- The WDR BIG BAND performs "El Marabino" (composer: Antonio Lauro / arranger: Michael Mossman) with Rita Payés (trombone, vocals) and Elisabeth Roma (guitar). The WDR BIG BAND is conducted by Ansgar Striepens. Solos are played by Rita Payés on trombone and Hans Dekker on drums. Produced at WDR Studios Bocklemünd / Cologne (September 2022).

Soy venezolano, este tipo de música que es tan nuestra, ha sido un gran motivo de orgullo para nuestro gentilicio, pues nos identifica mucho como pueblo. Al ver, observar y escuchar lo que ustedes hacen con nuestra música, nos hace sentir más orgullosos aún, allí lo que se refleja y se percibe es un excelente dominio instrumentista, un gran nivel interpretativo, magistral arreglo, una singular Rita Payés, definitivamente un óptimo nivel, bueno desde hace bastante tiempo, estamos muy acostumbrados a su excelsa calidad musical. Me resta decirles cuán profunda y agradecidamente estamos por ello, reciban de mi Venezuela hermosa y de mi parte, el mayor de los abrazos e infinitas bendiciones. Gracias por siempre...!

Yesterday I listened to a new recording of Rita and Elisabeth at a music festival in the Netherlands. They were accompanied by Juan and Horacio on this occasion, which was very nice. The other version I know only has Rita and Elisabeth playing. Every time I hear this song, I always want to hear them playing with Josep on the archtop guitar, Alba on trumpet, Andrea on tenor sax and Eva on soprano sax. This song screams for full orchestration - and YOU GUYS DELIVERED!!

Love this extended version that lets everyone stretch out a bit. Special props to Hans Dekker for capturing the Latin beat. And then the full orchestra erupts! Good stuff.
A great deal of fun had by all beginning with Elisabeth Roma alone.
Rita gets a 3 beat rythm to swing! Nearly impossible. (Then the band comes in, takes it to 4.)
Alan, your greater understanding gives you an extra level of appreciation than those of us who hear it and say, "Hey, that's cool." I'm not sure that makes your appreciation deeper or better; I think that depends on each person's emotional response. But, I could be wrong. Totally immersed in Edmund Spenser's poetry (somebody has to be), I recognize three or four strata at the same time. But, I guess a sensitive person could still be moved more. I wrestle with theories of value (aesthetics and ethics) on a daily basis. Thanks for the elucidation.

Es un valse venezolano ("ajoropado") del gran guitarrista ANTONIO LAURO. El arreglo es formidable y el tema que se repite está basado en un "silbidito" que generaban los músicos para llamarse entre sí en Maracaibo ("Turiru-rí- Tuntún... Turitu-rí"), por eso su título original era "El silbidito". Como todos los valses venezolanos, la guitarra toca la melodía, a la vez que asoma el rítmico acompañamiento, en lo cual Lauro era un genio, tal como esta versión del arreglista Michael Mossam, con todas las secciones de la orquesta con su porción de inigualable sonido moderno. El juego de saxos es increíble. El toque de batería de Hans Dekker es casi el mismo que Frank Hernández inventó para la Onda Nueva de Aldemaro Romero, aunque Dekker es má fino que el del finado "Pavo" Frank Hernández. Fui amigo de Lauro y socio de Aldemaro Romero desde 1963 hasta 1975. Junto organizamos tres festivales mundiales de Onda Nueva y juntos formamos la Orquesta Filarmónica de Caracas. Este video se lo he pasado por whatsapp y lo han escuchado los mejores músicos y cantantes (los que quedan) de por aquí ¡GRACIAS DESDE VENEZUELA!
