Stellaris - Here Be Dragons Mechanics (Now with even MORE dragons)

- Here Be Dragons is one of the two Origins that have been added with the Aquatic Species Pack. It can be a be daunting, so I've pulled the code apart as is tradition to give you the ability to better understand the mechanics behind this one. It's very much a role playing Origin with a lot of cool endgame results. Still, in order to get the most out of it you'll need to know what's going on. So sit back, relax, and enjoy some Space Dragons.
ASpec's videos are based around the popular Grand Strategy Game; Stellaris as well as other fun science fiction properties. Delve into a galaxy that is both dark and full of secrets. This channel has tons of guide, overviews, musing and other content for you to enjoy in the semi-classic game review format. So stick around, grab a drink. Some of this content was heavily inspired by the likes of TheSpiffingBrit, RimmyDownUnder and GrayPlays. Other content is similar to that what you would find on let's play channels like The Yogscast.

Who cares If the Dragons are weaker than your endgame fleets? IT'S A FREAKING FLEET OF SPACE DRAGONS, I've never heard anything cooler than that. Style > Strategy.
@@Aldatas It keep getting better, literally purging worlds in DRAGONFIRE.
Now, if only they'd back off on the Living Metal cost....
Dragon + Become a Crisis will be OP combo. The Star Earter has at least 30k fleet power. Roam out and destroy civilization at the beginning of mid game and later adds 2 star eaters to strengthen the power. Focus all minerals to menance ships to protect your main fleet.
Tbh Morrigi from sword of the Stars are also space dragpns. But those dragons fly their own space ships
Just get em before year 80 and it fixes the problem of not end game worthy.
Come all you young spacefarers, listen to me, I'll sing you a song of our fish from the sea.
And its windy weather boys stormy weather when the wind blows then we're all to gether
Crazy I was just listening to this song!! I havent watched the video yet so idk if its mentioned in the video or not
Boys blow ye winds fringeward, blow ye winds blow. Out to the galaxy steady she goes
Ah , a fellow AC blackflag player 🏴☠️
We're whalers on the moon
We carry a harpoon
"Up comes the Great Dragon in search of our home,
Through space to a place that's beneath waves and foam!"
My friends lost their collective shit when my dragon joined my empire. I went from inferior to overwhelmingly overnight.
A definite "Oh Crap!" moment if there ever was one! XD And then you have the potential to end up with a total of *TEN* of the damn things! If the *one* dragon wasn't incentive enough for your enemies to want to "Enemy Mine" you into oblivion really damn quick, the prospect of you eventually having up to ten of the things at your beck and call certainly would be. This Origin may actually play right into my preferred play-style, as I like to spend the early game just "turtling up" and heavily fortifying my core systems while otherwise expanding slowly, so the Space Dragon Origin would play into that kind of play-style pretty well.
@@gamester512 I literally got this game yesterday, but I think I have to try out dragons after I do my first complete playthrough. 10/10 game.
this is so so good for a spirtualist RP who worship the dragons as gods i mean its outright PERFECT for it plus they are older then the universe in stellaris lore so they are few more impressive a thing to worship in game
Its also maybe lore logic about how at beginning the civilization cannot contact with Dragon anymore. Because in the past the one can do that is the one has psychic ability. When unlock transcendence they have psychic and can reestablished contacts again.
I did the sacrifice civic along with this origin because blood for the dragon god.
older than the universe but cant beat my Corette spam
I WAS THINKING OF THIS TOO
@@MrDUCKMAN5555 with old age comes weakness unfornately only those with acess to alot of food avoid weaking even further.
Well, the Ether Drake is one of my favorite things in Stellaris, so this origin looks great to me-wait wait wait, you can _raise baby space dragons?!?_ *Must. Have!*
They can do a warp jump and you can also bombard worlds with them
Teleport to some star you don't like and start purging worlds in DRAGONFIRE.
What in the fuck could possibly be cooler than massive space dragons that can basically tear a hole in reality, fight a war in space and burn entire planets to the ground
I'm getting this as soon as I can lmao
(Also I have a soft spot for things that look terrifying but are actually adorable or vice versa, so... Baby space dragons. Y E S.)
