- Garage update & mod summary after 5 months and 4000 miles. Building a versatile camping SUV for overland trips in the western US. Goal was a light and reliable build with the best components and parts for my needs. King Suspension, RCI Sliders and Skids, Warn Winch with Factor55 fair lead and flatlink, Hefty Fabworks Aluminum low pro front bumper. Rigid Industries SAE Foglights, Prinsu Rack, Stealth Custom Series SCS Wheels, BFG K02 tires 285/70/17.
Getting around 19-20 MPG on long highway drives. 18-18.5 when it gets hilly.
At the end of the video I keep saying miles per hour. I meant to say miles per gallon. 🤙🏼
yah 😉 we noticed 😁
Hahaha, it's okay. We will forgive you. Can you let us know where you purchase the rims for your tires, King suspension, and the dual swing bumper? My family and I go camping at least 4 times a year so it would be nice to save some fuel as well.
The rims are from SCS Steath Custom Series. The suspension is from Filthymotorsports.com, and the rear bumper is from Expedition One in Utah. I'll be doing a video on the rear dual swing bumper -it was installed a week ago.
@@gabeah thank you. I can't wait to see the next video on your modifications. I have done a lot of research on mods and they don't have great fuel economy. So hopefully yours will.
@@yanglu9555 Do as he said, what ever you choose, make sure it is strong, but lightweight. It will save you not only MPG but repairs from over loading as well.
Best vehicle out there, still completely built in Japan in the same plant the Land cruise is produced.I finally saved enough to get a 2021 and couldn't be happier.I can't wait to mod it up a bit. Your build turned out nice.
Absolutely like your vehicle!!! I have a 2015 4Runner. first brand new vehicle I ever boughten. never will sell it. best vehicle I've ever owned!!
I have a 2019 TRD off road I use 93 octane gas & I’m getting 16 to 17 mpg, on the interstate I’m getting 18 to 19 mpg on the interstate. Also using the TRD air filter. I have the kings suspension 2.5 series (w) non adjustable reservoirs. Also upgraded from the 600lbs coil springs to 700lbs springs. Gives you an 200lbs for extra weight for bumper, winches, etc.
I hope you like plagiarism because I am going to set mine up just like this :)
Hell yeah
Me too. Sweet ride. I was looking to get a voodoo blue but I'm really liking this grey color now.
Very nice! Love the height, overall stance and the SCS wheels look great. Realistic daily driver that will meet your over landing needs.
I absolutely love your rig. This is how i plan to build mine. I wish you happy adventures.
Lol “rig”
I agree about adding weight to your rig making it perform less. A lot of people who say they dont care about adding so much armor just doing for the hype in my opinion.
I personally think they do it because they are idiots. Rich and poor alike. They do not do their homework, they are lazy and do not care about how much extra stress they are putting on their rigs and ultimately ruining them for themselves and the next owner(s).
Very smart to save weight, I’ve never subscribed to this loading up of steel everywhere.
Very nice 4Runner!
Love what you have done to your 4runner!!!!
Interesting. 1st off, what you purchased is a 2018 TRD Off Road "Premium" 4Runner. There are countless people that put these videos up and label what they have incorrectly. I have a 2018 TRD Off Road 4Runner. Not a "Premium". You were 100% correct not to go for the TRD Pro. Would have been waste of money to go to the next level then strip away what they already did. The #1 thing to change on what you and I purchased is the tires hands down. To keep this short, your choices and reasons for them, are worth peoples consideration here. Think about how one wants to use the vehicle and modify it wisely.
Hey, thanks for the video, man. I wasn't buying it at first, but then you mentioned your 90% windshield tint. I could really use that in Arizona, and if you were able to pull that off in California, I shouldn't have a problem here. Found a guy who does a great job with ceramic window tint, which is the best you can get right now as far as radiation block. Great looking truck!
