The look on Ruyi's face when the emperor says he hopes she'll assume her role managing the harem, accept the treasure back, and him saying he'll wait for her says it all. She's not going to do any of that. She doesn't love him anymore, but she doesn't hate him either. She's just indifferent. She knows he'll never change and she just wants to be free of it all. The poem she recited definitely has multiple meanings. She told him their love blossomed and then wilted. And that their time together has past and wished him well in the future. She knows she's dying, and if he had paid more attention to her, he might have realized she was ill.
Her final words to him are “take care on the road ahead”. She was not just talking about his trip to the hunting grounds. The emperor once told her that he was lonely and wanted her to walk step by step to his side and be together going forward. She is telling him that she’ll no longer be by his side, the future road is now one which he will have to walk alone, and to take care. The emperor said he didn’t understand why Ruyi didn’t tell him she was dying but little did he know she clearly did. He’s just unable to understand the meaning of her goodbye anymore because he’s long forgotten what he had asked of her in the past and how much she has faithfully stood by, and stayed true to such a burdensome promise. He was always so occupied with either looking behind his shoulder out of misdirected suspicion and paranoia, distractedly gawking at what’s in front of him because he’s drooling over a woman or when he’s looking for someone to blame for his own selfishness, or looking at himself as he indulges his ridiculously infantile narcissism, and self centered love. He never looked beside himself so he never noticed and never appreciated that Ruyi had been patiently walking next to him the entire time. As an emperor who must spend his entire life stuck in a place like the Forbidden Palace, her genuine love and sincerity toward him was something he should have realized was more valuable than gold and yet he ended up treating it so cruelly and thoughtlessly, no better than garbage. Ruyi spent a lifetime devoting herself to a promise that in the end, meant nothing to that person. As the politics and cruelty of the palace slowly wear out each character, the truest inner nature of each of them is slowly revealed. When we finally see what really lies under everyone’s ‘mask’ and what’s left after the palace intrigue has worn away all the pretense, we as viewers see that under all of Ruyi’s gorgeous jewelry and opulent dresses was unwavering dignity and of course a pure soul and sincere heart of even greater beauty and value. Whereas, under Qianlong’s mask of a virtuous and responsible ruler is revealed a small and ugly man completely empty of accountability and filled with nothing but self love and insecurity. Beneath Jin Yuyan’s cunning and viciousness, was simply a woman in love and in pain because she was blinded by her unrequited affection for a man who only ever saw her as a tool to use. Buried under Hailan’s initial timidness and cowardice was unwavering and unconditional friendship and loyalty. Hidden under Wei Yanwan’s clever coquettish acting and words of flattery was disloyalty, ingratitude, and most of all, opportune greed and wickedness. The writing and character development in this story are just so beautiful yet so, so heartbreaking.
The main reason why ruyi avoided seeing other concubines was that she knows that she has tuberculosis and others can get it so she didn't meet anyone even at the end of her life she was taking care of everyone
Not only did she protect them, but she also found solace in her confinement. I think she didn't miss the mannerisms of the harem at all... apart from the actual people , she missed nothing of the sort.
Ruyi's words to the emperor when he urges her to forget all the terrible wrongs of the past that had been done to her. "They are just faint memories to me" she says. He thinks she is prepared to forget and forgive. In truth, she is parting with all that fight, hate, intrigue and blood of his harem. She is leaving everything, including her love to him. She is preparing to die. Nothing earthly matters to her now. She has also crossed him out of her soul and leaves him behind, just a "faint memory". Fantastic script and superb acting. This gave me goosebumps.
He never “begs her for forgiveness” he basically says “it happened, it’s over, suck it up and forget about it and move on”. Begging for forgiveness would require him to admit he was wrong and to care more about her than his own pride-but he is too weak a man to do any of that.
I watched some behind-the-scenes videos for this series recently. Apparently, Wallace Huo, the actor who played Qianlong, started crying and cried for a full two minutes while filming this scene because he felt just how horrible his character had been to Ruyi, and it felt like he, Wallace, was the one speaking to Ruyi instead of Qianlong.
Watching this scene over and over again makes you truly realize that he really didn't deserve ruyi. She had stayed true to him the entire damn time but he lost her the moment he first started believing any and all rumors about her. From killing the royal children to having an illicit affair with Ling yunche... if he was that suspicious why did he ask her to be the empress in the first place, ya know?
All her children were killed, by this prostitute whom the emperor has been bedding through his reign, the whole legitimate children were killed by Yanwan the whore
He made her empress for political reasons 1.she didn't have her own child at the time of becoming empress so she would devote her time to all his children equally 2. Her clan was not a powerful clan so she could not have used her clan influence to affect him or his reign

