I actually prefer this kind of content vs every influencer using the “it” product of the week and giving a review. There is space for all the different kinds of content, but there is so much more to know about the cosmetics and skin care we love - so thank you!
As cosmetic formulator, a lot of these posts tend to be bad. You did such a good job with this topic! We should not fear chemicals but we should not be using anything haphazard. In my professional opinion, it has made a lot of brands worse. Those natural preservatives do not hold a candle to a paraben. And we wonder why we are seeing more recalls.
Exactly! Every chemist I've worked with has said the dangers of using natural preservatives far outweighs anything from some synthetic ones that keep bacteria, mold, etc from growing inside your makeup. Love that you're a formulator!
Zachariah, I hate to do this, but I always want to know when I am using words wrong. It's "haphazard" not half hazard. I know you must be well educated, i am not trying to be rude or demeaning, but I get so embarrassed when I find out I've been mispeaking (& it happens a lot, I've changed industries and mixed up very key words lol).
Oohhhh iiiii! Another informative video from Marlena. I love the research you put into these videos, and into MUG at the time. Integrity matters. I know this will translate into all your business endeavours.
Thank you for being such a transparent and informed resource who offers factual insight to help educate your audience. You are so easy to like as a human and make it easy to want to support you ❤
Let me tell you what's irritating on the skin...CARMINE! Some of us are severely allergic to it! I didn't dare buy Makeup Geek, even tho i so wanted to, because you used carmine in EVERYTHING! And then I found out about "carmine paprika" from a serious allergic reaction. Don't buy the chinese prepared food from Wegmans, they're serving you crushed bugs!
Cosmetic Chemist here: order of ingredients is highest to lowest concentration until you reach the 1% line! Once you are at 1% and below, ingredients can be arranged however the brand or formulator sees fit (for the most part) so even if something seems “higher” on the list it could still be an ingredient just for marketing.
I know this is 3 months old 😂 so you might not see this, but figured I’d ask - I always knew about the order going highest to lowest in concentration. Recently, there was a product I used up and went back to repurchase and saw the order of the ingredient list changed. They used to have 14% concentration of a certain ingredient and it was the 1st ingredient in a very short ingredient list. But, when I went back to repurchase it, all of a sudden that ingredient was down at the bottom. I was upset they switched it and were still claiming it had a 14% concentration and decided not to repurchase. But, I did email the brand asking them why they are claiming it has 14% concentration still when that ingredient moved from being the 1st ingredient to down at the bottom. They said they changed the order to be listed in descending order of weight rather than concentration. I’d never heard of that before. Is that something skincare brands can do? Even if they can, I don’t understand at all why they’d want to? People are going to see the “main” ingredient they’re claiming is in a 14% concentration is at the end of the ingredient list, and most are going to think it’s in order of highest to lowest concentration and not buy it. So odd!
By the way, I tried to do my eye makeup like you do, and ….I got a compliment on how beautiful it looked!! I immediately told my coworker I learned it from you!! So thank you!!
Thank you for this! There’s a beauty guru I follow that used to fear monger people by saying she’s not using certain things bc of how bad they are…and it really made me upset that nothing was ever backed up or just sounded off. So I love something as super informative as this and hope this person watches this.
I think it's a business decision for many creators, they know greenwashing + fear = views. If you are talking about Tati, please unsubscribe, she 100% knows she's spouting nonsense. I'm in marketing, tbh, it's super easy to fib about stuff like this and seem very genuine. I have a whole one woman skit I do to show people how well someone of us can perform, it's alarming to you honest people, but pls know, about half the population is pretty damn good at fibbing their sincerity and data.
Can you please, please, please do a video on common eye makeup ingredients that cause eye irritation? I seem to have developed an allergy to eye makeup, but don’t even know where to start with figuring out which ingredient is the culprit.
I’m an Industrial Hygienist/ Occupational Safety professional at a military base. Yes, the dose makes the poison. The concentration, frequency and duration of use of a chemical makes a lot of difference! Some chemicals can be allergens or sensitizers (citrus essential oil does that to my skin). I also avoid clean beauty for many reasons: it’s expensive, unregulated and expires quickly.
Always, ALWAYS read the ingredients. Some products claim to be “fragrance-free” but when they use essential oils…umm, hello, those usually have a scent. Some manufacturers use masking scents to cover up the chemical smells.
Just to be clear, the companies are not necessarily lying, I believe in cosmetics, "fragrance" means something very specific, and "fragrance free" does not mean smell-free. I'm pro EO but also pro science, so I'm torn on adding EOs, a few formulations do it well, but I mostly stick to DIY so I can control %s. But I have given myself a few chemicals burns so I admit it can be dumb to use EOs on the skin in most cases.
So glad to see you uploading videos on a regular basis again. You truly have been one of my favorite RUclipsrs and one of the first that I followed 10 years ago. Your also one of the few from back then that I continue to follow because I know I can trust you to be honest and you also create some beautiful looks. 😍☺️

Yay! I was a little worried when I saw the title but then remembered you have manufactured commercial makeup, you aren't likely suddenly afraid of big science words lol...
Just FYI, in some countrys (ie. Brazil (where I live)) it is not mandatory to list the ingredients in order of concentration, so a brand can list an ingredient as one if the first and not be on a high concetration on that product.
Thank you for this amazing video. I really appreciate the way you are teaching us the important facts that we really need to know.. It's wonderful to see you again

Thank you for this video. I uploaded one about a month ago about there possibility being heavy metals in our makeup. I did that video because my eyelids have an allergic reaction to pressed pigments (organic pressed pigments). So, even though approved in the EU, I'm glad they're not approved in the US for use around the eye area. I did that video after researching what "pressed pigment" ingredients are. It was overwhelming. I also have an allergic reaction to Carmine, depending on how much is in that particular eyeshadow. It's an irritant to my lids. As you said, it does depend on where those ingredients are within the ingredient list. I'd love for you to give me your professional feedback on that video. I'm really enjoying this new series you're doing.
So glad you mentioned purple! EVERY makeup guru says it is notoriously difficult to formulate purple. And I agree, the formula can be very hit or miss. What is your stance on cosmetic brands using unethically sourced mica or other ingredients? And can you please make a video on this topic specially and also talk about brands using ethically sourced ingredients. This was a very informative video! Love ❤
I definitely have thoughts! I had my manufacturers prove the suppliers were not using child labor. Sadly it’s mostly happening in India from what I understand. Many brands are now moving to synthetic mica as a replacement because of this issue

As a Chemist, myself, Marlena is exactly correct on EWG. Very questionable. Parabens insure a clean and safe product. Formaldehyde is a big NO, tho.
I am a chemist too. Parabens are one of the worst ingredients for us and the environment. Both of us can't be correct.
