Not worth the time if you're already taking it to the shop. You could always accidently break a clip if your not careful. Shops usually charge by the hour anyway. So most places probably would do it for free as part of a yearly service.
1. These are Xenon headlights, so they are high voltage, not just 12V. 2. Headlights need proper alignment when installing. A garage usually uses specialized tools to do this quickly and correct - so you are not one of these morons who are blinding all oncoming traffic. 3. He clearly is not interested in doing the work himself. 4. The interactions with the mechanics are a main component of this channel, why would he want to get rid of that?
No one ever trades a car because it's run well. Keep repeating that until you get it. OF COURSE THEY SOLD IT BECAUSE IT WAS USING OIL.... thanks, Hoovie, for going bankrupt and fixing it for us.
Never liked the idea of a 'coated' aluminum cylinder wall instead of a proper iron sleeve. (just like Chevy Vega) Mercedes has used these for years. If you have a good one, great, if not, OIL BURNER. My uncle had a '72 280SEL that ended up being an oil burner. No sleeves in the aluminum block. He has a re-ring job done ($2000 in the late 70's) as it wasn't TOO bad yet and then traded it off.
Soft cylinder walls with this M113k engine and the later M157 5.5 Biturbo (being more of a problem). Same with BMW S63 engine. The M156 '6.3' was done right with a twin-wire arc spraying process that melts iron/carbon wires and sprays them onto the cylinder walls - resulting in an ultra hard surface.
Believe me Hoovie, I am very experienced with m113. 99 percent of oil consumption in m113 is bad PCV. The final result is unfortunately what happened to you and the very next will be blown head gasket. The PCV stops working correctly as oil is being sent to cylinders, pressure in crankcase increases and carbon buildup causes LSPI damaging the coating. I did rebuild using iron cylinder sleeves. You can also consider darton wet sleeves that will make it literally indestructible. I tried transplant with N/A m113 engine block unfortunately doesn’t work. Coating on this engine is considered really decent, however carbon buildup and old fuel can destroy it pretty easily. Don’t do thicker oil. The only one that works in this m113k is 0w40, for racing use and SLR 5w50 is advised (however you may paradoxically experience higher oil consumption - more pressure in crank and oil drains slower from a pcv drainer).
How would you describe this channel to a friend? A show about dropping cars off at the shop and driving the fixed ones back? I've been watching since the Apollo project 😂
I don't understand these cars. They started off being Russian gangster cars, and now where I live, they are 40-year-old rich wife cars or younger women that can't drive.
on the m113ks there is a nasty o-ring that goes out on the oil pump, with cylinder scoring it's almost certain this is the culprit. make sure it's not that, it's a quite simple fix and most people overlook it on the engine rebuild, it can also cause some weird oil loss issues because of the way it's mounted in the 2-piece oil pan.
@@Chthonian121i have a m113 5.4L myself & i never heard of cylinder wall scoring but i have seen a forum where a person had scored cylinders & someone said that it could be a hot spot in the engine & thats what causes the “silicone aluminum” coating to wear out along the wall leading to scoring.. i believe that it is human error. it is overlooked when removing spark plugs, intake manifold, or s/c to blow compressed air into the crevasses of the object Youre removing to reduce the amount of debris introduced into the combustion chamber..
@@AMGmeisterah shit the man himself, yes you are correct from what I understand and have experienced, the m113/k only has cylinder scoring issues when either the oil pickup tube o-ring has failed or in extreme cases where mileage is very high and the ccv system gets clogged from terrible oil change intervals and usually it's compounded by intense high g driving, any exceptions?

