Scott Salem (Scott the Engineer) was a 30 plus year loyal employee and frequent on air member of stern’s staff. His wife of 30 plus years who also appeared on air occasionally was diagnosed with terminal cancer. Scott was forced to start a GoFundMe to help with the extreme expenses associated with her illness. Scott was trying to raise $50,000. Howard not only flat out refused to mention the GoFundMe to his audience, he penalized Scott for mentioning his fundraising efforts on other Sirius shows and social media. Howard took this as a direct insult. Rather than donate the 50k to Scott which is essentially pocket change to Howard, he demoted Scott and had him removed from the stern compound. Howard also scrubbed Scott from any and all show bits and would not allow his name to be mentioned by any staff member ever. Scott’s wife succumb to her illness and passed away. Even though Howard did everything in his power to prevent Scott from raising the money, the fans came through and Scott reached the 50k goal. Howard then instructed the despicable cult leader Marci Turk, who controls the entire current stern show content and staff, to fire Scott and eliminate his association with Sirius altogether. Howard is a truly vile human being.

Two reasons I'll always hate people that try to "reinvent their image" later in life is,
    1. This reinvention never comes when they are at their zenith of popularity. It always comes way after this are washed up in terms of popularity.
    2. Instead of making up for decades of being a piece of shit, they instead act like a moral arbiter choosing instead to criticize younger people who do the same dumb shit they once did. They literally pull up the ladder from younger people who haven't learned decades of lessons like they have.

If he’s that ashamed of his work, he could use his billions to buy back his catalog and have it taken out of public reach. Take it offline.
Do something that would actually be of personal cost to him. Instead, as you say, he continues to enjoy the fruit of his shameful labour while lecturing others about behaving shamefully.

I think one thing that inevitably led to his downfall was the massive increase in brash media figures as time went on. When Stern first hit the airwaves no one was as raw as he was, but these days he's just lost in an ocean of content creators who are more extreme than he ever would be. Regardless of what Stern does or say, his novelty is long gone in the modern Information Era.

    • @buffalo.blackk

      Wrong!
He moved to Sirius Radio. The content was behind a paywall with less only a couple million subscribers. He signed a $500M deal with Sirius over 5 years. And less than a year later RUclips was founded.
He chose the wrong platform. That was his downfall. Having a closed platform meant his show could not stay as big or continue to grow.

Hate to break it to you, but the mere mention of the N word wasn't verboten back then. It was never a classy word to say, but the fact we're saying "N word" instead of the actual word, is inspired by the Michael Richards on-stage meltdown. Black leaders insisted they don't ever want to hear the word spoken. Most of us are fine with that, what's one word out of our vocabulary to make peace with the word's ugliness.
Thing is, unless you were directing it at someone in particular, it wasn't a cancel situation back then. People could use it in all sorts of contexts, including skits. The Stern show wasn't unique in that respect. When Howard had Black community leaders on his show after the Richards rant, he agreed he would not mention the word on his show anymore, and all content with the word would no longer be played.
Hell, they used to intro post-breaks with really racist hillbilly music ("The house next door to me's been sold to N..."), it was a totally different time. The words that aren't allowed now, were contextually acceptable in all public media. What we call the "R word" was used by doctors on news broadcasts, the slurs of that time are forbidden words now.
Context is important. Back in the 60s & 70s, "blackface" was crude but not cancel-culture. Not saying things aren't better now, they are - but it wasn't malicious back then. Your grandparents' conversations in the old days would blow your hair back today.

Staffers that openly admitted to sexual assaults on air, There is a lot to his rise and fall (If anyone does a real breakdown it has to be 4+ hours(He only had that come to Jesus moment due to The #MeTooMovement) He knew he had a lot of skeletons in his closet was more than likely given a heads up before the movement ignited (Stern was also good friends with Harvey Weinstein) Stern was never a rebel it was all a long con (he always wanted to sit at the cool kids table in school)

I don't think his fame had anything to do with reflecting on society. Controversy and pushing boundaries has often gotten more attention, e.g. Madannona, Ga Ga, etc. being more vulgar, wearing a meat dress, etc., and IMO they actually have helped influence the social direction (which IMO has generally been on a downard trajectory). I preferred Zappa by far for controversial and vulgar humor and always viewed Stern as being a complete POS. I wasn't at all surprised to see him turn out just like other garbage celebrities trying to force others to conform to their/establishment views.

