  • Welcome to a new series called Overland DIY. This series will be about fun do it yourself projects to make your vehicle more off-road capable. In this first video we're installing an all new suspension system on my friend Chris' 2016 Chevy Colorado Z71. We'll show you how to install the Stage 5 suspension system from ICON Vehicle Dynamics and some new BFGoodrich KO2's on ICON alloy wheels. The install was a ton of fun, but there were some pitfalls we came across that this video will help you navigate around.
    Here are the PDF instructions and tool lists for installing the kit yourself:

    The production quality is top notch. Well done! Ohh, always do your final torque to spec for the UCAs while the vehicle is resting on its own weight on the ground. This will help prevent wear or even tearing of the bushings.

    Very cool! I own a 2019 Colorado Crew Cab 4x4, V6, that is love to add this kit to! There’s another sire on RUclips with a guy that calls it HPO Horse Power Obsessed. That when he trimmed that plastic piece that you attach the lower front part of the fender liner with zip ties? He just trimmed the plastic back to the vertical area’s, that then allowed him to us the clip nuts, that he slid over the plastic just like factory to affix the liner to. Looks much better, especially after all that work! . I would also trim the bolts more, or at least cover with acorn nuts, to protect the treads. Or add the small skid plates the make.

    I own a 2021 Canyon AT4 and am looking at Icon. How do you like the on road performance? I mostly drive on pavement but bout 60 miles away I can be having fun in the Mojave Desert. The only upgrade I’ve done is remove my air dam.
    I see prices of $5300 for a complete kit. I’m not opposed to spending it, if it delivers the goods! LOL 😝 REALLY love the Icon wheels! I’m thinking of upgrading tires to 265/75/R17 which reportedly gives me 32.65 tall. Width 10.4
    Have you considered regearing at all? I here owners state going above 31’s rob power and performance. Low range maybe? Do you notice a change?

      One of my favorite things about the stage 5 kit specifically is the ability to dial in the dampening. I believe I had the shocks set at setting 4 for on road and it felt great!
      I did the same size tires that you're looking at, and didn't feel the need to regear. Any bigger though, and it'd probably be worth it. Thanks for reaching out and good luck!

    Hi, @Jason Explains Things. Ive just purchased a used 2019 Colorado Z71 and Im interested in making a few mods, but Im a newbie to all things 4x4 and off-roading. My truck is my everyday vehicle and I use it to tow a 4300lb travel trailer. My first question is: How significantly and in what specific ways should I expect suspension changes like those in this video will change my everyday ride? Q2: Do mods like these impact mpgs to any extent and how much impact on such did the front air dam removal have? Q3: If Im not looking to pursue serious off-roading, just the occasional adventure in areas where I really, really do not want to get stuck, which mods to suspension components would you suggest I prioritize on a stock Colorado Z71? TIA!

    • @JasonExplainsThings
      @JasonExplainsThings  2 года назад

      So Chris would probably be the best to answer these but I'll try my best. #1 Suspension upgrades can make every day driving more comfortable and improve handling. This kit is more geared to off-road performance. There are other more affordable options out there... not saying this is a bad option, it's just a lot of money. For instance I installed Eibach coilovers and rear shocks/springs on my 4Runner and it was a huge improvement both on and off road... that kit probably cost about a third of this one.
      #2 Increasing tire size and going all terrain instead of all season will hurt your gas mileage. The larger the tire, the worse the effect, unless you regear your truck. On my truck I increased the tire size by 1 inch and went with All Terrain KO2's (like Chris did here). My MPG went down by 1-2 I'd say. But I didn't go as oversized as we did in this video.
      #3 Sounds like a suspension upgrade is a good idea for you, but not one this extensive. Look at Eibach and Bilstein. I'd get some nice All Terrain Tires, but just not go too big. That way you have better off-road performance, but you don't hurt daily driving. All Terrain Tires like KO2's are also great because they're snow rated. I love them in the winter.
      Hope this helps.

    • @JasonExplainsThings
      @JasonExplainsThings  2 года назад

      Oh... and for the air dam I'd have to defer to Chris. I'm sure it does something, but if you off-road at all I'd remove it personally. It makes your ground clearance much worse and it's pretty ugly in my personal opinion. I'd imagine it does help gas mileage on the freeway a bit... not sure how much. Around town it likely does nothing at all. Many new trucks like the 2022 Tundra have powered air dams that come down when you're going above 50 MPH.

      Hey Jason, yes, I did end up trimming quite a bit off of the rear of the front fender well, sadly it didn't make it into the video because I did it on my own in the two weeks between install and final testing in the vid. I don't have either the cameras or the expertise to film it like he did, lol. But yes, it was a lot.

    I'm really interested in getting a stage 4 installed in my 2019 Colorado (Z71-4WD) after watching this video a month or so ago. Pretty pricey kit but from the research that I've done it really seems to be worth every penny. How has it been treating you and have you had any issues with it?
