The game of Basketball has been my passion since I was 5 years old. I grew up as a kid watching my dad's recorded VHS tapes of playoff games through the 70s and 80s, and collected all the Basketball cards. Something about the game and what it represents just hooked me from a very young age.
My love for the game only continues to grow as time goes on. I love studying and analyzing the game, with an unbiased perspective. Feel free to subscribe, follow me on social media, and celebrate this amazing game and it's rich history with me!
I post videos every week on NBA history, predictions, hypothetical scenarios and current NBA topics.

Just to piggyback on what a lot of other comments have said, I love and appreciate your Chanel and it’s content because you find new ways to keep your content fresh and interesting. Especially when there are so many basketball channels flooding RUclips. Love and respect the work. Thank you
Johnny your knowledge and videos have allowed me to develop a love for the game I never had before, and the intro beat is 🔥🔥
I grew up watching basketball in the 50's and i hated the 60's-90's era and thought it was trash compared to 50's ball but looking back on it now, that was the best version of the nba ive ever seen in my 84 years. Them guys magic and bird and then Jordan were amazing.
I respect all eras. I actually made a league of the 50s-60s on NBA 2K the video game. Bob Cousy, Paul Arizin, Bob Pettit, George Mikan, and even George Yardley are in there. I'm 25, but love the history of the game.
@@dmpdagamerwell that’s great to hear! I bet them nba 2000 video games you guys are making really can encapsulate the style of the league back then. Them boys couldn’t even take a full step without dribbling and had to basically slap the ball to the ground and back as a dribble. It was much tougher enforcement of rules then also.
I seen some of the highlights from the game today and that Jae Rule or Ja Romant (whatever his name is, im old) guy can really get up there but he doesn’t have to dribble when gathering his steps. He’s still amazing tho. My great grandson loves watching him.
Young Jordan would destroy him in one on one. I guarantee you that.
I believe in 20 years they will go ahead and get rid of dribbling all together if Howard stern is still the commissioner. Hopefully Jae Troman is still playing and trying to catch up to lebron. Lebron might be coming off the bench by then.
I’m just joshing you young man.
Laugh O Loud😊
@@MJIZZEL yea it's hard to make them play exactly like they use to, but it's definitely fun seeing the original guys on the court.
Wow you are a real OG basketball fan
I'm 14, I love history and I have wilt #1 on my all time list. Following my Bill Russell then Kareem and LeBron tied for 3rd

