    Personally I think a combination of outside and inside out tracking complimenting each other is where VR will end up. Both have their strengths and weaknesses, but together they can balance out those weaknesses, and if necessary they can work on their own to a lesser extent. As for wireless, we've seen that it's possible with the vive wireless addon, and once eye tracking and foveated rendering are properly solved, I'm assuming it would be little enough data to transfer even for higher resolution/refresh rate headsets.
    In short, I can't wait for the future of VR! It has so much potential, and hopefully it will be realized soon.

      Microsoft did it first, and they have done it very well. Windows Mixed Reality (WMR) headsets have been out for 2 years now, can be used with any game that the HTC Vive can be, have much less Screen Door effect, higher resolution, cost much less, and are portable, as in "open up your laptop in a new place for the first time, plug in the headset, spend about 30 seconds tracing your boundary if you want a full play-space, and then launch whatever Steam game / app you were going to use.
      I know Linus gave a bad review to the Acer version of the Microsoft WMR baseline spec, stating that he couldn't tell who it was for. But that was at the $400 price point. They never sold at that price. They sold at $200, often less. I got mine for free with a laptop purchase in December of 2017.
      The Samsung Odyssey (+) has a higher-res OLED pentile display, and was much more justified being at the $400 price point.
      But the portability of these things- not needing to install anything in your living room, or wherever you take it is king. I've taken mine to a party at friends' houses many times, because it's entertaining watching people flail at Beat Saber.

    I still prefer outside-in tracking with steam lighthouses. Depending on the application there is a huge noticable difference in tracking of the Oculus Rift s / Quest vs. the HTC Vive or Valve Index. Also, it's not such a big deal to spend 15 minutes installing the lighthouses *once*. After that you can forget them and you don't even have to worry about the lighting like you have for inside-out tracking.

    • @pkilljoy5797
      @pkilljoy5797 5 лет назад +10

      Its like ps4 vs switch. You could plug it in and be tethered, but why would you? The convenience of using it anywhere outshines anything tethered. And fwiw, as an owner of both the vive and quest, the tracking is identical minus occlusion spots (they both have them, dont kid yourself)
      For example, people usually dont bring this up but since the vive is tethered to a PC you likely have a PC desk / bed in your room. Vive will struggle under the desk, or other furniture where quest will not.

      About the occlusion problem under a table: Why would you want to sit on your desk? Just move the chair in the middle of the playspace and it will work perfectly. And if you got a steering wheel you won't be needing tracked controlers anyway and the HMD will track just fine from the side.

    • @raineaeternal
      @raineaeternal 5 лет назад

      @Frederick Röders The thing about VR is that its supposed to be immersive. Quest doesnt do that. Its heavy and bulky, in addition to the fact that you still need controllers, that in fact, still need buttons to funtion properly (E.G. throwing things still need a physical button on most VR headsets. The only headset to truly get this right is the Valve Index, which is also supposedly the most comfortable headset thanks to its headstrap. And that you saying people didnt rush out to buy a Vive back when it came out? Thats due to how much is cost back then. 899 US Dollars for a VR headset was too much of an investment for people. And a 399 USD pricetag for a Rift S today, is still that. VR is expensive. Quest is merely a middlepoint to market. Im sure Facebook and Oculus will launch a high end VR headset again that people will actually buy.
      Bringing VR to the masses with good fidelity and good immersion is hard.
      Personally, VR was a hard investment for me, i had to go out of my way to buy a 1st gen headset used to even get into VR properly.

    I appreciate the mention of outside-in headsets in a video about how inside-out tracking is saving VR.
    For me, and I know I'm not alone, VR is about the most immersive experiences and highly immersive experiences that simply cannot be had in the real world.
    The Valve Index is certainly the best at offering the most immersive experience in a consumer package, so that's the one I'm currently enjoying.
    One day, I'd like a mobile inside-out tracked HMD that has all the visual and auditory qualities of a great tethered HMD; preferably one that can also be tethered to a powerful PC to offer those high fidelity experiences when not on the go, so I don't feel the need to buy two and probably end up just sticking with a PC VR headset like I have up to this point.

