I’m on my third set of locs and I went back to a square brick pattern. I’m really liking this after having diamond parts before. My nape didn’t do well at all with diamond parting because the nape is softer and hard to loc. I also had really big locs and really skinny ones on the sides because of the way the diamonds fell. I liked the way they looked on my head but overall I’m enjoying this brick better. The nape is better, the size loc is uniform and it covers my head better.
I've always wanted to continue to maintain my own locs (haven't had anyone else's hands in my hair in over 10 years), so I opted for brick parting because I felt it was the easiest to maintain due to the straight lines.
I keep saying the only time you will see it is when you first get that retwist. The longer your locs get the further those retwist get you end up never even seeing those parts. Concerning that coverage issue I use c shape bricklay.
5 months going on 6 on my loc journey I have studied before locing lol and I picked brick and I’m really glade I did bc I have fuller hair and any other parting would have gave me too much fullness for my liking! Great video new subie here your locs are beautiful as well! ❤️
I started my Locs last month and started my second set with a C shape for fullness. I want thick Locs and I’m seeing them being thick and full with the c shape
I have course fine hair as well and I started my locs almost 4 months ago with square pattern, which I love! But thennnn I learned about all these different patterns after, and I loved the way diamond pattern looked. Now after watching your video, I'm glad I made the right choice for me with square pattern, because I do want my locs to be the same size, and that's more important to me than having diamond parting. Plus I love seeing the grid pattern and dont mind scalp showing. It's like art to me😍
I asked the loctician about density and type of starter and sizing and she left it all up to me with "I can't do anything about your density." I chose smedium square bricks since she only offered bricks. I have thin fine coarse hair and I want pencil thin or a little more mature locs and as much fullness as possible. I'm a week post and I'm seeing the edges (which is where my hair is the thinest) are just random mini squares, uneven and smaller than other areas like she ran out of hair when she got to it or something. I am now going through to make some more even sized. I feel rectangular brick would've been better to give my edge locs more surface area. This video helped.
I’m getting my starter locs in 3 weeks. When I went for my consultation the loctician told me that parting doesn’t matter & it’s more for aesthetic purposes. With that information I decided I wanted to do diamond parts. However, after watching your video, I decided the box pattern will be best for my type 3 hair. I also want neater uniformed locs. Thanks for this video
I need a tutorial on freestyle/random parting and doing it myself! I'm on my second set and I want to try to them them at home by myself! I keep combing out my starter locs because I'm not satisfied with the parts.
I did that I free styled mine I just new I wanted them small and a lot cause I have a taper fade on the sides and back so I decided to free style part mine I felt around in my head and mine are all not the same size though some are thinner some are thicker and idc what I have is dope. Plus it def beats coming out of $80 for starter locs
I'm doing wick locs and my loctician started me with the brick layed pattern been doing my locs since 02/21 So only a few months I get wick locs maintainance twice a year to allow for good growth
So, I just started my locs with comb coils and a free parting system. The difference is, I use a comb to part my hair and the type of parting is dependent on what I feel works for that particular section of hair, at the time. I’ve always loved to experiment and try different things, so I sort of created a system that works with my head and face shape. I am loving my coils, so far, and I’m interested in seeing what they do and how they mature.
Thank you for this information. I’m getting starter locs soon and I’m thinking about getting the grid pattern with small/medium locs. Will this give me a full look wile still looking uniformed? I work in corporate so I’m thinking this will be a happy medium. 😊
I love diamond parts. I really wanted them but my friend did it for me and didn't know how😔. They are not uniform which I don't mind. I am 1 yeqr in. I do not want to start over though.
This is so true my first set was square parts and they were uniform and beautiful. I loved the look of diamond parts so that's what I got this time. I wanted them a little smaller but they are so many different sizes. I asked the stylist and he said they are the same size I guess he meant the parts 🙄
What is your advice with this because my front is noticeably smaller than my back. I’m thinking of restarting. I’m 15 weeks in. My issue is not having perfect straight parts. I just them to all me the same size and I feel like I should’ve started them myself. But I see my progress and am scared to start over
What if you don’t want parts, do parts really matter? I’m not going for the maintained look. I just want retwist almost to the scalp, but not completely. Is that bad?
