  • Furnace error diagnostic codes explained. If your furnace is blinking or flashing an error code and you are not sure what it means, this video is a great place to start. I go over the most common troubleshooting error codes a furnace may put out such as flame not sensed codes, pressure switch error code, ignition lockout, primary limit switch code, etc. No matter how many times it blinks (2,3,4,5 times..), this video will set you on the right path to figure out what the problem is and how to fix it.

    Well thanks to you and other techies I finally diagnosed the problem/s. Even though the igniter glowed brightly 🌞 the gas wasn't igniting so I originally said there was no gas flowing. But then another video suggested that if the burner/s were very dirty the gas wouldn't spray out well enough to light. But it could still probably light from a flame. So I did as suggested and used a barbecue lighter to good effect. 😀 I still have to clean the burners. They are a little tricky to take out as there are barely visible screws on the bottom. But I have heat and no service call bill to pay. 😉

    Great videos and thanks for sharing your knowledge. Dealing with a carrier 58sta090 ignition lockout issue. Furnace turns off when it temperature drops to near freezing, usually overnight. Ignition turns on, but no flame. Flame sensor has been replaced. By midmorning, once I reset it, the furnace turns on and works all day, but at night the furnace going into lockout. Any recommendations. Thinking it might be a sticking gas value 🤔. Thank you in advance.

    Hey Jay, non-related question to the present topic but thought I would try and get your advice anyway. Just had a 3-ton unit installed and have a 20 X 25 return vent. Heard about the 200 rule, 200 sq. inches per ton, and wonder if I should challenge my HVAC company about it. There is a little low whistling sometimes at the vent but not a major sound problem. Should I just bend some of the grill fens out straight and let it go with that. Return is in the hallway so it's visible.

    Question about a 2 stage furnace. (Rheem prestige 96%)How does the furnace know when to go into high gas pressure mode. I’m assuming the amount of time it takes to reach the desired temp that the thermostat is calling for? Example is 15min the magic number that the board will switch into high if it hasn’t reached the temp the thermostat is calling for?
    Last question when the furnace first fires up does it fire on high and switch right back to low PSI?
    Thanks

    My furnace wont kick on when I turn up the thermostat. So my thermostat could say its 73 degrees in my house and I turn it up to 75 or 76 and the furnace wont come on so I flip the breaker off and flip it back on and then the furnace comes on and it will run for a little while then it shuts off and it will come back on about 2 more times and then I have to go flip the breaker off and on again. I have changed the batteries in my thermostat, and I have bought a new breaker and changed the breaker, I switched off the breaker and then switched it back on. I haven't checked the filter yet. I'll do that in the morning. I'm sure it's the filter now from what you have said, as we've lived here in this house a year and a half and have never changed the filter and I don't really know how dirty the filter may have been when we moved into this home. Thank you so much!!!

    HI Jay: Didn't watch all your videos before replacing motor and capacitor. Tried with new and got code 33 a couple of times. Then watched the video on trouble shooting and got 109V between blue & white. Error code now 12 and have no idea where to go from here. Any suggestions. When I got the 33 the inducer started; the flame lit; but the blower never ran. Trying to think of how to jump the motor as suggested to see if it spins up.

Additionally, the blower motor runs continuously, even with the thermostat removed and the green wire disconnected from the control board. Suggestions?

    Question: The furnace manual gives a max. distance of 24" between the intake and exhaust on a side wall termination. I ran into a furnace where they are spaced about 42" but are on the same west facing wall. Could there be issues with this in the long run? ( Found very vague info on the importance of being in the same pressure zone)

    • @WordofAdviceTV
      @WordofAdviceTV  3 года назад +2

      Hey Matt! I have never looked into that but I have seen plenty of them spaced out more than 24" and I haven't run into any problems that were caused by that. I think the only way to get a concrete answer would be to call the manufacturer. I know Carrier usually has very knowledgeable reps in that regard. They would likely have an answer for something like that.

    Is it normal for a Daikin furnace to change status codes while running? I've noticed it says F3 when only the fan is running, then switches from P1 3, P1 7, or P1 8 in no certain order when the A/C is running. My hvac company said the codes were not normal, especially since the furnace was installed 3 months ago. I thought it was just switching status codes based on what was running (a/c or just fan). I trust my hvac company but wanted your opinion too.

    I have experienced an error code 5, which according to the code legend on the cover, is an open fuse.
    However, it is not the mouve colored fuse which is easily spotted, as I checked it as ok.
    I noted on the secondary of the transformer wiring, a fuse exists(3A) is shown,..but I can not seem to find it.
    It apparently provides power to the humidifier transformer. When replacing a bad solenoid the hose blew off the output of the solenoid and got the connections wet enough to blow that fuse.
    I am quite anxious to find it before my client loses all confidence in me.
    can you help Jay?

    My furnace shut off and blinks 3 times. I am trying to figure it out currently as I cannot get anyone to look at it till next week and I'm in Canada, starting to get cold. Any help is GREATLY appreciated. On the diagnostic chart, it says 3 blinds means: Pressure switch open when should be closed on single-stage models. Low-pressure switches open when should be closed on 2 stage/VS models.
    I have no idea what that means or what model I have. Where can I find this info? I am quite handy so I know I can figure this out, I just need some guidance as this is my home (not a renter).

