Weón/weona is used for saying "stupid", "friend", "dude/girl", etc. There's so many uses for it but it depends on the context and mostly on the attitude you use for saying it

English native speakers if you are learning Spanish don't be discouraged....when they say Chilean Spanish, Mexican Spanish is 90% slang if you use standard Spanish everyone in the Spanish world will understand. For example in this video if you say Novio, Fiesta, bebe, estomago....instead of Pololo, Carrete , guagua, guata ....any Chilean will know these words ...they will identify you as a foreigner but they know these words through formal conversations, literature, TV etc.

It's funny the way Andrea from Mexico asks to Janet from Chile if she's sure that they speak the same language, because there're so many words in mexican slang that are unknown for other Spanish speakers. Frases como: la media cagada = tremendo desastre.
Quedó la media cagada = quedó la tremenda cagada = quedó el gran desastre.
Refiriéndose a una situación que pasó.
También un alternativa es decir:
La mansa cagada = un desastre muy grande

this expression exists in portuguese and here it was kept in the original sense, anyone outside brazil is a gringo (I believe this remains the case in other lusophone countries)

La etimología de pololo que usamos en Chile proviene de unos insectos que tienden a pegarse a la ropa de uno. Como los novios andan siempre juntos, tomados de la mano o abrazados, se le compara y se le llama con el nombre de ese bicho.

I was born in Mexico and I speak the Mexican Spanish but i’ve watched the other videos with the Spain vs Mexico Spanish and most of the words the Spain Andrea uses I use too (as well as the Mexican Andrea) I’m not sure if maybe I was taught to speak both of them but it’s so cool learning other types of Spanish!!
For Spanish as a second language speakers don't worry, the difference is very subtle mostly the big difference is the slang or "modismos" for example Cachai, Carrete, Pololo etc if you use " comprendes, fiesta, novio everyone in the Spanish world will understand easily because that is standard Spanish.....even Chileans would understand this.
Pololo is an insect that sticks to you and just stays there, sort of a big ladybug. Thats why we started to call pololo to boyfriends, in our culture the relationship between young people are usually very sticky to each other.
Spanish Andrea is so beautiful, she has a gorgeous smile, and great personality , and is really good at languages . I guess she is married ?.

Lo de bacán es mejor decir eres bacán en vez eres una bacán o un bacán, y si, bacán es una palabra de género neutro, se puede usar tanto para hombres como mujeres, lo de andar a lo gringo, es no usar ropa interior (no necesariamente desnudo), por ejemplo alguien que anda con pantalones pero sin ropa interior sería andar a lo gringo.
En México Wey también es para decirle a alguien q es tonto, "q wey eres" "no seas wey, así no se hace".

I think most Americans don’t care if you call us gringos. Especially because a lot of people in the US just assume if you’re Hispanic in America you’re from Mexico. There’s a good chance that they are Mexican because of the proximity of our countries but there’s also plenty of other Hispanics in the states.
If you say gringo in Costa Rica, automatically people would think you are reffering to a person from usa.

La parte que se parece a los costarricenses es la región Caribe de Colombia. En nuestros dialectos, la región caribe colombiana habla completamente diferente a las otras regiones de Colombia pero muy parecido a los países caribeños
We Colombians understand the Caribbean’s bc we have our own version of them, the costeños, anyway they speak waaay different than the rest of the country, we also have many accents and dialects, so there’s not like a standard Colombian accent, but we try to understand the mannerisms of each region

En Argentina le decimos gringos a los extranjeros blancos/rubios/castaños/pelirrojos de ojos azules/verdes y que en su mayoria no hablan el español.

The Northern people Andrea is referring to are Germans. According to my German teacher, there are more Germans than locals in Majorca and most signboards are written in German. Sadly, the place gets trashed by the tourists, according to her.

No hay carteles en alemán en la isla, todo está en español y catalán/mallorquín. En las atracciones turísticas hay carteles en múltiples idiomas, lo habitual..
Evidentemente hay algunos enclaves en los que hay muchos turistas, unos alemanes y otros británicos, y otros lugares en los que son residentes, en los que puedes encontrar nombres de bares, algún restaurante o así en esos idiomas... todo lo demás es falso y exagerado jajaja

Y si te vas a la city, Palma, unos 500.000 habitantes, si ves algún alemán que no sea en la catedral, será que se ha perdido jejeje (de hecho, hay más inmigrantes latinoamericanos que alemanes en la capital).
Resumiendo, en algunos pueblos y urbanizaciones costeras hay mucho alemán sí, tantos como para abrir sus propios negocios etc, pero decir que hay carteles en alemán en lo que es la infraestructura de la isla es lo más exagerado que he leído nunca 😂, esa profesora de alemán se ve que solo frecuenta esas zonas, típico "guetismo", por decirlo de alguna forma.
PD: la isla tiene más o menos 1.200.000 residentes, de los cuales unos 60.000 son alemanes, 25.000 italianos, 22.000 argentinos, 20.000 marroquíes, 15.000 británicos, 15.000 franceses, 15.000 ecuatorianos, 15.000 colombianos, 10.000 chinos etc
Un tercio de la población es de origen extranjero, multicultural la isla 😀

Bacán is close to the word bacana that means cool in Portuguese.
Brazilians also use "bacana" as "cool", us portuguese only use the masculine form (bacano) and it means "dude/guy" but referring to someone we don't know personally.
"Bacana" can also be used for rich people.

What is interesting is that "andar a lo gringo" would directly translate to another figure of speech in english, which is "going commando". I wonder how those two originated and if they're related in some way, given that "gringo" has something to do with the green uniforms of their military, if I'm not mistaken.

I don't think most part of us Chileans say "a lo gringo", only a few ones. Most part of us say "en pelota" or "en pelotas".
Es que no es lo mismo andar a lo gringo que andar en pelota po! 🤣 Así que no es el reemplazo de la otra. Creo que faltó más explicación y andar a lo gringo hace referencia a cuando se está vestido, ya sea con pantalones, vestido, short, falda o lo que sea, pero sin calzones, lo que obviamente no se nota porque tapa la ropa

@@AhsokaTano36BBY Because before spanish was their main language, and some peoples miss this, even in the Philippines dialect there are spanish words, i have a friend from Philippines, and used to tell me that he would love to speak spanish, as was before in his country

¿Cómo del sur? ¿Del sur de donde? Andrea es española y lo de decir las palabras que acaban en "-ado" terminándolas en "-ao" es algo muy típico de aquí de España, y no precisamente del sur sino más bien de la zona centro (Madrid y por allí) pero que hoy en día está extendido por toda España.
Y la otra Andrea es mexicana, no se si del norte o del sur.

In portuguese (at least in Brazil's northeast), we also say "bacana" as somewhat of a cognate, but more in a derogatory way. We often say people are bacanas when they think too much of themselves (in which it also means cool person, but in a sarcastic way).
Ya, si igual entendemos en Chile mucho de lo que otros países habla hispana dicen, pero no lo usamos como algo propio. Entendemos coche, carro, rumba, maíz, entre otros, al menos en su mayoría. Mucho de ello es por doblajes de películas o series y te acostumbras a un estándar... Y luego está el nivel hardcore de aprenderse todas las formas en las que se le dice al popcorn jajaja

Some Americans I've met think that gringo is a racial thing, meaning white. It's not, at least in México, it just means "person from the United States". We don't call them "Americanos" because in Spanish Americano is anyone from the Americas, not only the U.S., and the official toponym "estadounidense" is too long, so we use gringo, at least informally.
