People have no idea how terrifying it can be surfing a huge beach break like that!

If he was able to paddle out on a big day at OB he was an experienced surfer.

I fell in a close out tube there in 1996 and was spun 4-5 times under the water, completely disoriented and didn't know which way was up until I found my leash and pulled myself to the surface almost out of breath before another wave crashed on me). I bodyboarded the next to shore, and was shaking for 10 min for how close it was. I never went back out there. Its way more powerful than it looks even on a medium day.

This is the only place in the world that I surf and still get butterflies in my stomach even at 3-4 feet. The only other place is Nazare Portugal.

Surfers looking out for each other?? My leash broke at Noriega a few weeks ago on a medium-large, nearly double overhead day. One surfer paddled up to me and asked if I was OK to swim in. That was very cool. *But*, I was caught in a rip so had to swim horizontal to the beach and was out past the break so no waves to help me in. Long story short, it took me at least 20 mins to swim in and by that time I had drifted way down the beach.
Main reason for this post: I watched later on the surf cam as lots of people, including surfers simply walked past my board, washed up with a stub of leash hanging off. One surfer took a brief look out at the surf then walked on. There was no way anyone could have seen me swimming since it was all white water looking out and I'd drifted quite a way down from where my board washed up. WTF?? You see a washed up board and no surfer and you just walk on by without concern??
Now I probably would have been embarrassed had the calvary been called but in that situation I think you *have* to determine where the person swimming in is and monitor them. And if you can't, you call beach patrol.

Same thing happened to me at a good size day at the smaller Ocean Beach in San Diego except the guy on the beach was looking for someone in the water and he saw me swimming to shore. It was 5 to 8 foot day so biggest sets were 3 ft overhead but glad someone was concerned

Surfing at th spot is as scary as big sunset beach Hawaii, since there are no safe zones or channel to punch thru the close outs, not to mention the ice cold waters...

I lived there for 2 yrs. One day I forgot my leash and caught 5 waves. As I was walking back north on the beach a guy looked at me funny with no leash. That look told me to not paddle back even though the waves were only shoulder high.

lol i dislocated my arm surfing double overhead on the right coast back in september. had to drift a half mile down the jetty to reach a beach. Boy it was painful, and it could've been much scarier had my leash not held up.

Should probably just close it down if somebody could die. But if you must go out there we must mandate shark cages for surfers because there are sharks then we need to mandate life jackets and supplemental air supply. One life lost is to many. Also there should be fines and up to incarceration for people who don’t follow the rules. Remember it’s not about you . There also is a chance that people watching people surf also could die from something so they should probably be fined or incarcerated as well for leaving the house for non essential activities
