The reason brands attack petrolatum is precisely because it’s effective and dirt cheap. On paper, the competition is unbeatable, so they have to do their best to disqualify it.

This is why I think Hydroquinone is getting pulled from the shelves. They will sell it as a prescription for 10 times as much, then may return back to the shelves years from now for 10 times the price. That’s what they did with inhalers and other products.

@@whitepaper5241 You have to remember that for influencers, a huge part of their job is to review products. They kind of have to constantly get new products in order to accomplish that. And honestly, that's not a terrible thing - personally, having a single person review a product and disseminate that info is better than having a ton of people buy it and then come to a consensus on whether it was good or not.
Yes, this means they have a ton of unused makeup lying around, but they can only go through so much of it by themselves, especially when they have more coming in every day. They can also only give away so much of it to family and friends. They can't resell it or give it away to fans because it's a health hazard and it would cause liability issues for them. I guess a solution could be to use disposable applicators for everything to try and keep it sterile, but that would create waste in of itself. So not sure about what could be done.
The only real issue arises when an influencer pushes the idea that you _need_ to buy a ton of different products or a specific product to accomplish something. And for that, you can choose if you want to follow that particular kind of influencer. I personally choose not to

I'll stop using it but then when I'm staying over my mother and I forget his cream I'm like hmm let me try vaseline one more time because "apparently it doesn't cause harm" but nope, after a day he breaks in to a rash. So I've learnt my lesson never again. And also I don't like vaseline for slugging because it catches dust particles in the air easier which then causes me to break out. I don't think vaseline causes breakout but it catches particles likes glue and I think that's what cause break outs.

I have afro textured hair. My understanding of avoiding petroleum in afro hair care products is that once you put it on, it can prevent your daily hair moisturizer from getting to your hair shaft which can lead to dryness. A lot of people with afro textured hair moisturize their hair daily throughout the week and wash it once a week. So if you're using petroleum on your hair at the beginning of the week, are you sealing out moisture? I've never had any fear or concern with petroleum (vasaline) or mineral oil (baby oil) on my skin.

Part of the thing that pushes the whole 'all natural' maketing in skincare is what Dr Dray talks about @11:40 onwards- mineral oil derived products are associated with being common, working class or poor, where all the essential oils, exotic oils and butters are definite have a feel of luxury and 'handcraftedness' (even though these products are made in a factory) .

I used to be really into “clean” beauty and even when I started learning the truth about the science behind it I still hesitated to change over to products that don’t market themselves that way. Clean beauty’s marketing’s real strength is the fear that it creates but also the feeling of being “superior” in a way because it’s like you somehow know something that everyone else doesn’t and you’re healthier for it. All these plants and oils they use sound exotic which makes us assume they are somehow better only because we’re not familiar with them and they’re more expensive. There really is a lot of classism tied up with clean beauty that’s hard to see at first

    Fun story:
When my nephew was little (3 or 4 I think), he would relentlessly pick and chew on his lips, when they were dry in winter - not understanding, that he was only making things worse, at one point even causing bleeding.
And he violently refused any cream, my sister in law tried to put on him. Guess, what he finally did accept (after a lot of tears all around)? A dab of plain vaseline. I'm guessing, it was, because it's odor and tasteless. He was also an extremely picky eater at the time, so it makes sense, that he wouldn't want anything weird smelling or tasting on his lips, either.
Completely resolved the problem in 2 or 3 days.

That's great but it don't work for everyone, I sufferers with dry lips for years, vaseline did nothing at all. I learnt a trick from James welsh is to use very gentle chemical exfoliant of my lips once a week and that keeps my cracked lips away, I can now use any cream to compliment that but using a cream alone never worked for me.

This video is fantastic! I’m going to actually share it with my patience because you literally, and much more articulately, convey the truth about these products. And I absolutely love that you refer to petroleum jelly as your favorite if you times in the video. I don’t know if you saw the publication out of I think annals of allergy or JACI where they did a comparison of the various ointments and pet was #1. I haven’t seen any of your other videos, but I have a good feeling that you and I have the same mindset so I’m really looking forward to seeing some of the videos and incorporating the links in my patient instructions. Thank you for taking the time to do all these evidence based educational vlogs! It’s really refreshing to see a dermatologist or any healthcare professional speaking about commercial products but not on behalf of some company but just rather the science.
You had me when you whipped out the tub of petroleum jelly! “Ok now I know this woman is legit” (I think the viewers reading that last comment might be thinking, “this guy is a total weirdo“ but I think you totally understand where pet advocating means i’m listening to someone who’s an evidence-based provider). I’ve only seen one video but I hope the others will also meet such high EBM standards!

Environmental footprint is something to be aware of, though. Plastic is a huge problem, and more companies should be looking into better packaging. But we also need to understand where our products are actually coming from. In other words, if a product claims to be eco-friendly, look into the company producing it to see how they make that product.