Congrats on 185k!!! Ive watched all your videos now so keep doing what you do because its genuinely so entertaining
Love how relaxing these long videos are. Keep it up Johnny
Very glad I was recommended this video and channel - keep up the good work
Amen Thompson reminds me a lot of Magic. Very tall, super quick, fast-thinking, great passer point guard who is always looking to push the ball and run when he gets it. He can also double as a forward and catch just about anything in the dunker's spot, and also is amazing on the defensive end. His BBIQ combined with his quick-twitch abilities are phenomenal for someone so young. He just needs to develop a consistent (not even good) shot and learn when to slow down so he cuts back on turnovers, and he'll be a perennial all star
I love falling asleep to basketball facts!!! Thank you, Jonny.
Hell yeah!!! day saver...thank you mr.arnett for your work❤
Dude, your hard work, love for the game and dedication is quite incredible. You've got a yourself a new sub.
I been watching NBA since mid 80s and this is a pretty objective breakdown. Obviously its difficult to not be biased toward the era and the players one first gets exposed to but this is a pretty good summary.
I agree with you that the 2000s were the greatest basketball. It had the perfect mixture of offense and defense. It was a kind of razzle dazzle but still tough. Now it's just razzle dazzle. Just sucks I wasn't watching it as much then.
You should do a video called “if NBL stats counted” similar to the if ABA stats counted video. I think this would be cool because the NBA does recognise BAA before the NBL merger even though talent was split between the two leagues and the NBL would later join the NBA. I also think it would be cool because a lot of people including me doesn’t know much about the NBL so it would contain a lot of new info that could be interesting. It would also further show the dominance of George Mikan and it would change the championship total of the Lakers meaning they would have one more ring than the Celtics which as a Lakers fan this is one of my favourite parts of this scenario lol. Just an idea though great vid.
21:30 There was no greater flipper than “Floppy” Divac.. The GOAT of flopping! 😂
When you talk about Facilitators w/eyes in the back of his their head, White Chocolate was dropin' dimes too. In the late 90's MJ had all the kids on the courts wanting to be "like Mike" and ball hog to try to make crazy/off balance shots. J-Will made passing cool again and every one was wanting to make crazy passes.
For every younger basketball fan finding your channel there will be one kid less spewing uneducated takes on tiktok...well maybe not for every, but I like to think positive.
I have learned so much basketball from this channel thank you Jonny!! I didn’t know majority of this stuff
Very good documentary! I think I speak for everyone on the comments when I say we all appreciate the hard work involved in putting this massive project together! THANK YOU, SIR! 🙏
This is a fantastic summary - a highlight of events that shaped and changed the game. I can't say I agree with all of your opinions, but your facts are solid and i appreciate all the work, clips included in this video. Thank you!
Definitely intrigued by this... 👀 🍿 Thank you Jonnyarnett 👍🏾
You have such a classy context
I remember watching that all star game when magic came back with my pops man what a time to be alive
you basketball fans need to become more educated on “Dobber” Bob Lanier. the most underrated and underappreciated player ever. 6’11, 250 pounds. he could score, rebound, and pass. i loved his jump shot. he should’ve been on the Top 50 list. he damn sure should’ve been on Top 75. he may not have any all NBA selections but it’s understandable when there were only 2 spots at the time and youre fighting for the second team because Kareem is occupying the first team. a Pistons legend. a Bucks legend. no one talks about this dude and that’s a problem.
This is a history class I can get behind
i often wonder why the NBA doesn’t count the NBL or the ABA accomplishments in their history books. the NFL recognizes the AFL and AAFC. the NBA prides itself on cherishing basketball history yet refuses to acknowledge two professional leagues that helped shape what it is today (same goes for the NHL barely recognizing the WHA accomplishments)…..weird.
Probably because they don't have the rights to those players merch or something to do with money. If they recognize those leagues but there are players whose likeness and name they don't have the rights to use now all the sudden they are using their resources to make someone else's pockets fat without getting a piece lol. Also, it would change the all-time lists, and some of the more popular players wouldn't be near the top anymore, lol
Prior to the 2001 season, the NBA had an illegal defense rule that didn’t allow centers to camp under the basket and guard the rim unless there was an offensive player near the basket on either side of the block. The defensive players who protected the rim were near the paint because they were close to under the basket. The defensive three second rule as we now know it is in place because the NBA now allows a type of zone defense that wasn’t permitted under the older illegal defense rules.
The illegal defensive rule also indicated that a team couldn’t have players guard an area where there wasn’t an offensive player.
@@JDDoug6930 You do know teams today don't even run a zone defense it is ran 2 to 4 % of all NBA games... Why they don't run it because if you played ball for your school, they taught you how to beat a zone in 8th grade and pro ball players have no problem breaking down a zone. You can't compare today's defense to 90s era it isn't even close to how lopsided today's game is offensively. That is why VP for NBA Joe Dumars and Adam Silver are saying they made a mistake with the defensive rules and changes are coming
I like your content..
Based on stats..
I like this article. It gives insight to American history as well …Ancient history that brought it to about.
The creator almost got it right about the 80's was harder. The players back in the 80's didn't grow up with 3 pointer. So seeing front line players didn't make plays more then 15 feet from the basket. In half court game the play starts with in the 3 point line. So you had a more compact area of play. The defense didn't have to move as far to cover. It was all man to man defense no zone like they do today. When you see a defender next to the paint and ignoring the offensive players stand behind the 3 point line that would have been a defensive violation. You have to be no farther then one zone defending a player. LBJ being holding the all time score leader with a 3 point era. When Kareem didn't ever shoot a shot farther then 15 feet 1 and 2 points at a time. LBJ would take 3 to 5 more years to do without the 3 pointer. That is how different the game was. I played when college transition to the 3 pointer. When I would go to the rec center to practice 3 pointers. The players in the gym were amazed I was hitting 20% on a 3 pointer. Very few people in a pickup game would shoot a 3 pointer. Now people start behind the 3 point line not at the top of the key. With fast break and and most shot are closer to the rim. You are going to be more efficient.
That is exactly why I believe the 70s are the NBA's true Golden Era. The variability year to year, and the depth of competition.
Every new era is the golden era
@@noobmaster-wg4no I respectfully disagree. I think this era has gotten hijacked.
There has not been a repeat champion since 2019, this modern era has very deep and varied contenders throughout
@@troliskimosko The Warriors dynasty did seep into the 2020s [2021], but that is a very fair point. Honestly just not a fan of the team hopping our stars have been doing since LeBron's Decision.

