Mario kart 7 will always hold a special place in my heart, it was the first Mario Kart game I was able to 100% and I love the gliding feature, I genuinely enjoy 7 more than Mario Kart wii
I’m glad the gran turismo inspiration was mentioned because Mario Kart DS specifically always felt like it took lots of great ideas from GT4 and made them their own. I miss that era of racing games
A super interesting factoid I learned from the gaming historian - there was actually a very specific reason that the CPU racers in Super Mario Kart had exclusive items and abilities. For reasons I don’t fully understand (on account of not being a software engineer with an understanding of how these numerical systems work in programming), the development team couldn’t figure out how to execute the randomized item distribution system for both human racers AND computer players. Or at least, they couldn’t get it working without having to make severe cuts into other aspects of the game. The system we all know and don’t love was basically the most well-balanced compromise they could come up with on the hardware. Proper item distribution for human racers where the items are randomized differently based on one’s placing, and one specific power-up assigned to each computer character. That way it was still well-balanced, but didn’t require near as much computing power.
1:06:40 "you can probably play the entire game on the bottom screen if you're a complete f*cking maniac" this is exactly how I played it back in the day. Why? Because the bottom screen was unaffected by the Blooper's ink and I could just drive as normal using the bottom screen map. My friends were always annoyed when they got the Blooper playing against me because it was effectively how Scott described the Feather in Super Mario Kart: "Waste it to get a better item next time"
Not gonna lie, I was expecting a compilation of his Mario Kart episodes to be uploaded on his main channel, much like the "Dark Age of Nintendo" series or the "Wiiware Chronicles" series. But hey, uploading it here sounds fine too.

I actually like the idea of SMK to cut half the screen and use the map for the other half. It immediately allows the player to get used to playing like that, rather than forcing 2 people to get used to it at the same time.
I'm surprised you didn't mention how each character in the early games had secret speed stats! Like, Toad was apparently the fastest, but nothing would tell you that in game. Also, in defense of Double Dash's "P1 drives, P2 does items", this was basically designed for younger siblings. When I was little, I wasn't good at the driving part, but because of this mode, I could still have fun with my big bro!
18:06 - I love the sheer amount of "aging like milk" that statement underwent Nevermind that, if memory serves, Kamek had a logo sitting around in MK8's files, meaning he did in fact get another chance but ultimately blew it there too _But_ he did eventually end up existing in the stupid phone one and further eventually ended up in a real Mario Kart via Deluxe's Booster Pass He's one of the 3 good things I could ever possibly say about that thing, in part because it's just vindicating seeing him in a [again, real] Mario Kart after his history of being cut from 2 different entries
DS is my favorite purely for the memories I had with it. In like 6th and 7th grade me and my friends would all bring our DS’s and play during bus rides and lunch and stuff and it was so much fun. Nowadays I play MK8 Deluxe and I feel like I get to competitive more than just sitting back and laughing at all the wacky happenings
Mario Kart 64 came out when I was 7. Super circuit came out when I was 11. I played the shit out of 64 with friends. But also with my grandmother. She loved it. We would literally stay up until 2-4 AM playing it. Did that for years when I'd go stay with her for the weekend. She also loved several other games. Mario party, etc. Good times. I've only played 64, super circuit, double dash (once), and just bought 8 today.....10 years late. But it's a huge jump from the 64. I like it.
Scott love the content my man but fun fact donkey Kong Jr. Is the donkey Kong we have now and crankey Kong was the donkey Kong from the original arcade game, so in between super Mario kart and Mario kart 64 he grew up!
I hope he’s gonna release compilations for all of the 3D Mario games, the Mario Party games, the 2D Mario games, and all of Nintendo’s different consoles (before the Switch, since he already released a 6 hour compilation just focused on the Switch)

I personally love double dash and think it’s one of older Mario Karts that needs a port or maybe in Mario Kart 9 they bring back the core mechanic of double dash
The thing about the personal customizable emblems in Mario Kart DS is they were shown when you played against other people online, so it became a way for people to express their individuality
Turned this video on in the bkround late at night so no one would hear the video on my phone but was genuinely to enthralled in the fun and interesting Mario kart content and was cured of my sins
Mission mode on MKDS and the minigames on New Super Mario Bros should have been compulsory additions to every future entry in the series. Waluigi Pinball is what heaven looks like.

