    Massad Ayoob on the "against guns" issue, CCW but not carrying, and why women should carry
    I had a chance to talk with Mr. Massad Ayoob after his MAG-20 Classroom course, which I took.. and recommend to all CCW citizens.
    He expanded on topics such as why there are so many people out there who are still opposed to concealed carry, why many individuals who have applied and have been issued CCW don't carry. why it is equally important - if not eve more important - for women to carry than for men, and more.
    "Massad Ayoob is an internationally-known firearms and self-defense instructor. He has taught police techniques and civilian self-defense to both law enforcement officers and private citizens since 1974. He is a former director of the Lethal Force Institute (LFI), and now directs the Massad Ayoob Group (MAG).
    Mr. Ayoob has appeared as an expert witness in trials and has served as a part-time police officer in New Hampshire for more than 40 years. Mr. Ayoob has authored several books and more than 1,000 articles on firearms, combat techniques, self-defense, and legal issues."

    A study came out last week that CCW Holders are the most law abiding citizens in America, CCW holders commit even less crimes than law enforcement officers.

      @@misters2837 That would true if the society was entirely calm rational people. Remember 61M people looked at Donald Trump and saw a president so rationality is off the table for them.
      The reality is that an armed society is a society with a high gun death rate. In any conflict, the highest probability of injury or mortality is if both are armed, followed far back by one being armed, with neither being armed producing almost no injury or fatalities.
      The idea that "an armed society is a safer society" is an intentional falsehood brought to you by the same people who suggest you need a bazooka for hunting and self-protection.

    6:10 I'm a progressive liberal who is totally on the side of the the gun debate that believes that proliferation to law abiding citizens is one appropriate counterweight to the thousands of criminals with guns. Ayoob has a great point about being media driven. There are plenty of hollow arguments that conservative Republicans believe only to stand with the party lines. I've broken the mold and I hope many people from the other side will begin to as well.

    Nice interview. I very much admire Mr. Ayoob. As a mom who has a CCH (concealed carry handgun) permit from NC, I can say it is the best decision I ever made for my household and family safety. Once it expires I will also get one for my current residential state, SC. I carry every time I leave the house.

      @IvanNikolov  9 лет назад +3

      Bre B. That's the right attitude both women and men should have - take responsibility of your own safety! Don't rely on LE to save your **s - they are not obligated by constitution to save you + they can never make it in 3 seconds (the average length of an attack on a victim) to where you are. Good on you, Bre!

      @elevatedspirit8 9 лет назад +4

      Ivan Nikolov Thanks, I went out and bought a pistol the day a neighbor told me a suspicious man was checking locks on windows and doors in my apartment bldg. As a woman who lived alone I was very concerned that I would not be able to fight off an attacker nor did I want to try at 5'2" 120lbs. Took the class for my state. After waiting 90 days, I received my permit and I feel well-able to protect myself and my family when out.

    • @IvanNikolov
      @IvanNikolov  9 лет назад +3

      And this is all good... the only problem is that the state-required classes for concealed carry permits are largely inadequate and generally do not prepare the citizen to defend him/herself. And, that's regardless of which state you got the CCW training from. I'd strongly(!!) suggest that you take additional training in defensive handgun tactics for the civilian shooter. There are classes available from reputable trainers throughout the country. I can provide suggestions if you need any.

    • @elevatedspirit8
      @elevatedspirit8 9 лет назад +3

      Ivan Nikolov You are absolutely right. The CCW courses are not advised for people who are not proficient in handguns and the safety regarding them. What I did was took the class after learning about firearms and safety at this place called Personal Defense and Handgun Safety Center in raleigh, NC so I could get the 90 day clock started with my local sheriff. Then, I went back for additional range practice and also had to take a safety test and range test to become a member of this range. The owner's son was on that show "Top Shot", I think he was like 6th place one season and they have a lot of experience between their family members. I go back regularly when I'm in the area but I also go to a range near here. I love to train and stay sharp. My dad and stepdad and my bf have all taught me a lot and I've learned so much from range officers and courses. I plan to take advanced shooting courses when my schedule slows down. I would like to get into competition as well as become an instructor at some point.
      Are there any you know of in the SC mid-state area, like near the capital in Columbia? I can Google if not. Thanks!