That was actually one of the very few times she was loved and cared about by the entire harem.. :( a true motherly figure
Everytime I see that scene where she bids him take care on the road ahead. And then the little curtsey she held on at the end as her own farewell because she knows it's the last time they'll ever see each other again. It has me crying everytime.
Throughout everything, not once did I ever heard of Qianlong saying, "Ruyi, I'm sorry. I apologize for everything that I have done (to you)". All I heard was, "Ruyi, I'm the emperor, I'm the leader of the world. Past is past, you don't need to blame me, forget about it and move on". Some things shall not be forgotten even when one moves on. He lost both Qingying and Ruyi.
When Ruyi took her last breath, I couldn’t believe she was really gone and instantly want her back so that things could be alright again. Even as an audience, the acting, writing and production have made it so immersive that you felt like you are Ruyi and can actually feel her bleeding pain. I ugly cried throughout the last episode and I don’t think I have ever done that much for a drama. It wasn’t a momentary sadness but instead it was a true deep cry in mourning for Ruyi, not just for her death but her whole life. For how she was to herself, the emperor and to others, for what she went through, what she lost and gained. In a period and position where she couldn’t just drop everything and walk away not even by suicide, this natural death was really welcomed by her. If she hadn’t had the illness, she would’ve suffered more by having to continue being in a loveless marriage and being the empress as if everything never happened. It’s really bittersweet, I feel like I will forever be in mourning for her.
She still watered that tree till the end and she is wearing his jade bracelet he gave her. She was forgiving everyone as she prepared to die. When you know it’s all about to end you stop looking for fights and holding grudges because that’s not baggage you want to take with you. She finally saw the man he really was and it wasn’t much of a man so she let all the pain he caused her go. The anger he caused, the gaslighting the lies he told the loneliness he put her thru and the ppl he killed “ to defend her honor.” She saw that in the end of life it was all nothing. We live the best we can and then we die. She made peace. And greeted her children and old friends in the hereafter.
I realise it now that by burning her portrait she just freed herself of a title she never wanted. She didn't want to be remembered as an Empress, but as herself and herself only.

