This trade also sets up a huge playoff series between Lakers and Mavs which will likely take place at the Western Conference finals
Classic USA, everything is about money. The Lakers are much bigger compared to the Mavericks, so ofc they made this trade to make more money and so on. US sport in general is just garbage. Its not that deep. Patrick Dupont and the Adelson family want a casino stadium, but Texas wont let them. So theyre going to tank the team and drive away fans until they can move the team to Las Vegas. Then the NBA will step in and say Dallas is a top 4 major market and needs a team, and theyre going to give Dallas the first expansion team. Everyone wins except for Luka and Mavericks fans.

As someone who worked in the league for over 10 years, I am no longer a fan of teams, I'm a fan of players. So many people don't understand that, but after knowing how everything works from the inside, I'm just a fan of players and coaches. Think about it, what business can profit millions sometimes billions with a losing product. Teams bank on the fact that you're "loyal" to take your money but they aren't loyal to the fans or the players. They will move cities if needed, they will trade players without caring what the fans think or want.

This explains a headline from today: Mavs to Refund Season Ticket Costs to Unhappy Fans. Yup, it looks very much like a strategy from the Adelson family. And it makes a mockery of Mavs basketball until they move to Vegas.
Is this because there’s more money to be made from tourist fans who may watch a game and buy some merch so per seat they are making more money per game than a season ticket holder?

The only conspiracy theory that remotely makes sense is that the NBA approached the Mavs and conspired to trade Luka to the Lakers to generate interest and TV ratings. In exchange for doing this, the Mavericks would still get Anthony Davis and remain potential contenders in the present, but the NBA also guaranteed the Mavericks that they would rig the draft lottery for them sometime in the next say 6-10 seasons and they would be gifted another generational prospect, much like they've gifted the Spurs and Knicks in the past. If it was a conspiracy to generate interest, it sure worked, as this trade stole the majority of the headlines for the entire week leading up to the Super Bowl!
In the end, though... I really do think it was just Nico Harrison going rogue. The ownership gave him the full power to do what he wants, and so he's bringing in the guys with whom he already had a friendship. I totally see his vision, if he could've gotten AD for Kyrie... but I don't think they can run the gaunlet of the playoffs without Luka.

The people who own the Mavericks are worth $30 Billion, they're not worried about the extra hundred Million to pay Luka. Paying a supermax is just the natural cost of owning an NBA team. At the rate that NBA teams increase in value, paying that contract is really just the upkeep on your investment.

if you guys don't agree with this trade, the best thing we can do is NOT watch any random NBA games that the team you support isn't on. If you're a heats fan, don't watch any game that doesn't have the heats playing. If you're a celtics fan, don't watch any game that doesn't have the celtics playing in. There is nothing in it for the Mavericks team they've built (around the star player they just traded), and it DEFINITELY doesn't do anything for the fan base.
