As I get older and older, friends around me are starting to fade away. So I listen to this magnificent song and get some comfort out of it time and time again.
This was during the AIDS crisis prior to the influx of medicines that now treat so many people living with HIV/AIDS. RIP to all those who passed on. 🕯️ 🕊️
For my Simon. Turned my life around 1985. Died 1989. You were my first. For all that has happend since, I love you still. I always will - because I never got to Kiss You Once Goodbye.
I miss my friend, the only friend I ever had and waited 37 years for, had for a short 16 months and lost her.. my beautiful Piper. My dog. Alone again now.. I cant stop thinking of her.. just found this song,, Thanks Jimmy sweetheart. Sorry about you losing Steve Bronski too. Xx😢😢
A truly beautiful and emotive song! Gotta rank up there as one of the best in my opinion! Richard's arrangement, Jimi's vocals and that saxophone break. Perfect 👌👌👌
Such an emotive and incredibly touching song. For my Carlos and everyone else we have lost. Goodbye but never forgotten 💔❤ Thank you Jimmy & Richard for this gorgeous meaningful song ❤❤
I heard this song on the BBC"s Aids- The Unheard Tapes documentary, very powerful documentary which was hard to watch for a straight guy like me just turned 50, I was just starting high school when AIDS was at its peak, honestly I wasn't mature or interested enough to understand it, put now I really really understand the pain those guys felt just by listening to this song, I must of listened to it 10 times tonight , for a guy that has seen and grew up listening to metal bands it's strange I like this but that's
No tengo palabras para esta canción, me ha acompañado toda mi vida. Mi total admiración a Jimmy Somerville, que con Richard coles hizo grandes tesoros de canciones
You carry some songs with you through life , most from you teen formative years ,this is and "small town boy " both from JS have stayed with me for years . They have a very special meaning to me they both bring me close to tears , some happy some sad, but when I hear them, I just stop and listen and become that 14 year old boy again and remember that time and really feal the emotion again. Small town boy was the start and For a friend was the end, the girl will forever be with me but lost to the world in the 80’s .
I bought the vinyl of this record in a $5 bin a few years ago because I had vaguely remembered a friend telling me about it. At a certain point after listening to it a few times, I finally registered the lyrics to this song and just cried uncontrollably. And still do on occasion. There's a gay bar nearby that has live piano karaoke most nights, and I had mentioned to the pianist that I would like to do "Smalltown Boy" (which he already had) but suggested that he should learn some Communards. Well, I just got his newsletter and it turns out that he picked THIS SONG. I'm not sure how appropriate it is for a bar, but I'm willing to try to do it some justice. I try to turn people on to both Bronski Beat and Communards because I think it's important gay cultural history, still relevant and emotionally compelling today.
I’m gay and now 59 but when I first played this to my sister about 10 years ago (i.e. way after the AIDS crisis) she still cried and realised if I’d just been a few years older I would have not known the risks and would have probably have died…
This is my favorite song from Mr Somerville. Will never get better than this. It even eclipses Small Town Boy. Thank you for being a truly amazing artist.