Several of these issues are self inflicted. You have full and complete access to your storage and not a huge collection Why not put everything on trickle chargers, start them all once a month, let the mechanicals warm up, give the AC, electrics and motors a run through.
@jd9119 lots of people do it. Shmee for starters Loads of storage places trickle charge and warm through Dealers. Basically people who don't want hassles or unnecessary bills
Sometimes I wonder if the people that most want a German car have never owned a German car. 12 years ago I bought a Mazda and finally understand that ‘reliability’ thing that friends and family were always telling me about.
I knew a guy who bored out a Porsche Boxster nikaseal (sp) engine and fitted cast-iron rings. That vehicle is still running 15 years later. It'd been through a sewerage flood in Hong Kong.
2:42 Having oil consumption on newer cars is actually common. I have friends with new Renaults (even as a company with bad reputation for reliability) that they all say they were at certified shops and all of the mechanics said that newer cars like Renaults (and probably others) will consume a bit of oil untill their couple of first thousand miles and they will be good afterwards. After these few first thousand miles the engines should stop consuming oil as much and if they still do that means theres a problem. I'm not a car mechanic myself so I can't really verify it on my own but thats what ive been told by them lol.
If you're gonna replace the engine, drive it till it pukes... wasted oil be damned... in fact, it's the perfect time to try some of the many available additives.
You are looking at this all wrong, the G wagon is a blessing, using that much oil negates the need to get it serviced,, fresh oil every week, I've done it, got 500K out of a 4 cylinder engine, never got a service, ever, ran like a dream, pull into the gas station, top up the oil, check the gas.
Alex from Legit Street Cars can help you with a Whipple and upgraded engine for the AMG G. A VRP Whipple, headers, fuel system, polished heads, cams, and rotating assembly for a really fun G.
If you think a quart every 1,000 miles for oil consumption warranty is over-kill.. Subaru covers 1/3 of a quart in 1,200 miles for a new short block. Thankfully they got it under control these days and we rarely do them anymore.
When I read the service bulletins I thought, "This has to be a typo" 😅 Knock on wood, mine's approaching 180k mi with low oil consumption. It's had a steady diet of Mobil 1 its whole life. It's baffling that Subaru lets some of these chronic issues go unaddressed for so long. Vibrating heat shields are what make a Subaru a Subaru! 😂 I love driving it, though.
More fine examples of "prestige" German, Bavarian & Italian motorcars to AVOID at all costs. Unless of course you are in the same financial stratus as Hoovie and can afford to buy someone else's POS car and pour unlimited amounts of money down a rat hole. No offense to Hoovie, I find his videos enlightening & entertaining and an even more cautionary tale about buying used foreign cars. It is not as much fun if he bought an old Yugo and showed all the defects, problems and sheer engineering stupidity but it is hilarious when it is a vehicle that sold for well over 100k USD or more. Hoovie & the Wizard make a great team; keep up the good work guys.👍👍👍
As a towing company (since 1989 🇬🇧) we see a lot of horrors…… the worst in my memory, was a reconditioned engine company we used to fetch and carry for. They simply went to scrap and salvage companies and tore out used engines. No service, no belts……. nothing. Steam clean and swap over. Pot luck. Engine Monkeys was our tag for them. Thankfully, we don’t deal with any now, although the process is still in unhealthy profit I hear, more of the engines from chop shops so I’m told……😥
In Germany some experts see the issue with the M113Ks is with broken catalytic converters. The converters break down and crumble into dust. The dust can then be sucked in through the exhaust valves causing this type of damage. M113s don’t have an Alusil cylinder surface.
I bought an adult owned (from new) Acura Integra LS. Garaged, stock, nice option level, with 117k over 14 years. Not bad. I got this! Well, guy had been driving A LOT originally, but slowed down in retirement, less than 50 miles A WEEK, for the previous 8 months before i bought it. Welp, i drive it 300 miles a WEEK and im enjoying it. Annnnnd it starts eating a quart of oil every tank of gas, about 280-300 miles. Compression good, but, fouling the plug in cylinder 3. Bad rings. Replaced the engine with a JDM B20, and sold the B18B1. Was a great car, but, dont ever think gently used is safe bet!!!
I had a 94 Nissan Micra. 20 years and 130.000 miles without any problems. Most expensive thing I ever had to do was changing it's tires. Unfortunately it got destroyed in a storm. But man...this Micra should cost 200.000 dollars and a Ferrari 20.000 dollars new.
Your vanos problem sounds like a kohlar lawnmower problem, more frequent oil changes will help that , I’m sorry Tyler you bought one that was neglected.
A throwback to Mercedes racing history. I talked to rhe owner of the 1914 LA Mans winning Mercedes. He told me it required a separate mechanic to ride along to constantly feed oil to the engine.
As a Canadian Kansas winters don’t seem bad enough to not drive vehicles for months , I can only think of two videos where I saw snow on the ground and they are currently being stored at an airport so there could be driven on the roads around the airport at least for ten or fifteen minutes. Surprised the Wizard didn’t say anything when Hoovie said he lubed it.
It does get extremely cold in Kansas during the winter, and then there is the salt on the roads as well as the infinite potholes that appear after the snow plows come through. Kansas has one of the worst freeze-thaw cycles in the US so the roads get beat up pretty quickly.
Typically in Canada, it gets cold and stays cold until spring. Midwest US gets the freeze/thaw cycles that destroys roads and the salt usage is terrible. Hoovie has so many vehicles to choose from, why mess up the nicer ones by driving in the winter. He should have battery tenders on each or pull the batteries and connect them all up on one tender. Starting them once every couple of weeks and warming them up helps too.

@@Chthonian121 Yeah I don't wanna dismisses what the car wizard said but in my experiance (7 M113/K powered cars to my name), they do not have cylinder scoring issues like Porsches because they use a different lining that's better lasting. @@Chthonian121 Very rare on M113k compared to say M157/M278 for cylinder wall scoring.

G-Wagons are a maintenance nightmare. With the cylinders that badly scored it is time to get rid of it and stop the bleeding, otherwise it is going to cost you a small fortune.

