The scene where Ruyi is secretly gorging on sour foods just slays me. It's like a kid reading comic books under the covers by flashlight. The stakes are higher, but it's still hilarious.
Also cute is Li Yu reporting the news of the prince to the Emperor. He looks happier then the Emperor! (Who of course was too surprised to react fully.)

Throughout her pregnancy, Ruyi has this mischievous air about her. You can see it in the grin she gives Rongpei as she pats her mom on the back while she's choking from the spicy food. And when Rongpei holds the lamp while Ruyi is eating the sour apricot and talking, it reminds me of kids at a sleepover whispering and giggling together while staying up way past their bedtime. It's really sweet to see how Rongpei is more than just a maid, she's a friend and confidante to Ruyi, just like how Suoxin was.
All Ruyi wanted was the Emperor's love as he promised and a Palace full of children and grandchildren.

I understand the stakes now after watching a few of these series. these women aren't just fighting for themselves to get a better station in life by giving the emperor children, they are fighting for their families too. Every success grants favour to their entre clan, every failure and punishment is shared by their families, and once the emperor is gone, these concubines can only rely on the value of their children to save them. Look at all the women in the cold palace when Ruyi was first sent there. she is told they are all the former emperors old unimportant concubines, sent their to die after his death. that's likely the fate of many women in the harm of the emperor. Only the dowager is truly safe which is why all these women, who come to this place when they are only 14/15/16 have to fight so hard against one another to provide the true heir.
It was always like this with empires that emperors had harems, sadly.
No no, the ones sent to the cold palace are most of the crazy/evil/wronged concubines. Obviously not every concubine the past emperor had would suddenly go to the cold palace. They mostly live in a separate place away from the current concubines and some get sent to the temple to become “monks”

Why on earth....I mean in the name of all that's reasonable WHY would they think Ruyi would knowingly accept ANYTHING from Jia?
To send it openly like that, it would be suicide for Jia to have poisoned it. It would be too easily traced back to her. There is also scenes where any food sent to to Emperor or Empress is tasted first by poison testers. If they'd have dropped or become sick after eating it, Jia would have been executed.