I knew you would eventually do a video on the cagers. I always laughed when my dad talked about the bad boy pistons. Ive always been a fan of history, and my love of basketball has interwined with it. Learning about the game, imagine my astonishment at 8 years old when I read Bill Russell had literally more rings than fingers. Going back even further I read about the cagers and found it fascinating. I know ur a laker fan bro, and y'all are generally amongst the most..boisterous(read; insufferable lol) but u manage to remain almost completely objective in ur assessments, and in this day and age of instant gratification(look at how theyre talking about anthony edwards for having 5 good playoff games lol) ur viewpoints are fair handed and even. Ur the best bro.

Footnote: LeBron came back from 3-1 because of The Draymond Green Suspension... Also Kyrie Irving did the heavy lifting
Gotta do one on Lloyd Banks he mixtape material is 2nd to none, album quality ready. Probably the most underrated slept on artist in the game with countless classic mixtapes
I am a heterosexual African American man. 😂😂Angel Reese plays for my hometown Chicago Sky so, I am definitely supporting her. My Chicago Sky beat the Dallas Wings yesterday and Angel played well. Caitlin Clark is a very good basketball player. Unfortunately the number 1 overall pick 99% of the time goes to the team that needs the most help. Caitlin Clark is improving every game. She will be just fine. I am a big time Big Ten fan. I enjoyed see g Caitlin Clark hold it down for the Big Ten Conference. I want all of these young ladies in wnba to play well. My Chicago Sky is 2 - 1 and one of their 1st round picks has not even played yet due to a shoulder injury. My Chicago Sky has a tuff schedule ahead. Let's go Sky!
...So, why did you feel like you needed to tell everyone that you're a heterosexual man again?
00’ was the best era !! Like u said best of both worlds
There’s 16 yo’s doin 360 windmills at damn near every high school in America people are just getting more athletic in general.
Needed something to play in the background whilst I paint the house, thank you Jonny hot socks
this dude didnt mention how dennis rodman was a master consistent flopper ????
Explain please
Magic OK, Kobe OK, but Curry? A one-trick poney, an excellent one, but still a one-trick poney!
in the 90s you COULDNT camp under the basket in the NBA. You had to be within arms distance of your man or you would get called for illegal defense. Which in my opinion makes it eaiser to score but you could argue hand checking leveled the feild
Amazing video
Appreciate the hard work🫡
I really believe the 2000s era was the perfect evolution of the '80s and '90s style of basketball. In my personal opinion, the game has regressed ever since the 2010s. I know that's not a popular take but I really don't care... LOL
I agree with that take. The 2010s have showcased unchecked offense with average scores in the 115+ range, multiple 40-70 point solo performances, of course the all time scoring record gets broken during this era.
I do have a lot of hope for the new generation of talent, teams, and coaches. I think this season truly marks the changing of the guard.
Have u seen how much the players in the 60’s missed??? It’s no wonder there is a rebound record back then!
A video on Magics comeback season could be interesting. Ive never heard you mention it even once and you keep talking about "Magics last season" and "Magica last game." But Magic played a whole season at a decent level in 96. My first basketball memory is the 95 playoffs. Lakers beat Sonics, Spurs beat Lakers, Rockets beat Spurs and Magic. My second is Magica comeback. It was a big deal at the time.
Kobe Bryant might be top 5 in terms of taking over a game when he's on, but he's a pretty terrible shooter even in games he takes over.
Just compare his fg% in 50+ point games to the other players with at least 9 50+...
Kobe: 50+ 25x, >50% in 8, 50% in 30 50% in 17, 50% in 13, 50% in 9, 50% in all 14
Barry: 14 times, >50% in 10, 50% in all 13
Iverson: 11 times, >50% in 10, 50% in all 10
KD: 9 times, >50% in 7,
❤❤❤💯
Lesson appreciated! Edit: Peeped Phil Jackson in some of the Knicks shots.
"They used to shoot each other with guns but this era could still be considered soft compared to the decades befor it"
That was the ball-is-a-hand-grenade era
شكرا جزيلا على الفيديو! 🇪🇬
I DONT blame Portland for that ....
Why would draft Mike... When you already had Clyde Drexler ?? That makes no sense...
They had the right frame of mind looking for a Big man... That wasnt Portland's fault.... Sam was not durable
25:08 We’re really out here having Rui Hachimura shootin technical fouls now?😂
My go to signature move for a sure score was the Kevin McHale move.
shaq was fat, old , past prime & injured when he joined lebron on the cavs
Totally off on Dan Majerle, he was known as a good three point shooter but was known as Thunder Dan for a reason , he could dunk early on & was athletic. He wasn’t close to the only one however. Dale Ellis , Rauf , Glen Rice , Chuck Person & others come to mind.
TAKE EM TO SCHOOL JOA!

