The WDR BIG BAND is conducted by Ansgar Striepens. Solos are played by Billy Test on piano, Rita Payés on trombone and John Goldsby on bass. Produced at WDR Studios Bocklemünd / Cologne (September 2022).

Wonderful, wonderful talent on display, from Ms. Payes' fine vocal and brass to super soloists on piano and flute; and who knew that line of euphoniums, as well as a gaggle of flugelhorns, could sing like that?!

Thank you so much for posting this. I've been following her for a few years and have used her older videos in my jazz classes. She has shown great improvement over the years.
I'm impressed by the arrangement. The use of conical brass gave the band a unique sound and perfectly complimented the trombone's brighter timbre. I enjoyed the flute ensemble writing as well.
Cartola is a Brazilian popular composer. It's a proud to listen this piece in Portuguese with a beautiful trombon solo.

De fato, seria muito interessante que a turma da WDR, Rita, Elisabeth, capazes de criar uma peça inesquecível como fizeram aqui, soubessem que foi Cartola, conhecessem o sentido da letra dessa canção e soubessem quem foi Creuza Francisca dos Santos. Such a lovely and lilting voice, and Portuguesé, a most beautiful language. Yet, this arrangement, while tenderly conceived, was still a bit heavy considering Ms. Payes’s vocal style. Her trombone, is (as always), tasty, thoughtful, and masterful. I look forward to hearing how she continues to develop as a wonderful singer, trombonist, and performer.