Remember that in order to build them, you HAVE to find the Living Metal research anomaly. Otherwise you’ll never be able to unlock the tech you need to harvest the natural deposit they spawn, which is _required_ in order to make more dragons.
For that reason you want a LOT of research ships crewed by scientists with the Meticulous trait and focus the Discovery traditions.
@@OneBiasedOpinion That's really helpful, thanks. I got it serendipitously, and am now building my own fleet of adorable baby space dragons.
@@philadelphus3570 praise be. 🤲
There seems to be one significant problem with this origin: while it guarantees the living metal, they seem to have forgotten to make certain that you get the tech needed to mine it...
It'd be kind of broken to be guaranteed to have/find that tech by the time you finish your ascension path. Not only you'd have an army of those dragons early game, but you'd then have living metal for the mega-structure edict by the time you unlock the next ascension perk, which would give you a big jump-start in mega-structure construction.
@@iamdanieloliveira you need the living metal tech which unless you find a second deposit of living metal you have no way to get the tech, this means you can play the game for 300 years and have no access to the drakes. At this time the origin is RNG garbage.
@@david1aimeepr 300 years? bro by the 70'th year i usually finished the tech tree.
@@david1aimeepr I agree that you could get lucky or extremely unlucky with the RNG. A better solution would've been to just require a ton of alloys instead of living metal. This would guarantee that you could access them while at the same time not being free, requiring you to do some work yourself.
@@SuperExodian I don't think you understand how the living metal tech works.
it has a 0% chance, the only way you get it is from randomly finding a space anomaly
Here Be Dragons isn't actually an SCP term in the first place. It's actually a term in the Middle Ages where people would spread false rumors about dragons living in unexplored areas.
Yeah but the SCP one was the one to popularize it
Edit: Didn't know its meaning when I first commented. Thanks to all those who kindly corrected me instead of insulting me and says I'm crying about it when I try to talk back
That reminds me of those giant monsters that appear on the sea of ancient maps.
@@johnnyblaze1362 the 2 are both derived from the same concept
@@Brother_O4TS not really its been a widely known and used phrase for hundreds of years
@@vonfaustien3957 But I never knew it. I only heard of that from the SCP. That's what I meant by it popularized it
This is one of the best origins in the entire game. Amazing.
Because, if anyone starts something, you can say 'F Off I Have Dragons'.
@@cardboardcrafter2482 I held in a single laugh to this.
well th dragon can die easily to corvette spam with plasma /torpedoes
These days I refuse to play without mods. And I go for EVERYTHING possible. If I can add it to my fleets I will go out of my way to do so. Even if it's not very good. From the simple amoeba, to the automated dreadnaught, the ship in the gas giant, titans, drakes, psionic avatars you name it. I want them all. Just for the sake of having one massive diverse fleet. (Add gigastructural engineering to the list and you truely become unstoppable.)
And then then all the asteroids in your empire into guns to make anyone who isn't rolling in with an attack moon regret their life choices.
@@braith117 Exactly. Course even if they do the system craft should more than take care of it.
Ah, a Gigastructure afficinado
@@A_Spec Indeed. Now if only I could more efficiently run the game so I could have large galaxies where that massive army and insane amount of giga weapons can actually be put to use before all the empires just beg to become my vassels due to vast inferiority. But hey that's what all crisis at once mods are for.
The giga mod is just way too much power though
Question: Is it possible to revive small dragons? In theory, they should be considered guardians, right? If yes, then this opens up interesting possibilities: will there be no limit on the number of undead dragons?
Another question: the dragon descended to eat, the planet received a deposit, and at that moment, another empire took over your home system. Time passes, the deposit disappears, and the dragon appears... on whose side? On the side of the owner of the system, or on the side of the one who chose the origin? In the first case, will the enemy empire itself start a chain of dragon children? In the second case, it will appear in the original system, or in the one where the new capital is now located (which in theory allows you to move the dragon)?
@@user-fz6tk1uz1g I'd presume it just ends the chain, since mostly likely they'd have to kill your dragon to take your home world.
@@HazzronIV Thats the thing, it dissapears when it becomes the modifier.
@@user-fz6tk1uz1g The wiki says that if the planet gets invaded, the dragon will stop eating and defend the system.
@@LeonhardWelebny aw... Obvious, but a bit anti-climactic.