rewatching this I just realized that Ruyi's time in the show began in the springtime and ended in autumn, calling back to her last words to the emperor
Odd to me how the Emperor's most animated reaction was being offended that Ling had intended to interfere with the royal bloodline... Also odd to me is that he kept allowing Ling to keep defending herself, weaving this tale and that, & listening to her.
Yes...Even though he'd already caught her absolutely trying to set her son set up as future Ruler, he listened to her quick-thinking excuses; I mean, what the Emperor had already caught her doing, that alone was a killing offense, so for what purpose, then, did he allow Ling to keep making excuses as to this issue? She was then exposed as having been behind the murders of his children, her own mother & all the rest, & still he let her keep pointing her fingers at everyone else. I still recall how this Emperor treated Ruyi after Ling & Yu & (his) the bodyguard's wife tried to implicate Ruyi but came up empty- insulting, vicious, and implacable...No respect for Ruyi then, whatsoever.
Yes, I remember seeing another video about this scene where it doesn't do the long skip. It said that had the empress Dowager not walked in when she did, it was very likely that Ling would have gotten away with it or at least avoided death and serious punishment. It was Ruyi essentially getting involved with the Dowager's support that made it clear to him that she was in the wrong, regardless of what she said. However, I will say, I think the reason why he was more willing to forgive Ling is because of how women in the Harem act vs Ruyi. Ruyi at no point begs and pleads and throws herself at his mercy. There is no histerics. The harem women will cry and beg and throw suspicion if not completely expose others. Her willingness to be held accountable was something he didn't know how to handle, especially as more scheme were unearthed, so like the rest of her truly sincere behavior, he took it as disrespectful and indignation.
Only people who commit grave unjust against you say "these things are in the past", trouble is you cannot wipe the memory clean. Once you have done something bad to harm or hurt someone it cannot be undone or unsaid. You can forgive but you will never forget.
When I came to this part of the Drama .. the ending. My heart fell into my stomach and I just balled like a baby. She went through so much blame and torment ... especially by him. Yet he asks her to forget the past .. not think about it or take it to heart. F-That ... He didn't deserve her ... She didn't deserve in anyway shape or form to be treated the way she was by him and others. He shouldn't have allowed it PERIOD!!! To me he was just a Horney Cad .. that only cared about himself and believed only what he wanted to hear. When I hear that Royal men were like this or even Royal woman .. It's sickening & truly pathetic.
If he had met someone as evil and corrupt as Ling, the emperor would have undoubtedly put Ruyi into a turmoil again. And it’s a total disgrace that he thinks she will put up with his bs all the time. Thank goodness she stood her ground and knew what to do. Yes, it probably hurt her soul but it needed to be done.
The song that comes to mind when I think about who Ruyi was is “These little wonders” by Rob Thomas. It’s such a touching song and describes her personality perfectly. Ruyi had the perfect makings of an Emperor. It’s just sad that women weren’t allowed to rule back in those days. Hongli was such an embarrassment as a ruler and as a man. I couldn’t stand his whining and indecisiveness. He let women with lower status manipulate and play him for a fool.
A sincere apology would've gone a long way. I think she held out hope for at least that...one last glimpse of her Hongli 💔😢💔 When he walked up on her, it was as if she felt an evil presence. 😢
When he said the past is the past, he didn't sougth that he was in the past that she didn't love him anymore, she really forgot the past they lies and the promises that he promises to her.
She's an amazing artist. You can feel all the emotions. Kudos to director as well. These last scenes of her are well done. You can feel each and every emotion just by watching her.
Loved how she indirectly tells him that she doesn't love him anymore. He should have gotten the memo that she was done when she cut her hair. He had so many trust issues, there is no fixing that.😢
The most important message Ruyi gave to Qianlong. "If you didn't value me when I was alive, I don't want you to in my death." Ruyi cut her hair. I'm separating from you. I cropped my photo. I don't want to be by your side anymore. poem. From now on you will be alone. Letter to the son. I got rid of my biggest disease "QIANLONG THE EMPEROR"
The look on his face when he realizes that Ruyi isn’t buying his BS anymore and he can keep his earthly treasures. You can’t buy love. As old as he is, he still hadn’t learned that. Ruyi was a prisoner of his fairy tales. She did the right thing to die on her own terms to be rid of him forever. I know her pain. I am a survivor of the same maltreatment. In life we have to take care of ourselves by loving ourselves enough to walk away from BS. It’s not our responsibility to change a person. You can only change you. The heart of a man is fickle in his youth, but woe to him that ages and never atone for his mistakes. Good riddance and hope he gets old and dies alone.
Muy bien Ruyi. Mujer, fuerte, digna, adorable y leal. Hermosa mujer, adorable y Digna Emperatriz....
He didn’t beg for nothing he told her the past is the past and to move on and forget it! He didn’t apologized for his actions over the years that caused his wife pain, betrayal and abandonment. He pretty much told her just to let it go what’s done is done!!! He’s an arrogant S! O! B! his women murdered his wife children and he did nothing about it because he didn’t care or believed her!!!
Well finally I understand what was going on at the ending of the relationship between Ruyi and the Emperor, and it was just that, the end. And it's really kind of sad . I don't mean that it was sad because Ruyi stopped loving him because I don't think she did, but sad because she waited so many years before she stopped loving him unconditionally.
Wow he never beg for forgiveness actually he never say sorry after all he have done to her, he never regret all the humiliation he made for her.. he trust his mistress than his wife.. because of pride, he only thought of himself nothing more nothing less..
Yes, in the beginning is a beautiful thing but you are the one who let it fall or die because the way you treated your Empress. You abuse her tremendously. Where are your beloved consorts and concubine. You do not need Ruyi and Ruyi doesn’t need you.
I really loved this compilation. The translation/subtitles are great. I've watched several videos and it's only now that I truly understand what that last phrase about their marriage meant. Thank you.