    • @IvanNikolov
      @IvanNikolov  9 лет назад +3

      Sounds like you're doing the right things to become more proficient.. That's great - you are not one of those CCW owners (majority) who fool themselves that they got all the training they'll ever need with their CCW course.. and (which is even more dangerous) that if they are ever in a situation they will be able to perform!
      I don't know of any schools in the mid-state SC. If you are thinking of getting more advanced training - and it sounds like you are - one day you will have to venture out of your area and even to other states where some of the big names train. There may be a local training facility that hosts the courses of big-name trainers. We have such a school here where I live. I was fortunate not to have to travel very far to go to Tom Givens and Massad Ayoob for example.

Dodge City had something like 13 killed in gunfights during the 1870's while NYC had duels with hundereds of participants shooting it out, usually one street gang vs. anothe,r with the NYPD triangulating their fire against both sides to stop the battle and restore the peace. The 1863 Draft Riots were the epitimy. The OK Corral had less than 10 participants and lasted less than 2 minutes.

    Interesting question about folks who have permits who don't carry, or rarely carry. Both my wife and I have carry permits (Tennessee only has carry permits. Up to you if you carry open or concealed) but my wife rarely carries her CZ 75 9mm pistol. She says it's because it's hard to carry concealed (she refuses to open carry) with the clothing that women wear. Of course, I *always* carry my Ruger GP100 1759 TALO in a shoulder rig where I can cover it with a light button shirt in summer or a coat in winter. But I digress...
    Out of frustration I asked my lovely wife one day why she got the damned permit when she never carries, and she says "Because it gives me the *RIGHT* to carry. It also gives me the *choice* not to." While I'd like to see her carry more, that was the answer that encapsulates (or should) our American ideal of liberty. That's where I think a lot of gun-grabbers go off the rails. The fact that I want the right to have guns, doesn't mean I want to force anyone else to have them against their will.

    • @TheGunrunn3r
      @TheGunrunn3r 7 лет назад +1

      doug casady Even though they are cheap, I hate to waste money. My wife won't carry either. For her, a gun has to be made of steel. She says the weight of a gun must be comforting. Besides, her favorite is her pre-B CZ 75 which is invisible in a shoulder rig. Hell, I carry a Ruger 1759 in a shoulder rig under a loose long-sleeve shirt, open like a lab coat, and that young artillery piece is hidden.
      Any handgun can be properly concealed with the right clothing, so I don't see a reason personally to carry a mouse-gun against people. Just my opinion, but 9mm Para is the low end for a defense cartridge and 357 Mag the high end (if the gun has a medium-heavy to heavy frame). Guns chambered in "smaller" calibers don't deliver the damage that might otherwise stop an attacker with a not-quite-so-well-placed shot. Calibers "larger" than 357 Mag do not deliver follow-up shots as quickly you might need.
      I often read how confident folks are with their skills as gunslingers. While I have never had to use a gun in a civilian setting, I have been in a few lead-trading events as a soldier. Never be too confident. Things go sideways. In my first contact I burned through over 70 rounds from my FAL rifle. I don't recall even reloading. Not once. Not twice, but *three* times I changed mags. We were a squad that ran into another squad-sized bunch. With all that lead flying, total casualty list, 5 wounded (one ours, one died later, theirs) and one dead (theirs). I'm a pretty good marksman, but honestly I was shooting at cover that "had potential."
      The point I'm making, is that when shooting starts, the only thing you can predict is unpredictability. Every edge you can give yourself is wise. Choice of gun, holster, attitude, awareness could mean the difference of seeing another sunrise. That's why I'm not particularly a fan of little pocket-pistols.