If you gone retwist your hair jus retwist to the scalp as a semi free former dats wat you would want to do because we don't retwist often but if you goin freeform you really don't have to do anything but wash and go
I’ve had locs 16 years ago. I’m working on growing mine back now. My hair is about two inches. I’m waiting until my hair is much longer. Waiting until after the summer time. I don’t want them to be really small in length. I kinda don’t want to go through it being so small again. I want to go with the diamond parts. I personally think it looks dope. Plus, I would like my locs to be uniformed as much as possible.
Hey, quick question. I’m a man just starting locks. I plan on wearing thick locks and in two strand twists style mostly. I would like for them to fall nicely. Clean and neat is what I’m going for. What parting style would you recommend. ** I like the look of triangle parts but don’t know if that would fit the styling I would wear dreads in** thanks!
Is it important to maintain my parts during the starter loc phase? I just did my third retwist today (month 3) and it made me cringe trying to pull hairs from locs to get my parts straight again. I wondered if it was important so that my locs stay around the same size… but could it also lead to thinning?
Ive been starting my loc journey 2 months ago. I realized I want them smaller & I want more locs. I think I'm going to start all over. I thought they were the way I wanted them. Quick questions how long should you wait in between washes & how long to wait to retwist.
Can someone explain to me how my locs would be if my edges are kinda of thin on the sides but I have a full head of starter locs rn, would I be ok in the future with them or will they make my hairline way worse?
My first set was sister locs as well. Started my second set last week. They are comb coils with random/freeform parts. I don't like them and am thinking of combing them out
Great & informative video. I have more of a grid pattern but I feel I would prefer the bricklay pattern in order to hide my scalp, I do have sparse density 4c hair. I feel that my scalp is uneven. Whenever I part, it never matches up on the opposite side of my head. It's almost as if one side is a bit lower. I have started over 2x. I'm still not uncertain & anxious. The back looks OK, smaller parting & I can see the vision. The front strands are finer and I'm scared of making the parts too small, then the locs look smaller in the front and a little more fuller in the back. I'm really struggling to get the parts on point. I do not want to start over my locs. I want to be happy with the results once they start to form.
What is your advice? I’m 15 weeks loc’d and the only reason I want to start over is because the woman who started them for me, the back parting is bigger than the front. My edges in particular is really driving me nuts because they’re noticeably smaller. I feel like I should’ve just started them myself. But I don’t know, I’m trying to stick it out.
I have had locs 3 or 4 times and my go to patern is grid although I had brick lay before but grid looks so much better on my head and I feel like parts are just as important as the locs but I'm just really particular
I free formed for 5 months and my baby Freeform locs were prettt much locced to the point washing and conditioning wouldn’t unravel them but then I let my wife retwisted them into two strand twist by just grabbing the baby Freeform’s where ever on the head and retwisting them into two strands it’s been 3 weeks and a few days since my first retwist and I’m about to get my second retwist today my locs seem to be doing fine however my 3rd retwist in a month I’m going to see a professional for a retwist
To me I think if you doing it yourself then do your best to part I believe it’s about the product you use in how full your natural hair is also to each they own I then seen so many different parted locs in some look a mess some look amazing because they take care of they hair if you do big parts or small your hair can still come out thin if you have thin hair tbh
I understand. My 19 year old grand daughter’s parting of her traditional locs is not uniform and it bothers me so much. However, she is ok with it. 🤷🏾♀️
I'm hoping to start my locs soon but I'm honestly stumped with all the information out there. My hair is short, dense and I have alopecia on one side so super thin and sparse on my right temple. In terms of appearance, I'm drawn to diamond and crescent and I think pencil or just a little thicker than that would be good for me. HOWEVER, I live in China so finding a loctitian is near impossible so I'll have to do it myself so I need something relatively simple that can still fit the criteria. Can ANYBODY advise?

I started my Locs last month and started my second set with a C shape for fullness. I want thick Locs and I’m seeing them being thick and full with the c shape