Rommel Rivera yeah, the tint helps with uv and heat.. which part weren’t you buying? Lol
@@gabeah Oh, don't mind me. lol. It was the part about the TRD Off Road being tough to find and then getting a great deal at invoice. Maybe that's true in California (which is where I came from, btw; I still own a condo in the East Bay). I got my 2019 4R TRD Pro in Scottsdale for 3K under MSRP. The guy who sold it to me told me that he had never sold a TRD Pro under MSRP. It had 4 miles on it. But who cares? These are great trucks, and yours looks awesome! Can't wait to finish upgrading mine.
awesome build
Great feedback/suggestions on the TRD Pro
He was dead on. If you want to do modifications to your vehicle, save the $ and buy the TRD Off Road model. Put that extra money back into your personal modifications. The Pro is meant for those that don't want to do anything to their rigs and just accept it as good enough.
Good point on not getting the compression knob for the shocks!
two years later, and still no regrets. i wouldn't change a thing with the compression and rebound damping.
It's looks awesome, I can't wait to see the rear bumper!
Great video and inspiration for my 4 runner that i am buying this month
Very nice setup. Looks like it is very capable. Thanks for sharing the details.
I think I just feel in love with your rig. Fantastic setup and looks badass
Nice I have the same exact one, just got it, going with a 275/70/17 BFG at's don't want to trim
I've read that 275s don't rub. You should be good, enjoy your rig!
paw crawl Owens do you have pictures of you rims with the 275/70/17?
@@tzarate2919 if I knew how to send them on RUclips
Looks awesome man. I have one just like it. Except it is a '15 with the 4.0. I like those wheels. Look great with that graphite metallic grey paint..
Love the color of your rig! Nice mods too.
Don’t do canyon lands is huge pretty cool but overall it takes FOREVER to get from place to place. You also have to drive on the edge of thousand foot cliffs so yeah.
Beautiful build, love the roof rack
Great video! Awesome! Great truck! Beautiful! Enjoy! 👍😎
I am definitely cloning this one.
Really love it.!! I'm saving up now, I prob looking for 2020 offroad premium :D
Awesome build and great review brah!🤙🏽
Fuck yes this guy proves my point! Why buy a trd pro Tacoma 4Runner tundra when your going to upgrade the suspension! I got a trd Tacoma off road with icon suspension with crawl control etc I don’t need no leather seats trd pro logo etc all that worthless thing in the pro.
I love this!
Man this thing looks great 👍🏼
Sounds like you were describing the kdss with the handling
No, i was describing the difference from stock to King, but what I am describing technically is damping and the valve settings set by King. Excellent suspension.
Love it got one same color I like this look
Great video, very thorough. I'm also looking at doing a 4Runner Overland build and agree completely with you on keeping things light. I've also watched a lot of videos where guys say they regret not paying enough attention to the weight of all their accessories and end up with a heavy over weight sluggish and poorly handling vehicle.
How has your power, acceleration and braking been affected by the larger tires? Also, I've heard some complaints about the factory cruise control and am curious how the larger tires have affected the cruise controls performance on the highway? Thanks in advance.
could not agree more. i have a few buddies going through this with their Tacomas. they've added thousands of pounds and they hate the way the vehicl drives, and they get 11mpg.. lol
Wow! very, very clean 4Runner!!!
Very nice. How about listing your upgrade mods on the video description to help us all copy your setup :)
Do you think the reason the BMC was necessary was due to 17x8.5s at a -10mm offset? Of course at the end of the day it's the 285s but I know a couple of folks who've managed to get them underneath with little to no lift using the stock Trail/TRDOR wheels. The favorite tagline is "All 4runners are slightly different" but I've never subscribed to that level of tolerances except once the mods start bolting on. I just find it unusual that you went with that much lift, aftermarket UCAs, added +Caster and still had to BMC. Worth it though as that extra .5" on the wheel really lets those 285s stretch out. Also love the coated bead lock. I've been flipping between the FN Pros or the TRD Forged as well as 275s or 285s and I think seeing the fact you've coated that puts the TRDs well ahead of the FNs.
jmike I landed at about 2.5-2.75” lift in the front. I just think it’s the tires, I don’t see the spacing making enough difference to have avoided the BMC. I will say I leaned heavily towards doing things correctly, so not only did I want absolutely no rubbing, I wanted a bit of clearance at full lock for tire flex. Some people are okay living w mild rubbing at full lock in reverse etc.., but not me. I did not cut corners. A BMC is only about $250, so well worth it in my opinion.
gabeah great video! I plan on buying the exact same wheels for my 5th gen. How bad was the rub prior to BMC? Just in reverse at full lock? I’m running a 3/2 lift with spc UCAs as well, so should be fairly similar in regards to rubbing.
