Record number of sea lions have crashed on San Francisco's Pier 39, the most counted in 15 years

- They're lounging, biting each other and generally making a ruckus in numbers not seen in more than a decade.
San Francisco's famed Fisherman's Wharf district is seeing a surge in sea lions.
First appearing at Pier 39 after the 1989 earthquake, the sea lions have become a well known tourist attraction.
The number of sea lions crashing at the pier fluctuates over the seasons. On most days more than a hundred can be seen.
But this week, Pier 39 has counted more than one thousand sea lions, the most they've seen there in 15 years.
The barges the sea lions lounge on are designed to hold significant weight. But officials admit this current surge is testing their limits.
Biologists believe an unusually high number of anchovies in the Bay have attracted extra sea lions this Spring.
The spike in sea lions is only expected to be temporary as they're just making a pit stop in San Francisco, refueling for food, as they travel to Southern California's channel islands for mating season.
Shops and businesses around the area are hoping the sea lion surge will also result in a tourist shopping spree, attracting more visitors to the area.

When I was a little girl in the 80s my father was a chef at Alioto’s just by these docks. They used to give me fish heads to feed the few seal lions that would come and go. After my family and I moved away, I saw on the news that they had started to crowd the area. I felt so guilty! Lol 😅
Now there’s a thousand of them and they’re looking for YOU to feed them the fish their ancestors kept talking about. 😊

Their big hangout in those days was seal rock by the Cliff House. Then after the World Series earthquake they moved to pier 39. Seagulls took over seal rock. Then about 15-20 years ago the pelicans took over seal rock from the seagulls. Now there's all kinds of pelicans flying over the Sunset. There haven't been this many pelicans in San Francisco since Alcatraz was their island.

I used to volunteer at a sea lion rescue/rehab/release down south. I like to think some of these babies are the babies of the ones I helped years ago, as the populations are recovering now. Hallelujah.

The marine mammal protection act has resulted in way too many sea lions. To the detriment of other species.

And, before the Americas were colonized, who "regulated" the salmon runs and the marine mammals populations? Now, the water is not ony warmer, but former gravel beds have become dominated by sand and mud as a result of increased landscape erosion.
That's about double the number of them I saw right there many years ago.

On a tour boat in san diego the guide said the sea lions would sleep on the bouys, to avoid being shark food. Does SFO have sharks?

Great White sharks breed out by the Farallon Islands twenty- five miles due west of the Golden Gate.
The Farallone Islands about 30 miles West of the GG Bridge is a breeding ground for Great Whites,and they're huge,some between 15-20ft..The island is also a great white shark science and information gathering spot

@SuperStoner86 don't blame the sea lions. That smell is from the people crapping and pissing in SF.
There were platforms similar to this in Crescent City, CA that were wiped out when the sunami wrecked the city after Fukashima disaster. The sea lions were back on the pier, and beaches for a while, but as long as you leave them alone, you won't get hurt.
On large rocky island outcrops on the North Coast, even the Stellars sea lions were making a comeback. They are gigantic, and you can hear them from the road above, and at night, from miles away. Pullouts are great for watching them enjoying themselves, and occasionally battling to show off to the females. When one big fatty starts crawling over mothers with pups, they really get stirred up!

One year I watched as two BIG sea lions battled for control of their own wooden float.
The crowd cheered when one was finally knocked into the water.
Good for a comment , gets right to the numbers , the reasons why and even the motive . And they counted them for years . I guess I just miss old fashion news delivery.
There was concern that the docks were becoming dangerous but when everyone realized that the best part of Fisherman's Wharf for the tourists was the sealions then additional docks were brought in.
There’s plenty more all up the rivers. All the way up the feather river too

It’s good to see the numbers coming back up after the massive die offs after Fukushima when the parents were forced to abandon their pups on the Channel Islands to chase bait fish farther south off of Mexico and Central America. They were saying over 40k dead sea lion pups total on the Channel Islands. It was bad
I would take the ferry from Vallejo to SF just to see them. There are seats to view them. Worth it !!!!!

At last! A positive news from the area compared to unending negative news of homelessness, crime, robbery, shoplifting,store closing, drugs..
No matter what you think of the current SF urban landscape the crown jewel of the city is the water, both ocean and bay.

There's one in Charleston Oregon that stays year round never leaves been there for years. Bullies any animal he's massive. The fishermen feed him daily

This is random and unrelated, but two years ago my friend and I were on that pier watching the sea lions. My friend was eating a churro, and out of nowhere a seagull flies right in front of us and takes a big bite out of my friend’s churro 😂 we were so startled that she ended dropping the remaining churro. This guy that was recording the sea lions, ended up catching the whole thing on film. Just wanted to share that. We had a good laugh after.
The media would complain about these guys just like they concocted a story about the crime and homeless crisis.

Yes, unfortunately the water is boiling because of global warming. You can see the steam rising out of the water! It's over 200° F.

Those very natural man made docks in a marina eating human farmed fish.
Mans life depends on interfering w/nature.
The massive protected areas particularly in Southern California near Imperial Beach and north along the coast have created an explosion of wild life. These Parks prevent fishing and it has worked. Massive migrations of squids, even Humboldt Squids, Great Whites, every fish from anchovies to Tuna and Marlin. The Seals are prospering and they also avoid sonar.

Hey, did you see what Seattle is doing? AND it's WORKING! They have someone dressed as a Killer Whale walking the piers. The minute the sea lions see the costumed Killer Whale, they slide off the pier and find somewhere else. Maybe it would work for San Fransisco?
We don’t want them to go away. That area was built just for them. They are fun to watch and don’t cause any trouble.
