Because Conan knows how hard it was being a writer. Heck, he was one of the original writers for Simpsons and recalled a memory where they would be stuck in this small room just brainstorming jokes for the whole day, like 9am-5pm and if you've rewatched the original Seasons 1-6, you'd see the layers upon layers of jokes.

I actually went to a Conan show and he was fantastic. He did a five minute stand up just for the audience that wasn’t recorded or aired. It was just for the people there. He probably does that for everyone, but Conan really knew how to make us feel special. The only late night show I watched.

Same here. At the peak of James Corden's show, I was on a trip to the US, and I applied for bunch of the shows, luckily I got accepted for the Corden's show and Conan's.
Conan was unbelievably nice to the audience, he did give us a mini show before the actual show started, and ended up with a Q&A after the taping of the show ended. Live, he was as funny as he is on TV.
Corden on the other hand was the complete opposite, unfunny, arrogant, and his stage manager kept asking us to fake our laughs. Watching the episode a while after attending the shows, proved to me how much post production made Corden look somewhat funny.
I guess I'm one of the few who loved and still love both Jay and Conan

I have always liked Conan and his varied work and one of the only two I ever liked at all. And, of course, both of my favorites were betrayed by their own networks.
My other favorite is Craig Ferguson, who was possibly my fav host, even though, unlike with Conan, I never was a fan of or watched his other work and didn't even know who he was.
That was actually surprising to discover bc I wasn't a fan of the drew carrey show or anything related to puppets/physical comedy lol. So, I never intentionally watched the initial years of Craig Ferguson's late show.
Then, I moved and procrastinated getting cable, I'd put on local network tv sometimes. I caught a random show and was shocked by his humor and genuine kindness and vulnerability. Then, the robot co-host, Geoff, was conceived and it became one of my favorite shows.
It's interesting bc Conan and Craig were both very different than the "late night show host" persona and seemed like quirky, thoughtful, genuine human beings who just happen to be on tv.

He definitely did. I'm sure you know he plays guitar, but he's a huge music fan. The guitarist for the show, Jimmy Vivino, also knew his stuff, so I'm sure he had a role in things as well. If you watch his guitar selection for the pieces they played, he always chose period-accurate guitars each time. I remember them doing a rockabilly song, and he had a Gretsch Duo Jet that sounded exactly like Cliff Gallup's on the early Gene Vincent records. It was uncanny. Later I discovered that Cliff used flatwound strings, which is unusual for rock players, but somehow Jimmy learned that fact and did the same to get that sound. Those guys really cared at least as much about the music as much as any other element of the show.

I’m glad you showed Howard Stern advising Conan about NBC! Did you know he gave the same advice to Fallon? While Jimmy hosted The Late Night Show, Stern warned him not to takeover the Tonight Show. But he didn’t listen, Fallon went for the corporate money. His first soirée as an after hours host, rocked; innovative, funny, good times! Once NBC handed him the coveted spot at 11:35 PM, the show has morphed into a formulaic and dull nightly routine! Perhaps, this fueled Fallon’s descent into drinking!

6:32 You've mucked the story up quite a bit here, the hiding in the cupboard incident happened when Leno already had the job and NBC was thinking of booting him for Dave. It didn't help him get the job in the first place, it helped him keep the job when his Tonight Show had already been running for 7-8 months. And Ludwin didn't decide it was John Agoglia, Warren Littlefield and Bob Wright. Leno got the job in the first place because of his pushy agent Helen Kushnick who was fired a couple of months into her tenure as executive producer as she was...frankly a lunatic

I’ve never found Leno funny and always saw him as a joke, I remember seeing all of this unfold in real time and that’s when my love for Conan kicked into overdrive.