Great looking rig
thx man
looks damn good
Your correct big time on weight . makes a truck no fun to drive .
Awesome truck. I don’t get how some of you guys are getting 18 miles to the gallon and more on those trucks. Mine is stock height with 275 BFG‘s and I’m getting 16 1/2 mostly highway. I’m not too heavy on the pedal either. If I’m driving city it’s more like 16. That’s calculated at the pump and my electronic gauge.
I don't want to sound like a dick, but the chances are, you have loaded down your rig with too much weight. Purchased my rig brand new. On the highway I was getting 20-22MPG. OVER the factory sticker #'s. I was beside myself. And I am not the lightest foot on the accelerator. Then I put on my White Knuckle rock sliders. About 300LBS added to the vehicle weight. I now get about 19 on the highway. 20 on the longer downhills. lol Bottom line is, weight and drag reduce efficiency. I suspect once I get off the factory tires that came with it and put on something with more meat like K02s, I will have more drag and probably drop down to 18-19. I travel light. I am a minimalist. I do not need drawers, refrigerators, roof top tents, awnings roof racks full of recovery gear, etc. And that does affect why I am still in a reasonable MPG range for what it is.
I can tell from this video you are a great person. Save some p for the rest of us!
Cant wait to get one myself..
@ 2:38 i know a lot of folks that run their kings to 3” of lift up front and they’ve had it on for years with no problems 🤔
Nice 4Runner! Since I am in the Bay Area to as well. What shop did you have the suspension installed? And is that the same shop that did the body mount chop?
MikeR sorry, I am not in the Bay Area. I am from LA.
looks so good man and great video good info for people who are doing research. question, how wide are your SCS wheels? and what is the offset? Was just wondering why you needed a body mount chop for 285s because normally body mount chop isn't necessary but wanna hear from someone who actually lives it.
Dereck Nielsen Hi Dereck, glad you found the video helpful. in my opinion, there is no way to do a build correctly without doing a BMC. I place a premium on doing things correctly, and not cutting corners and “getting by”. When you start doing a build you’ll see what I mean. Double check the scs site, but I think it’s -10mm and 7.5 or 8”. Either way, I think there is a lot of questionable info out there around BMCs specifically with 285s. Everyone I’ve met had to get a bmc to completely eliminate rubbing in all scenarios, but one guy said you don’t need it -he also rubbed when in full lock in reverse and “lives with it”. There are definitely variances vehicle to vehicle and final ride height that account for differences in opinion. For king suspension, no spacers, SCS wheels and class C BFG KO2s, I absolutely needed a BMC and to adjust castor during alignment. 🤙🏿
Great video, it's nice to see someone else who's into backpacking who is very weight cautious. What load springs did you end up going with? I know you mentioned you planned on adding a front/rear bumper.
Old Man Emu OME-2898 440lb
Love 4Runners. My girl wants to lift hers lol
Awesome!!!
wow nice
Thanks for the video, I like the way you went with your mods. Did you find the 2.5" sufficient while wheeling? What's your favorite mod?
damn thats weird that youre getting 17-20 mpg. im getting 15 mpg and im stock on the trail edition. Im pretty light on the gas as well.
Young Oorah the more trips I do, the more I realize I got that mileage because I was in a 55-60 mph convoy and on flattish terrain ! I just did 500 miles r/t to Lone Pine and got 16.8 averaging 78 mph. Tons of elevation -like 6000’ too. Still better than your 15, but not as high when going 60 on flat roads going south into Mexica... all these are highway miles of course. What psi are your tires?
I'm.getting 15mpg on stock sized at3w wildpeak 4x4 sr5p 2015
Where did you send off the Ray 10 beads to get them chemically treated? Beautiful rig by the way
Justin Soulier just found a local place that did industrial plating and black oxide coating - basically had to call around. I don’t recall the name, somewhere east of east LA. Maybe West Covina or somewhere out there. Took 1 hour and like 20 bucks I think it was
Great walk through, incredibly appreciative. What was your over all lift in the front vs the back?
it's roughly about 2.75" front, 3" in back depending of if it has a full tank or full load for a trip.