“As I put down the telephone and the world it carried on” This line resonates, to lose a loved one and then step out into the street and watch the world, life, carry on, it’s almost a surreal experience
Oh this song is so heartbreakingly beautiful - as I get older - it hits home even harder - the tears roll down my face - those memories come rushing back to me 🏳🌈
Me too - Mark was my Mum’s good friend and now in my 50s, I remember her loss of such a special young man. What a very fine and fitting song to remember him ❤
This was one of my late partner's favourite songs. It always brings tears to my eyes but I never tire of listening to it. One of the most beautiful songs ever written
I adore this song! Great 80s...It was always on repeat in my walkman before sleeping...what a lovely memory...Many greetings from Croatia! We love you, Jimmy...🥰
How this song only has just over 600 Likes is BEYOND me. Such an emotionally charged, deep, mesmerizing and sad song. I love it today just like I did decades ago ♥
I never cried the way I cried over you As I put down the telephone and the world it carried on Somewhere else, someone else is crying too Another man has lost a friend, I bet he feels the way I do And now I'm left without, I know your love within As I watch the sun go down, watching the world fade away All the memories of you come rushing back to me As I watch the sun go down, watching the world fade away All I want to do is kiss you once goodbye Summer comes and I remember how we'd march We'd march for love and pride, together arm in arm Tears have turned, turned to anger and contempt I'll never let you down, a battle I have found And all the dreams we had, I will carry on As I watch the sun go down, watching the world fade away All the memories of you come rushing back to me As I watch the sun go down, watching the world fade away All I want to do is kiss you once goodbye, goodbye Goodbye, goodbye And all the dreams we had, I will carry on As I watch the sun go down, watching the world fade away All the memories of you come rushing back to me As I watch the sun go down, watching the world fade away All I want to do is kiss you once goodbye, goodbye As I watch the sun go down, watching the world fade away All the memories of you come rushing back to me As I watch the sun go down, a darkness comes to me All I want to do is kiss you once goodbye
Jimmy, this song is the biggest present You could make to the world… thank You so much for this beautiful and very important song for the pride community ❤❤❤
Glad you appreciate this masterpiece, it’s of its time when being diagnosed with AIDS was a death sentence. I lost a dear friend within six months of his diagnosis.
Whenever I listen to this song, it just makes me remember the millions of people who died from this sad disease and who didn't have the chance that we have today, to have medication that lets us live a normal life, i feel so sorry for that!
Picture is better here but overall sound-wise, I do prefer the old version it just grabs me more. Of all their videos, this is probably the biggest time capsule would adore a making-of with maybe leftover footage of 1987 street scenes/buildings (of which the clip always needed more, in my humble opinion) but there's probably zero of it anymore, alas.
When you know this song was written about Mark Ashton, it hits especially deep. Ben Schnetzer played him brilliantly in Pride, and I can't hear this song without picturing Mark's youthful energy - as portrayed in the film - or the real Mark Ashton, smiling for the camera just one year before he died of AIDS. Rest in peace, brother xx We live in a world where every victory for justice feels like euphoria, and every defeat feels like a cruel, crushing blow. But love and hope die last.
Brings back memories of someone in my life. It’s hard to listen without a tear. I’m sure it’s the same for many people. Beautiful like the petals falling from a cherry tree but over too quickly , now only memories.

The song is an emotional ballad and was written in the memory of Mark Ashton,[2] a friend of Jimmy Somerville and Richard Coles.[3] Mark Hooper of The Rough Guide to Rock writes that this cut may be Somerville's "most impassioned moment".[2] "For a Friend" reached number 28 on the British charts.
One of the finest ballads of all time. The production, the instrumentation, the hooks, vocals...everything's just perfect.

I never cried the way I cried over you
As I put down the telephone and the world it carried on
Somewhere else, someone else is crying too
Another man has lost a friend, I bet he feels the way I do
And now I'm left without, I know your love within
As I watch the sun go down, watching the world fade away
All the memories of you come rushing back to me
As I watch the sun go down, watching the world fade away
All I want to do is kiss you once goodbye
Summer comes and I remember how we'd march
We'd march for love and pride, together arm in arm
Tears have turned, turned to anger and contempt
I'll never let you down, a battle I have found
And all the dreams we had, I will carry on
As I watch the sun go down, watching the world fade away
All the memories of you come rushing back to me
As I watch the sun go down, watching the world fade away
All I want to do is kiss you once goodbye, goodbye
Goodbye, goodbye
And all the dreams we had, I will carry on
As I watch the sun go down, watching the world fade away
All the memories of you come rushing back to me
As I watch the sun go down, watching the world fade away
All I want to do is kiss you once goodbye, goodbye
