Off-Road Beast Daily Driver Build - 2020 4Runner Walkaround

- Опубликовано: 23 июл 2024
- This is my daily driven 2020 4Runner TRD Off-Road Premium that I want to be able to get anywhere with it, go camping, off-roading, etc. I want to add function but not limit its daily drivability. It's not a super loaded down overland rig, but looks aggressive, and has real performance capabilities, not just cosmetic (why I went for Icon suspension and not just body spacers or Bilstein 5100s, for example).
I made this video for a walk around truck contest (didn't win ¯\_(ツ)_/¯) but thought I'd share the video on RUclips because it might be helpful for someone looking for ideas.
I haven't seen many modified 2020s out there, a main thing to point out is that the C4 Fab LoPro bumper's full heigh bull bar does clear the TSS sensor that the 2020s have.
Modification info:

Good looking, well thought out setup. Love that you added what you need, not what looks good at Walmart.
Nice ride! I don't do anything too crazy with my 4Runner, so I'll just put Eibach springs around the Fox shocks that came with it. I'm just hoping for a little more lift so that I can fit 285 tires like the ones you have. 4Runners look perfect with those. Enjoy your truck!
Thanks for the walk around, I've been wanting to build something very similar to this.
Beautiful rig. I just bought the same TRD Off-road 2021 in Super White. Will be mirroring your mods.
Beautiful truck you got here ! I love my Trd pro!
That is a really nice set-up and not to far from what I want to do with my 4runner. Oh, and your dog is adorable.
Thank you! And Radio says thanks too.
Awesome build man!!
Nice rig , clean set up
cool edit, clean looking rig! 💯
Awesome 😎! Simple and practical.
cool video and nice set up dude
Love it, simple and awesome!
Thank you!
That’s a clean build 👍
Dayem sick sick setup.
Rigs really DOPE!
Beautiful Truck!
Very clean rig.
Really nice set up.
Thank you! It's been fun to work on.
Very nice. I’m getting ready to buy my very first 4Runner and I’m trying to figure out what to do to it add on wise. 🤔😃
nice setup!
Awesome rig, Caleb. Will you consider doing a vid of what recovery gear you keep?
Cool vid mane! Cool lay out!
702Pro thanks!!
Love it! Just bought myself the same model, except in silver. I hope you don’t mind but I’ll be copying you
How far along are your mods?
Beautiful
How do you like the 'on road' driving with the Icon stage II? I hear off road that it performs excellent, but it is a little stiff on road. As of now it is still my number one choice for a suspension upgrade but before I buy I would like to get more feedback on the 'on road' comfort or stiffness of the Icon stage II suspension. How do you like yours?
That's a nice looking rig you got there.
Thank you! I dig the FJ.
For sure is sick. Im thinking on buying a 2015 4runner limited with 27k miles on it. You think thats a good deal?
Caleb Kerr check out my comment
@@realkingrey2732 the limited is more for soccer moms. I got a SR5 premium with moonroof, 3 inch level kit, method wheels, 33'' nitto, nerf bars for 37k out the door. I haven't seen any priced even close to this low. I'm in love with it. I'd go sr5 premium or trd pro premium. The limited has a bunch of chrome and isn't really for offroading
nice touches 👍🏻
Very nice Build 👌 👍🇺🇸
The Vermonter
fantastic build!!!! Just right!! Also, where did you get your mods. done?
that bumper should be oem for that trim. nice
Clean rig.
Like the blacked out emblems. How did you black out the chrome lines on either side of the front Toyota emblem.
Daaayum! Super clean set up! Very impressive 👍👍.
Did you have to upgrade the rear springs on the icon kit to accommodate weight or just go with regular load rating?
Almost my dream car! Just missing kdss
Looks great! I wonder why no one talks not their tint. It can get pricey and there is a lot to it.
4runners are the best
Very nice
It looks really good. Thats, kind of,the look im going for. What are your thoughts on snorkels? Im new to the 4x4 world. Learning as i go.
Thank you! And I am too, so I can't say I have all the answers. I'll say this on snorkels - they look pretty cool, but you have to be doing some VERY aggressive driving for them to actually be needed from what I understand. I wouldn't put that as a top priority mod right out of the gate personally.
How did you black out the chrome strips on the front? I have the same model
does the TSS system still work even with the suspension? i have the 2023 4R and I hear that lifting your truck messes with the adaptive cruise control and such
Nice build! I’m looking at the same wheels for my build, do you know what’s the offset? I think methods usually come in 0 offset, but not sure. Looks clean whatever you have on.
Kristian Altier You got it - 0 offset, 4.75 backspacing. Basically built for a 4Runner!
