  • Welcome back to Overland DIY, were we help you make your vehicle more off-road capable! In this video my buddy Chris and I install a Prinsu Roof Rack (or Cab Rack) on a 2016 Chevrolet Colorado Z71. The process was pretty straight forward... the only tricky part of the installation is that you have to drill holes to mount the rack. Some vehicles don't require this since they have factory mounting points.
    ABOUT THE HOLE... yes I suck. Learn from my mistake. Using a step bit/unibit makes controlling your depth easier, then finishing with the correct size standard bit: amzn.to/34LExB7 (paid link).

    I was thinking that the headliner was in danger. Live and learn. Thanks for the video. Nice rack.

      Yeah. I felt terrible. I honestly debated not including that in the video, but I wanted to be real... and warn people to be careful. Using a unibit to drill most of the holes makes it much safer... then finishing with a regular bit.

      Jason Explains Things I’ve been there quite a few times myself, just never on film. It’s part of modifying any vehicle. It happens to everyone eventually.

      @@JasonExplainsThings As you were drilling I was thinking to myself "I wonder what's between the roof shell and the headliner" ... I'm glad you kept the mistake in the video, it's always best to learn from others mistakes!

    It’s 1 am and I’ve been at it since 9 this morning. Ran into some drill bit problems (took up around 5 hours and many drill bits) but thanks to your video it went super quick after we found the step bit! Instructions were super helpful!!! Thanks much. Earned a sub.

      My step bit wouldn’t get through at 3/8 mark and I bought the best one Lowe’s had. What a pain

      Lamar DeBo Im pretty sure it has to be a carbide bit. Only one that really worked for me!

      KermitTheUhFrog got it done. Has to be the thickest roof ever created!

      Lamar DeBo 100. Those holes at the front are super tough. But, that carbide bit ate through everything! Did you get it done?!

    Thanks for the video. After watching the install will probably dish out the cash and take it to a body shop if I go with this rack. Have them drop the headliner, spray the drip rail, seal, corrosion protection. Thats going to up the cost for sure...... Like a roof rack for lightweight stuff such as traction board, shovel, and awning. Not doing a bed rack or RTT.

      No harm in going that route. I still haven't lived down my incident yet... nor should I! :-)

    About to do a custom rack install on a buddy's 1500. He provided an old rack and I fabbed some aluminum rails to rivnut into the drip rail and then bolt the rack to so it can be removed easily if he wants. Will post a couple photos on my Instagram account. Thanks for the vid. Was already planning on using a step bit, but was nice to know the sheet metal might be thicker in some spots than others. I think some Chevys use harder steel and I foresee drilling and waterproofing to be the biggest challenges.

      Just be careful and take your time. The unibit was a good idea and then just finishing the hole with a drill bit.

      I'd ask Prinsu for recommended installers. It wasn't too hard once we got our procedure down to drill the holes... but I get it. Drilling holes in your truck is scary.

    Did you get the roof rack with the 40inch light bar option? Or the one with the standard option? & what is the difference if you know?

    • @JasonExplainsThings
      @JasonExplainsThings  4 года назад +1

      No light bar. Chris already has off road lights and didn't want more. Difference is there's a cutout for the light bar if you choose that option.

    I recently bought a 2021 GMC Canyon AT4 and i cannot find alot of overlander builds with my truck. I assume if this rack fits on the colorado then it will fit on the GMC aswell. Do yall happen to know if this is true?
    I dont want to spend $700 + if it does not.

    • @PNW_Bison
      @PNW_Bison 4 года назад +2

      I agree it is a little loose, but after a few thousand miles installed, and no wind noise and no evidence of it getting looser, I don't think I'll address it. I had been planning on running a bead of silicone under it to keep it in place.

    • @PNW_Bison
      @PNW_Bison 4 года назад

      Depends on how well you seal it! 😉 But seriously, I don't. Mainly because of the liability waivers on most automatic car washes regarding aftermarket parts. Also, all the stuff on the rack that I have.

      It's really is a great rack, and I'm one of those weirdos that already liked to hand wash my truck anyway. If you don't feel up to it, there may be a local shop near you that could install? I was very nervous myself, but ended up happy I did it. GLHF!

      🐔 ...just kidding. I don't blame you. Toyota's have factory mounting points which makes this way easier.