      @TheGunrunn3r 7 лет назад +2

      doug casady Nah. It's fun at the range, but it's more expensive than 9mm, and less effective. With the 380, you are looking down the barrel of 170-ish foot-pounds energy at the muzzle. 9mm is around 250-ish, while 357 mag will deliver anywhere from 500 to 800 ft-lbf, depending on ammo.
      While there are different ways of phrasing events, you employ lethal force to stop an attacker. It sounds better in court than saying kill the attacker, but we both know that the surest stop is a kill. That's what'll happen if a .357 inch diameter 158gr Hornady XTP projectile collides center mass at over 800 ft-lbf. That's the kind of rounds I carry in the event of a zombie attack, and if you think zombies aren't real, google "bath-salts."
      My opinion is that a gun is like a fire extinguisher. You have to know how to use it, it's better to have one, and nobody ever wants to have to use one.

      Wow y'all carry some big-ass guns in the GP100 and the CZ75. Just a point of info in case you aren't aware: the all steel CZ 75 weighs over 36 oz unloaded, compared with 25 oz for a Glock 17 or Glock 22, guns cops most commonly carry on their belts. In other words, that gun your wife is (not) carrying is a very big, heavy gun. Perhaps she'd be more likely to carry if she had a Glock 19 or a Ruger P85 or something.

Most of the instructors I've been fortunate to train/study under have pretty much done away with political correctness (they tell it like it is), but Mass and Tom Givens have really mastered the art of brutal honesty - they know their stuff, they understand phenomenally well how the system works and they are not afraid to "tell it like it is". I respect both men a lot. Most people will never get to that level of honesty in their lifetimes. I hope I do.

      Example; When I was in Law Enforcement, our twice annual qualification scores were called; "Regulation scores" even said so on the bottom of our targets. The Range Master at that time (Just a couple years ago) would openly state to those who received low scores "That you need more regulation time" Regulation simply means to train/be prepared.
      So, with these facts presented, the words "Well regulated" meant/means to train regularly to be ready. In-fact this was going to be a mandate, but somehow did not come to fruition whereas the government would aid in the cost of regulating the people on a certain bases.
      Well, hope you learned something today.

    The Second Amendment permits no federal, state, or local law to deny any citizen of the USA their right to carry arms. There is no specification(s) on HOW one's arms must be born. There is no need for "laws" to permit concealed carry or any other kind; we need ONLY start tossing out justices who claim that our founders were brilliant enough to create the most successful nation in human history, but were CLEARLY too stupid to know what "people" and "arms" mean. Insisting upon such an insane claim is clearly not "during good behavior."

    Another reason at least in my state why a person would get a CCW yet not carry is simply because that CCW makes it so you never have to bother with permits anymore. In my state if you have CCW permit that IS your permit. I can go in any gun store anytime i want and buy any gun i want and as many as i want without going to apply for a permit and wait 6 weeks. Thats a huge factor in getting these permits yet not carrying. I still carry with mine but you can easily see in this case why someone would get a permit and not choose to carry afterwards.

    I think another reason crime has went down since the 90s (up until the Ferguson effect, recently I'm sure crime is up), is because of Row vs Wade. Since abortion became legal, the poor single mothers that breed criminals have the option. The timing works out, mid 70s they started, when those kids would have been teenagers in the early 90s, the crime started dropping.

    How about having the captions exhibit exactly what the person is saying. There are numerous captions that don't match what is spoken and in fact the captions are grossly inaccurate even showing the exact opposite of what is being stated. Who ever is supposed to be involved in having the captions shown should realize that the captions are to often so very much incorrectly exhibited. If the captions are a result of software that deals with the spoken word it seems to me that someone should be correcting the obvious captions on the video.

Because during my life I've run into situations that required a response, but not necessarily a deadly response. Would I use deadly force? Without a blink of the eye. But run the numbers. Do the math. What are the odds I'll find myself in that situation? Oh, wait ... Powerball. Okay, yeah, it could happen. I arm myself as I feel appropriate and if doo doo happens, well, it happens.

      I've come to change my mind as I've gotten older. My anti-gun wife came to me and asked me to investigate various sprays that she could carry. Which led me to question my own carry habits. I carried a RM380 in a wallet on and off. I now carry a Seecamp .32 in a holster in my back pocket. I've come to the understanding that you cannot be prepared if you don't prepare. Only by carrying daily can you be comfortable with your gun and be prepared for a "situation."

