loved seems to be rounded and bevelled these days. Any thoughts?

    Weirdness alert. Slide to 7:10, focus on the impact positions, and note that Ian prefers the FEEL of hitting the Wilson thin, and I mean 2 grooves below the sweet spot. How damning! I want to reserve the occasional deliberate thin hit for getting 5 extra yards. Per what Mike and Ian are showing us, with the Wilson Blade, ultimate golf satisfaction is found in thinning it perpetually. For me, the jury is out on my Wilson Reflex RFX irons, since I've never hit the sweet spot, ever. And the club is not to blame. Good job, boys.

    Apex head weight tech is game changer for me, getting LA Golf shafts or Axioms to the correct SW has been a pain until I got Apex’s

    • @MichaelM-to4sg
      @MichaelM-to4sg 7 дней назад

      What’s unique about Apex MB mass? It’s still a 1-piece carbon steel forging so it should be similar mass to most blades. The modern hollowbody and cb designs get very light, often 8-10g lighter than ‘traditional’ 265g 6-iron in all brands except Miura.
      I also don’t see how LA Golf or Axioms help swingweight since neither are counterbalance designs and are similar in mass to traditional steel at 125g apiece. Axiom does have a 105g version but do do many steel offerings. The big advantage of composite shafts is the vibration damping and feel, not really weight unless you want crazy low mass which I do not believe Axiom or LAG offer.
      Unless you’re planning a significant over length iron, low mass heads are not needed for tuning swingweight and even then, Callaway is not unique as long as you want CB’s or hollowbody heads. More swingweight tuning can be accomplished with grips than with heads. There are grips available from 70g in std OD. Between grips and a touch of lead tape, it’s easy to dial in exact swingweight w/o swapping heads.