An undead pirate build would be great with this. The gameplay implications of pirates fighting a dragon and killing it only to resurrect it would be awesome
So space vampire coast from warhammer
so vampire coast in spess ?
@@Ruzaraneh YES!!
If you ever get the Gigantic Skeleton anomaly, you can also reanimate *THAT* as a fairly strong ground army in the early game (it has about 150 power just by itself).
all hail, the mighty

with tattered sails and incredible tales
we're caught in endless seas
The inability to be able to mine liquid metal can be a TOTAL cock block on building the Fledglings. I hope they make a change on this soon(tm). Thanks for the info!
So it's possible to get a baby ether drake, 10 l drakes and now 11 sky dragons. That's 22 dragons you could possibly get with this latest expansion. Here be dragons indeed.
As reanimators you could also get the adult ether drake and Shard right?
@@formosaetc.8024 that makes 24, can the voidspawn be reanimated as well? If so a fleet of 25 dragons would basically steamroll everything in its path.
You can also get void spawn and the L drakes
Honestly by that point every empire in the galaxy would just rename your home system as "Hic Sunt Dracones" and avoid it like the javorian pox
@@anonguy772 lol
The Next dlc shall be Dragon Races that doesn't need standard planets but planets with hostile (to anything living) environments or dead worlds. Each solar system can only house one dragon unless its a mated Pair. ( You know each dragon has its land and its horde of precious minerals and items.)
Planets or moons may need to be blown up to make asteroid belts to lay eggs. Other species can be mated with to make up armies and to create half-dragon races that need void craft This should be the only way they can take over other species planets without exterminating everything using breath attacks or hurling asteroids at planets.
ALL dragons is automatically titan class ships (or higher) and can only equip one weapon type (1.Claws 2.Breath. 3.Teeth 4.Tail 5.Scale 6.Bloodline/Element)
This dlc update will include more void based fauna and creatures for the dragons to hunt and/or farm. The other species may find more food options at the cost of an army on a hunt and weapon ideas to use against the dragons as majority of their early weapons will be pointless
That sounds OP to say the least
@@postomnis6134 Yeah that when they add the Elder and Ancient Gods who want to exterminate the first race Known as Dragons and will super boost any large civilization near the dragons or hostile to the dragons and after the dragons are dead or pushed back from a system they turn on their worshipers or holy wars begin
There can not be enough Dragons ... Dragons are absolutely the best species and highest form of existence ... give me alll the DRAGONS!

Now I want a Draconids species pack.🔥🐲
@@johnnyblaze1362 of course you do... Everyone should want that... Dragons are the best
Why not hybridized draconic soldiers? Or a draconic trait that increases life span and some other stat?
@@HazzronIV because we need REAL dragons!
Ah so it does work.
Now those 11, the lone normal dragon, the L Dragons . .
You could have a pretty damn sizeable fleet of just dragons.
Correct
Dragon army
Now I just have to mix these with the L-drakes and the infant and I'll have the ultimate dragon fleet.
with the stability boost do you think a defensive merchant build would work well? Anglers also get trade value and I think if you got catalytic processing down the line it could be really good
I don't see why not, pitch me a build
@@A_Spec I actually was playing with that build set too. Anglers and Merchant Guild civic. Fanatic Xenophile for trade boost, authoritarian just because i was tired of always picking materialist+egalitarian.
Then thrifty is the only mandatory biological trait.
@@jaredh7706 so in gameplay terms, an authoritarian merchant republic focused on fishing? Kinda like a fisherman's version of Venice or Lanfang?

I vaguely recall a Mod that dealt with Dragons by giving them a lifecycle and populating the galaxy with them.
You should be able to get the Dragon armor if you build/grow all ten of the drakes.
"Our shields can't repel firepower of that magnitude"
We need a stellaris RUclips war season 3
Gotta be best commentary and structure of dialogue also pushing the information I've ever seen in an informative RUclips video
Oops wrong video
I don't want to get spoiled, just dropped by to leave a like
Nice! Now I can as a necrophage player, have a Bahamut (Ether drake), a Tiamat (sky dragon), and a Cthulhu (Tiyanki matriach).