    There was a leak from another condo upstairs, being an electrician I started looking into it. It is the middle of summer so this needed done, everything would shut off, had to dry everything inside the furnace and then the solid yellow light stayed on. All I could find on the error code was basically just flame sensor this and flame sensor that. So I could not find anything on it really that had to do with my situation is there anything else it could mean?

    I deal with 108 day and night furnaces. A common issue is the pressure switch error. I replace the pressure switch and it works, but I am wondering if there is an underlying issue causing the switches to go out.

      Aloha David! Thanks for stopping by 😃 In Minnesota I rarely had to replace pressure switches. Usually they were tripping because there was actually a problem. I am not sure what's going on in your case.. Do you have a combustion analyzer? It would be interesting to know what the CO emissions are on the furnaces with failed pressure switches.

    Any ideas why my brand new furnace won’t run until I pull the orange wire off the pressure switch? Then the inducer motor comes on and I put the orange wire back on runs fine until it shuts off and calls for heat again same procedure again.

    Hey Jay, good video here with a lot of everyday error codes explained... really appreciate it a lot, but unfortunately, it didn't help me.
    I have a goodman furnace. This winter I turned it on and it worked for maybe a few days just fine, but this morning, it just started giving red continuous rapid flashes... after looking at the code on the panel, the error code = REVERSED 115 VAC POLARITY/VERIFY GND. I tried looking up online for a specific answer, some say my board is bad, and some say the wiring needs to be reversed. WHAT SHOULD I DO.... ??? Completely confused. It was working just fine yesterday, what is the issue today with the wiring. I didn't touch it yet... ANY HELP WILL BE APPRECIATED... 😇😃

    I have a tappan furnace, 120,000 btu, the yellow light on the control board is illuminated (no flashes), looking on the furnace door it states "yellow light flame fault" so I didn't want raw gas being dumped in my furnace I called a furnace professional, he stated " everything checks out working fine" then left, but did nothing to fix the yellow light. I did find an exhaust elbow leaking, so i corrected that, prior to the guy arriving I went through all the diagnostic checks, all sensors were fine, gas valve gets 120 volts that opens during the cycle, cleaned the flame sensor and even replaced a 2 week old filter but still the yellow light? I even went as far to snake my exhaust/intake clear no obstruction but can't clear the fault. Upon the furnace company's arrival, he checked the co2 level, water column and gas pressure which were all in specs however, I told him the condensate pump barely runs, he stated the heat exchanger was fine given the co2 readings? My reply is that they might read 81 but could be dumping in the furnace creating pressure and overheating? He did no further checks, charged me 148 bucks and left without fixing the yellow light issue (flame fault) . I would like your input on this flame fault board light and see if we can't correct the issue? I have a 2 year old goodman, coil and condenser in the garage but have no time just want to get through another 4 months and it'll be replaced.
    Thank you!

    My York two stage is blinking 7 times and it says low gas flow. The ignitor is glowing red but the furnace is not igniting. There is another part I cleaned with a dollar bill a few weeks ago. I wonder if the gas valve is not opening? I believe something clicks when it opens and allows gas through? It has been doing this a few times for a few weeks now?🤔

    Got a question for ya. My furnace is only a few yrs old. The first yr we had it on 70 degrees and it was great heating. On cold days we put it up to 71 and it was so warm, sometimes we had to put it back down to 70. This year, however, we have to put the temp. at 72 and its no where close to the heat we felt the previous 2 yrs. Ive cleaned the vents professionally and made sure dampers were open. Im always replacing the filter as soon as it gets dirty ..i cant figure out why the furnace isnt working as efficiently as the first few yrs ......?

      Is is a two stage furnace ? Is the furnace oversized for the house? I wonder if you have a high pressure switch issue. Does your furnace have a led light system? If so it could be giving you codes, as to what the problems can be. I can suggest depending on the brand of furnace you have to call the manufacturer of the furnace, and speak to Customer Service and ask for a recommended list of factory Authorized service companies that they recommend. I had to do that the Carrier furnace I have. Hope that helps!

    What if you get the error code “Lockout due to excessive retries”? On a Goodman GMVC96

    • @WordofAdviceTV
      @WordofAdviceTV  2 года назад +2

      That means the furnace is in a lockout/standby for 3 hours. Try turning the power on and off to the furnace and pay attention to the error code light. It should give you a different code after the reset, when the furnace tries starting up again.

    Mine keeps doing a soft lockout so do you think it could be the igniter?

    • @WordofAdviceTV
      @WordofAdviceTV  2 года назад +1

      Before it goes into a soft lockout, it should be blinking a different code. I would reset power to the furnace and then watch the code once it powers back on. It could be an ignitor but there are plenty of other things that can cause a soft lockout too. This video may help with narrowing down the problem too: ruclips.net/video/AQD_MedIklI/видео.html

    Can you go online and find a error code chart for a furnace with chart missing

    • @WordofAdviceTV
      @WordofAdviceTV  3 года назад +2

      Yes, you should be able to. For example if I was working on a Carrier furnace with no chart, I would try googling "Carrier furnace error code chart" and look at the images. Brands don't change their error code charts very often so unless it's a high tech new model of a furnace, an old chart should work for most of them. You could also go to the manufacturer website and using the model number find the online manual for it and sometimes the error code chart will be in there as well.
