- The WDR BIG BAND performs together with Andrea Motis (vocals / trumpet) "Señor Blues", a composition by Horace Silver in an arrangement by Michael P. Mossman. Solos are played by Andrea Motis on trumpet, Jens Neufang on bass clarinet, Ruud Breuls on trumpet, Billy Test on piano and Andy Hunter on trombone. The WDR BIG BAND performs under the direction of Michael P. Mossman. Recorded at WDR Studio Bocklemünd (March 2021).
The young Spanish singer and trumpeter Andrea Motis is the most successful offspring so far from the talent factory of Joan Chamorro in Barcelona. She has released her music, which is strongly influenced by Latin American rhythms, in small formations on several CDs on well-known labels. At the invitation of the WDR BIG BAND, the American trumpeter, bandleader and arranger Michael P. Mossman has now written a program in large orchestral sound garb. In addition to a CD/LP, selected pieces were produced for video in the WDR television studios.

I pleyed this song in my dad's group when I was about 10 or 11 years old loved every minuet of it. As a young trumpet player I didn't have a clue what profound influence jazz would play in my life playing with dad, my brother ( Ronny on drums) my brother (Leonard on guitar) dad on piano and myself on bass also. This is one of the coolist versions of senior blues I have ever heard. You guys are the best. Leroy Allen

It's a great jam and they all play so well: it's a jazz orchestra! I loved the solos on bass clarinet and tenor trombone. The trumpet solo was played so well: I could close my eyes and imagine Arturo Sandoval playing the chart. It's not necessary to get stratospheric to be expressive--and expressive it was.

This is an extremely sophisticated arrangement of Horace Silver's classic. Each member is extremely top drawer. I didn't know the tune had lyrics. An exceptional production of this quality is a rarity.

It will be a huge clean up job.I wished i was still drumming .Love hearing you all in particular perccussion and piano .My late Mother was a concert pianist. Hi Robert! Maybe there will be a possibility in the future time...we do not know at the moment. We had also a big flooding near by Cologne in the valley of River Ahr....and some other places in summer 2021...it is not cleaned up until now.
Such talent and beauty ~ she is developing more and more into a wonderfully talented artist. I love the big band sound.

What a sublime labour of love
Silverware turned into the gold standard, this Señorita Blues will make you feel anything but blue. 5:15 _It ain't necessarily so_ that the WDRBB always has the Midas touch, but it seems that they're particularly inspired and groovy when accompanying Andrea Motis. They know she's a rare gem.

I'm not a super fan of Andrea and these big, lush arrangements, either with WDR or Simfònica del Vallès. I think she is at her best in front of a small combo, or the SAJB. BUT, that said, I have to say this is a gem of a video. The production values are outstanding all around, for sure. And the solos are very nice (particularly the piano). So all in all, I think this is a keeper. And given the quality of both the production and the playing, I'm looking forward to the release of the rest in the series.

I agree with all of the above, especially the piano solo. I'd add that the bass clarinet solo was very well done. It's an instrument that fits in with jazz beautifully. It's great to see a talented young woman like Andrea keepiing the old music alive. She could do anything well, and with her beauty could easily be making big money in pop if she chose that route. I'm glad she's singing in the style she is. Lovely.

Super arrangement, and I love the bass clarinet solo! Of course the whole band is great, and the audio is fantastic as always. It must have been difficult to play in that configuration, with the musicians so far apart, but the video crew really took advantage of "social distancing" to create a look. Beautiful camera work and editing, too!

Generally speaking, the problem with modern day big bands is they lack Soul and Belief in the music. For me, the WDR b/band Has It !!! Chart played with feeling, energy, and yes... belief. Adding a young, upcoming jazz delight in Ms. Motis adds just a nice layer of frosting to and already beautiful tune. Together? A very enjoyable slice of great music!!
