I am on my second G-Wagon. Bought the first one a 2004 G500 that has always been my dream car. When I got some more money, i went for the G55 AMG Black. It's super fast and I am so loving it. G wagon got soul, nothing else matters.

Cool!👍 I bought my ultra low mileage silver 2006 G55 AMG in 2020. Very happy that I have one in my collection. Funny you mentioned the G500. After Easter I am gonna look at a mint condition G500 from 1998. Did you like the G500, if you compare it to your G55 AMG 😃
I’m looking at a 2005 with 120k miles to replace my 2004 GX470 as my daily driver. Lexus has 322k miles on it and is still like new but I’m in the mood for another Mercedes-Benz. I’ve had about 10 of em and wish I hadn’t sold a few of them…especially my 2006 E500 4Matic and my 1990 300SEL.

Spot on! Having ridden in your car before I can attest everything is true. And I totally forgot about the basketball hoop cup holders but as soon as you pointed them out I remember noticing them as soon as I got in. What a choice.
I bought a 2015 G63 AMG , in Orange with black trim, and have never loved like this before ! Ive owned well over 100 vehicles and this is the ultimate. Thats said, less than 1 month of ownership and only having 47,000 km on it, I have had to replace the entire steering system - power steering pump and power steering gear box!!! Im on Vancouver Island in Canada and it cost me $14,000. to fix. My motto - if you wanna play, you gotta pay !

I had an 02' just like yours and what made me sell it is the G Wagon bubble in 2021. Man do I miss that thing so fucking much I can never replace it. I'm looking for a 2010 - 2011 G55 AMG now.
It was a blast. Such a unique driving experience. Love how barebones and agricultural the early US market ones are. The extra HP of the G55 would be fun though. Cheers!

I remember the first time I saw a G-Wagon about 13 years ago thinking to myself man, I really want one. I might’ve just been a kid at the time, but I wanted one. I still do, but it would have to be a pre-2019. The new styling just doesn’t do it for me on top of it gaining a “look at me” reputation gained from TV shows, social media, etc. rather than it being a civilized military truck.
What's kind of funny is it was never on my list until I stumbled upon the one in this video. It was my neighbor's and I fell in love with it after seeing it in person so often. It just looks so utilitarian, the earlier generation like you mentioned. I pestered him for a year until he finally sold it to me. It was so unique. Glad I got to experience it.

Driving this truck in big cities where income is high and it’s common, is no problem at all.
I am in Vancouver, Canada and I see one every 10 minutes on the road.
Okay you guys in the comments are my type of people so I need your help. I want an older style G Wagon because I’m obsessed with the box styled look and a Jeep Wrangler is small to me and I also love the the utilitarian aspect of the G. Have anyone had any major problems with the older models, I seen on a forum to avoid the 09’ version but couldn’t find anything else on other models. I also came across that the G could survive well over 500k in miles which is unbelievable and pretty cool if this is true. Love this review as well.
Great video. The 200 series may be the best SUV ever but the G500 may be the most fun to tool around in.

Hello friends, I'm seeking your advice. I'm torn between opting for a 2019 used Mercedes-Benz G Wagon with 100,000 miles on it or going for one with 20,000 miles. Does the mileage significantly affect G Wagons? I adore this car model but buying it new isn't an option for me!

This is the perfect vehicle to me. Ground clearance, locking differentials and bomb-proof M113 and 5 speed transmission.
I hate that they became soccer mom mobiles when they should be on a trail somewhere.
It was a beast for sure and treated me really well for a 20 year old German car.

I am so saddened by vehicle stigmas; some of the most interesting, exciting, enjoyable vehicles are ruined by their arbitrarily negative image. Hmm.
If I could have any impact on the world it would be to end this type of unfair, surface level judgement of people for something as insignificant as the vehicle they drive - among other things. Great video by the way!

Browsing G-class videos as I'm waiting for delivery of my new-to-me '02. By "bad attention" do you mean potential personal safety hazard?
In my experience, it amplified whatever the vibe was with whatever person. It unfortunately has a stigma attached to it, but as a car guy, it's such a fun truck. Definitely worth experiencing. Enjoy! 02s rock. I'd recommend getting a carplay unit and swapping out the speakers (I had focals and they sounded great). It'll be pretty perfect after that.