Just for the record, the way to handle driving in the first Super Mario Kart is to hop into and out of turns. Many years ago, I had a couple roommates who were diehard fans of the game and had nightly tournaments. I learned how to play SMK from those guys and really learned to love it.
Dude I feel like most people keep forgetting about what else the 2nd player can do behind the driver in MK Double Dash. The 2nd player can help with drifting, and they can also wack other drivers while stealing their items. This is sort of the reason why they could've made a Double Dash successor or sequel for the Switch. The joy cons controls would work perfectly for the 2 player co-op controls. Cause one driver is more focused on driving controls, and rear end player is more focused on items, assisting drifting controls and wacking other drivers to steal their items.
I think my favourite tidbit about MK64, to this day, is triple tapping A after getting hit while playing as a light character. 0 to 60 in just three taps
I grew up with Mariokart DS and played for several years- by the time Mariokart 7 was released, I was amazed by the new mechanics introduced (I.e, flying, driving underwater etc.) and found games 7 and 8 legendary. Nowadays, their standards are quite ordinary for gaming. Looking back is one of the only things that make me feel old. 😂
I love how the entire premise of the MK8DX video is irrelevent now seeing how there are 48 more courses in 8 deluxe then 8, which would probably convince *god* that MK8DX is a different game.
Oh man… you just made me miss MiiVerse again. I loved the ridiculous stuff people would post at the end of 3D World levels and in the MiiVerse Super Smash level. The internet has no sense of humor anymore though, so maybe it’s for the best.

One thing I never hear mentioned when people discuss double dash is it’s the first game where the CPU drivers actually get items from the item boxes like the player instead of having pre determines items.
Ironic that with Scott saying to give up on 8 Deluxe DLC for it to just drop the biggest DLC anyone could think of with double the courses and 6 new characters (including Kamek btw). Maybe Nintendo like it's main target is just a kid and you think they'll never do something because of how long the opportunity has been there and they didn't do it until one day they just do it and in a much bigger way than you thought they would initially.
Thing is with handheld multiplayer, that's how ALL games worked multiplayer so it feels very unfair to mark it down for that. Multiplayer on the Game Boy was around since Tetris in 1989 and it was like that for TWELVE YEARS; not only did you have to bring a Game Boy and a link cable, but you also both had to have the same game, so it was really rare. I only ever played a few handheld games multiplayer a handful of times, like Dr Mario, Tetris and of course, Pokémon. When the GBA came out and it let you play Mario Kart with only one of you owning the game, it was amazing and it was a point in its favour, not against. Because I could take my game boy to school whereas I couldn't take my Gamecube or N64 to school, I actually ended up playing Mario Kart SC and DS multiplayer the most out of all of them, despite single cart being very limited. Definitely agree that SC hasn't aged well though along with SMK and MK64, and that MK7 is the most forgettable. I don't personally think MKDS has aged well either, and I think MKW has more of a niche than you're giving it credit for, it feels like the most technical Mario Kart due to bikes and wheelies. However largely I agree there's little reason not to just playing MK8D aside from MKDD, even though I had the most fun with Mario Kart Wii.
scott i know this is a completely worthless testimony but i was having a hellish time last night because my eye hurt so bad and i just stuck a wet washcloth over there for like 2 hours and the whole time i was lying there feeling not so nice, i was listening to this video and it was just really neat so thanks for making so many youtube videos that really helped me right then
Just came here to say that Super Mario Kart felt super archaic visyally even in 1993. We all had seen glimpses of fast 3d racing games at that point. It had to live on the merits of its gameplay alone, especially battle mode. (MK8 not having one was insane)