I see the front camera did you go with anytime backup? That's what we have and we love it
Did the rear shocks provide the lift or did you throw new springs on? Thanks
D Hubbalicious both, but the coils provide the lift. Details all in the video
Nice video, I got 18 T4R ORP with KDSS, installed TRD pro suspension and rims and KO2 275/70/17. Lastmonth got the king 243A and 279A and camburg UCA in garage waiting for install...Quick question:Do I need do the body mount chop if I want put 285/70/17 tire with trd rim? Thanks
Joseph lee for 285s, I had to do a BMC, remove mud flaps and set the castor during the alignment so the wheels were pushed forward in the wheel well, all with +2.75” of lift in the front. Just make sure you work w a shop that does lifted Toyota’s regularly, and you’ll be set 🤙🏿
What's the height with the roof rack without anything on it? (I'm concerned for the airport parking height restriction)... It's beautifully done btw.
Takashi Kusui overall height is around 6’2” so far I have not had a problem, but I have been very close to beams in certain garages. I’ve been driving around with the gun case on the roof for 2 months, still no issues.. overall with the gun case, height must be 6’5 ish. No problems, but I’m careful
@@gabeah - thank you - it is more lower than I thought!
Do you any reco - shop in bay area?
@@TakaKusui I'd be interested in finding a Toyota 4x4 shop in the Bay Area, as well. Please let me know if you find one.
As everyone else says... great vid. Dud you ever get the rear bumper? Pic? Post to ig if you have?
Take a look at my other 4Runner vid from Alabama hills, the bumper is in that vid🤙🏿
This is a great video. Question - I have a regular 4Runner SR5. Am thinking of doing some mods. Is it worth it or do you really need the crawl control, etc. on the TRD?
In my opinion, the vehicle is very capable when in 4 low, without crawl control. The more important feature is a rear locker which I don’t think the sr5 has, but whether you need it depends on the terrain you’re driving. I suspect for many of us, 4 high is about 95% of off road driving. Crawl control and the locker comes into play on more technical terrain, but we’ve all been n those scenarios where the rear locker maybe wasn’t expected to be needed, but was due to slippery but not “technical “ terrain. Your sr5 is super capable, especially if you install a good all terrain tire and carry a set of max trax.
@@gabeah Fantastic, thanks!
I feel the crawl control is overrated. I plan on getting a SR5 premium and add a mechanic limited slip diff. No need to turn on and off a locker. A posi will engage and disengage as needed on its own.
Did you have to do any type of brake line extensions with the King Suspension lift? Nice video.
no sir, good question, stock lines work fine at stock length.
BEAUTIFUL. HOW MUCH WAS THE SUSPENSION AND LABOR...
?>
chewchew74 $4K all in
gabeah where did you get it purchased and installed??
boostwizzard I ordered the suspension system from Ben at Filthy motorsports out of CO. They have a great RUclips channel as well, very educational. The install was done at a local suspension shop here in west LA.
gabeah yes I know about filthy motorsports was looking to get raptor coil overs at the time, which shop in West LA I'm in the vicinity since they did such a good job I like to check them out
boostwizzard I would take it to Jimahajer in La Habra. They are a Toyota focused 4x4 shop and King retailer. They dialed in the height and helped me with some other random stuff at a very reasonable cost.
Nice 4runner. How is the wind noise with the riffle box on the roof?
francowj zero wind noise. Also zero when I have the rotopax and maxtrax mounted. See my other video for that setup. Very happy it’s completely quiet.
@@gabeah that's awesome news. Thank you. Just saw both videos. Your 4runner looks awesome!! I was just at Alabama hills a few weeks ago. Fist time, amazing place. I stopped at the trona pinnacles on the way back. Check it out if you haven't. Free camping as well and they have a pit toilet.
Did you have to cut and modify the stock bumper to fit the new one. Looks great I just got a 19 off-road looking at mods already lol!
Phoenix 98 yes, requires trimming and modifications for front and rear bumpers. if you don’t need a winch, you really don’t need a bumper in my opinion.