Yeah I was reading there's no aux or bluetooth for music and I'm so insistent on Wow by Post Malone being the first song I play so an audio rework is planned in addition to overlanding mods! Thanks for the fast reply, how's your land cruiser treating ya?
@@BlakeMadsen The Land Cruiser has been incredible. It's been about 8 months now with it and I haven't been so excited about a car since my vry rowdy Foxbody Mustang in High School. Truly a great truck.
Did you sell? I've owned a 2002 G500 for four plus years now, i love it. And yes, i hear you people's idea about it are so incongruent with the reality.
I did end up selling it. Was such a cool truck. Glad I got to experience it. Happy you have an 02 - one of my favorite years for them.
I have a 2003 g500 that I have put nearly 200k miles on it. ZERO major mechanical issues other than normal maintenance items. Some electrical components have needed replacement (Window switches, modules etc) but nothing ridiculous. I daily drive mine mostly in the winter and live up a 12 mile dirt road in the mountains of Utah. The fit and finish is old school Mercedes tooling which is superb. Seats and paint still look like new. Highly recommended! As for what other people think, I really don't care. If you like it, awesome. If you don't, screw you and your Escalade.

Dominic G-55 or G-Wagon is not made by Mercedes Germany. It is made in Austria by Stayer company primarily as a military vehicle or as an off road farmers vehicle.
I recently bought a 2003 G Wagen for the purpose of overlanding and traveling. As a lover of canyon driving, this thing is atrocious. All the faults you describe are SO true. AND so are the reactions of others. even though it's a 20 year old vehicle that cost less than a mid spec Camry, Accord, Outback, etc. and half the price of a current top spec Wrangler or Bronco or even Tacoma. I get dirty looks too. It's almost like I want to rattle can it flat earth, put on off road tires a winch and never wash it. Oh, and a roof rack with roof top tent, which is definitely happening. Maybe I'll do a flat earth PPF. Great video.

I want your take on the newest G CLASS please
I haven’t driven one, so I can't give a real take, but I’d guess they are technically better in about every way. That said, I’ve never been a big fan. It seems like something was lost in the latest generation, some of the soul the old generations had. What I love about the older ones is how utilitarian they are. There was some scrapiness in them. The latest gen is too LA for me.
My wife has a 2003 the same color. Very funny video mostly because of the truth included within.

It was such a fun truck to own but, yeah, the social dynamic was stranger than I expected.
I owned one for two years until it was totaled.
I loved it. It was a crazy experience owning it however.
I never brought myself to purchasing another one, but I have been tempted to. Do you still own it?
I actually sold it this year and got a 200 series Land Cruiser. The G was really neat but it stirred up too much bad attention. Over the moon with the Land Cruiser!

Currently own an E46 M3 but planning to sell it to hop into a G500 2003. I keep getting told that I will miss my E46, and I know I will, but man I can't wait to throw people off when they see a G550 overlanding in my local off road trails. MAKE WAY JEEPS AND TOYOTA'S, A GENTLEMAN IS COMING THRU

It’s the Hublot of the SUVs, well the modern Rolexes, APs, PPs and RMs on wheels. Everything is ruined by the soccer and football players, boxers or rappers. It’s just a hype and a show off thing tasteless modern thing it’s just to be in the social media trend.
Definitely not the Hublot of SUVs as it is actually a unique, capable, and good-looking truck. I find the early ones, like this, to be particularly special and for car guys. Shame they stir up such bad attention and that the modern ones effectively became memes.

I am happy to pay the gas tax for owning this vehicle.
It’s arguably the most reliable Mercedes or even luxury German car model on the road.
It has the least deprecation, nearly none at 10-15 years old.
It looks good old or new.
It’s tough and can save your life in a crash.

Calling it a car or expecting it to be car-like is the first mistake. It’s what it was designed to be , a truck. Use it properly.

You’re showcasing one of the big issues I had with this great truck that I cover in this video - people focusing on image rather than all the great things about this truck. It was fun, fairly reliable, and a completely unique experience.
I actually did try to trade it at one point for a 90s NAS Defender just so I could experience what those were like, but that didn’t go through. I have pretty much zero interest in Land Rovers otherwise. Why do you care that I sold it?

American soldier stationed in germany. The bundasweir (german army) drive these and treat them like hmmwv. However I seen more toyota hilux they spray painted olive green being used as german military vehicle more often than the g wagon.
I would never ever daily or own a hmmwv. They will have to pay me to take one. They are headache to drive (require a helmet and a passenger to "clear right" and depending on the set up, rear view is questionable at best, with AC that is more loud than cool, leaks rain your sleeves will be wet, the seat is less comfortable than public school buses and kids size. But the doors are the worst: they are the cheap folding plastic type with zipper windows (rare to fine one that zips up becuase the zipper tears off the door), or the hard plastic type that rarely close and open without a struggle or the up armored that will chop off fingers or break ankles if not paying attention when it shuts (those doors weighing over 100 lbs).
The g wagon tho, I never been in one and that makes it desirable.
