This song haunted me in 1989. I was 26 and everyone around me started to die from AIDS. I felt like it was only a matter of time. This music highlights the sad, sad horror of all the joy and beauty that was lost. Still make me cry at 56...
I knew one of the first cases in NYC. In 1978. He died in 1982. By 1990, I knew 100's that died. 2021, no one talks about AIDS. It still kills. 😔
Feel your pain hun..never forgotten xxx
@@zyxw2024 AIDS was vicious, treacherous and a very mean virus that wiped out gay men around the globe. The first AIDS case I knew passed in 1983 and from there it went rampant killing gay men by the thousands. It was like this, hypothetically: you were diagnosed today and 6 months to a year you were dead. This happened to many friends who lived in New York City and a few other cities. This virus literally destroyed many gay communities around the world. With modern technology we have medicine that can manage and quell the virus in place. When I saw the AIDS quilt in Washington, DC it was a very depressing site for me and brought back painful memories.
You are not alone ❤ sending love
It's okay to cry... and to love anyone and PLEASE hug yourself once a day... please do it...it works...xxx
Look where we are now, my love to all of you, my brothers and sisters.
This is an anthem for anyone who has lost someone, gay or straight. We are all human, equal and entitled to love and to be loved.
Exactly
That's right. It's a haunting melody and words
It's an Anthem for someone who put his belief above his own, the work for Equality & helped the Miners Strike in 1984. Most likely a group of men whom many never felt true empathy for LGBTQ until they meet him. Realizing it's Us vs. The System.
In memory of my dear friend Christopher Loveless 1961-2015😢😢
@@adrianh332 sorry for your loss 💗
As beautiful 35 years on as it was in 1987/88. One of the finest songs ever ❤
The song is as beautiful but the reason behind it is not, especially for those now nursing kids to their death. My mum quite as an auxy after nursing a kid to their death when she thought that we had moved on from this. Sadly it seems not. My greatest fear is that we repeat the mistakes that we made back then.
@@Dermacrosis so sorry, the beauty is in the eyes of the beholder,. guess, beside death, the beauty of this song is hope! Bless you!
Literally the hardest song to listen to. Always makes me cry.
How good is this song? What a voice. What a performer. Sublime.
The first thing that gets me about this song is the mesmerising piano of the Reverend Richard Coles, so often a musical partner as well as a friend of Jimmy's. Then of course that iconic voice of Jimmy Somerville.
Hes a lying maggot
I don't care that I'm not gay this is incredible music . This songs about losing someone you love whether gay or straight. Respect to the songwriters and to Jimmy . Masterpiece
100% agree, this is one of those songs that anyone at some point can relate to
@@adamridley7634 a heartfelt, poignant and beautiful song. It immediately transports me back 35 or so years, to a tragic event. A young lad we worked with, who had just turned 18, died at the hands of his parents, through physical and mental abuse and neglect. He had not long confided what was happening to him, and steps were being taken, by his employer and work colleagues to remove him from his nightmare situation. He sadly died over the Christmas period from hypothermia and from other factors related to the abuse suffered. Brings tears to my eyes and painful memories come flooding back, on hearing this song. How do the very people that should have loved and cared for him, betray him so awfully with their vile behaviour,
@@markford2988 Thats terrible mate, hopefully karma has paid a visit to his excuse of parents. It's a beautiful song though. My mother used to play it a lot when I was a kid in the 80s and just rediscovered it, didn't realise what a gem it is.
@@adamridley7634Thanks mate. I agree with your sentiment about Karma paying them a visit. Still a beautiful song though.

I felt a need to play this song moments after my Dad died, I was only 17 and that was 35 years ago. Playing it again and I just sob, this is a song for all those loved and lost, a painful work of art.
what can I say one great singer that came out of Glasgow the voice of a angel simply the nest