      +Andrew Wolfe You are doing the best you can considering the environments that you have to be in daily! That's great. As far as I know from the License To Carry Instructor class that I attended you can carry concealed in a hospital as well but only with the written permission of the upper management. I have to check whether this is valid for Texas only or it's a federal law. It escapes me now.

    • @andrewwolfe8742

      +Ivan Nikolov The law in Illinois states we can't carry in a hospital or other medical facility. That is just part of our CCW law. I live with it, but I wish there was a way I could lock it up during my shift so that when I go back to my car at night I could be carrying. There are times I have been thankful, such as when I am getting off late and leaving a hospital in a "sketchy" area, to make it back to my car where I have to keep my firearm locked up until I get out of the hospital. Keep up the good fight my friend!

    Why do people who have CC not carry? Well, in many states having a CC permit exempts you from waiting periods on gun purchases, etc. Some states, Kentucky for example, have always allowed OPEN carry without a permit but if the gun becomes inadvertently concealed, your shirt comes un tucked and covers the gun, you are violating the law. Having a CC license avoids any risk of that. Myself, I always carry, but I have heard people mention those reasons.

      No one's telling you you have to get a permit but here's the thing if you get caught without one carrying concealed that's your ass. Regardless of what the second Amendment says... You will get penalized. I'm thankful to have been born and raised here in New Hampshire and up until 2017 it was very very easy and cheap to get the permit to conceal carry and as of 2017 we have been a constitutional carry state.
      And I'll be honest... I've been carrying since I was 19 years old even without a permit. I'm just lucky I never got caught.

    Thank-you, Mas, for recognizing the 'slippery slope' of *requiring* 'Mandatory Training' for a Carry Permit! As someone of *severely* limited finances, *that* is a serious consideration; as a resident of New York State, the cost of *getting* a Permit (even *without* having a Mandatory Training requirement!) is bad enough, then add in the cost of a decent-quality gun (even if used) ... whew! I'm having a hard enough time saving for it all, as is!
    The articles Mas has published over the years, combined with occasional bursts of hands-on training when I have had money, have made me good enough with guns that I have successfully helped my brother train his kids, and trained a couple of others, too (who had previously received 'training' that was ... not very helpful). I am more than adequate with a gun, and happy to demonstrate so to anybody - but if NYS suddenly puts in a 'Training Requirement' for a Carry Permit ... I will be 'priced out of the market'; which would be the point, of course!

    I particularly liked two of the points he made in this interview.
    Firstly the one about not only protecting your children, but also protecting their dad (ie yourself).
    By protecting yourself, you are also protecting your children from the trauma of losing a parent.
    Secondly, the point about mothers being armed is spot on.
    In my family's particular circumstances, if only one of us could be armed, I would choose for it to be my wife.
    I'm just not around our kids as much as she is because I'm at work a lot.

  • @z1522
    @z1522 7 лет назад

    Mr. Ayoob applies a considerable number of brain cells to all manners of firearms issues, and having deeper conversations about these areas is imperative, especially in our polarizing political climate where too often we follow a "party line" without giving our own individual thoughts to bear on the greater societal impacts of our actions and policies.
    As another 'progressive liberal independent,' I happen to know more people who've been hit by lightning, than have been murdered by attackers. But the latter number is still three, to my awareness. I also look at the sheer numbers of firearms estimated, compared to actual usage in fatal shootings, either crimes, accidents, or defensive use, and note how small the numbers are, suggesting the fear of guns is grossly exaggerated. Defensive shooting statistics are terribly suspect, but that should be irrelevant to an individual's decision to have a gun for protection. Rights and responsibilities walk hand in hand.
    If you own a gun for defense, the equation balances favorably only if you and your loved ones are safer with that choice. If you are not comfortable carrying it 24/7, by all means don't. If home situations have small kids, unattended teens, a mentally challenged or depressive person, your choices must responsibly adjust for those risk factors, and for many investing in locks and lighting is actually more effective than being armed.