If I had one wish, it would be to see LeBron James try and flop his way through a game under 1890's Hell in a Cell rules.

26:37 as a dad I like this subject
Born in '93 and i miss my sonics.. but thats neither here nor there. Just chiming in to say, i also agree that the 2000s was FIRE for the NBA. I miss those days.
I love basketball 🏀🌟🍾🐐
Ah, the NBA in the 70s and 80s...like hockey only much rougher.
The 1970s were heavy.
The Knicks made a mistake by not signing Kareem
Wemby should be the first non-playoff player to win it
The NBA is not going to do anything about flopping. Too many of their superstars do it - they let LeBron get away with it for so long and he's so egregious about it that they don't want to risk him retiring over it in order to protect his legacy. On top of which, they love the other guys' (Embiid, SGA, Brunson, etc.) inflated box scores - scoring "always" draws more people in to watch
❤❤
And one could say the centers like Chet are centers with a small forward body
Chet would average micheal jordan numbers in the 80s tho
It’s nothing but love to all tha greats of tha game before my times I see how tha game has changed right in front of our eyes I’m telling them now a four pointer coming to tha game 😅but my answers is Kobe my bad I got off track for a second
12:56 should have mentioned that the celtics were held back due to John Havlicek getting hurt in the ECF against the Knicks
Born and raised in Portland Oregon and this made me sad. Most cursed for sure.
Sad

Happy Friday!!!
Oh wow, I just remembered that there was an era when basketball players were called cagers. Now I know why.
Sorry to correct you ...but Karl Malone did not say this before the allstar game..this was when Magic tried to come back for the 1993 season when Malone commented..forcing Magic to retire early in the season....And Magic did play in the 1996 season and lost to Houston in the first round. Someone didn't do their homework

I still don't undersand how dude is alive
2:30:20 that’s because he had to put up the teams offense as well 🤷🏾♂️
Old school game reminds me of Rugball (rugby/basketball) hybrid they play in Russia
You are wrong about the centers in the key all the time in the 90`s basketball games. During the 90`s there was a rule od Illegal Defense for zone. In the NBA you had to play man to man defense. If your man was out in the 3 pt area you had to cover him instead of guarding the paint. 1st offense was a warning any other violations afterward resulted in a technical foul shot and the ball. Many times offenses would have there big center out on the 3pt line to draw this penalty. This changed when zone defenses were allowed and to make sure the big men can`t crowd the paint the Illegal defenses changed to what it is now.
I got to see in person Kobe hit one of his game winners. Versus Charlotte in 2001
If pippen had won 2000 championship he’d have Robert horry status. And would have something Mj don’t
The scrub king
I love flopping. James Harden is playing hard. Flopping shows you want to win.
Tell your kid about the art
Love how he used jj Reddick as an example for unathletic people LeBron played and now he's already a coach
Happy Wednesday!
I’m 70 years old and grew up playing and watching nba BB. With RUclips I’ve watched a lot of old-fashioned games, especially Bill Russell and his Celtics. I’ve stayed a Celtics fan, especially with Larry Bird, Magic, Kareem and the MJ. For the past decade I have stopped watching the nba because of the many negative things that LeBrain has introduced to the nba; whining, complaining, flopping, traveling, palming the ball, charging, and changing teams like a “dirty shirt” in search of nba titles to polish his impossible quest for the fake goat title! What a total mess. Hopefully he will retire soon and maybe the nba will return to a watchable entity?
2:31:45 what tf would this have to do with defense? This aspect was on ball defense not off ball. The goal of defense is not letting your man get around u.