I just got that Prinsu rack for my 2018 SR5 premium. I love the premium. I got it loaded with level kit, rock sliders, 17inch rims on 33s all storm troopered out for $37k. 28k miles on it. I stole it lol. If I was a baller I woulda gone trd pro premium. Love your set up. My boy is going to paint my front bumper black so it'll look like a trd pro. More mod videos on that badboy please! Haha
Enjoy it!
@@CalebKerr nothing better Tyngsboro having all the windows down, seat heaters on and moonroof open while cruising the back woods haha.
Is that a 2" or 3" lift via Icon? Did you keep the factory "rake" can't tell from video angle? great vids, thanks-
2.5” upfront/levelled rear.
holy preload batman
Did the suspension give you enough clearance to avoid a BMC or bumper cutting?
Where did you get your bumper powder coating done.
sickkkk
Would you be able to provide a cost breakdown?
What size gunner kennel was that in the cargo area? Large for a golden retriever?
Would love to see the cost breakdown! Awesome 4Runner!
*Expensive*
Second this
What size Kennel is that? I’m in the market for a 4Runner and wasn’t sure if my kennel would fit.
Would that suspension setup be compatible with kdss?
What did you use to black out the two chrome sides of emblem on the front grill since theres nothing in the black out kits. Thanks!
Badging ...you can get them on Amazon or at any totyota dealer
you mind listing what you have in your yeti go box.. maybe a detailed video?
Steven Venuto Great idea! I’m actually about to launch a vehicle specific Instagram account (as to not clog up my main one) that’s all vehicle stuff, and I can definitely cover it there. IG handle is @spindrift.rnr.
Nice rig. How are you securing your kennel?
Hi is that fit to my 4runner 2011? And how much the cost?..thanks
I have the same color 2020 off road premium..what blackout kit for the badges did you use..OEM or one of the cheaper options?
A buddy had a spare OEM badge overlay for the grill, the rest I plasti dipped.
How much did you lift your 4 runner?
My 2020 orp has DRL in the turn signal switch. Did you get a different wire harness with a different switch for the BD fogs?
Mine has the same. The BD fogs are just plug and play, no harness. Just unplug the factory light and plug in the new ones at the light.
Nice truck! Do you rub when you reverse?
Where did you purchase the pro style “grill” if you will? 4runner life style has none left in stock
I vinyl wrapped the horizontal bar (under the emblem). I got the 4Runner in fall of 2019, and accessories for the 2020 grill (with TSS) weren't available yet. The vinyl has held up extremely well, going on over 2 years at this point.
Love your vehicle. Have the same but wouldlike to add the bull bar. Whete did you get it. Have checked allover here in canada nothing to be found that doesnt cover the sensors. Please reply.
Hi Mario - I can't speak for all bumper manufacturers because each will be a little different, but this is the LoPro from C4 Fabrication and the full height bull bar does not interfere with the TSS sensors in any way. You can order it here: c4fabrication.com/collections/4runner-2014/products/4runner-lo-pro-winch-bumper-5th-gen-2014
@@CalebKerr thanks.much appreciated .will follow through.
I’m guessing those methods are 17x8.5 0 offset? With the 285/70r/17 ko2 did you have to do BMC? Or just light trimming on the front plastic bumper?
You are correct across the board. 0 offset, and no BMC, a little trimming on the bumper (not really a noticeable amount even).
@@CalebKerr sweet! Also the icon stage 2, how much lift did it add front/rear, new to lifts sorry.
Thanks for the video, I’m looking to do something similar. Did you mention anywhere the cost for your mods?
*Expensive*
Very clean. Almost exactly what I plan on doing. KDSS?
Matthew Lucas thanks! No KDSS
Hi I bought a Toyota 4Runner off road 2021 and I want to put on it the body Armor 4x4 tr-19339 hiline stubby black powder coat front winch hd. And I wanted your expert opinion since you know much more than I do. Would this bumper block my front sensor?
It entirely depends on that bumper and it’s shape. You’d need to confirm with the manufacturer.
Did you have any issues with the TSS and that L4 bumper you chose?
Following
What about the TSS? do you have any problems? it looks like you have an older bull bar. What is the clearance of the bull bar 6" - 7"?? ... Please let me know. Thanks
This is the current model for the C4 LoPro bumper with full height bull bar, no interference with the TSS.
@@CalebKerr I apologize!... you clearly said it on the video, I have problems with my and I'm trying to find solutions. Thanks again.
Are you pleased with the Icon set up? Any tire rub issues?
Btw, I checked out your photo work and it is top tier.
Extremely happy with it. No rub at all with this setup, which the installer was surprised by. When I dropped it off at the shop, he was like "I'm pretty sure we'll need to do the body mount chop, most of these trucks need it" then called me a few hours later saying it was done because they didn't have to and everything fit great. No rub at full lock. And thanks for the kind words on my work - cheers!