    Steam VR with base stations is better. My index is way better than any inside out headset even with 1.0 base stations (2.0 are sub milimeter accurate with a wider fov). The quest is great for mobile VR, but for the desktop it’s not as important. 2.0 base stations are more lenient too so you can just put them on tables or something. Line of sight is not a big deal because PC VR has a short range and you need a rectangle either way. As for the sensors, set the mounts on your walls. Steam should make it remember your boundaries but I don’t think it’s nearly as bad as people say. More important is that the limits of inside out tracking will be integrated into gaming which means games can’t be as complex or relaxed if it’s bad enough.
    The Quest is great. Not as good as PC and it never will be, but it’s nice for taking to parties or for smaller applications. As long as people don’t try and pit them against each other.

    I used the Rift S for two days and returned it. The reason is that I wont go on a closed store like the Facebook store to buy VR games. Using steam is hard because the camera passthrough when making sure you stand in a save spot with space or looking for controllers is hidden in a setting in the Oculus VR overlay. Let us start about setup. You start the Oculus VR software - the headset starts with only a usb 3.0 and Displayport cable. Then you start Steam VR if the game is on steam or a modded older game that of cource should use the steam VR foundation. It may crash. Playing games that are reconized by Oculus will have a reset camera function to center your view to the the or sit or stand up and not be 3m tall. The overlay by oculus can give you passthrough to see the world but is hidden under the clock tab. When you start a Steam game like Audio Shield. After every game the VR can crash. Steam VR stutters extremely because Oculus is not well supported as I knew but is even unusable. Starting a Steam VR game or a modded game will result into the Valve VR overlay replacing the Oculus VR overlay so you can not use the cammeras view to see the world like with a button press on a HTC / Valve controller or Valve Index. The controllers cant be turned off with removable AA batteries (1 each controller). The the inner hand button is often pressed because it is a disaster of a design. The tracking is bad but ok and once steam tried to do the VR setup that only works with Steam roomscale laser thingy.
    TL;DR Use a Vive 1 if you can get over the bad resolution. Oculus Controller su***. Valve Controller can can break but is better. All mods for old games on earth work better on HTC Vive with lasers and original Valve controller than anything from oculus and you still might be able to hack support for the Oculus Store for Vive.

    Outside in tracking is significantly better than inside out.
    With outside in, you don't lose tracking when your controllers move behind you, under you, etc. With inside out tracking you also cannot have tracked objects or full body tracking because the HMD simply cannot see the entire room to track objects behind it.

    I had purchased a samsung odyssey plus Windows MR VR headset and I had lots of occlusion problems when reaching in a different direction that i was looking. it was a FANTASTIC experience for sim racing and flight simulation using external controls (a wheel and pedal set and a HOTAS respectively) but the touch controllers lost tracking enough to be annoying. outside in tracking via steamvr's lighthouse technology (which is technically assisted inside out with the sensors on the headset and the controllers) or oculus' webcam "sensors" was a significantly better experience. I hypothesise that as the technology improves and gets less expensive, they'll just start putting full dedicated 6dof camera-based inside-out trackers on the controllers as well as the headsets with high refresh cameras to do indipendent controller tracking but that day isn't here yet. until then steasmvr 2.0, while a bit on the expensive (valve index, index controllers, and base stations currently go for something like $1200, it's still the best way to play vr titles today... controller occlusion isn't something i can live with, nor is the low resolution, low refresh, low poly count exeperiences on the quest. i'm sure the tech will improve, but until you can cram a 2080 ti and a 9900k into a headset, it just isn't going to happen.

      that's interesting, I play beat saber quite a lot and with the WMR, I never had any problems, I could wear my glasses underneath the Lenovo Explorer and the tracking fov for the controllers is actually a bit bigger than your fov inside the headset (at least it seemed like that to me) and with a well lit room, I never had any tracking problems whatsoever.

      Yeah, I have the Asus one. I mean, I can get my glasses in there as well but they get foggy INSTANTLY. As for lighting, I'm noticing that WMR needs more light than the Rift S. With two lights in my room it worked well, but sometimes gave me boundary errors in the dark corners. My new Rift doesn't have that issue and even seems to work with just one of those lights on. You tried a display model? I'm guessing since stores are full of lights and shiny surfaces it was throwing the headset off.

    Short comings of outside-in and inside-out tracking aside, the real problem with VR right now is content. For one thing it's being segregated and put into different walled garden's through the closed off ecosystem approach, which makes it even more difficult for large publishers to be willing to risk the cash investing in a project that is only available in one place and catering to a tiny market. Right now though is the perfect time for Valve to start telling us about their new VR games. PC gaming desperately needs some good news right now, and with all the Epic Game Store shenanigans going on, this would be the time to remind people why we all fell in love with Valve decades ago.