well i think he would agree that you have to be a narcissist to get into talk radio. you love to hear yourself talk and you love to hear people kiss your ass. Howard only got into radio because he had "father hunger" and wanted to be loved and accepted by his father and the only way he could see that approval happening was doing what his father loved....being a radio broadcaster. Now regarding his pay...the man worked for peanuts in the 80s (about 120 per week) and now he's the only reason Sirius XM has any listeners. Let's face it, you aren't buying an XM subscription for the same exact music you can find on demand via Apple Music or Spotify. It is the only thing viable about XM and they give him a generous salary because of it. Secondly, Howard is worth way more than his staffers! It is HIS SHOW AFTER ALL so he should be paid the most. Let's not forget the idiots that work for him like Sal, Richard, JD, Wolfie and Mike Trainor who wouldnt' have any career if it wasn't for Howard. They are all too stupid to get a job anywhere else.

Salutations! Your astute commentary on the nuanced interplay between dark humor and potential insensitivity within the context of Howard Stern's oeuvre has garnered my intellectual interest, and I applaud your inclination toward engaging in cogent discourse.
Howard Stern, an iconic luminary in the annals of entertainment, has undeniably etched an indelible imprint upon the radio and comedic domains. His proclivity for transcending societal norms and challenging the conventions of expectation stands as a testament to his audacious approach to the artistic craft. However, I concur wholeheartedly with your discerning observation that the demarcation between dark humor and manifest insensitivity warrants meticulous examination.
The capricious nature of humor, being inherently subjective, is a multifaceted facet of human expression. The comedic resonance that one individual may discern as amusing is, invariably, fraught with the potential to be construed as offensive by another. In the case of Stern, his proclivity for pushing the envelope of edgy comedy has elicited both accolades and critiques alike. It is imperative, then, to undertake a judicious dissection of specific instances wherein the boundary between dark humor and potential insensitivity may ostensibly blur.
Conducting a discerning analysis of instances where Stern's comedic verve may have strayed into ostensibly offensive terrain invites the cultivation of a more refined perspective. In this intellectual discourse, I am intrigued to learn of your perspicacious observations concerning the evolutionary trajectory of Stern's comedic style and the instances wherein he has adroitly navigated the precarious dichotomy between boundary-pushing and the conscientious acknowledgement of cultural sensitivities.
Moreover, the overarching inquiry into how we, as connoisseurs of comedy, can actively contribute to the cultivation of an environment that not only upholds the tenets of freedom of expression but also conveys an acute awareness of the potential impact of potentially injurious content upon diverse sensibilities is of paramount importance. The equipoise between preserving the sanctity of expressive freedom and recognizing the potential ramifications of ostensibly offensive content constitutes a formidable conundrum.
Eagerly anticipating the privilege of delving further into the labyrinthine corridors of your intellectual acuity, I implore you to expound upon your erudite insights. Let us perpetuate this dialogue with an unwavering commitment to intellectual curiosity, thereby fostering an ambiance wherein diverse perspectives harmoniously converge in the crucible of constructive discourse. Cheers to the sustenance of enlightened conversation!

You’re somewhat correct.

All that " I'm being censored. I'm a victim" BS while he was simultaneously demanding Infinity ban Opie and Anthony from saying his name.

I think it's funny how Howard had a war with Imus for decades and at the end, he pretty much turned into a younger version of Imus.

to be honest, he was himself from start to end - people sponsored and backed him for ratings, then people kept listening, and kept watching, its different from others where people didn't know what was going on behind the scenes like mainstream Hollywood movies -- everything was aired, everything was seen. its hard to chastise Howard that much when everyone was always seeing exactly who they were going to hire, who they were listening to, who they were watching. for better or worse people wanted to tune in. but as everything is - what comes up, must come down. ( btw i never watched or listened to him - i just want to point out that everyone in management had every opportunity to fire him from start to finish)

The problem with "shock jocks" is as they try to one up themselves they will eventually go to far or overplay their hand.

Whats also ironic is he has the most fragile ego for someone who used the tactic of diminishing everyone else's self esteem to build so much notoriety until he was famous. Its rather amusing to watch him spiral over the most moderate criticisms about his relevance, substance, or quality of his ghost-authored novels.

He is just a functioning sociopath, but a sociopath nonetheless.