@@CalebKerr Did you wrap your front grill cross member and your rear lower bumper insert black? Or did you buy new parts in black?
What a beautiful rig. What was the height of your lift with the Icon stage 2? 3"in front and 2" in rear?
Love the set up except one thing, your pup ought to be sitting shotgun! 😎🤘🏽
Did you do a body mount chop to accommodate your 285's
No, but a very small trim off the front fender (toward the bumper).
Do you have KDSS on this rig? If so, any problems after the suspension lift?
No KDSS, so unfortunately can't help you out there, sorry!
no it does not effect , Icon shocks are expensive and they will give you all add on which keep your KDSS in tune .
What was the total price on the build
Where did you powder coat your c4 bumper? Great job!
A local shop in Austin, Texas called Powder ATX
How difficult was it to install the bumper? Did you have to unhook the TSS in the front?
The TSS is what I'm needing to know too. Have you had ANY issues with the sensor with that bumper??
@@nicholassinovich4257 I haven't installed the bumper yet as I am low on funds. hopefully they figure it out though.
I like the sliders man! What's the make again?
RSG - angled with kick outs.
when you lifted it did you need to get the TSS sensor re-dialed?
MODLIN FILMZ Nope! No impact to its function in any way.
Caleb Kerr even with the lift it didn’t need to be dialed lower?
Love your rig!! How you blackout your front bumper chrome line or stripe behind the Toyota logo? Thanks!
Thank you! I used plasti dip for that, and it worked great. I don't like using plasti dip for large surface areas (like bumper valances, for instance), but small things like those pieces, or emblems, it works great!
Caleb Kerr Thank you very much!👍🏼
Caleb Kerr What kind of paint or color and brand? If you don’t mind. Thanks!
To be clear, it’s plasti dip not paint. Just regular flat black.
What hitch lock brand and D rings you have there Bro? Thanks!
Does your rig have KDSS? If so any issues with the lift?
No KDSS
Does the bull bar affect the sensor on the grill at all?
Tuổi Trẻ Omaha no
No rust yet Nice
K.C. I live in Texas, I don’t really expect rust to be an issue at any point.
@@CalebKerr Ha Rite less there was a flood that engulfed the entire state for a whole month 😳 (derp moment) now I know y u went for the light bars, pre runner maybe later down the road?
Nice video ,Question : how much it cost you special shocks + labour , please
This will vary a lot depending on the exact items you buy, the region you live in, what your local shops charge, etc. I’d recommend reaching out to a local off road shop and asking for a quote.
@@CalebKerr Thank you for your time , i just ask your estimate expense , thanks
How the icon if you still have them on ?
Still have them on, still great!
I love your wheels set up. What is your wheels spec?
Method MR701. 17x8.5, 0 offset, 4.75 spacing
What did you do for rear lift?
Icon Stage 2 has new shocks and springs in the rear.
Looks awesome do you plan to leave the front bumper bar just like it is.
Don Russell Thanks! What do you mean leave it like it is? I could see adding a winch someday, but beyond that, there’s not much more I plan to do. I could see doing high clearance fender cuts at some point, but I’m happy with it as is for the time being.
Caleb Kerr Yesh I should have explained more. Sorry . Yes are you adding a winch? I like it they way it is. I like to add one to my 2020 AG Pro. I like it with the Led bar in it. I was planning some Baja LEDs for my Pro but I think this gives the front end a mean look. Did you buy everything thru C4 with the bajadesigns led bar? Also did you do the install or someone else. I know I would need someone else to do it. Thanks dude.
So no lift? And I am guessing the bull bar doesn't interfere with the sensor?
MississipVol lol he answered all your questions. You didn’t watch?
@@s302jzget No he didn't answer the questions. He said the bull bar clears the sensor but not whether it interferes any with its use. I watched it twice and never heard him address whether it had a lift.
Can you Mount a winch behind bumper?
Definitely, I just haven’t yet.
How do you like your RSG sliders? I’m getting them put on tomorrow (10/29/2021) on my 2022 TRD OR-P. I’m thinking of painting my stock wheels bronze. I saw the other Lunar Rock TRD OR on the island with TE37’s in bronze and that colorway looks good.
What gas mileage are you getting after the mods?
Like 12 mpg🥴
@@user-fd8vu2yl1f Will you regear? That should help to get at least 15-16 mpg
@@user-fd8vu2yl1f when it comes to builds like these, it’s more like SPG (Smiles Per Gallon) we don’t care for MPG
I’ve got nearly this exact setup in suspension. I get 17
I want to do 285s too do your tires rub?