Mario Kart DS was my very first ever video game and i love it to this day. I fire it up every now and then to play a round or two.
Mario Kart DS was my jam and I for one loved snaking.
18:06 - I love the sheer amount of "aging like milk" that statement underwent
Nevermind that, if memory serves, Kamek had a logo sitting around in MK8's files, meaning he did in fact get another chance but ultimately blew it there too
_But_ he did eventually end up existing in the stupid phone one and further eventually ended up in a real Mario Kart via Deluxe's Booster Pass
He's one of the 3 good things I could ever possibly say about that thing, in part because it's just vindicating seeing him in a [again, real] Mario Kart after his history of being cut from 2 different entries
Fun fact, I prefer said stupid phone game over half the real entries in this series.
I like it.
I really wish I could have told Scott he can avoid the pow block by shaking the Wiimote at the right time
WHO’S READY FOR SCOTT TO PULL A MARIO 3D WORLD AND TALK ABOUT MARIO KART 8 A THIRD TIME ONCE THE COURSE PASS IS COMPLETE?!?!^^
Thank you for giving me an excuse to go back an like every single Mario Kart video you made in order 😌
Double dash was my favorite. Especially after unlocking the golden car.
These reviews were pure fun. THX for this loooong video, Scott.
Scott love the content my man but fun fact donkey Kong Jr. Is the donkey Kong we have now and crankey Kong was the donkey Kong from the original arcade game, so in between super Mario kart and Mario kart 64 he grew up!
Bruh Scott I’m literally in the middle of my every-so-oftenly rewatch of your Mario kart videos
I hope he’s gonna release compilations for all of the 3D Mario games, the Mario Party games, the 2D Mario games, and all of Nintendo’s different consoles (before the Switch, since he already released a 6 hour compilation just focused on the Switch)
jsal woah
Double dash co op mode was crazy. Second player could help get a double dash speed boost and could punch and kick other racers. Such an awesome mode
You do realize that was the whole point of the game and that everyone know that, right?
@@tmw3489that wasn’t explained in the video so why u being a dick to this guys comment. And no that wasnt the whole basis of the game lol. Its meant for multiplayer not coop. That was just an add on feature
@@parkour267 disagree hard
When I was a kid I thought the "Manual" and "automatic" options in mario kart wii were to use a manual or automatic gearbox.
18:06 my boy finally finally got his chance as a mario kart character

It's still funny how scott doesn't know you could shake the wii remote to avoid the POW
U just brought back memories
I was today years old when I found out this
"Of course no matter what people kept predicting Mario Kart 8 Deluxe would get DLC every year after its release. Just give up." This is my favorite line, only because we eventually did get DLC, our prayers were heard! xD

After listening through this whole thing, I have one major takeaway, the perfect description for all Mario Kart games:
It's Mario Kart.
Also, 2:41:55 implies that buying new shoes is Scott's canon event
hey there's no mario kart tour
oh it's only updated to 2017
Just for the record, the way to handle driving in the first Super Mario Kart is to hop into and out of turns. Many years ago, I had a couple roommates who were diehard fans of the game and had nightly tournaments. I learned how to play SMK from those guys and really learned to love it.
So funny I love Double Dash and yet I don't own a GameCube or Double Dash. Just such a cool idea having someone watch your back.
You can also switch spots anytime if the players press the z button at the same time
I think my favourite tidbit about MK64, to this day, is triple tapping A after getting hit while playing as a light character. 0 to 60 in just three taps
“Playing the entire game on the bottom screen like a maniac” 🎉😂
I just rewatched them all individually wonderful
Scott. This isn’t a snippet, this is a compilation-
I grew up with Mariokart DS and played for several years- by the time Mariokart 7 was released, I was amazed by the new mechanics introduced (I.e, flying, driving underwater etc.) and found games 7 and 8 legendary.
My room mates at uni were obsessed with mario kart 64.. you dont look old enough .. :D
The only two and a half hour video I will ever need

They need to bring all the best gamecube games to the switch. Take all my money
@@parkour267bruh, just get a gamecube.
Emulation . Get a retro handheld prefer the ODIN 2
Such a captivating upload.
Glade you spent some time highlighting how hard double dash was, I just found out king boo was in the game because of this video
Double Dash's name also relates to the console as it was the first mario kart made for a (specialized) disk drive.
I know what you’re all thinking, when will Scott look at the Mario Kart Arcade GP games?
1:06:40
Funnily enough I did learn how to play exclusively on the bottom screen to negate the blooper when I played against my cousins
scott i know this is a completely worthless testimony but i was having a hellish time last night because my eye hurt so bad and i just stuck a wet washcloth over there for like 2 hours and the whole time i was lying there feeling not so nice, i was listening to this video and it was just really neat so thanks for making so many youtube videos that really helped me right then
Just came here to say that Super Mario Kart felt super archaic visyally even in 1993. We all had seen glimpses of fast 3d racing games at that point.
It had to live on the merits of its gameplay alone, especially battle mode.
(MK8 not having one was insane)
we used to have huge DS battles at work during lunch. I was always 2nd cuz one guy who just so happened to be named Yoshi was crazy good.
that's one hell of a "snippet"
Kamek is confirmed DLC for Mario Kart 8
I and the Arcade GP tetralogy can wait
The Booster Course Pass got impatient though