A beautiful song, sung with such Grace by a wonderful singer. Don't ever change Jimmy.
Such a touching song resonates to many for many reasons ❤
In memory of Mark Ashton - May he rest in peace. ( jimmy wrote this song in his memory)
Just watched pride for the tenth time, showed to sone straight friends they loved the film! As a gay community in the U.K. we owe mark a huge debt!
Just watched Pride for the 2nd time .. so sad .. so poignant .. a beautiful song for a beautiful person Mark Ashton x x
@Ford Ford so glad you enjoyed the film, everyone is different and you’re already brave for coming out! Many do not! I came out in 1992 it was a much different world!
@@NorthernFella Straight son of a Yorkshire Miner, loved "Pride" love this song. So heartfelt. Didn't know the connection to Mark Ashton. Genuine kick in the feels to a 54 year old "bloke"
@@Sparks127 Ah Indeed, I never realised the connection til I saw the film, Always liked the song. There's an interview on TVAM where he is talking about and the two presenters are so uncomfortable. I am glad things have changed.
This is an absolute masterpiece. I have this on vinyl, I think.
100% Agree
I recently watched a BBC documentary about AIDS and this song featured. It tingled a memory somewhere, but I hadn’t heard for it years. An absolutely beautiful song that makes me think of all those who lost their lives to AIDS, and others who lost their lives. I can’t listen without shedding a tear.
I am guessing it was AIDS: The Unheard Tapes.
It was a very difficult watch for me as I was alive at the time and so know why there was the scramble to record as many stories as possible and how the people willing to record their stories were in the minority so we lost the stories of a lot of people. That makes the recorded stories even more precious.
Yes, that’s right. It was a really powerful documentary.
Shit. I know it’s not the done thing to respond to one’s own comment. But hey, what the heck. I fucking love this song. It’s a perfect document of a bygone era, in terms of the challenges we faced, and the music. It is, most definitely, the perfect ballad. If I’m ever invited onto Desert Island Discs, I will wholeheartedly choose this as a disc.
Love to you all.
I recently discovered that documentary on iPlayer. It was truly awful how these men were treated, they did absolutely nothing wrong yet were treated so awfully. I’m happy society has moved on
Even being a straight man, this song makes your eyes a little more wet than usual. Totally awesome.
Most of his fans are straight
Every time
A wonderful, tragically sad song, with excellent work on the keys by Richard Coles. And Jimmy Somerville's voice needs no introduction. R.I.P. Mark Ashton x
Song about Marc Ashton - to all the fallen friends we all had in the 80s, playing this for you today x
Jimmy and Richard Cole made some brilliant 80’s tunes. This is probably the best. A true anthem. Absolutely love it.
Paul, you're so right!
It's an amazing song, the vocal, the piano, the message... just beautiful
This is one song guaranteed to make me cry and choke-up every time!
I’m watching this and crying now thinking of my best friend who died a few years after this song was released. I think this year has been a rough time for so many people.

For my love who decided not stay in this world and left it, a man of passion who could not see past the immediacy of his feelings ❤️
Simply beautiful. A document of the particular time and place in which it was written for so many, and a sad, poignant piece of 80s pop for us who weren't. Red is still one of my favourite albums of that time.
Such a beautiful piece of music writern with such empathy and heart felt lyrics, you can really feel the pain and loss in Jimmy's voice
Such a strong chord progression backed by the swing in the hihats. Then, with restrain, a sax at the end. So good.......
just 100% iconic haunting ballad. Jimmy just smashed it. beautiful, important, relevant pop perfection.
This song has such strong memories and emotions, I borrowed a cassette of Red from a friend and we lost touch, I later had a letter from his mum to say he had died at the age of 21 from Diabetes. I still have that cassette, the memories and the emotions, such a great song. God bless Mark Roberts RIP
I listen to this song often...the love ❤ of my life passed away 9 months ago on our 21st wedding anniversary . He was not only my best friend, he was my only friend. When we were together we didn't need anybody else. He was my everything.

Such a wonderful and complete experience: music - lyrics - video.
From a lost time when the music used to provide the atmosphere, the lyrics the story while the video accompanied your dreams... all of them having a purpose... from a lost time...
Well put. Music used to be magic.
I wonder where in England it was filmed, the street scenes in particular. Would be interesting to see a making-of, but I guess there isn't one and I wonder if the scenes or any more footage even exits anymore, I'm guessing its director Andy Morahan would know this.
@@felinefanII it was mainly filmed in rotherhyde
@@morleywhite911 Thank you !
Can't believe this was so long ago now, 32 years. Wonder why there wasn't a making-of for this video, it would've been fun to see. Perhaps some cut bits still exist from the filming locations, a kind of time capsule if found today.
You carry some songs with you through life , most from you teen formative years ,this is and "small town boy " both from JS have stayed with me for years . They have a very special meaning to me they both bring me close to tears , some happy some sad, but when I hear them, I just stop and listen and become that 14 year old boy again and remember that time and really feal the emotion again.

I still use to listen to this song when I feel alone, like just right now.
I rediscovered this amazing song whilst watching the BBC documentary AIDS: Unheard tapes. Brilliant! I laughed and cried in equal measure. It brought back the memories of the loss and hatred (especially from the tabloid press) at that time.
I watched it to, it is a difficult watch to those of use who grew up at the time. I also laughed and cried.
Sadly it wasn't just the tabloid press it was also the televised news, and the attitude in general.
Same reason I’m here. Such an excellent documentary
@@blahblog4322 I can't argue on that one. Though I do remember the original release.
What still saddens me is that we have lost the people and their life stories and so helping us all grow.
My, then, local hospital was considering opening an "A.I.D.S" ward, but thanks to the moronic nursing unions of the time, all nursing staff had to volunteer despite the fact it was known in the NHS at the time how it H.I.V could be passed on.

I never cried the way I cried over you
As I put down the telephone and the world it carried on
Somewhere else, someone else is crying too
Another man has lost a friend, I bet he feels the way I do
And now I'm left without, I know your love within
As I watch the sun go down, watching the world fade away
All the memories of you come rushing back to me
As I watch the sun go down, watching the world fade away
All I want to do is kiss you once goodbye
Summer comes and I remember how we'd march
We'd march for love and pride, together arm in arm
Tears have turned, turned to anger and contempt
I'll never let you down, a battle I have found
And all the dreams we had, I will carry on
As I watch the sun go down, watching the world fade away
All the memories of you come rushing back to me
As I watch the sun go down, watching the world fade away
All I want to do is kiss you once goodbye, goodbye
Goodbye, goodbye
And all the dreams we had, I will carry on
As I watch the sun go down, watching the world fade away