As a RUclips consumer, there is very little I'm not an expert on.
I started watching Hoovie because I dreamed about owning exotic cars. But the channel has made me start dreaming about owning Toyota Corollas and Honda Accords.
I'm still amazed at this point with all your car experience being around vehicles so much. You can't change your own headlight....
Lol
I thought the same thing. John Ross could change it in his sleep.
You obviously have no clue that you’re watching a man run a business. Fixing the cars himself is not part of his business model.
No one ever trades a car because it's run well. Keep repeating that until you get it. OF COURSE THEY SOLD IT BECAUSE IT WAS USING OIL.... thanks, Hoovie, for going bankrupt and fixing it for us.
Lol
Tyler does this as a business and is doing quite well financially.
Depends on the car. I scored a mint, low mileage Lincoln Towncar for dirt cheap because the old guy quit driving and none of his kids wanted it.
Get the Car Ninja at least a good bottle of Scotch! What a stand up guy
I've had many of these 6 cylinder Mercedes-Benz cars. Never had that happen with 300k plus on them
Soft cylinder walls with this M113k engine and the later M157 5.5 Biturbo (being more of a problem). Same with BMW S63 engine. The M156 '6.3' was done right with a twin-wire arc spraying process that melts iron/carbon wires and sprays them onto the cylinder walls - resulting in an ultra hard surface.
@@AMGmeisterare you saying that all m113k or m113 have soft cylinder walls?
Johnny is such a good fella.
If I've learned anything from this channel, never get a BMW or Mercedes out of warranty.
Mercedes Benz told my sister to buy a Toyota if she wanted a reliable truck.
I mean they started as tough as nails, slow, amazing off road utility vehicles
They also seem popular with exotic dancers
In Germany all these AMGs are arabic and turkish gangster-cars 😂
When incredibly stupid statement, in America, the luxury cars that never go off road. jealous much?
@dzikijohnny No, I'm not, I don't like these cars myself.
Why the acting out, btw?
Be civil, hey.
on the m113ks there is a nasty o-ring that goes out on the oil pump, with cylinder scoring it's almost certain this is the culprit. make sure it's not that, it's a quite simple fix and most people overlook it on the engine rebuild, it can also cause some weird oil loss issues because of the way it's mounted in the 2-piece oil pan.
I'm not sure the G wagon has the 2 pickup oil pan like the E55 did.
That's only SL55 and E55 - G55, S55, and CL55 don't have split oil pan.
@@Chthonian121 in this case the car is from chicago so whoever owned it didnt wait long enough for it to warm up in that type of climate
@@AMGmeisterah shit the man himself, yes you are correct
from what I understand and have experienced, the m113/k only has cylinder scoring issues when either the oil pickup tube o-ring has failed or in extreme cases where mileage is very high and the ccv system gets clogged from terrible oil change intervals and usually it's compounded by intense high g driving, any exceptions?

2:42 Having oil consumption on newer cars is actually common. I have friends with new Renaults (even as a company with bad reputation for reliability) that they all say they were at certified shops and all of the mechanics said that newer cars like Renaults (and probably others) will consume a bit of oil untill their couple of first thousand miles and they will be good afterwards. After these few first thousand miles the engines should stop consuming oil as much and if they still do that means theres a problem. I'm not a car mechanic myself so I can't really verify it on my own but thats what ive been told by them lol.

I know the newer M278 V8 motors are prone to cylinder scoring but never knew the M113k had the same issue.
I like how the wizard has retained his high school locker room humor L O L
If you're gonna replace the engine, drive it till it pukes... wasted oil be damned... in fact, it's the perfect time to try some of the many available additives.
You are looking at this all wrong, the G wagon is a blessing, using that much oil negates the need to get it serviced,, fresh oil every week, I've done it, got 500K out of a 4 cylinder engine, never got a service, ever, ran like a dream, pull into the gas station, top up the oil, check the gas.

Being from the north I bet the g wagon was driven hard when cold a lot. The oil drains out of the top end of these engines when they sit for awhile.
It’s from. Germany, they know all about cold. It’s not like the Maserati’s that all overheated in Miami because they didn’t realize it got that hot.
@@aussie2uGA german nikasil engines are notorious for bore scoring in cold climates.
When I read the service bulletins I thought, "This has to be a typo" 😅
Knock on wood, mine's approaching 180k mi with low oil consumption.
Could be time to LS7-swap that G-Wagon!
Car ninja is such a G. Car wizard is also so good to. Wish i had good honest mechanics in my area.
In Germany some experts see the issue with the M113Ks is with broken catalytic converters. The converters break down and crumble into dust. The dust can then be sucked in through the exhaust valves causing this type of damage. M113s don’t have an Alusil cylinder surface.
This there was a Johnny near me. Seems like a above and beyond mechanic. Those are very hard to come by.
of all the cars you have or have had, the BMW Z8 is my favorite and I'm damned jealous.

Right! Those Canadian tornadoes are real killers aren't they?
Snow is never the issue.. SALT,SALT,SALT....
