      Check out Diesel Pump UK and his OM606 conversion kits for G-wagons.. Amazing. I'd clean up that AMG on the weekends as all that rust even underneath is surface. As for parts they're all over the place. 99% of the electronics were used on other SUV's and good pieces can be had for a song. That was a good score for 30 it just needs a guy who wants to spend some spare time cleaning it up.

    I have a 2008 G500 and I'm the second owner. It was well maintained and I use a local MB master mechanic when it needs something. So far in 5 years it's cost me about 2K in routine maintenance. I've also had a couple of repairs that have totaled about 3K over those 5 years. I fix little things that go wrong to keep it looking and running like new. Nice thing is that the body style has stayed the same over the years (until last year, of course). Terrible gas mileage. Practical? No. Fun? Yes.

      Yeah if you want a nice Mercedes SUV, the GLS is way nicer, a bit cheaper, and the new one is big and boxy enough to have a similar presence to the G-Wagen. Offroading-wise, you're not going to Moab, it's a unibody crossover based on a sedan platform. It does, though, have plenty of capability. You can take logging trails and unmaintained state park backroads that an E-Class would barely be able to start going down.
      That's true of a lot more crossover's than you'd expect, you can get very far back in the woods in West Virginia with a Nissan Murano. The cladding that everyone hates actually protects the paint pretty well; the skidplates won't protect you from a high-center like real ones do, but they do the job short of that; the added ground clearance is more than enough; and they've done enough to the suspension that you'll never bottom out. You're not going to bend the frame on a rock just because it's not BOF, these things aren't made of cardboard lol.

    I have a 2005 G500 Grand Edition. Mechanically it is in excellent condition however the body is a different story. It has minor rust on the rear door and significant rust under the rocker bar trim. This trim attracts rust as water and dirt gets in there. I would recommend periodically removing the trim and cleaning the metal underneath. Another area of rust/corrosion is around the windscreen. The seal harbors water and eventually it rusts. The worst area is under the car. Part of the exhaust recently split due to the screws completely rusting out. It looks like something that was brought up from the Titanic! Luckily its only a $250 repair.
    I have been quoted $3000 - $5000 to restore the body of this G-Wagen to be perfect and completely rust free. I love this car so I will do it.

      - or slap on a $3k bodykit and exterior upgrades and people will think you have the 2021 model that costs $200k USD when you only spent $25k lol (as long as you don't let them see the interior)
      - or even spend $10k and change the interior completely to match the 2021 models and voila, you spent the price of a Toyota Corolla for a 2021 G-Wagon that Kanye West and Cristiano Ronaldo flex with on Instagram lol

    Please keep in mind, these things are build to last. It is a reason why over 60 armys around the World use the G. But every thing ages and Repairs cost, if you need a car, the G is not for you. If you love the G and it is you hobby, then go for it, but have 200 USD per Month put aside for repairs atleast.

You will get some rust issues - rear corners, the bottom of the doors, hinges/frame on the rear door etc. What is rock solid and do not rust very much, is the frame (unlike other body on frame trucks). The frame is internally wax coated. Parts are terribly expensive, though. The old W460 series is much simpler, and easier to fix, but not really a luxury car.

  • @MegaShinobi3
    @MegaShinobi3 Год назад

    The development of the G-Class started in 1972 with a cooperative agreement between Daimler-Benz and Steyr-Daimler-Puch in Graz, Austria. The W460 was introduced at a press event held at the off-road proving ground in Toulon, France, and went on sale in September 1979 with three engine choices and five body variants. The first-generation M-Class, designated under the model code W163 is a body-on-frame SUV where production moved to the U.S. plant near Vance, Alabama. Since the original G-Wagon was more utilitarian vehicle, Mercedes had to make the M-Class more car-like for the US Market (No exposed door hinges for example). When I heard they were bringing the G-Wagon back as utilitarian as the version in the 70's( with only a few upgrades) and they expected people to pay many time more then the current GLE line( with is still more suited for the US market, you're not going off-road, you' re going to Whole Foods.).I said to myself nobody who Googled the previous would be ignorant enough to pay that much. I was wrong. The people who fell for this don't research. THEY FOLLOW.

    They have done a great job convincing people that complexity equals value. I don't believe that is always true. I remember a gun guru at a gun show telling me that simplicity is a hallmark of good engineering, and complexity is a result of bad engineering. Guns and vehicles are different, but there is still a lot of truth to his opinion. New sub, your channel is great, keep telling it like it is sir!