I like to think this Origin was an inspiration for the mod called Engineers of Life. Aside from letting you create primitive species on unihabited colonizable worlds that you can then uplift or whatever, with some new Ascension perks that grows into being able to genetically engineer all kinds of space dragons for your military, though it is capped at 8 per empire, which is probably reasonable.
I created a reptilian (the dragon-looking fellows) gestalt consciousness that saw itself as "part" of The Grand Sky Dragon. Funny enough I got the L drakes so by the endgame (using the vassal trick once) I had 25 dragons; Grand Momma, 20 hatchlings and 4 L drakes (the rest succumbed to the galaxy, sadly).
It was the Galactic Overdragon by the end, it was glorious.
Great overview!
Thank you, that was awesome, I didn't know any of that !
so i am currently doing a here be dragons build, and I took macharomancy ascension perk. and I reincarnated the shard dragon so Ima have two elder dragons. but this guide was huge for helping me do the path efficiently
I remember when I pleased the dragon enough to recruit it and the fucking Prikkiki-Ti next door to me went from superior fleet power to pathetic in a matter of moments.
and then you fed them to the dragon?
@@AkkaAlbatros Yese
Ocean man, take me by the hand. Take me back to the one planet challenge land...in the next video!
hope this is the start of allowing us to make living ships...but hay never bad to have dragons
I still want to build space squid or amoeba.
yes! no more normal ships only animals!!!!
I got a beautiful start with this origin, I have one way in my area and the living metal is in the same system as a planet
Can you provide advice on how to counter the dragons? It would be nice if you provide info on both how to use and fight an empire using the feature.
Machines don’t have ascension paths however can the synthetic age count towards that
He said going synth also counts so I assume so
earned a sub literally the best kid ever
This seems more like an event walkthrough than mechanics overview like the Ocean Paradise Mechanics video. I bring this up only because I don't think I heard any spoiler warnings here, I guess I'll continue watching after I've played with this origin.
The game spawns liquid metal without giving the tech, so THAT's why Stefan Anon couldn't spawn new dragons
Up comes the great dragon
In search of our home
From space, to a place
That's beneath waves and foam
Although I dont believe they have an issue with dragons, I do feel like they need to explore a few more of the creatures they talk about being in the void of space.
Also is really nice to note that if a necron fleet kills both the big dragon, and its fledglings, then you basically doom the galaxy to death...speaking of which, can a fledgling be resurrected as well?
I'd love it if they expanded upon the space whales some
@@thecrtf4953 That or the those flying germs/amoeba.
First giant dragon I encountered was the one that spawned after doing the archeology thing. Spooked me so much that I waited and hoarded techs and an armada up to mid-game just to kill it. IIRC, I have two titans during the fight against that dragon.
If you breed the dragon eggs and they are killed can they be researched for dragon armor?
As in can you potentially do both
Does it have impact on communications with other dragons, like Ether Drake and Shard?
Imagine seeing an undead space dragon flying towards you. Sounds terrifying.
I hope this start gets special interactions with the other space dragons.
Hi Aspec good vid thanks for sharing there are however a few questions:
1. I get that you cannot go the intrusive way as there is no even that comes up there after, this way you will need to kill the Dragon.... if this is incorrect please correct me.
2. Remote scan is the way to go and I get all the way to contact the D via sitrep /diplomacy
did all this only to be told ur no ready come back later....
I have the psi and trans 4 in total any help would be appreciated thanks
When you say 10 hatchlings max, is that spawned at one time or is that a flat total that you are able to spawn max?
7:03 Well, that explains why the drake didn't talk to me for about one hundred years after I scanned it... I never completed the ascension path...
I shall name it "The Executive Producer"
10 dragons vs my endless swarm of corvettes.
Played this origin in a Multiplayer game. Got the Drake on my side, but living Metal didn't generate anywhere else in the galaxy so I NEVER rolled the tech. It was still a pretty good run, but that was a bit of a let down. I really wanted the extra dragon helpers.
What do you mean by the society and engineering research? Just any tech in those fields, or something specfic?
You had me at dragon
Cant wait for more dragon stuff i hope i get to change my people into a dragon one day.
You know there's a Draconic species portrait.
