This beautiful song was written for the remarkable young activist, Mark Ashton, who died in 1987, less than two weeks after being diagnosed HIV positive. His legacy is wonderfully captured in the soon to be released British film, "Pride". I hadn't even heard of Mark before I saw it but I'm so glad that I now know what an amazing person he was. Thank you, Stephen Beresford (who wrote the screenplay) for bringing such an incredible young man to my attention, and to the very talented Ben Schnetzer for bringing him back to life on the screen. xx
The most profound and powerful song of a generation. A song forever etched into my soul and the souls and hearts for so many countless others who have lost precious loved ones. The strain of the disease that took so many innocent lives, the stress and the aches it caused and too, the guilt of having survived. The tears flow every time I hear the first notes of this masterpiece and the incredible voice of Jimmy Somerville. We shall never forget, We will carry on......
Every time I play or hear this beautiful song it reminds me dearly of my mam who died from cancer 28 years ago. Being only 20 at the time and the youngest of 4 all I can see is the haunting image of her waving from the back of my brothers car as she is driven to hospital and then on to the hospice where they would not allow me to go and see her...thinking it was in my best interest.. I was naive and didn't realise what a hospice was...I thought it was somewhere people went to recover after surgery.....I never saw her again... I feel so cheated in life by missing out on so many things with her and sadly it wasn't in my best interest and its been very tough at times, but I have to be strong..nor just for me..but for my family also and just know she's with me looking after me and watching over my children. Love and miss you always..sleep tight mam X
Bless ya mate hope you feel better now dont tri and put all the wrongs to right as it will just drain you, your eyes are in the front of your head for a reason
ohhh I just love this song its just touch my childhood. when I was school n listen this music by ours senior school mate. Its just get me back to school yard and lost some of my friends. He is GAY or KING why should I bother he was great musician for me who compose this number.
I hadn't heard this song for many years,,, it just got played on Radio Devon and reminded me how good it is...….I could never understand why this song was not covered by more major artists,,, one of the greatest compositions ever,, up there with anything from Lennon/McCartney, Dylan,, Bowie, etc etc
I haven't listened to this song in a really long time. Man, it just hits you in the gut every single time. Thank you, Jimmy Somerville and the Communards for putting out this devastating piece of beauty.
came here after watching the terrific movie 'Pride'.....not being gay myself...however...such a touching movie about relationships and prejudice ... well worth anyone's time to watch a good moving film.
God, I love the opening keyboard, whatever sort of instrument that is. Transports me back to 1987. The song is so very lonely, yet it also makes me feel like I can do anything. I used to believe that.
Well I'm once again a soggy mess, lol. This song reduces me to a sniveling heap every time I hear it.I'm the only left out of my circle from 20 years ago,all the others succumbed to AIDS.But Jimmy was, still is,a powerful voice shouting out about hiv/aids,& other sociological issues. And this song so resonates with me.Thanks,Jimmy, you're the best.
Bought tears to me eyes, this really is a great song! Capturing those dark days in the 80s for gay men, homophobia and HIV to contend with! However as a community we mobilised to fight back! Shame that sense of community has gone now!
What a song. Simple yet so touching. And Jimmy looking so young singing those lyrics about his friend. He must look back and be very proud of that performance.
For Simon Key (RIP) DJ and friend, who went to see Sylvester in concert in London - met one of his dancers and in total ignorance, succumbed to the virus we knew nothing about. Still missed.
A beautiful plaintiff cry, this song is very powerful in an understated way I have loved it from afar for years but had no idea it was written about Mark Ashton. RIP.
A song for the ages! People wise up protect yourselves. Aids is ugly We have lost many loved ones Lets stop this horrible disease . Thank you for this Amazing Song!
This is so true for my best friends mum right now, she has battled cancer for the last 3 years and has fought long and hard but can’t continue on any longer, she only has days to a week or so remaining, I love her unconditionally and it’s so hard saying goodbye to her but this is what I’d like to say to her and is my tribute to her xxx
This is such a great melancholy track for it evokes such emotions for it is was the year I found love & broke up..... it is hold memories that I will take to the grave & I still think of her.
Recently watched the film Pride about gay activists helping the Welsh miners during the miners strike in 1984. Heard this song before and in the film but did not know the story behind it. What a truly beautiful song and tribute. Jimmy's voice is just wonderful and has such emotion in it. Just wonderful !

Such an amazing song both in lyrics and in melody that it makes you wonder why it isn't covered by any of the "RUclips singing sensations" Aaaagjh, let's not kid ourselves. Can't beat Jimmy at his game.
Ilove this song and one i want in the musical line up at my funeral one day, along with Freddie Mercurys Days of our lives, and Take Thats, Star,i wouldnt normally respond to a comment on a foruum when i dont know you, but i like your comment, and support what you say x
Thanks. And you could be right, though I imagine that 'cause of the advances in research/medication/therapies etc the subject has somewhat faded into the background.Plus we spent so many years fighting to have the virus destigmatised it ceased to be the 'cause celebre'.For many the virus has lost it's 'scariness' factor.
And why are you sharing it with everyone on youtube who don't know you and don't care? Honestly... If you cry like a baby when you hear it then don't listen to it! Jesus.. get some friends or call the Samaratins if you're that bloody lonely
The most beautiful song ever written.

Saw "Pride" only yesterday and it's one of the best movies I have seen this year. Mark Aston must have been a remarkable young man.
What is not said in the movie, unfortunately, Mark was a communist. Chairman of the Young Communist League. Mark Ashton is unforgotten! Mark PRESENTE!

Classic... should be re released.
I wonder if Jimmy would mind cover versions of it, or if it's too personal a song for him to let others do it.
