It is so good to hear again the classic modest straight-forward balanced way of interpretation and performance by Pierre Hantai: one can hear Bach himself, without performance's mannerism of overshadowing the composer, which unfortunately some performers do. In addition, by good registration, right choice of tempo for each movement, and inventive personal trills in the repetitions - Hantai gives us most delightful, warm-hearted musical experience. I thank him and NBS for uploading.
@@MitchBoucherComposer yeah it is kinda similar, like it says in the description: "Bach deliberately starts the Allemande with a simple form: arpeggios that gradually shift in harmony. It is reminiscent of the first prelude in the Wohltemperirte Clavier" so not too unique In my opinion this is better, but again it might be because of the beautiful playing and sound of instrument :D Because the key is the same too and it is Bach lol
I always admire the old church architectural backgrounds within which you often set your musical offerings. I’d bet their histories are equally as excellent to learn.
Jahrhundert!
A beautiful french suite with my (as usual) favorite gigue, virtuosically and passionately performed by french harpsichordist Pierre Hantai, who fell in love with Johann at the age of ten,(just like me) 🙂 Bravo for the excellent Pierre just like for the unique Netherlands Bach Society 🎵😌🎶
This is a piece I dearly love, and what a pleasure to hear it played by someone who intentionally places each note so eloquently in time. Elegant, beautiful and moving.
Wonderful. The performance really shows that this is music that exists spontaneously, in the moment that it's performed... There's no definitive performance. Pity that here in NZ the classical radio station rarely plays JSB keyboard works on the instruments they were written for. Such a pleasure to listen to NBS recordings!
The sound engineering is fantastic. Tell us more about this grape of mikes on just one stick!
500 iscritti ogni giorno.
This is a genuine perspective on this marvellous work; I am revisiting this piece and this performance is very illuminating. I prefer to go a tad faster in the Allemande and a tad slower in the Courante, as it’s very difficult to sustain on the grand piano otherwise.
Wonderful rendition! Pianists need so much to hear/study with harpsichordists...! Bach didn't write for piano, never imagined its aesthetics, which is romantic. We often tend to do pianistic cliches on Bach's music, without even realizing it!
Ever heard of the clavichord? Are you aware of its capabilities? It was Bach's preferred instrument. Few of his keyboard works specify harpsichord. Listen to the many clavichord performances on RUclips of his works. The sound of what we'd recognize as a modern piano didn't even exist until around 1870, which was about half a century after Beethoven's death.
The wonderfully overlapping touch this player exhibits, especially apparent in the Allemande is REALLY HARD to achieve. Back in the day when I studied Cembalo playing I would have given all the tea in china to be able to play like this. Bravo!
great performance, good ornaments. i don't know how, but i feel a very " straight and square " tempi, i miss some roundness, some "spirit of dance" but it's just me....
@@WinrichNaujoks yes he does, and the clavicord and the fortepiano, he said it in various interviews he just never play them in public. He did do several concerts on a forte piano. I just think that Schiff is such a master of Bach its a shame.
Gosh no! Koopman hacks all instruments apart, and Schiff's playing is as boring and monotonous as his talking. Hantai is fantastic. Just my opinion though. Each to their own.
Hi there! Ornaments and tempi are a question of taste of course, but Hantaï most definitely played this in the right key! In our recordings, we try to use tunings that Bach may have used. At different points in time Bach's instruments were tuned to a lower or higher pitch than ours, and we do our best to approximate the historical circumstances in our recordings. It can be so refreshing to hear something in a "new" old way!

Brilliantly true! "Only a musician who has nothing to prove..."

@@gabriel_kyne robert has some fantastic recordings too, good recommendation.
The French Suites are my favourite harpsichord works by Bach. Full of amazing melodies and harmony
Mr. Hantai, I am grateful to have been invited to witness this majestic trance of this glorious Bach's suite
Superb from the moment Pierre Hantaï placed his fingers on the keyboard. Thanks

why is Bach so great...this just is other worldly
A majestic rendition of this marvelous masterpiece. The opening is wonderfully peaceful and the ending a joyful dance. What more can you ask for 🎵
what more? hugs!
beautiful! And good execution
Allemande 815 is so beautiful 😌💕
So peaceful, I feel like i am In heaven🙏🏻
especially at the beginning sounds like we as listeners are entering the heaven the bass of this harpsichord helps it too..
Am I the only one who finds correlation with this opening allemande, and that of the the cello suite in E flat, BWV 1010?

remarkable recorded sound! Compliments. (Not to mention the wonderful playing :) ) And what an INCREDIBLE instrument!
I love the meditative, lyrical and nuanced first movement, so different from some of the frenetic versions out there.
Such a wonderful performance of one of my favorite French suites. I love the ornaments Hantaï made!
Eccellente esecuzione .Sempre piacevole ascoltare Hantai.

Heavenly.