Love it I want one it’s a bad Jose
Sick rig! what’s your exact suspension details?
This is awesome, do you happen to have an exact part number for your king suspension?
There is no part number - it’s a custom built to order suspension from Filthy Motorworks. Spring rates, valving preference, vehicle weight based on your exact build, are all considered and then it’s custom ordered from king suspension.
@@gabeah gotcha, thanks for the reply!
Ordered the King suspension, if I stay with the stock wheels, is it still necessary to replace the upper control arms?
Bowman Gray You’re going to love that suspension it’s incredible. I believe The stock wheels have no impact on whether or not you need to change the control arms it’s really about the control arm angle that changes because of the extra ride height. The stock wheels will work fine, but the stance won’t be as wide as if you move to spacers or wheels with more offset.
Did you op for the extended travel? Why and why not? I am debating if I should get extended travel.
Ricky Yang I’m overland and camping focused, less rock crawling and extreme terrain. Simply don’t need a ton of additional travel on a 4Runner at least for my purposes. I have 285s and 2.75” of lift. Pretty capable.
Great post! I have the same 4runner, color and all. Can the prinsu 3/4 hold a RTT?
SurelySkeptic _ yes, but the larger tents might be tight.
What Springs did you use up front? I have King with Res as well, and I've a LoPro bumper and warn winch about 150lbs extra plus your sliders and skids, and I get crazy front end dip. I had the standard 500? lbsprings and just received some 650 lbs but have not yet installed. I do have the OME +440lb rear springs and I have the same sliders and skids, and I still have too much rake. Im gonna swap out to the +220 even though I have a rear fridge and drawer system.
sounds like you need more preload on your fronts, or to go to 650s. i stayed with 550s up front and added some preload for about 2.75" of lift up front. I just had an Expedition One dual swing rear bumper with rear tire carrier mounted, and my rear is just a hair lower than the front now, so I need to go to the OME +440s. I currently have the +220lbs on there, and they are just too soft with this rear bumper setup, especially once I have jerry can full and gear in the back.
I'm looking for pretty much your exact model and trim, I'm wondering what your thoughts are on the Toyota KDSS system? Would it interfere with suspension mods in the future?
it hasn't with mine, my truck is KDSS with pretty capable suspension/lift. good luck with the truck!
Nice build! I’m doing one similar to yours. Are your rock sliders aluminum or metal? Do you know how much they weigh roughly?
Sliders are steel. Skids are aluminum. The RCI website has exact weights of everything.
Ok cool that’s what I thought.
Awesome rig, who did you send your bolts to for the black oxidation?
Michael Chang I don’t recall, I just called around and found a shop in East LA county that did them while I wait. Google black oxide coating or related searches
Do you remember about what you spent on the suspension setup?
David Z I think 3800 in parts, 500 install, 300 body chip
Let me know when it’s for sale
Did you have KDSS on this rig? Thx, nice truck love it
L W yes and thanks !
Can You give me some measurements from center tire to fender lip front and back?? Looks like you have a lot of front threads showing. I have the SPC uca as well. I've got the BFG ATs with 1/4 spacers and I get rubbing. Not to mention the folks did an awful job with suspension. I still have + camber and may need a body chop even with 275s. THis is on a 2017 TRD Pro.
Stephan Hatch Sorry late, but front ground to fender is about 38.5”, rear 39 5/8” .
You are rubbing because of the spacers. Get rid of them.
It's the spacers
dream car; nice man!
Man I get 15mpg and I'm easy on gas, Mostly city driving 4x4 sr5p Falken stock sized tires
mine was 12.8 after 3 months use, a year later it went up to 14.8. jealous of those reporting 17+
Did you install the suspension yourself? If so, what’s the difficulty level?
Todd Ramos I had it installed.
20 degree angle RCI sliders?? Thx trying to order some now.
20 degree indeed! Very pleased, but off roading def sand blasts them over time and I’ve repainted them once so far..
@@gabeah Thx for quick reply!!
I’ll buy you’re old TRD skid plate if it’s for sale!! Used or scratched! If it’s for sale!
sorry, this is a TRD Off Road, not the Pro. I think the Pros came with the skid you''re referencing.
