I love this scene so much, not just because Bea Arthur is amazing but just because of how sweet this scene is when you think about it. This man just invited this woman who he's never met before to sing just so she'll feel more comfortable and confident in her surroundings. It's just wonderful.
I wonder if everyone in that room realized how lucky they were to see Ms Arthur perform that in person amazing voice and performer. She'll always be my favourite Golden Girl 😃😊😊😍
Dorothy was always my favorite. sarcastic, insecure, but knew when it was her moment to shine. and I love how she wore a sailor dress to the Rusty Anchor.
She definitely is the GG closest in personality to me: shy, poor self-image, not usually the most popular person in the room...but who can shoot one-liners like Rambo taking out a helicopter.
There is one, kinda. It is a recording of her tour "Bea Arthur on broadway- just between friends". Not a regular studio album, but she does sing and even though she was much older then as she has been on The Golden Girls, she never lost "it". It's a beautiful album.
SlyBoogie2u Me too....first ever I heard this song.It was THIS.I found The CHET BAKER'S version and ive been hooked since 2000.But like I said DZ version here is what still moves me😢
I love the ensuing scene where Blanche admits that she finds herself jealous of Dorothy for the first time... A humble Blanche tells Dorothy why all the the men were swooning for her- because when she is up there singing, she's beautiful, she simply glows.
This is my favorite version of the song. Irving Berlin wrote it when his mother died because he missed her so much. I lost my mom last week and had to find this.
This sums up the golden girls appeal in one short clip. Poignancy and warmth perfectly balanced with razor sharp comedy. Honestly this clip kills me every time. Bea’s vulnerability in this moment then the confidence kicking in ❤️
Side note: Anybody else find Bea Arthur quite attractive in season 7? She hit her physical peak on that show in the final season, even usurping Blanche in my opinion.
v_espertine I think Bea was a strikingly attractive woman. Perhaps not traditionally beautiful, but certainly physically appealing in many ways. I agree - she looked her best in Season 7 and the other later seasons.
I want to cry for my beloved Bea, when I see her in season seven. She gained weight and was starting to lose her Maude voice that she used in the earlier seasons. I think she left the show also for health reasons too. But her hair and face was also very beautiful this season. In the last episode Dorthy is given lots of love dignity. Her son Mathew admits in magazine interviews, that Bea's voice was aging and she felt it time to bring the show to a close.
it's precious but i noticed one day as i was watching this on Hulu that her singing put my son to sleep. So now when it's time for his nap everyday, i play this.
Separating from my wife of 7 years this summer. Nothing bad we just grew apart...this is one of her favorite shows. This song shreds the heart if you know how it feels
@@beccahaines3617 we're divorced but I don't hold it against her. It's getting easier for me these days...New relationship is slowly growing. I moved to a completely different place. I just focus on my job and the gym
1:37 Always trips me up. There's an honest emotion in Rue's face that makes me believe she was touched by Bea's performance but tried to channel it into "Blanche" being "jealous" since that's what the scene called for. But true "jealousy" shows up in anger and resentment because jealousy is a defense mechanism to hide vulnerability... not reveal it.
This is one of my favorite Dorothy episodes, because we get to see the vulnerable, gentle side that so rarely comes out. Don’t get me wrong, I love Dorothy’s snark and sarcasm, but moments like this prove that her barbs are actually covering up deep sadness and insecurity. She’s likely singing about Stan-who, deep down, she always loved and still cares about-and all of the other “ones who got away” over the years. Bea Arthur does the best rendition of this tune I’ve ever heard. Thank you, Ms. Arthur. I’m sure you are singing in Heaven...
Her voice is so beautiful. If she ever came out with a Christmas album, I would’ve listened to that endlessly!!!!❤️ such a beautiful woman. A treasure.
I'm writing this from Munich, Germany, in September 2020, LOL, and I also had never heard this song before until hearing it tonight on the Disney Channel on that special episode of "The Golden Girls"... Bea Arthur sang it so beautifully, it brought tears to my eyes!
❤️❤️❤️ It's 5am in Denver, and I'm looking up this beautiful piece of history to show my friends, I end up with tears in my eyes singing this song. "when I'm alone with only dreams of you, That won't come true, What will I do?"
Cheers to the young musician who listened to his intuition about Dorothy and encouraged her within a couple of minutes of first meeting each other, pretty much told her, Bea yourself and go for it...he saw through her shyness about it, has a passion for music reflecting... So yeah, cheers to that dude. ♥
This. This right here. This is without question my favorite moment in the show. Bea Arthur's performance is so unbelievably beautiful and impactful. I sing this to myself damn near every night.
Aweeeeee... Bea Arthur has always been one of my favorite. I love this version of this song, I remember this song from The Great Gatsby.. RIP Bea Arthur..
This episode introduced me to the Great American Songbook and Jazz standards. I still hold What'll I Do and Hard Hearted Hannah very near and dear to my heart. ♥
This has always been one of my favorite scenes… It so deeply heartfelt through Bea’s voice .. soulfully beautiful. I wonder how much of connection it was for her. I wish she would’ve recorded the entire song. I love The Golden Girls so much. It first aired when I was 12 yrs old, I’m now 47 will be 48 this year. I watched her life unfold for yrs not knowing it would be my life soon. I’ll be an empty nester soon and I’m looking for my Golden Girls pals. Their living arrangements is perfect for me. 😊❤
My favorite part about this style is that it’s not necessarily showy or ostentatious. It’s really visceral and not superficial which juxtaposes Blanche’s methods of attention perfectly
Watched this episode last night.....This song moved me so much i had to search it out on RUclips....Loved the Golden Girls as a teenager , still love it in my 50's and will love it till the day I join these lovely ladies in the afterworld....hopefully i can sit and share a cheesecake with them all....though I may beat Rose to it...she's still alive and kicking in her 100th year on the planet :)
I love the scene she has with Blanche afterwards were Blanche tells her of how secretly jealous she is, and how beautiful Dorothy looked singing. It hurt Blanche to admit it but she couldnt help telling the truth.Dorothy got to be the beautiful one for once.
She sings it as if she's had those thoughts and feelings before. One of my all time favorite Golden Girls moments.

