Beatrice Arthur's phrasing is fabulous, she could recite the telephone directory and you'd be fascinated . Saw her at The Savoy Theatre in London, sang this, and many other songs - and it was a wonderful evening, such a kind and dignified woman, and hilarious, a STAR in every sense of the word. I'm astounded no star on the walk of fame, better start a petition for that. Thank you for posting this recording.
I saw Bea do this in her one-woman show here in Toronto in 2002. What a fucking legend!!!! She can get inside a ballad like no-one's business and this one (along with "Fun to be Fooled") leave me awash in tears every time. And then after you see her in all these assertive roles on TV she does this and you realize that Bea was a BIG romantic... just like so many of us. I miss her so much.
So many singers in the world and here i am 24 listening to this giant.....after 3 years of my mom being gone and dad being gone for a year now ... ....living from post to post....this performance reaches volumes to me.❤
What a heartbreaking performance - THIS is a true actress. You hear and see worlds collide in her voice and expressions. The subtle crack of pain in her voice at the end is truthful and beautiful. I miss her so. Thanks for sharing. 🎶👏🏼🌟🌟🌟🌟🌟❤️😭
This is a fabulous song, with truly deeply felt lyrics. Bea Arthur conveys the meaning of every line with such feeling that just a singer rarely reaches. This is why Sondheim has always said that he prefers actors who can sing, over singers who can act.
Exactly... Where Do you start ?.. My first time hearing this song and I'm glad it was Bea bringing it.. This song speaks volumes to endings and beginnings in our lives ...So moving and performed by one of America's Greats ! Gonna watch and listen again... Where's that damn Kleenex !?
I Love Broadway Theater Musical And Acting It's Such A Big Passion Of Mine. In Bea Author Had A Beautiful Voice It Just Tells A Story May She Continue To Rest In Complete Harmony In GOD Loving Arms 🕊️🕊️🕊️
I was so fortunate so hear Bea Arthur sing this in person in Tampa, FL. I am happily partnered, but this song takes me back to the days when I really wanted and needed someone in my life. Bea's timing and delivery of this lovely sing still moves me to tears for so many reasons. Thank you so very much for posting it. :)
I love her rendition of this song. Every performance of this song she’s done she’s sung with so much emotion. It makes me wonder if it resonated with her given how her second marriage ended.
I have very few regret’s in life and one of them is my failure to catch a live performance of Ms Bea Arthur. Luckily, I got to see Francis Albert Sinatra with Sammy Davis and Liza Minelli at The Greek Theater.
jesus christ............i had no idea she was a singer and a broadway star. i just knew from..........you know........TV. AND.....she was a Marine for christ sake. wow, what a life !!!
What a talent! Who cares that she did have the greatest singing voice, when one can give a heartbreaking performance like this? Same applies to Ms. Lansbury and Ms. Stritch. Thank you so much for sharing with us!
Her eyes sometimes looked so sad.. does anyone else see this in Bea?? Even on the Golden Girls her eyes could look so sad, unlike during “Maude“ where she looked happy. She was happy playing Maude! I absolutely love Dorothy and Bea was such a talented unique person.
Whoah, extraordinary emotional nuances in her vocals......amazing! BTW who is the accompanist he did a superb job... followed her every move! Bea seemed very pleased by him
Billy Goldenberg was her longtime friend and pianist but this gentleman looks quite a bit younger than Mr. Goldenberg. Not sure ... but he’s phenomenal!
@@cshockley10: I was thinking that the pianist looks like the same guy who played the pianist on that episode of the Golden Girls when she sang "What'll I Do?".
@@cshockley10: Ohh, OK. Yeah, we'll never know if it was "dubbed" or not. Just like the scene where Rose plays the "Miami" theme song - I've always wondered if she was really playing. It's not as easy to tell if someone is really playing, a piano, as it is with a guitar.
I love this song. And of course the lady singing it! [Wish the guys in the background had the respect in the presence of such a legend to shut up but I digress.] Every time i've seen her sing it's always been in a stage/Broadway fashion [meaning she doesn't just go through and sing the song, she takes the time to show emotion and knows just what to do] and I absolutely love it. Gratefulance with lyrics by the in imitable Marilyn and Alan Bergman who coincidentally wrote the lyrics to Bea Arthur’s TV show Maude. Talk About coming full circle ❤️
Bea Arthur never gave herself enough credit--she always said of her singing "I'm not very good". Of course, she wasn't the best judge of her own talent. She was a wonderful singer in the great stage/cabaret tradition. So much character in her voice! I love to hear her singing this.
im leaving this comment here, so if someone likes this, ill be reminded of this masterpiece ❤️❤️
Bea was always underrated as a vocalist. Unique, gifted, real.
I loved it when she sang on The Golden Girls 💛
Wow the best rendition of this song

This brought me to tears. She’s so mesmerizing to watch. Rest In Peace to a beautiful icon and incredible talent ❤️
Such a beautiful raw and deeply emotional voice and performance. She could get into a song like Angela Lansbury could. Both excellent intrepetators
She is the gift that keeps giving. Always grateful for you dearest.
Great performer, BEA ARTHUR, A LEGEND, REST IN PEACE, MY IDOL.
She really made you feel what she was singing. This brought tears to my eyes bc she was so expressive, RIP to an icon
Bea was one of a kind. That's greatness. Wonderfull warm voice.
She had so much talent. Of course, the Golden Girls was my favorite show, but she had a such wonderful voice. May she rest in peace

Truly a professional performer of the likes we will never see again
She had a unique and beautiful voice. Bea had so many talents. Loved her! RIP!
many have sung what'll I do but Dorothy made me fall in love with Irving Berlin. Bea you never got the recognition that you so deserved LOVE U

I just stumbled on this song - great! I've looked up other versions but I think I still like Bea's best.

My guess is that she was promoting her show pre-Broadway, which would make this late 2001 or 2002. I saw it twice and LOVED it!!

Wow. Just wow. It brought out some suppressed emotions. Loved it. Thank you. ♥️👍
Although completely unimportant in here career I consider this one of her best performances.

I don't necessarily like her fast phrasing, but the emotion is completely authentic in this great song.

Excellent.
Please everybody, listen to Nancy LaMott's rendition of this song. it's definitive.
This was over here in The Netherlands.Dutch tv comedy show.
It was in her one-woman show "Bea Arthur just between friends"

@johnmattinson99 If I'm not mistaken, this was recorded around 2002.... But I'm not sure ;-)

I suspect she's been through this-thats why it's so believable!
I agree. After all she was married to Broadway director Gene Saks for nearly 30 years until he, apparently, left her for a younger woman. So sad.