Did you upgrade your king springs from 550 to 700s? I didn't hear you mention what lb spring you were running. I am running a cutout front steel bumper with a 12k winch and some CBI Skids and the 550s are not cutting it for me.
No, the goal was to minimize weight, so there is a 10k on winch w synthetic rope, a mostly aluminum front bumper and RCI aluminum skids. I did not need to change front coils. After 5 years I wouldn’t change a thing. Steel parts are unnecessary weight for my purposes living and off roading here in CO.
How are you getting that MPG? Mines stock and doesn’t get that...
depends on the trip and elevation change, but i'm getting like 17.1 these days when I drive 70-80mph highway, and don't get crazy charging up long gradual hills.
Sick ride! What size wheels do you have? 17”x8.5” or 17”x9” ?
Whatever SCS made that had the 10mm offset. I think 9, but check w them
What’s tire size and lift are you using?
Won laps Montreal it’s all in the video man.
Trying to build my car like your car lol, can you send me the link of bumper please?
Viet Nguyen hefty fabworks makes it. Southern style off-road also has a very similar one.
Did you lift the rear at all? Or is this just leveled?
Ludo K watch the video, literally everything is covered.
gabeah I watched it. Multiple times. You said 2.5 inch, and I want to make sure you’re referring to “lift” and not diameter of the shock.
@@ludok1551 nice, thanks for watching! actually both are correct, lol. it has a 2.5-2.75" lift all the way around, and it has 2.5" shocks. on the rear, the ride height is set by the rear coil stiffness and length rather than playing with preload on the coilover. i went with the heavy OME rear coils with +440lb rating -netted me a hair over 2.5" after my rear bumper was installed. my other video in alabama hills shows the bumper and i think i talk about the springs if you're interested.
What's the offset on your wheels? They have a nice perfect stance.
take a look at the SCS website, but it think it's -10mm
I love the aluminum front bumper, can you provide a link?
check with Hefty Fabworks or Southern Style offroad. don't quote me, but i believe they had a licensing deal for a while where Hefty was making aluminum winch bumpers for SSO, but I think they stopped making them for SSO after a while and then there was a fallout due to production capacity at hefty. i do recall the weight difference was pretty big steel vs aluminum. worth seeking out.
17 to 19 miles per hour, on the highway ??? You was really crawling, lol
How many turns on front shocks driver and passenger sides? Thank you Great stance
been a few years, and was adjiusted a few times so I don't recall.. highy depends on winch and bumper which i have both..
That king set up is rad but you need to find a way to isolate that rub point on the reservoir line.
sandman503 not sure what you’re seeing, but must be a smudge or shadow, suspension has been on about a year, nothing even really comes close to those lines. That’s part of the benefit of a custom, vehicle specific system I suppose..🤙🏿
Santa Monica Airport?
Awesome Rig!! What’s your lift set up ?
it's all in the video my man. literally everything
So where’s your spare now with the larger tires?
Max Daddy dual swing rear bumper with tire carrier. I’ll do another video soon now that it’s installed.
Why cant the spare go under? Is it because it is to big or because of the new suspension?
// Great video, any wind noise from the roof rack?
ran tor thanks, wind noise was a big concern, but fortunately there is no wind noise at all however the rack has been loaded. My loads have been totally empty rack, gun case as in the video, and gun case, maxxtrax, Rotopax 4 gallon. No noise in any configuration. 🤙🏿
// Awesome, thanks again
Stock headlights or any led upgrades besides the rigid fog lights?
Chris Bahr I upgraded my lows -makes a big difference off road at night
gabeah which lows did you end up going with for the upgrade?
Chris Bahr hi Chris, I went with xenondepot LED lows. Those with led fogs and you can be going really fast in the back country and have all the lighting you need to see way out in the distance even at speed.. I’ll be all over Utah and the Rockies the next 10 days, if I can make a good lighting video, I’ll post something 🤙🏼. Btw, I now have rigids in the rear bumper, so great for camp setup, night rock crawling and just crazy lumens behind you. Can’t drive with the rears tho, they blind the shit out of anyone behind you. You can kinda see them in my other video on this truck.
gabeah perfect thank you so much love the setup.