In the end Ruyi got tired. She's tired of always being compromised. She's tired of always being speculated about her faithfulness. She served faithfully but the Emperor didn't notice it. He expects that after all that happened Ruyi will accept the scroll and treasures of an Empress? No, she's tired. Even if I was in her shoes, to be with a man like the Emperor, I won't.
Although all the terrible things that woman did, he never demoted her until she died. To Ruyi, he snatched her scroll, limit her authority and threaten to depose her. I am so glad Ruyi stood up to him til the end after she cut her hair. The Chinese ancient culture were sick to my stomach. Emperor owns all the people. And women were treated very unfairly. I dislike royal family traditions. I am not saying Ruyi should hold grudge against him but I am glad she remembers how she was treated after all. I love the part she cut her picture off from the painting. In the end he got abandon which he did not want people to know. 👏👏👏👏
Going back to the testimony of the concubine's brother, it sounds like the death of Ruyi's daughter came down to the simple fact that she and the young prince swapped clothing before going out into the garden. The Young prince was supposed to wear the red clothes and the girl, the green ones, but both preferred the others', and as both sets were of equal quality, Ruyi saw no issue with the swap. It's clear now that the dog had been conditioned to attack the individual wearing the red set of clothes: from the sound of it, he was trained to go by scent rather than colour, and it was the red set of garments that were scented with Rhododendron flower perfume. The young prince was meant to be the target: thanks to childish preference, and a mother's wish to please both children, it was Ruyi's daughter who died.
Well it shows how a fine actor is until you're hated even if it's only that character portrayed... Then you've mastered the art. As to how beloved Ruyi is even to her actress... This show is in essence a masterclass...
He says the same thing he does every time she's been compromised. She doesn't leave her Palace because she doesn't feel safe out there.. when everybody's trying to kill her including him.

I hope Ruyi will not forgive him. He never apologize to her. His famous line is”I know you been compromised”. He never admitted his mistakes to her.
Amen 🙏🏽
It still exist with our politicians. Nothings changed.
The Emperor treated her so bad and it is his fault she got sick. Ruyi was loyal to him and loved him with everything she had.

Do not forgive him Ruyi, what he did to you is unforgiveable.
He really doesn't deserve forgiveness!
He doesn't even apologize properly.
When he said the past is the past, he didn't sougth that he was in the past that she didn't love him anymore, she really forgot the past they lies and the promises that he promises to her.
Just tragic. She suffered so and he never even comforted her.

"If you didn't value me when I was alive, I don't want you to in my death."
Ruyi cut her hair.
Well....he dies alone...

Muy bien Ruyi. Mujer, fuerte, digna, adorable y leal.
Hermosa mujer, adorable y Digna Emperatriz....
Ruyi finalmente es libre
Gg
Wow he never beg for forgiveness actually he never say sorry after all he have done to her, he never regret all the humiliation he made for her.. he trust his mistress than his wife.. because of pride, he only thought of himself nothing more nothing less..
i bet she was like "go away and give me peace please" in the inside. poor ruyi
Yes, in the beginning is a beautiful thing but you are the one who let it fall or die because the way you treated your Empress. You abuse her tremendously. Where are your beloved consorts and concubine. You do not need Ruyi and Ruyi doesn’t need you.
Her last bow to him. A final goodbye.

I agree. The worst was he did after the rumors with Ruyi and Li Yuchen. Such an ass!
watched this scenes 4x already but still each line of Ruyi goes into my heart and it hurts:-(
😭💔
Yeah, its their love story but it is us who feel the heartbreak 😭😭
This story has a sad ending but the emperor deserved it for all the heartaches he gave to Ruyi.
Me too
Already saw it 6 times n still loved it
Even though I am sad for her I am happy she had last laugh.
she looked at birds fly in the sky, and she's smiling ..she feels that birds a so free
It is one of the best dramas ever o have seen
Oh QianLong.

Ruyi, fuerte y estoica frente a toda adversidad. Adiós HongLi, hasta nunca QianLong.
The reality of this ending...stopped loving the man who abused her! And left!! 👍💯❣️
Hailan learned the game well
...and forgot none of the injustices done! Turns out Hailan had the one thing Ruyi lack...vindictiveness.☠️☠️☠️😈
Aww you cut out the Empress Dowager 's uppercut flawless victory scene....
Well it shows how a fine actor is until you're hated even if it's only that character portrayed... Then you've mastered the art. As to how beloved Ruyi is even to her actress... This show is in essence a masterclass...
After he humiliated her you think she going to forgive him fortgetted, he treat her like a shit due he believed others not her now she feels free
Great ending!
He says the same thing he does every time she's been compromised. She doesn't leave her Palace because she doesn't feel safe out there.. when everybody's trying to kill her including him.

I despise this drama the Emperor treated her so badly through their entire marriage. He found every way he could to humiliate and punish her.