Magical
*Everyone thinks the song is over *Dorothy notices the attention...
"WHAT'LL I DO!" Hahahaha, classic 😂
R.I.P. Bea Arthur
Sebizzar didn't notice that before..
Love that part, Dorothy kicked it up a notch!
Makes me laugh every time
Haha love that part

Vulnerability, pathos, warmth, hilarious comedic timing in a couple of minutes...this woman was phenomenal
yes indeed ...
i love the Golden Girls been watching them since i was 5 years old back in 1988 and 1989

Aww I love your appreciation of her. ❤ She was great and really shines in this scene.
Cried for no reason. Perhaps it's the deliverance she made with words and her soulful voice
..or maybe you felt what we all do whenever we're wondering what will we do...
@@WedrownyGrajek Exactly.....that's the power of a great performer--she's able to touch your soul and share the raw feelings with you.

Uncle Adam Beautifully said.
Nobody mentions the pianist but he's the man, instantly looks behind Dorothy. Great observer!
A beautifully melancholy tone ... I’ve never heard this song sung so perfectly.
Aww I know it's heartwrenching❤
Always makes me cry. I think this one really came from her heart. I miss Dorothy.
Dan Knott I couldn’t agree more. Well said.

I agree, she felt that
Same. Since I first heard this song when I was 10 in 1960.
Wow Dorothy sang like she owned it.

Beautiful how she sings this song. You can see the real emotion behind it: passion and hurt.
The moment it hits you that Broadway Bea Arthur is coming through and actually singing...wow...
It's sound like she was holding back tears when she song that song made me 😢
Side note: Anybody else find Bea Arthur quite attractive in season 7? She hit her physical peak on that show in the final season, even usurping Blanche in my opinion.
That's when her hairstyle looked the best too, imo.
She does, but I think she looked the best around season 5/6, when her hair was a little longer

Give a listen to MAME. Bea singing a duet with Lucille Ball is something to behold!
I dont think she was acting, she was feeling; she sang, yes! but she was just feeling every single word
Bea looked so beautiful and elegant in the last two seasons.
Such a shame bea arthur didnt record a version of this beacause she sung it very beautifully
Very true
This one got me. Weeping.
I would have killed to see her on broadway! BRAVO BEA 👏🏻

This is a heartbreaking song, but when Bea sung it, it was just so beautiful and soothing.
I just discovered this song for the first time while watching Golden Girls .Now i don't know if i can go a day without hearing it.
Irving Berlin wrote this heart wrenching song in 1924. It always tears me up and today is mo different.
it's precious but i noticed one day as i was watching this on Hulu that her singing put my son to sleep. So now when it's time for his nap everyday, i play this.
Her voice is so warm and calming.
About to cry, Rest in Peace Bea Arthur
this song makes me think of my grandma. she had my grandpa's pic on the table so she could talk to him. He died WAY before her. LOVE BEA ARTHUR!!
Dorothy has a great singing voice.
Irving Berlin is smiling with a few tears.
Strange really, I am an 80's kid. So many love songs out there anz yet I keep cominh back to this one and only because of Bea. Bar none!
Bea Arthur's version is as good as any professional singer I absolutely love it 💚
her version of Hard Hearted Hannah is my go to
Bea Arthur was a “professional” singer as evidenced by her broadway career.
The pianist is playing I Wanna Be Loved By You... that’s a fun little bit of foreshadowing 😃
Yesss I noticed that too! I wonder if it was added on purpose? 🤔
One of my fave Golden Girls moments. I get emotional everytime I watch this...
She should've recorded this!
She always wanted to sing and she got her chance in her later years. She was a natural. True class act.