It might be weird to have space dragons but if i remember correctly terry pratchets discworld while a fantasy novel is also technically a sci fi novel as the discworld is based on an alderson disk. Afterall sci-fi allows what fantasy novels have
Ah that reminded me of the mod: Playable Guardians... sadly it doesn't get updated at all anymore loved to have colorful either drakes :(
This is the reason I bought the expansion pack! DRAGONS! Woot!
Meanwhile, the fanatic purifier: "Yeah, I would eat that."
This creates very cool roleplay oportunity
I mean... your aquatic species literally had a living, breathing God that would visit every few years
quick question when i get six acension perks and all the speices have been discovered why can't i get the dragon i even got the last tradition spot and yet i can't get it but i didn't put the acension perk yet
Nothing better than a fleet of space dragons combined with undead space fauna my necromancers brought back...
I'm looking to Lathrix's video on this too.
I cant seem to get the living metal as a technology i picked this origin and im in the year 2431 and still nothing so i cant make the 10 baby dragons cause of it. any ideas on how to get the tech for living metal?
We still need more space dragons!
Looks like if the original dragon dies you can no longer hatch new ones, even if you have the building for it.
I was playing a match with my friend and i picked here be dragons and there was no living metal on the map at all let alone within two jumps it made it completely impossible for me to use my origin very sad.
Too bad guaranteed living metal either doesn't spawn or you don't get the tech for it, making it useless. Current game I started yesterday I even got the popup message saying I found living metal, and the node didn't even appear (:
1:28 It is documented in the origin list in the Stellaris wiki
I haven’t played Stellaris in nearly a year, but this makes me want to hop back in to play a spiritualist empire. Praise the dragon gods!
hi the new achievement There Be Dragons says that you need to Have 13 Fledgling Dragons and/or Sky Dragons in your capital system.
but how can I have 12 fledgling dragons since the cap is on 10?? HELP PLEASE
Indeed this will be my next playthrough. With necromancy, of course. My fleet will not only have Dragons, undead or not... but also Drakes 😁
I also want to try out Fallen Empire vassals that lend-lease fleets to the entire galaxy.
So far I've done:
- Ascendant Clone Army Cyborg Fanatic Purifiers Crisis - listed at the top because of the metric ton of fun it was - although it lacked some enjoyment in building; you'll never really get large planetary pops - that isn't forced labour of course. And the ending is _extremely_ anticlimatic. But beating the game on a huge galaxy before any Fallen Empire ever awoke was hectic but fun. Also I could had rather just wiped the entire galaxy but I wanted to see the ending. And there's the Red Button achievement I guess. Finishing the engine took longer than wiping the galaxy manually.
- Tropical Tree Hive Mind with Gaia Seeds - decently fun and have more flexibility in choices; you can also have slaves for some manipulation or destabilize enemies through expulsion
- Necrophage Necromancer Death Chroniclers that are Spiritualist - you will have a slow start but if you get the Neu-Baol precursor like I did then lol. Funny theme but being xenophobic really counteracts itself being Necrophage, sadly
- Machine Gestalt Consciousness on Shattered Ring start. Quite boring to be perfectly honest.
I also want to try: Full aquatic theme and with planetary "icers"
Complete pacifist isolationists, somehow
what's a planetary icer?
This works with Psionic ascension to right?
The crisis when *space dog* : panic
Hmm. Seems like it’d be fun to be the Crisis with.

My fish folk have become dragon farmers
can one create undead dragons from ones own dragons?
Can you build more than one hatchery and get more dragons (provided you have the supplies for them)?
Can you replace fallen young dragons by breeding new ones (resources permitting of course)?
If I understand this right, even late game the dragons have a niche in that they're more or less battleships that cost strategic resources instead of alloys, kinda like Phototropic which partially floats food upkeep to Energy Credit upkeep (Megacorps, take note: money doesn't grow on trees, but your trees do grow on money), Catalytic Processing floating your mineral costs for alloy to food costs (and with the Hydroponics bays being buffed at 10 food (+ tech bonuses) production), they only have an "up front" alloys cost for the hatchery to then partially "float" fleet costs to other resources?
You can replace them if they die, but can't have more than the cap at once.
@@Cthululululu So they are like I said "more or less battleship, but with their costs having been floated to an alternate resource". Legit. :)