Chris Borromeo I believe it matters a lot what your wheel specs are, but with the Method 701s, the shop has to trim a very tiny bit off the flared part of the fender (so small I didn’t even notice they’d done it for a few weeks). So, yes probably some very minimal trimming is recommended. But no body mount chop!
What did you do about the radar?
Orlando Mendoza nothing! It works just fine.
Nice simple and clean looks l love how its looks. If you dont mind how much you spend on the sit up?
Herod Benzie Thank you! We don’t talk finances at the dinner table :). I’ve been able to work some deals here and there which has helped offset the total.
@@CalebKerr just give a hint closer to 2020 Trd Pro Price? I really like your set up
Herod Benzie Truthfully I haven’t actually done the math, but it’d be more than a Pro realistically, but not by a whole lot. But I also like this setup way more than a Pro. I think if you’re going to do anything beyond really basic modifications, getting a TRD Off-Road Premium and modifying makes much more sense than getting a TRD Pro and modifying that because you’d end up getting rid of a lot of the components you’re paying for in the Pro (suspension, wheels, tires).
@@CalebKerr I love your set up. However have you heard of Wescott Designs lift for trd pro? It’s a very inexpensive set up. Like 250$. Another 500$ to install it. Then you get the clearance to get 285’s in a pro (no trimming or BMC required). There are some youtubers posted videos of pros with wescott design ( “702Pro”, “Trail Grid Pro”) and saying it’s amazing. That way you don’t have to get rid of any pro components like the fox shocks. They work as they supposed to. And you get the clearance for 285’s and get to keep all other pro cool stuff.
I am actually so close to pull the trigger on a 4runner and doing a ton of research. First I thought I would get the new 2020 Venture trim which is basically the Off-Road blacked out version then put Icon stage two and 285’s like yours. Later I found the videos of Wescott design and realized I can actually get a Pro and still run 285’s with no issues according to the youtube reviews I found. That way I get Pro skids, JBL sounds with 15 speakers, cool pro grill, and the fox shocks. And it seems it is cheaper than getting a Off-Road and modify. I’m not saying one is better than the other. Because I honestly don’t know. Im here to learn from real 4runner owners like you. So I can make a better decision which 4runner to get. So what do you think of the pro+ the wescott lift vs Off-Road + Icon setup in terms of value? TIA
@@lcorr090k6 I hope you go through with it, I’ve had so much fun modifying (and driving!) mine. I would highly recommend getting an Off-Road Premium if you’re going to modify it. A lot of the differences you get on a Pro are easily gotten aftermarket, and you will pay a hefty premium for that Pro badge. It seems like most (not all) people who get Pros keep them fairly stock, and ORP people (like me) will modify more. Also, funny enough, I shot the photos of the Venture Edition for Toyota when they launched it last year. It’s a great trim!
In regards to your lift question, I personally would stead away from spacer type lifts. The Westcott description says specifically that it’s “not a spacer lift” but I feel like that’s maybe just a technicality. It seems to be a body lift where it’s just raising the height of the body, which would help with tire clearance, but it doesn’t provide additional clearance for obstacles on the ground. I did want a more functional lift so I went with new suspension, but if you feel that the stock ground clearance is fine, and want bigger tires, something like Westcott could be an option. I’d have to do more research on it specifically to have more of an opinion on if it’s good or not.
Did you have issues with the sensors after lifting? Thanks
Paul Mercado nope!
I did Paul, did you too?
@@takeitsleazy6508 I just added 2 inch lift at the front and 1.5 in the rear. I had no issues so far. how much lift you have?
@@paulmercado328 my kit says 0-3.5 but it’s only 2” in the front and it’s made the tss go bad
How is icon any feedback from anyone would be much appreciated vs say kings and fox?
I’m really happy with them and have no complaints at all, but also can’t really provide a comparison to King or Fox because I don’t have them. The new suspension made such a huge difference for daily driving, it totally eliminates the nose dive when braking and body roll.
Thanks I am looking at this for my 4runner.
Cool 10k in upgrades
With a much better outcome than paying $10k more for a stock TRD Pro IMO.
Caleb Kerr totally agree!
Does you c4 lopro bumper negatively effect your adaptive cruise control radar sensor on the grill.
Neomaxi Zumdweebee Doesn’t effect it at all!
what size spare and where is it located?
runNride full size spare mounted underneath! It sits slightly lower than the stock one does. If I was doing hard wheeling, I’d probably want to temporarily put it on the roof, but for daily driving, it works fine.
@@CalebKerr makes sense. Really appreciate what you did in this video. It's how I think I am going to set up my ride.
Why use an expensive yeti to store that equipment?
Because I already had it.
